4 Risotto in the Bergoglio House

It was a sultry morning in January 1929. The family of Giovanni Bergoglio arrived in Buenos Aires after a long voyage. Despite the heat and humidity, the grandmother of the father, Rosa Margherita Vasallo, an elegant lady, wore a coat with a fur collar, completely out of place in that temperature. In the lining of the coat was the money from the property that the family had sold. The Bergoglios had left Portacomaro ĺ…ąPortacomĂŠ, in Piedmonteseĺ…˛, a small town in the province of Asti in Piedmont. They had come there from Castelnuovo, also in Asti, at the beginning of the 1800s. The negotiations to complete the transaction held up the family longer than expected, so the Bergoglios did not board the Principessa Mafalda, which shipwrecked north of Brazil, costing some hundred people their lives.
