Cowichan Valley
Introducing Laurie Belanger Cowichan Valley’s Newest What’s On Digest Publisher. Laurie Belanger leaped at the opportunity to become the local face for the What’s On Digest. Laurie, a long time resident of the Valley, connected with the Cowichan What’s On almost as soon as it was released. Having a farm just out of town, it keeps her in the loop. The What’s On Digest is Vancouver Islands largest event and activity publication. It was started in Campbell River over 10 years ago by Cathy Kaardal and is now in over forty communities. What’s On Digest brings comprehensive and current daily events to individual communities, for all ages to share. The magazine is interactive in each community and invites everyone to add to the content with their activities and events through the website. Cowichan Valley’s issue was started by Simon Rideout, the What’s On Digest publisher from Nanaimo, in March 2015. Simon saw the need for the people of the Cowichan valley to have their own magazine and website, that would become a platform for visitors and locals to amplify what a great community the Valley is, and to show just how much it has to offer.
WO10 Intro Lori .indd 1
Laurie’s background is in the hospitality industry. She owned and operated a Hotel on Vancouver Island, but wanted something completely different, so she jumped into farming, with a large property and a lot of animals. Farm life is important to Laurie, she loves the farming community, “learning and teaching sustainable farming is so vital for our future”, Laurie says. Not being afraid of hard work and new experiences - it’s no surprise that becoming a publisher was an easy and a instant decision for Laurie. “I am very excited about joining the What’s On Digest team and producing Cowichan Valley’s edition, as we have so much to do and so many exciting things happening in this Valley. I want to help in keeping the Cowichan Valley one of the best destinations on the island. I love people and I look forward to meeting local businesses and community groups”, says Laurie.”

CENTRAL VAC
In 1973 a Scottish nuclear engineer and his spouse arrived in Victoria to start a family and looking for a new experience. It is too long a story to explain how they got involved in the vacuum industry, but, involved they did. By 1974, two more branches were added in the greater Victoria area. In 1975, the Duncan location was born. More was to follow up island. 10 in total.
GERMANY’S BEST
The motivation was to offer the public a better choice than what was available at that time. In the early eighties, the best of British and German vacuums were introduced to the line. These high quality and performance vacuums are still available at Mister Sweeper. The service department was expanded to not only repair product that they sold, but to offer service for all vacuums. In the early nineties, a chance meeting with the owner of Cana-vac, (a pioneer in the central vacuum industry) resulted in Mister Sweeper obtaining the full product range of vacuums and accessories of this very fine product line. he can safely say that customer satisfaction with Cana-vac is the highest that they have ever experienced.

Local Farmer Grows Love for Therapeutic Riding Joanne Gorle has loved animals all her life. This passion has inspired her life path in many ways. In addition to her local farming business (ethical pork, beef, chicken, and honey production), Joanne has recently joined the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association (CTRA) Instructor staff team. Joanne’s journey towards therapeutic riding began 3 years ago when she decided to look for an opportunity to volunteer in the horse community and discovered CTRA. It was during one of her first sessions in the ring that Joanne discovered her calling. She was struck by the incredible smile offered to her by a participant who did not communicate verbally. “As soon as I saw that wonderful smile I was hooked,” says Gorle, “CTRA was a perfect choice for me.” In spring 2016, Joanne was certified as an Assistant Instructor under the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (the national governing body for therapeutic riding). Therapeutic riding (TR) instructors are rare, and the highly specialized training required to become certified is hard to come by. Lucky for aspiring TR coaches in the Cowichan Valley like Joanne, CTRA happens to be the only CanTRA member centre accredited as an “Examination and Training Centre” in all of BC. Interested? CTRA is always welcoming new volunteers. No experience is necessary, and all the training is provided. Whether you’re an experienced horse person looking to give back to the community or a complete novice - we have a place for you. Contact CTRA at info@ctra.ca or 250-746-1028 to start your journey today!

Weird and Wonderful Car Traditions The arrival of the new year and departure of the old is an occasion that often invites reflection. Here is a fun look at the origin of some quirky traditions that surround the use of the car. Tying tin cans to cars of newlyweds
Plush Dice
It is believed that this tradition had its start in the old French tradition of ‘Charivari’: friends would stand outside the home of newlyweds and beat upon pots and pans until they were invited in for refreshments. As tolerance for late-night cookware-wielding revellers diminished, tin and aluminum cans were tied to the back fenders of cars instead.
This tradition dates back to the hot rod culture of the 1950s. American pilots in WWII placed dice (with 7s facing ‘up’) in the cockpit of their planes to ensure good luck on their missions. After the war, the pilots tied the dice to the rear view mirrors of hot rods instead and the practice caught on. The reason the dice are plush? The plastic ones would melt.
Cruising
Lifting your feet when driving over railroad tracks
The tradition of ‘cruising’ (driving slowly up and down a main drag in a fancy car in the hopes of seeing or being seen) is believed to have had its origin in the Mexican American communities of Southern California. There, ‘el paseo’ was a tradition that saw villagers stroll through the centre of town in their finest apparel. Whittier Boulevard in East Los Angeles, Woodward Avenue in Detroit and McHenry Avenue in Modesto have all been famous cruising destinations.
Superstitions have long surrounded the idea of boundaries between this realm and the next. Crossroads in particular were believed to be places where ghosts or demons might be found. It was thought too that spirits travel most easily along straight lines. It is perhaps a blending of these beliefs that led to the tradition of people, when driving over tracks, lifting their feet for good luck.

REVISITS BEAUTIFUL MIDNIGHT; ANNOUNCES 28 DATE CANANDIAN TOUR November 14, 2016 - Warner Music recording artist Matthew Good has gone into the famous Bathouse Recording Studio to record new versions of select songs from his most iconic album, Beautiful Midnight. Good will celebrate the release of this EP, titled I Miss New Wave: Beautiful Midnight Revisited with a 28 date Canadian tour, in which he will perform Beautiful Midnight in its entirety. Fans who purchase tickets to this tour will also receive a digital copy of the new EP, which will be released on December 2. VIP packages will also be available in select markets that will give fans the opportunity to attend a sound check performance, have front of the line entry to the venue, a photo with Matthew and more. Tickets for the cross-country tour go on-sale Friday, November 18th, and can be purchased at http://www.MatthewGood.org/shows/. See below for a full list of tour dates.
Of the new EP, Matthew Good says “I’ve waited almost 20 years to reimagine these songs in the studio; I think I may have actually bettered what some consider my best work.” Produced by longtime Good collaborator Warne Livesey, the new EP features brand new renditions of 5 classic songs from the triple platinum certified album, including “Surburbia,” “I Miss New Wave” and “Load Me Up,” which is still one of Good’s most played songs on Canadian radio. See below for the full track listing. Fans can get their first taste of the tracks by clicking here to listen to a clip of the reimagined version of “I Miss New Wave,” with a clip of “Suburbia” coming Wednesday, November 23rd. Beautiful Midnight was Matthew Good’s most commercially successful album, going on to sell over 300,000 units in Canada alone. In addition to this, the album was awarded the Juno Award for Rock Album of the Year, and the Matthew Good Band received the Juno award for Group of the Year. What’s more, “Load Me Up” was recently selected by VICE as the #1 song on their “Completely Biased Ranking of the 60 Best CanRock Songs Ever” list. It’s never too late to start leading a healthier lifestyle! Studies have shown that maintaining social and intellectual pursuits is as important to good health as maintaining physical fitness. With the new year upon us, there are plenty of opportunities for older adults to pursue all three areas of well being in the Cowichan Valley. On days when the sun is shining (or at least it isn’t pouring) be sure to get out and enjoy the Seniors Community Park at the Cowichan Sportsplex. The free outdoor exercise equipment is designed to help older adults stay mobile, healthy and physically active in their communities. Intellectual, physical and social rewards can be had by signing up for ElderCollege! Most of these programs are run out of the Island Savings Centre and, with January here, there are a slew of new offerings about to start. From fitness and recreation to computers, history, music, armchair travel, arts and the outdoors, Eldercollege really does have something for just about everyone and every interest. For a list of courses starting in soon see islandnet.com/eldercollege or call Jennifer Carmichael at 250.746.3414 The Island Savings Centre also offers fitness opportunities geared to older adults such as ‘Fit Forever’ and ‘Pio-
neer Skate’. ‘Nordic Pole Walking’, ‘Social Ballroom Dance’ and many more are also available. Be sure to check out the Spring 2017 Recreation Guide. For those living north of Duncan, the Chemainus Seniors Drop-in Centre is the perfect place to stay active and make friends. Located at 9824 Willow Street, the Centre offers ongoing daily activities including snooker and pool, crafts, table tennis, yoga, dancing, computer drop-in, creative writing, dancing, darts and much more. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate served daily. For more information call 250.246.2111 or simply swing by the Centre and say hello. Finally, don’t forget about your local walking trails and libraries. Peaceful walks and quiet reads are available to all: both can help you get through the dark of winter in good health and good spirits. Happy New Year!

Ask The Mechanic Finding a good mechanic is not an easy thing to do, especially if you don’t have extended knowledge on cars. But even if you do consider yourself to be somewhat of a car expert, it’s still difficult to determine whether you have chosen the right mechanic. There are a lot of mechanics out there, and many of them won’t hesitate to rip you off or install a low-quality part. That is why you have to take some things into consideration before you decide what car shop to go into, such as the way it looks on the outside, its reputation, and of course, the price.
