FROM THE BOARD Good afternoon and welcome to all our readers, supporters and the management, players and officials of Kelvedon Hatch FC. Kelvedon Hatch is a team we have had some excellent games with over the years, and their Chairman David Hughes is one of the nicest people I have had the fortune of meeting at my time at Catholic United.

Hatch have started the season well and in returning manager Darren Hunt, they have one of the most successful managers there has ever been at this level. We are yet to find our rhythm this season but I have enormous faith in the management team and squad we have here. This league is so strong and off days are punished, as they have been in the last two weeks. Off the pitch our following continues to grow and at our last home game, we had four Celtic supporters which was just amazing and quite surreal. I am informed there may be more visitors today, so I look forward to meeting you all. As always I hope everyone enjoys the game, and please get behind the team. COME ON YOU BHOYS IN GREEN!!

James Paviour Chairman

FROM THE BOSS “It is now about getting a result and building from that” Last Saturday, was another tough match for us. With Rayleigh putting together a young and energetic side this season, it was always going to be tough, with players unavailable and coming back from injury. Would we have done better if we had players available, most certainly. It was always going to be a tough ask when we started the game with 7 defenders on the pitch but we can’t make excuses and just have to learn from our defeats. However, we did give them a very good game and without that midfield to work from, we struggled to create chances so it was a frustrating afternoon. Don’t get me wrong, there were times when we did get the ball on the floor and we looked good, and we certainly huffed and puffed right up to the final whistle. There were periods in the game where I think we saw what we were capable of but we needed to be further up the pitch in order to have punished Town. Some of Alfie’s deliveries from the left and from set pieces were superb and we needed to get on the end of them to get our rewards. Rayleigh did what they needed to and I think they are a good side, definitely going to be causing some teams problems this season.

We turn our attentions to this weekend, at home to Kelvedon Hatch. Previous results are nothing at this level especially where teams recruit players quite frequently so squad improvements are being made all of the time. They’ve had some good results so far and will be looking to go for the jugular on Saturday. We’ve players coming back and we’ll be in a much better situation that we were against Rayleigh, but it is now about getting a result and building from that. We know we can play, we know we have the personnel who can play, and the players know what they are capable of.

We also added another to the injury list, with Sonuga picking up a thigh injury. It is such a shame for him as he has not long returned from an injury he picked up during the pre-season. He’s a great talker and a very positive player on the pitch, organising and giving players a lot of enthusiastic encouragement. Emily is a very busy person at the moment for sure!!

We welcomed back Tom Hollingsworth to the team last week. Tom hasn’t played football for over a season and a half but he is naturally very fit and for someone out for that amount of time, he was extremely lively and worked his socks off. Its his game and I don’t think it will be long before he is back up to full speed and adding to his career tally for the Hoops again.

FROM THE CAPTAIN “If we create chances, we’ll need to take them and make sure we get our season back on track” It’s been two difficult weeks for us and we have ultimately come up short. Basildon are always tough opposition and we didn’t really get into that game. Against Rayleigh, we had players unavailable and as much as we competed, we didn’t create. It was great to see Tom Hollingsworth pull the boots on last week. It’s going to take a few games for Tom to get match fit but I’m sure he will get on the scoresheet very soon, hopefully today. Not playing for a while, to come back and play 90 minutes is really tough, but that just goes to show naturally fit he is and has obviously kept himself in decent shape. He worked so hard against Rayleigh and when that goal comes, I’m certain it will open the floodgates.

We’re up against Kelvedon Hatch who picked up a good win last weekend and will be full of confidence going into todays game. We’ll need to ensure we nullify them in the opening exchanges and impose our game. If we create chances we’ll need to take them and make sure we get our season back on track.

CATHOLIC UNITED HISTORY The club played its early football at Nazareth House, which was then an orphanage. This was possibly the time when the teams were best supported as all the children would watch. Like Wellstead Gardens in its prime before the club were evicted in 2018, Nazareth House was regarded as one of the best pitches in the area & was unfortunately lost to the building of St Helen’s primary school in the early 1970’s. Despite continuously moving between grounds, the club were ready to take the quality of football on offer to the next level. In 2009, the club was accepted to play in the prestigious Essex Olympian League (Step Five), & having worked up through the leagues, Catholic United were crowned Premier Division champions in 2018 at the first attempt. Fortune would favour the brave in this interesting early season match with Basildon Town. Town, certainly one of the teams who have their eyes set on promotion are a force to be reckoned with now experienced striker Marcus Bowers in the dugout. The game started at a frantic pace, with both sides seemingly happy to get on the ball and trying to push it around the park. As things began to settle, it was clear Town were looking to take advantage of height and it wasn’t long before balls from the back were seeing their way over the middle of the park. The opening goal came midway through the first half, against the run of play and it knocked the wind out of the hosts sails. With the half ending, it was clear Catholic Utd would need to be more clinical. With the experienced Jay Nash and Pat Kearney coming on for youngsters Daniel Dunn and Cameron Lemar, manager Simon Thomas was hoping for a change of fortunes. Sadly within 10 minutes Town had extended their lead but Tom Kearney reduced the deficit eight minutes later to give Utd a lifeline. Defender Lewis Payne was awarded the yellow card, a tackle born out of frustration, and two minutes from time Town secured the points with their third goal of the afternoon. Manager Simon Thomas stated afterwards “Town were more clinical and we simply didn’t take our chances”

History In 1920 Kelvedon Hatch Football Club was formed to enable the local boys, of what was then a very small Essex village, to play organised football. The Club continued up to the wars years when, like so many other clubs it was temporarily disbanded until it was re-formed in 1946. Kelvedon Hatch Football Club played for many years in local football leagues until the mid 1970’s when in an endeavour to improve the standard of football it applied to join the Greene King South Essex League. The Club was admitted to the League where it continued to play for many years.

This proved a successful strategy in that in the late 1980’s and the 1990’s the Club achieved outstanding success on the field of play winning, on more than a number of occasions, the Essex County Cup, the Essex Olympian League, the Essex Olympian League Cup and the Ongar Charity Cup. During this time some of the Management and many players achieved honours in being selected for the Essex County Representative Team and the Essex Olympian Football League Representative Team.

PAGE 23

In order to progress, the Club applied for membership to the Essex Olympian League which at that time required any club participating in the league to also have a reserve team. A reserve team was formed and the Club was admitted to the Essex Olympian League as a member in 1985.

The first few years in the league were spent in adjusting to the higher grade of football with the club setting about the task of recruiting better players to assist with the progression of the Club.

H O L L I N G S W O R T H

A fans favourite Tom Hollingsworth returns to football You’ve been out of the game for some time. Whats the reason? I’ve actually been out of football completely for around 2 years. I decided to set up my own personal training studio so I had to dedicate my time to the business. Covid hit just as I was opening so it made things very stressful, but I’m glad to be through it now. Returning to football, has it been on your mind to return or has someone been twisting your arm? To be honest, its been on my mind ever since I decided to stop playing. I knew I would eventually come back to it. Catholic always stayed in touch and tried to get me back and its nice to feel wanted at a club. They always respected my decisions with work. Talking about Catholic Utd, what were your initial thoughts? Did you have any reservations? As soon as I made the decision to come back, I’ve been buzzing. There was no hesitation because I loved my first spell at the club. They have a great squad and group of players and they are very hungry to succeed. First game back against Rayleigh Town last weekend. What were your thoughts going into the game? I mainly didn’t want to put too much pressure on myself after such a long period out. I just wanted to put in a solid performance and start regaining my match fitness. The result didn’t go our way but there were plenty of positives. I’m sure with the squad we have, we can do good things this season.

How did you feel after the game? I must admit I actually felt really good after the game. I had a few cuts and bruises and I never knew how much I hated blisters, but I’m really excited to go again this weekend. The squad that Simon has assembled, what do you think is achievable this season? The squad is looking great. Yes we’re struggling with some injuries and player availability of late, but that is football at this level. When everyone returns, I genuinely believe we have the playing ability to be competing for the title. My main objective is to get the club back to the top and to get back to doing what I love doing best, and that is getting on the scoresheet.

The Hoops were looking to bounce back from a 3-1 home defeat to Basildon, but with players unavailable and a number still out injured, manager Simon Thomas knew beforehand the game was going to be tough. Being forced to play the game with 7 defenders on the pitch, it was left to Pat Kearney and Louis Robinson to join captain Mike Sammut in the middle of the park. Returnee Tom Hollingsworth was thrown into the fray for his first game for a season and a half. The early exchanges belonged to the hosts but Utd kept a high line and a number of offsides put paid to a lot of early forays. The Hoops were trying to play the ball around, using the wide pitch but Town were set up well and organised in defence. Utd continued to push, having the best luck down the left with the ever livewire Alfie Whiteaker managing to get some good balls into the box but Town were equal to task of clearing their lines. A painful injury to defender Sonuga Gbenga was the last thing Thomas wanted as his depleted side saw out the first half. It would be Thomas with a slightly bigger smile than his opposite in the Rayleigh dugout with the scoreline and nil-nil. The second half started brightly for the hosts, beating the offside trap to fire into the side netting. Then just under 10 minutes after the break, a small defensive error allowed Town to take the lead, a well taken left footed shot guided past Godwin-Green. Utd pressed onwards, with Hollingsworth chasing down well and Pessenda getting on the ball trying to make things happen. Sadly with the lack of midfield guile, chances were spurious for the visitors and the game was effectively killed off when Whiteaker was adjudged to have fouled the Town forward, in what was a weak penalty award. Needless to say the penalty was taken well, with Godwin-Green guessing the right way but the accuracy was just too good.

PAGE 28

After the game, Thomas admitted it was always going to be a tough ask, but it was up to the players to learn from the game and ensure that there was a good reaction against Kelvedon Hatch on Saturday.

CARTERVICKERS & THE TWEET THAT STARTED IT ALL

We’re rightly proud of our history and heritage at Catholic United FC. From humble origins to the club we are today, a new date will be entered into our history books, a date that changed the face of the club completely. The 1st September 2021, a simple day, nothing major in terms of news for the club. Then, a last minute loan transfer of defender Cameron Carter-Vickers from Spurs to Celtic. With news of the player actually being part of the Catholic Youth setup accompanied by an image of him in his green and white hooped kit as a boy, the stage was set for Twitter land to go crazy.

As our own supporters are aware, we play in the green and white hoops due to Celtic FC giving us a kit shortly after their 1967 European Cup win after our Chairman wrote a letter asking if we could be given one so that we could be distinguishable from everyone else. As the numbers increased on Twitter, so did the huge number of direct messages we were receiving, all of which we extremely positive, proving the Celtic supporters to be the best in the world! Not only this, but they are also the most fanatical, the most kind and most generous. With Catholic United continually struggling for player sponsorships each season, through sheer wonton support of our new followers, we now have players home and away kits sponsored. Our website on Pitchero topped their football websites for the very first time, leaping from 235th in just 1-week, after 40k hits were received on our site in three consecutive days. Chairman James Paviour was invited to the Celtic Supporters Podcast, filmed for YouTube, and a group of avid Celtic supporters, so enamoured by the link between the clubs, set up the very first ‘Catholic United Scottish Supporters Club” and are planning to organise a coach trip for their followers, which has reached 1400 within a week.

The tweet sparks huge interest and we understand that for a 20-minute period, Catholic United were trending on Twitter. To this date, the tweet has been seen over 307,000 times and over 38,000 people have interacted with it in some way. From just 2650 followers, our following ballooned to 19k and over within 2 weeks, it increased further to 19.7k this week, as we strive to hit 20k.

The first match since all this happend, our 3-1 home defeat to Basildon Town, we welcomed four Celtic supporters, including a lovely couple from Glasgow who were on holiday in Southend and decided to come and watch the game. It truly has been one of the greatest little stories in non-league. As we are, and continue to be welcomed with open arms by Celtic supporters, we’ll continue to build our relationship and club, both on and off the pitch.

Reserves 2021/22 Having picked up another 6 points in the first half of September, we are exactly where we wanted to be from our first four games, winning all four. With two more local games to come this month, we must maintain our levels if we are to keep the 100% going. The away game at Wakering Sports this week will be toughest test to date and possibly in the season. Wakering Sports have also had a great start, scoring lots of goals. We must use our experience from the games against them last year to make sure we can nullify their opportunities and be clinical ourselves going forward. Despite scoring 15 goals in the last two games, we have been disappointed with the goals we have conceded. If we can eradicate these mistakes leading to the goals, games will be much more comfortable than they have at times. It has been disappointing to see some injuries. We have been without captain Dan Boosey in goal but Owen Wells has deputised brilliantly. We will be without Ellis Porter for a long time with a knee injury. This is a blow and we wish him well in his recovery. On a more positive note, it’s great to see Ronnie Bridges back in the green and white hoops again. His experience and energy will help develop the young and improving squad we have. We hope for a big few results in the coming weeks to keep setting this season up for success.
