Living According to God’s Will Forming a Conscience and Moral Code

t is important that we recognize the difference between right and wrong — both morally and ethically. Sometimes, though, this line can become blurred. Many situations we encounter in our lives include variables that can leave us conflicted and unsure of how to move forward in accordance with God’s will. How do we work through these moral conundrums? One way is to develop a solid Christian conscience. A moral conscience exists in the heart of every individual. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “When he listens to his conscience, the prudent man can hear God speaking. Conscience is a judgment of reason whereby the human person recognizes the moral quality of a concrete act that he is going to perform, is in the process of performing, or has already completed” (CCC 1777, 1778). While everyone is blessed with a conscience, each individual has a responsibility to develop this conscience. Parents obviously play an important role in developing their children’s consciences — parents have a responsibility to teach virtue to their children and help them to avoid fear, selfishness and pride. As we grow older, we take on the lifelong challenge of continually forming our own consciences, and establishing a moral code that enables us to make the proper judgments. One valuable tool in forming a conscience is the practice of introspection. “It is important for every person to be sufficiently present to himself in order to hear and follow the voice of his conscience” (CCC 1779). In contemporary society, where there are so many distractions and routines, it is extremely important that we take the time to look inward and truly listen to what our inner voice is telling us.

s importante que reconozcamos la diferencia entre el bien y el mal – moral y éticamente. Sin embargo, frecuentemente la diferencia puede nublarse. Encontramos muchas situaciones en la vida con variables que causan conflictos y nos dejan inseguros de como cumplir la voluntad divina. ¿Cómo enfrentar estas disyuntivas morales? Una manera es desarrollar una consciencia cristiana sólida. Una conciencia moral vive en el corazón de cada individuo. Como dice el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, “El hombre prudente, cuando escucha la conciencia moral, puede oír a Dios que le habla. La conciencia moral es un juicio de la razón por el que la persona humana reconoce la cualidad moral de un acto concreto que piensa hacer, está haciendo o ha hecho.” (CCC 1777, 1778). Aunque todos son bendecidos con una consciencia, cada individuo es responsable de desarrollar esa consciencia. Por supuesto los padres juegan un papel importante en desarrollar la consciencia de sus hijos – los padres son responsables de enseñar virtud a sus hijos y ayudarles a evitar el miedo, egoísmo y orgullo. Según maduramos, asumimos el reto vital de formar nuestras consciencias y establecer un código moral, que nos permita formar juicios morales correctos. Una valiosa herramienta para formar la consciencia es practicar la introspección. “Es preciso que cada uno preste mucha atención a sí mismo para oír y seguir la voz de su conciencia.” (CCC 1779). En la sociedad contemporánea, con sus muchas distracciones y rutinas, es sumamente importante que nos demos el tiempo de examinarnos internamente y escuchar lo que nuestra voz interior nos dice.
