ADVENT

YEAR A

1 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

FIRST READING

Isaiah 2:1-5

The Lord gathers all nations together into the eternal peace of the Kingdom of God.

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah.

1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

2 It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it,

3 and many peoples shall come, and say: ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.’ For out of Sion shall go forth the law, and the word of the lord from Jerusalem.

4 He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the lord. The word of the Lord.

82

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

Psalm 122(121):1-2. 4-5. 6-7. 8-9. R. cf. 1

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

1 I rejoiced when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the lord.’

2 And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. R.

4 It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the lord as it is decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the lord.

5 There were set the thrones for judgement, the thrones of the house of David. R.

6 For the peace of Jerusalem pray, ‘May they prosper, those who love you.’

7 May peace abide in your walls, and security be in your towers. R.

8 For the sake of my family and friends, let me say, ‘Peace upon you.’

9 For the sake of the house of the lord, our God, I will seek good things for you. R.

SECOND READING

Romans 13:11-14a

‘Salvation is nearer to us now.’

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.

Brothers and sisters:

11 You know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.

12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light.

1 Fi R st s und AY o F Adv E nt 83

13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarrelling and jealousy.

14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ. The word of the Lord.

ACCLAMATION BEFORE THE GOSPEL

Alleluia, alleluia.

Show us, O lord, your mercy, and grant us your salvation. Alleluia.

GOSPEL

Psalm 85(84):8

Matthew 24:37-44

Stay awake so that you may be ready.

 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

At that time:

Jesus said to his disciples:

37 ‘For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark,

39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left.

41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left.

42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

84 Y EAR A

43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.

44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.’ The Gospel of the Lord.

4 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

FIRST READING

Isaiah 11:1-10

‘With righteousness he shall judge the poor.’

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah.

On that day:

1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

2 And the Spirit of the lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the lord.

3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,

4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.
