Back protectors for skiers too

The first drafts of the company logo were designed. The first logo featured a speed demon as a symbol of dynamism and rebellion

Kristian Ghedina, Deborah Compagnoni and the Italian National Team use Dainese back protectors at the World Cup for the first time. This was the first time that the back protector was introduced to the world of Winter Sports.

Mobile research D-Mobile is created. This mobile research structure was an extension of the R&D department and visited race tracks around the world to identify and test the latest technological innovations.

Dainese became the “Safety Partner” of the Italian National Ski Team and D-Mobile provided assistance to skiers in the Alpine Skiing World Championship races.

Following their success in the worlds of motorbikes, mountain bikes and skiing, Dainese decided to accept a new challenge and to bring the concept of safety to horse riding. The Dainese Equestrian Line was awarded a prize in the Safety & Security category by Beta International, the international event leader for the equestrian trade.

Dainese signed a three-year collaboration agreement with Fischer to introduce equipment aimed at significantly increasing safety on the ski slopes.

The collaboration with Barry Sheene led to the creation of the first back protector designed by Marc Sadler.

Collaboration began with Doctor Costa's Mobile Clinic.

The first Dainese ski helmet appears at the World Championship Series, developed with the assistance of the multiple title winner Lasse Kjus.

Special helmets and suits were created by the Dainese R&D Department for the “Sparks of Passion” event in which ice skaters played a key role in the magnificent choreography staged for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 20th Winter Olympic Games in Turin.

During the Valencia Grand Prix, the Dainese R&D department introduced D-air® Racing in full active form. During the practice sessions, a fall by Simone Grotzky saw the first airbag deployment.

The collaboration between Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Dainese continued to make astronaut's lives safer. Dainese had already passed the NASA supplier selection procedure for making special protective items which astronauts would wear inside their space suits.

Back protectors, which up to that time were used only on the track, became available to the general public.

The No Impact division was formed to bring Dainese know-how to other sports: MTB, snowboard and alpine skiing.

Dainese became increasingly popular in the world of mountain biking and became the byword for protection. Dainese provided the champions Shaun Palmer, Anne-Caroline Chausson and Cedric Gracia with its protection systems. Nicolas Vouilloz became World Downhill Champion for the seventh time and entered the history books of mountain-biking with Dainese.

Dainese was founded at Molvena (Vicenza). The first article Dainese produced was a pair of motocross trousers.

The Dainese Technology Centre (D-Tec®) is created, an R&D technical centre for the study of protective technology and the development of products for the market.

BIOSUIT

SEA-GUARD

WHAT IS THE BIOSUIT? Starting from Arthur Iberall’s studies in the Fourties, it has been discovered that there are certain points of the body that, despite movements, do not contract and do not stretch. By connecting these points through the so-called “lines of non-extention”, pressure remains constant. BioSuit is designed to connect these points, being able to apply the necessary mechanic pressure to the body, although without compromising movement. The news is exactly the replacement of pneumatic pressurization with mechanic one. The inside of astronaut’s suits, in fact, in order for humans to survive in the vacuum of space, need to provide pressure. The skintight suit allows for a degree of movement impossible in a gas-filled suit.

The Dainese Group is the “Official Safety Partner” of the 2017 America’s Cup Winner Emirates Team New Zealand. The crew, who for the first time chose pedals instead of traditional “coffee grinders” to operate the winches, wore the new SEA-GUARD jacket designed and developed by Dainese, which integrates protection and aerodynamic performance with its floating functions. At over 50 knots, the conditions facing the crew are extreme, similar to those to which MotoGP riders are exposed. On-board safety is therefore the key element behind the partnership between Dainese and Emirates Team New Zealand.This has led to the creation of SEA-GUARD, the first item of protective clothing specially designed for competitive sailing. Thanks to a wise balance between Crash Absorb material and low-density PE, SEA-GUARD, in addition to its floating function, provides impact protection and also allows complete freedom of movement for next-generation grinders, who use their leg power to push pedals instead of armpowered winch grinding.

WHEN DID THE BIOSUIT GO TO SPACE? BioSuit has not gone to space yet. BioSuit was born from one of NASA’s needs who, for the first human journey to the Red Planet expected around 2030, has set up a project to design a new space suit, lighter and more practical. HOW WAS THE BIOSUIT MADE? The lines of non-extension are represented by the red and black filaments that decorate the BioSuit prototype. The suit will be made of elastic material, but for all other features options remain open. For sure, BioSuit must guarantee to astronauts oxygen inflow, protect them from effects of prolonged microgravity, solar radiation and impacts with micrometeoroids, although offering greater flexibility and finding the perfect balance with ergonomics and comfort.

SEA-GUARD is the only ergonomic and comfortable solution designed to optimise crew performance. SEA-GUARD incorporates an aerodynamic motorcycle hump, together with the Oxygen tank housing – something that the sailors must use in emergencies such as when the boat capsizes - and for on-board communication devices.

HOW DID THIS PROJECT COME ABOUT? Conceived by Dava Newman, MIT Professor and NASA’S Deputy Administartor, BioSuir has been designed by Trotti and Associates, owned by Argentinian space architect Guillermo Trotti, whereas the first prototypes are the outcome of the Dainese Science and Research Center’s know-how. -8-

OUTER JACKET PERFORMANCE

AWA M1 is the collection’s ultimate layering system garment comprised of a three-layer waterproof breathable outer shell and an insulating packable inner jacket. Both garment layers integrate TRAILKNIT seamless knitted constructions. It’s the first time Dainese introduces a knitted construction as an outer layer exposed the elements. The new AWA M1 shell features a TRAILKNIT knitted shoulder and sleeve construction that is more form fitting, since its elasticity allows it to more closely contour the body. Extra curvature was introduced into the knitted construction without seams. With the differentiated seamless knitting pattern and texture, sleeves are more elastic and more naturally respond to movement. To ensure waterproofing in the harshest alpine conditions the knitted panels were laminated with a proprietary waterproof breathable membrane and DWR treated on exposed outer fabric. The underjacket featurse trailknit on the undersleeve and side, right along with the outer jacket vents.

AWA M2 consists of a dual-layering system that comprise of a three-layer waterproof breathable outer shell and an insulated, packable inner jacket. The outer shell has a subdued aesthetic with glossy printed details on undersleeve and sides resembling a space suit Dainese engineered for astronauts. AWA M2 has an emergency rollout hood made with a translucent fabric that is also utilized in a sleeve pocket. The translucent pocket fabric has positive safety implications as it can store a phone with a flash light for emergency visibility.

AWA pants are synthetically insulated and paired with the reliable waterproof protection of D-Dry Plus. They are ergonomically crafted with carefully articulated patterning and cargo pockets on the thighs accessible via reliable YKK VISLON® AquaGuard® zippers.

The AWA Mid Full Zip Man features a special construction that blends a performanceoriented look and a snug fit with the functionality of seamless and Pontetorto Technostretch technologies. The first element enables a play on colors and a fit that adapts to the shape of the body in the areas that are extended the most. The Pontetorto Technostretch weave ensures skiers a high level of breathability, keeping humidity and sweat on the outside of the garment.

Designed for those who wants to feel cool during different outdoor activities, the AWA MID 2 combines the great functionalities of technical fabrics with a directly recognizable, retro-futuristic look that is perfectly in line with the AWA concept. The hybrid construction of this garment provides to the wearer a soft feel touch thanks to the Sylkitex, what’s more, the armpit is engineered with seamless inserts, ensuring great breathability and leaving the moisture outside. The brand new AWA lady collection is what Dainese conceived for those ladies who don’t want to go unnoticed, in both everyday life and on the ski slopes. The concept was developed with strict attention to detail and premium quality materials, developing something never seen before. A collection which breaks the rules of womens’ skiwear: starting from the uniqueness of the cloak hood (1), enriched with YKK® shiny buckles and buttons (2), to the intricate neck construction made with seamless technology(3) for improved breathability. The garment is finished with a zip regulating system (4) on the sleeves and an embroidery representing the AWA acronym.

Once again the AWA collection sets the benchmark for using high performance fabrics and technologies while maintaining the layering system concept. The outer layer is made with high performance D-DRY®+ 3L (5) membrane (30.000 mm water column /30.000 g/m2/24hrs), which, thanks to the YKK® VISLON® Aquaguard (6), protects the wearer from treacherous weather conditions, and thanks to its great breathability, stays dry, adapting perfectly to a wide variety of activity levels. The inner jacket was completely redesigned, making the fit even better and using high quality materials that contribute to the stylish look of the garment, while maintaining a high performance level. The superior insulation of the inner jacket is ensured by the rich baby camel wool (7) that naturally adapts to body temperature and has a soft, fluffly, “cloud” feel on the skin. The internal part of the inner jacket is embellished by the use of Pertex Quantum (8).

The AWA L1.1 jacket is conceived for those ladies who don’t want to go unnoticed, wheter on the ski slopes or in everyday life. The next generation of AWA Ladies brings back the the layering concept but with a new look, that is more style oriented. The outer shell is made with D-DRY+, a high performance membrane capable to resist to treacherous weather conditions while the precious baby camel wool padding of the inner jacket provides great insulation to protect the wearer from coldest days. HP is for Hard Pack. 1 means speed and performance, and RC for Race Carve: thus the perfect recipe of a unique jacket, specifically conceived for those skiers who love to ski early in the morning, drawing their own line down the slopes and breaking the limits. HP means skiing regardless of the weather conditions. That’s why we decided to split the jacket into two different layers that work perfectly together, providing the wearer with the highest possible performance. The outer layer of the jacket is made of D-DRY® + membrane (1) that protects the skier from even the worst weather conditions (30.000 mm water column /30.000 g/m2/24hrs), while its construction provides enhanced breathability and keeps him dry during any level of activity.

The inner part of the garment combines 3 different fabric technologies to provide the skier the best possible fit, breathability and insulation. The torso construction features the use of two different fabric technologies: the Pertex® Quantum® (2) on the outer layer that is lightweight, soft to the touch and windproof to retain warmth. The insulation layer is made with Polartec® Alpha® (3), with a construction that features active insulation technology that regulates core body temperature during both dynamic and static activity. The sleeves are made with Trailknit (4), the seamless construction introduced in the 2017 Dainese AWA collection, which follows perfectly the body’s movements and, thanks to Dryarn® (4) yarn, leaves the moisture outside and keeps the skier dry while sweating.

The HP1 Mid Full Zip Man features a special construction that blends a performanceoriented look and a snug fit with the functionality of seamless and Pontetorto Technostretch technologies. The first element enables a play on colors and a fit that adapts to the shape of the body in the areas that are extended the most. The Pontetorto Technostretch weave ensures skiers a high level of breathability, keeping humidity and sweat on the outside of the garment.

The HP1 MID 2 MAN is the second layer conceived specifically to satisfy the needs of most demanding skiers. Thanks to its particular hybrid construction this second layer is engineered to satisfy skiers needs and make the wearer to enhance its performance and comfort while using. The complex construction is provided by three different fabric technologies, specifically applied on mapped zones of the body. The upper part in Seamless 3D provides muscle compression and the armpit in Seamless 2D provides great breathability while the torso construction in Polartec Power wool provides insulation and leave the moisture outside.

HP 1 BL SHIRT/PANTS Starting from Arthur Iberall’s studies in the Fourties, it has been discovered that there are certain points of the body that, despite movements, do not contract and do not stretch. By connecting these points through the so called “lines of non-extension” (1), pressure remains constant. These studies inspired the construction of the BIOSUIT, Dainese’s project enginereed to satisfy NASA’s needs who, for the first human journey to the Red Planet expected around 2030, has set up a project to design a new space suit, lighter and more practical. The new HP Base Layer collection is strictly inspired by this project, introducing the “lines of non-extension” that compress muscles during intense activity while the Dryan® (2) provides the skier with great thermal insulation and moisture management.

The HP1 BL is the Dainese First Layer specifically designed for those who wants to push past their limits and conceived to satisfy the needs of most demanding skiers. Years of research into the dynamics of the human body have helped determine which parts of the body are never extended or contracted, despite movement. By joining these points along “non-extension lines”, the pressure placed on the body is kept constant. This research helped Dainese engineer the BIOSUIT, designed for NASA astronauts, and was the inspiration behind the structure of the HP1 BL M SHIRT/HP1 BL L SHIRT. Seamless technology and the Dryarn fabric are combined togheter to provide great insulation with maximum breathability, coolness and comfort. SMART REGULATIONS

The engineered hybrid construction of the D-Brid features an upper part in ABS (1) and a lower In-Mould (2) construction. With this particular structure the helmet provides the skier a lightweight feel and greater impact resistance.

Thanks to the 18 air venting (3) spread across the top and side, the D-Brid keeps the wearer fresh even during the hottest days, while the active venting system allows the skier to close the ventings when not needed. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more, the integrated ventings (4) on the front part of the helmet prevent the googles from steaming up while going down the slopes.

The helmet is finished with intelligent details that contribute to the pemium quality of this product. Back rotor size micro adjustment and the comfotable inner liner contribute to a great fit , while the Fidlock (5) is functional simplicity, making it easy to use with one hand for on and off buckle use.

Dermizax®NX has wicking properties that are twice as effective as those of traditional membranes (30,000 g/m2/24 hours 2- layer). Despite this, Dermizax™NX successfully retains the same high degree of waterproofing that Dermizax™ is renowned for (minimum 20,000 mm), utilizing moving molecules as opposed to most other membranes which have micropores. The membrane guarantees efficient thermoregulation with excellent self-regulating properties for breathability and moisture management.

Dermizax™ EV is a waterproof, windproof, and wicking membrane that utilizes moving molecules, as opposed to most other membranes which have micropores. This offers a number of advantages and makes Dermizax™ shell clothing the very best on the market thanks to its high performance and superior durability. The Dermizax™ membrane is extremely flexible. It has an elasticity of more than 200%. In practice, this means that the membrane can be stretched up to twice its own length in four directions. This ensures that Dermizax™ garments are very comfortable to move in, while reducing the risk of delamination during extreme activities.

Camels shed their hair naturally every year and the fibre is shorn, gathered or combed. The inner coat is passed through a de-hairing machine, in the same way as cashmere, a slow and expensive process. Baby camel fibre is softer and lighter in colour than that of an adult, and it is more expensive. Baby camel varies from white to fawn, while the adults tend to be darker brown. Baby camel is a great alternative to cashmere: it has a similar micron count but it is much more affordable. Camel fibre is also easier to dye with natural dyes as it is less likely to felt than cashmere. Camel down looks like a fluffy cloud and it is easy to spin long drawn, even without any hand carding. Camel tops are combed like wool tops and you can spin it anyway you like.

Unlike regular sheep who chew grass in the lowlands, the merino is built to survive the scorching summers and freezing winters of New Zealand’s rugged Southern Alps range. The merino can survive these extremes because of the incredible natural engineering of their fleece. Super lightweight and breathable, the merino’s summer coat keeps cool in temperatures of up to +35°C. In winter, the merino grows an extra layer of wool over their base coat to protect them against temperatures that plummet to -20°C. Simple, efficient, ingenious. Nature’s solutions aren’t tested in laboratories; they face the ultimate field test.

D-Dry® Plus is a proprietary microporous laminated structure that creates a waterproof and breathable fabric. Micropores are thousands of times smaller than a drop of water, but larger than water vapor, so they exclude water allowing moist vapor on the inside to move outward. D-Dry® Plus is devised of a unique, new three layer construction. This includes an ultra lightweight scrim fabric that is laminated on the back of the waterproof/breathable layer, sandwiching between the scrim, the membrane and the face fabric. This new overall construction is lighter, more packable and more durable. D-Dry® Plus effectively balances protection from rain and snow on the outside (30.000 mm water column) with the ability to let warm perspiration escape outward during high-output activities (30.000 g/m2/24hrs).

TRAILKNIT is a fabric construction developed by electronic knitting machines linking loops of yarns on needles. This knitted construction differs from a traditional woven fabric as it is more flexible and can be more effortlessly constructed. TRAILKNIT has been developed for garments that are elastic and better respond to the skier’s motion. A garment featuring a knitted construction is more form fitting, since its elasticity allows it to contour the body more closely. Knitted constructions also enable extra curvature to be introduced without seams – akin to the heel of a sock. Knitting allows an extremely complex fabric construction: The yarn in TRAILKNIT fabric follows a meandering path that can change seamlessly forming different stitching patterns that design precise functional zoning with engineered performance in key areas.

This thermal padding in high-quality microfibre offers elevated insulation properties and softness combined with low water absorbption. PrimaLoft® Gold insulation: the benchmark in performance of all synthetic insulations. PrimaLoft Silver insulation: a high-performance insulation with the full spectrum of features to brave the elements.

A hybrid of PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation Down Blend and PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation, PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation Boost is a fusion of 80% PrimaLoft® ultra-fine fibers and 20% water-repellent down engineered to deliver incredible lightweight warmth and wet weather performance in a luxuriously soft and remarkably slim silhouette. Unmatched warmth-to-thickness thermals mean more warmth in a smaller package for greater agility and freedom of movement while a PrimaLoft® proprietary treatment ensures protective performance in variable conditions. For streamlined performance this solution blends the wet-weather protection of PrimaLoft® synthetic insulation with the enhancement of down.

Pertex® Quantum uses a tightly woven structure to provide a light and soft fabric that allows insulation to fully loft. Precisely constructed from incredibly fine yarns, Pertex® Quantum fabrics are designed to trap still air and improve the efficiency of insulation. A durable water repellent (DWR) finish sheds light rain and snow to provide additional weather protection. Garments made with Pertex Quantum gain great lightweight and packability, soft touch feel and windproofness to retain warmth.

Dainese‘s synthetic microfiber thermal insulation material. It offers good standard in terms of warmth to weight ratio and a relatively good compressibility.

Down works as an insulator by trapping air. The more air that is trapped, the greater the loft of the down. It is by this loft that the performance of down can be measured. The volume a fixed quantity of down will occupy is commonly referred to as its Fill Power (FP). A Fill Power of 750 represents an outstanding quality and it‘s one of the highest levels consistently available. Down “quality” is also expressed by the ratio of down to small feather. A filling of 100 grams in a “90/10“-mixture contains 90 grams of down and 10 grams of feathers.

Polartec® Alpha® is a new active insulation fabric technology that regulates core body temperatures during dynamic and static activities. This advanced thermal material offers more design versatility than traditional puffy styles by providing enhanced fiber stability in a compressible high loft construction. Alpha® can be paired with more openconstruction woven fabrics to create complete air permeable packages that are truly customizable on both the face and back of the fabric.

Polartec® High Loft™ was created to expand and enhance the performance benefits and design applications of fleece technologies. By utilizing a high loft fiber construction we developed a stunningly soft and fluffy structure that compresses to pack easily in small spaces. Large air pockets created by the extended fibers retain optimal warmth to provide the highest warmth to weight ratio of any thermal fleece fabric available today. The lofted fibers create large air pockets for retaining optimal body warmth and releasing excess heat for enhanced breathability during activities. This fluffy structure also reduces surface friction for comfortable layering with other materials.

Polartec® Thermal Pro® fabrics are the most visually dynamic and technically advanced of the Polartec® insulation fabrics. Available in a variety of unique surface textures and patterns, many of which enhance performance, Polartec® Thermal Pro® fabrics are great styling options for virtually every end use. New high loft versions have achieved the highest warmth to weight ratios of any fabric Polartec® has ever offered. Other versions have the look of traditional wool with all the performance benefits of fleece. Polartec® Thermal Pro® is our most diverse family of fabrics.

Polartec® Power Dry® fabrics are designed to keep your skin dry when you sweat. All fabrics in this series feature a patented bi-component knit construction that uses different yarns on either side of the fabric. This creates two different surfaces: one that is optimized to move moisture away from the skin, the other to dry quickly.

Polartec® Power Wool™ is a design breakthrough for combining the distinct advantages of natural and synthetic fibers in a bi-component fabric. The industry standard of blending different yarns into a mixed composition reduces the intended benefits and hampers overall fabric performance. By isolating a merino wool interior and a synthetic fiber exterior we developed a hybrid fabric with distinct surface features to optimize wicking, breathability, odor resistance and durability. Wool fibers offer increased base comfort by retaining insulation and breathability even when wet. Their absorbent nature pulls moisture vapor away from your skin, transferring it to the outer synthetic layer where it expands and evaporates more quickly. This mechanical wicking action allows Polartec® Power Wool™ to keep moisture in motion at all times.

Polartec® Power Shield® was developed to bring greater strength and versatility to the soft shell fabric category. By designing a dense knit multi-component fabric we created a stronger balance between warmth, weather resistance and breathability. This adaptable protection set a new industry standard for performance fabrics that could remain comfortable and excel in calm to inclement weather conditions. By integrating an advanced micro-porous membrane between a durable weather repelling exterior we created a resilient outerwear fabric with increased breathability. The ability to block wind and water was finally directly integrated with a surface technology that could consistently increase breathability during any activity.

The Tecnostretch line from Pontetorto creates a new paradigm for fabrics with a technical outer surface, high elasticity, and high thermal insulation. It’s a jersey fabric with a smooth outer side that is resistant to abrasion, an inner pile that maintains heat, and an elastomeric fiber between the two layers to provide the maximum comfort and wearability. The production of these jersey structures requires the most modern textile machinery and a high level of specialization. The inner face grid structure advantages are a lighter weight, fantastic breathability and the ability to be compressed into a nice, packable size.

Textiles with Schoeller®-PCM™ contain innumerable tiny microcapsules filled with Phase Change Materials (PCM). These microcapsules react to temperature differences by altering their aggregate condition from solid to liquid and vice-versa. If the body temperature or the outside temperature rises, the excess warmth is stored. When the temperature drops, the previously-stored warmth is released again. Schoeller®-PCM™ actively balances out temperatures which are too high or too low and thus always ensure the wearer‘s personal comfort climate.

Flexagon redefines the standards of protective comfort with its innovative construction technology. The exceptional flexibility is aided by overlapping layers of Crash Absorb® memory retention foam that move independently of one another, and follow the anatomy of the body. Its ergonomic pattern of hexagon shaped soft pads provide comfort and maximum freedom of movement (6 sides, mobility on the 30° 90° and 150° axes) along with effective protection.

Flex Technology is the exclusive construction used in most of Dainese’s soft spine protectors. The back panel is formed by two overlapping layers that are free to move independently, this ensures a perfect fit with the anatomy of the back. Each layer is broken down in different plates accurately replicating all back conformations in the typical riding positions.

The best-known, most widely-used back protector. Composite construction with anatomically-shaped base and articulated top plates. The structure of this back protector is designed to dissipate the impact energy by spreading the impact forces over the entire surface area of the protector rather than through simple shock absorption. An aluminium honeycomb core provide the best shock absorption in relation to weight (30 grammes), thickness and cost. In addition, the ample open areas allows effective air flow for body heat and moisture to escape.

Shield Air features articulated polypropylene outer plates with a micro honeycomb perforated structure. The whole back panel is widespread vented and it integrates also a RECCO® Rescue System refletor.

The composite plates of the Manis move with controlled elasticity and so offers four dimensions of freedom. Thanks to the elasticated tendons that connects the plates, it can extend by up to eight per cent of its length; it can flex laterally up to an angle of 25° on either side; it can twist and flex forward. The special padded liner boasts a sandwich construction of 3 different materials, each of which performs a different function: Expanded polyethylene (ePE) for dimensional stability, Crash Absorb for impact absorption, and thermoformed expanded polyurethane (ePU) for comfort. The entire structure is perforated throughout to enable maximum heat exchange.

With a shape and armour system inspired by crustaceans and the armadillo, the BAP featured a composite structure, comprising an anatomically-shaped soft base and a series of articulated plates, each sized to provide the best distribution of impact forces and incorporating a low-memory, shock-absorbing polyurethane foam insert.

Synthetic polymer used to produce the hard shell plates in protectors. Distinguished by elevated resistance to abrasion and impact. With their special construction, composite plates on the shoulders, elbows and knees comply to EN 1621.1/97 Standard. The rigid external shell absorbs and distributes impact energy over the protector’s entire surface thanks to a patented reticulate structure that also offers lower thickness and weight.

Soft Flex Hybrid combines the hard-shell technology with protector. The superb flexibility of Crash Absorb® memory adapts to the shape and movement of the body is coupled in thermoformed shock absorbent Polystyrene for increased critical areas.
