FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT 175

MONDAY

FIRST READING

Isaiah 2:1-5

The Lord gathers all nations together into the eternal peace of the Kingdom of God.

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah.

1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

2 It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it,

3 and many peoples shall come, and say: ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.’ For out of Sion shall go forth the law, and the word of the lord from Jerusalem.

4 He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the lord. The word of the Lord.

In Year A, when this reading is used on the First Sunday of Advent, the following reading may replace it.

36

OR:

Isaiah 4:2-6

‘There will be exultation for those who are saved.’

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah.

2 In that day the branch of the lord shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and honour of the survivors of Israel.

3 And he who is left in Sion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy, everyone who has been recorded for life in Jerusalem,

4 when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Sion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgement and by a spirit of burning.

5 Then the lord will create over the whole site of Mount Sion and over her assemblies a cloud by day, and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory there will be a canopy.

6 There will be a booth for shade by day from the heat, and for a refuge and a shelter from the storm and rain. The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

Psalm 122(121):1-2. 3-4a. 8-9. R. cf. 1

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

1 I rejoiced when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the lord.’

2 And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. R.

3 Jerusalem is built as a city bonded as one together.

4 It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the lord. R.

175 Monday 37

8 For the sake of my family and friends, let me say, ‘Peace upon you.’

9 For the sake of the house of the lord, our God, I will seek good things for you.

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

ACCLAMATION BEFORE THE GOSPEL

Alleluia, alleluia.

Come and set us free, O Lord our God; let your face shine forth, and we shall be saved. Alleluia.

GOSPEL Matthew 8:5-11

‘Many will come from east and west to the kingdom of heaven.’

 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

At that time:

5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him,

6 ‘Lord, my servant is lying paralysed at home, suffering terribly.’

7 And he said to him, ‘I will come and heal him.’

8 But the centurion replied, ‘Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.

9 For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, “Go”, and he goes, and to another, “Come”, and he comes, and to my servant, “Do this”, and he does it.’

10 When Jesus heard this, he marvelled and said to those who followed him, ‘Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.

38 Fi R st Week o F a dvent

11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.’

The Gospel of the Lord.

FIRST READING

TUESDAY

Isaiah 11:1-10

‘The Spirit of the L ord shall rest upon him.’

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah.

On that day:

1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

2 And the Spirit of the lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the lord.

3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,

4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.

6 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.

7 The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

510 a The Most Holy Name of Jesus

FIRST READING Philippians 2:1-11

‘He bestowed on him the name that is above every name.’

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians.

Brothers and sisters:

1 If there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy;

2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,

6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The word of the Lord.

824 PROPER OF SAINTS

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

Psalm 8:4-5. 6-7. 8-9. R. 2ab

R. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name through all the earth!

4 When I see the heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you arranged,

5 what is man that you should keep him in mind, the son of man that you care for him? R.

6 Yet you have made him little lower than the angels; with glory and honour you crowned him,

7 gave him power over the works of your hands: you put all things under his feet. R.

8 All of them, sheep and oxen, yes, even the cattle of the fields,

9 birds of the air, and fish of the sea that make their way through the waters. R.

ACCLAMATION BEFORE THE GOSPEL

Alleluia, alleluia.

You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. Alleluia.
