STREET STYLE Smells Like Check Spirit presents the 90s grunge influences of the classic check pattern. Taking inspiration from the late Kurt Cobain and his check shirts which he wore frequently on stage as the frontman of the band Nirvana. As outerwear is a key winter item this year, here we explore how Kurt’s checks and oversized styles have somewhat influenced the key looks and the patterns which are on trend this season.

Material Girl Exaggerated glamour, boldness and exuburance. Material Girl explores the 1980s, and the essence of power-dressing. What it means to be a woman in 2018 is an ongoing positive conversation, meaning more to us now than at any other time. The use of sharp silhouettes translate into the block colours this season, presenting a vibrant statement or the alternative which includes silver and gold metallics for all night parties and fun. Alongside this, animal print and sequins have come back with a bang. Girls just want to have fun...

DESIGN DETAILS Checks for AW18 will mainly have a focus on outerwear and not so much on shirts or dresses this season. Structured shoulders reflect on the 80s coming back into fashion, yet presenting the hertitage of tartan as stylish, wearable and comfortable for day to day work attire. Details to look out for are large buttons on cape style garments, large open v necks on oversized coats, fur fringing around collars, belts to show of the waist and fringing embellishments on the arms and chest area. However, it is all about practicality and comfort. Accessories with also be shown on the catwalks, they will be structured bags, durable and practical just like the coats and blazers.

The 80s are back! and the main overall colour scheme for Material Girl is vivid neon colours which reflect on the later years of the 80s alongside the power dressing trend. The neon colours and metallics present a fun and experimental decade, yet wearable for winter by the use of navy blue and violet tones. The option here is to dress the trend up or down for workwear or a party.

PRINT AND PATTERN

Alongside neon block colours, the main stand out pattern for this season is animal print. A loud, bold and quirky pattern styled with high waisted trousers, as a one piece or a structured shirt or oversized blazer. The key pattern style this season is half and half, as shown here in images, one side animal print and the other is a sequin or another fabric or embellishment with a high shine.

DESIGN DETAILS Key design details this season are structured shoulders and bringing back powerdressing in womenswear. The main details are shoulder pads and frills on the upper body to repesent the working woman of the 80s. Expect strong and structured silhouettes to reflect this concept with added sequins and layering materials with fabrics such as metallic foils, silk and polyester satin.
