Reserves Update

FROM THE BOARD Good afternoon all and a warm welcome to all our readers, supporters and the players, management and officials of Leigh Ramblers.

Whilst October didn’t end well for us, November is a new month and clearly we want to start it as we mean to go on.

Last week, the result didn’t go our way against Rayleigh Town but I’m sure Simon and Tom will rally the troops.

Things still progress behind the scenes, with more Celtic supporters finding their way to our little club and we still find it a surreal experience but hugely appreciate their support.

Its the first time we play our local rivals and hopefully we’ll be in for a good game. I’m sure we would all like to see an open game, but like a lot of matches between rivals, they are normally a very close affair.

As always I hope everyone enjoys the game, and please get behind the team.

James Paviour Chairman

FROM THE BOSS “We have a great squad and plenty of options which have played a huge part in the recent run of results” We’ve reached November and up until last week, October had been a great month for us. We had some great results but moreso, the performances were really pleasing. We let ourselves down last Saturday. I said in my programme notes that we needed to maintain our performance and effort levels, but we were disappointing and were outplayed and outfought by a better team. A lot of credit to Rayleigh Town for their competiveness. We were always on the back foot and didn’t impose our style of play, or pass the ball like we had done in previous weeks. They out worked us and pressed us in good numbers. Over the 90 minutes we hardly tested their keeper and gave them their first goal from our own free kick on the half way line. We always appeared to be chasing the game from that point. I am positive that we against Ramblers, as lose and we were on results. when I spoke the game, I could see

will see a reaction it hurts when you a good little run of to the players after it hurt them aswell.

Player Availability is key for us each week, and you could tell the players that missed the game were sorely missed. However, we used our last defeat as a springboard to improve, so we will look to do the same again.

Those at the game last week saw Lewis Payne go off in the first half. He didn’t feel right within himself so I’m hoping a week of rest will see him return as he is a key part of the team. We also saw Harley Kee again in the squad. He has had a slow start to the season, having been injured at the start of preseason and actually missed around 7-weeks. We saw him return for three games but then he contracted covid so missed another fortnight. He came back to face Kelvedon Hatch and looked like he hadn’t been away. I took a decision to start with him on the bench against Rayleigh as the guys had been performing well in previous weeks so was a decision around continuity. I readily admitted I got it wrong and apologised to him personally after the game. He is massive for us and I’m sure that we will see that as we move forward. Ramblers will be a tough game. It is a local derby and there will be a lot of passion, passion due to the bragging rights. League position and form mean nothing in these types of games, it is a case of who turns up and wants it more.

GRASSROOTS GAME WORTH £10BN & SAVES NHS £43M

“Life has changed massively,” says Josh Deegan, who has lost eight stone thanks to playing grassroots football in the last two years. “I’m more confident now, I’m happier, I’m healthier and my outlook on everything is a lot more positive. The dark cloud has been lifted.”

Economic Impact of Grassroots Football • Total va lue

of £10.769bn per year Direct econo mic value of £2.050bn per year • S o ci For Matt Legg, football has been a similar saviour as al wellbeing value of £8.7 he used his love for the beautiful game in his fight year 12bn per against depression. • Average annual spen d of £326 per player equal “I used football to get my confidence back,” revealed s £ 4 2 6 m in tax Legg, who also set up FC Not Alone to help others in • £43.5m saving in the NHS w a similar position. ith reduced GP visits •

“There are scientific benefits of playing football and exercising, the endorphins help you feel better.” Both Josh and Matt believe football has helped their health and mental wellbeing, and are among the 12 million people playing grassroots football in England. With over eight million of them being adults, we’ve sought to understand the social and economic value of the adult grassroots game, in which no-one is paid to play and no-one pays to watch. In what is the largest study of this type to date for a National Governing Body in the UK, we canvassed approximately 9000 participants to provide a nationally-representative sample that allows for robust statistical analysis. And our report has shown just how valuable grassroots football is for both the health of individuals and the nation, saving the NHS over £43 million per year through reduced GP visits as well as contributing a total of £10.769 billion to the UK economy. With approximately £1 million spent by the FA every week in supporting the grassroots game, it represents a considerable return of almost £11 billion from an annual investment of £52 million. The average £326 annual spend of a regular grassroots footballer, on things such as boots and kit, pitch hire and socialising, also means a tax

“Grassroots football is ingrained and embedded in many local communities and, as this important report shows, it makes substantial contributions to the economy and to the quality of life of those who play the game,” says Michael Kitson, an economist at Judge Business School at Cambridge University. “Grassroots football in England is evolving and developing: there are rising rates of female participation, new formats of the game and new opportunities to participate. “This report shows the significant impact that playing football, in all its forms, has on the economy and on the quality of life of those playing the game. “It has frequently been argued that playing football improves health, social engagement and selfefficacy. “This report not only provides rigorous support for many of these benefits, it also provides quantitative estimates of the impacts which show the substantial social return from playing football. “Although measuring direct economic impacts is important, this does not fully capture how activities, such as playing football, may influence the quality of life. “Those who play football report significantly higher levels of general health, happiness, confidence and trust compared to those who do not play sport. “Participating in football is associated with improved physical and psychological health. Regular footballers are healthier than those who do not play the game, and this means that they visit the doctor less often.”

CATHOLIC UNITED HISTORY The club played its early football at Nazareth House, which was then an orphanage. This was possibly the time when the teams were best supported as all the children would watch. Like Wellstead Gardens in its prime before the club were evicted in 2018, Nazareth House was regarded as one of the best pitches in the area & was unfortunately lost to the building of St Helen’s primary school in the early 1970’s. Despite continuously moving between grounds, the club were ready to take the quality of football on offer to the next level. In 2009, the club was accepted to play in the prestigious Essex Olympian League (Step Five), & having worked up through the leagues, Catholic United were crowned Premier Division champions in 2018 at the first attempt. In recent years, prolonged cup runs have become a feature in the season calendar, with consecutive victories coming

LEIGH RAMBLERS History Leigh Ramblers football club was founded in 1902 and celebrated in fine style their centenary in 2002 with over 400 guests attending a presentation at the Cliffs Pavilion, in Southend. well that was true until updated news was found telling us that the club was founded in 1897 making us even older. The youth section was started in 1976 and had a few successful years, but it was not until 1999/2000 season that a new committee was formed and mini soccer was introduced to the club, we started with 4 teams and now have a 18 mini soccer teams, 23 11 a side teams, 7 girls teams, with between 30 to 40 players training at u/6 level, Our aim is to find a level for all players who come to our club. In November 2008 we achieved the FA community club award after long and hard work by committee members and in May 2011 we were awarded Charter Community club of the year, and again in 2015. Training takes place at different venues, including Belfair’s Rec, Chalkwell Park, and the 3G pitch at The Len Forge Centre is where the 3 lions undertake our training for new teams. We believe that all players can play, have fun in a safe environment whilst building confidence in a group situation. We try to promote fair play and have equal opportunities for all. Season 20/21 we were accepted into the EJA the chance for a higher standard of football
