ou don’t have to go to Alaska to mush dogs. There are plenty of opportunities right in Maine. There are many recreational mushers, racers and now more people are offering rides and tours throughout the state. Many different types of dogs will pull sleds but it is in the breeding of huskies to want to run and pull. They LOVE their work!
ing but the minimum is usually three and can go upwards from there. There are different positions of the dogs in the team. The leader is in the front and the most important dog in having the team operate smoothly. They learn to hold the line tight so the dogs behind don’t get tangled, verbal commands are used for turning left and right and some mushers have their leaders trained to turn their teams totally around to go a different direction. Swing dogs run behind the leaders, team dogs in the middle and wheel dogs in front of the sled. The wheel dogs tend to be bigger, stronger dogs.
Owning sled dogs is a huge commitment as they, like children, require a lot of time and want as much attention as you can give them and even more. Each dog has their own personality with feelings, moods and needs, just like people. Owning sled dogs isn’t for everyone as the care is 24/7 and the expense is huge. But it is also one of the most thrilling and unforgettable experiences one can have in their lives. Hooking up a team of huskies can be deafening with the excited barking and noise that is created but once you pull the knot of the tied up sled and are heading down the trail it is silent except for the panting dogs and sound of the dogsled runners on the snow. At Mahoosuc Guide Service they raise their dogs from puppies and keep them until they pass on. The level of care and commitment they have to our dogs is immense. In the summer they have pastures they run in daily to keep in shape and keep away boredom. Once they retire they move into our daylight basement and enjoy soft beds, no bugs, no blizzards and easy listening music on the radio. Safety is our number one concern on our trips. We don’t take the “thrills and spills” approach to mushing. Our clients and the dogs safety is paramount. Mahoosuc Guide Service offers day trips and fully outfitted overnight trips varying in length from 2 – 10 days in length. Our trips are as hands on as the client would like. Some people like to be a passenger in the sled, others want to handle a team alone, others like to go on a sled with a guide.

On the overnight trips people are camping in the luxury of traditional canvas wall tents heated by portable woodstoves and fir boughs as the floor. Everyone can enjoy warm hearty meals, close camaraderie and the occasional contented howl from the huskies right outside the tents. Song in the Woods customized dogsled trips are designed with input from the customer so they get the kind of trip they feel suits them. We are a small kennel and strive to help people have a memorable trip that is safe and affordable. Our trips range from ½ day adventures to multi-day expeditions with a variety of lodging options. We operate mostly in the Moosehead Lake region but have also traveled to other area’s for colleges, schools and festivals. NORDIC SKIING Five Fields Farm Hosts Skiers Cross-country skiing has been part of Five Fields Farm for a decade. Our apple operation is smaller now and we enjoy sharing our location with others in the winter season. An elevation of 850 feet places us on the right side of the “snow line”. When it snows in the foothills of the White Mountains, we usually have to shovel. Parking is where we formerly loaded trucks of fruit. Prepare for your outing or warm up in our winterized retail stand. We have rental equipment in all sizes including snowshoes. The trail system starts on our back lawn, and totals 27 K. Looping around the orchards, it connects with the logging roads, and links with lands owned by abutters, including the Loon Echo Land Trust on Bald Pate Mountain. While groomed trails do not extend to the summit, snowshoe hikers and more adventuresome skiers regularly make the 20 minute back-country trek for a view to the horizon including numerous ponds, lakes, and on clear days Mt. WashingtonTrails are largely one way, with bidirectional skiing only where absolutely necessary. Guidance and terrain is available to start the inexperienced, and the trail system is designed such that new skiers will rapidly be able to access all portions.

My father says, “You can change the world, if you get everyone on a pair of cross county skis”. I suppose this is why when my sisters and I each took our first stride; we did so in a pair of blue leather boots with 75mm bindings atop hand-carved wooden skis. “It’s easier than walking” he’d say as we shuffled our feet across the soft, white blanket of snow. While much has changed in those past thirty years, our dedication to helping other skiers, new and seasoned, remains the same. Carter’s Cross Country Ski Center is a family owned and operated business. We have two locations, each with unique ski trails and accommodations. Both ski centers are groomed for skate and classic skiing and are dog friendly. Accommodations include a trail pass, which can be used at both ski centers. Our Oxford location is home to one of the largest selections of quality ski equipment and accessories in the northeast. We have everything from touring packages to top of the line racing equipment to fit your family and budget. There are 25km of wooded groomed trails for beginner to intermediate skiers. Our Bethel center has 45km of groomed trails from beginner to intermediate to advanced as well as backcountry. Trails extend from pasture to river to mountain and include views of Mt. Washington and Sunday River. Bethel accommodations include a ski lodge and two trailside mountain cabins. Camden Snow Bowl is getting in on the latest glade expansion craze happening across Maine. They are opening Glade number 8 this year and it will be located off Spinnaker. Of course don’t forget about the 22nd annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships being held February 10-12. In reality, they have several things in common: excellent balance, a strong dynamically active lower body, a stable core and upper body as well as cardiovascular fitness and endurance sufficient to perform skillfully. Dynamic mobility and flexibility are essential elements that allow the body to move into and out of extreme positions, help prevent injury and allow less energy to be expended. Base cardiovascular fitness will aid the recovery process after demanding runs as well as allow for frequent and intense training off the hill. A strong cardiovascular base is essential for day to day recovery after long days on the hill. My Ski Prep Fitness class, taught at The Rangeley Fitness Center, uses Dynamic Integrated Circuit training, which is relatively short, specific and intense by integrating several training variables in one session. Jeff recommends working your way to kettlebell swings while standing on a Bosu ball.

Oh yeah and to also talk about his favorite outdoor activities and how they play a part in the enjoyment of his home state as well as an off season regiment.

Seth’s favorite sushi item world wide is Torro and as for summer recreation/cross training its surfing, river swimming, mountain biking and golf. Winter comes earlier to the Jackman area than any other place in Maine. Winter also leaves the Jackman area later than any other place in Maine. These long winters make the area a choice destination for snow lovers, whether it is to ride a snowmobile, trek on snowshoes, cross country ski or ice fish one of the many lakes, Jackman has it all. Jackman is nestled in the Moose River Valley in the northwestern mountains 15 miles from the Quebec border. This location is conducive to snow and gets plenty of it, with an average of 110 inches per year. Jackman has over 100 miles of groomed snowmobile trails that are part of the interstate trail system. In addition to that, there are
many more miles of groomed trails to make scenic loops with less traffic. The Border Riders Sportsman Club owns three groomers to make sure the trails are smooth and safe at all times. Grooming typically begins December 15th and there is usually riding until mid April. The trails are all well marked so even the novice riders can find their way around. If you don’t have a snowmobile and want to give it a try, machine can be rented in town and there are also guides to take you around and show you the sights. For riders and spectators alike, there will be a snowmobile race at

A Family-Friendly Sport with Lots of Festivals for Everyone
Downtown Millinocket is one of the few places in the world that hosts a snowmobile parade right through the middle of its business section on Penobscot Avenue, every year in celebration of Winterfest. The festivities this year begin on February 17 at 6 p.m. on Friday with a parade through the downtown, followed by an antique snowmobile show and rides on Saturday, along with an ice fishing derby, poker run and other events.

Even if you’ve never hit the trails before, snowmobiling can be a safe and fun sport.
“We have some of the best trails in Maine and I don’t know of any other downtown where they actually put snow on the streets so the snowmobilers can have smooth riding for their parade,” said Jean Boddy, the office coordinator of the Katahdin Area Chamber of Commerce. The Cushman Family of Gorham loves to go snowmobiling with all of their four sons as well as friends they’ve made through the sport. They especially love attending the snowmobile festivals held at various locations throughout the state. “We look at snowmobiling as a tool to bring families together and repair relationships. The snowmobile culture consists of clubs that are all part of one big family,” said

There are almost 300 snowmobile clubs in Maine that have worked hard to foster good landowner relations and to promote snowmobile safety and education. Clubs host many of the yearly festivals and events that include activities even for those who don’t snowmobile.
Maine has more than 14,500 miles of snowmobile trails – most on private land and groomed by volunteers. The Maine Snowmobile Association (MSA) and its clubs and members have worked diligently to improve the reputation of snowmobiles and to encourage the respect of the rights of landowners. Down East Sunrise Trails offers nearly 90 miles of multi-use winter recreation You can ski, snowmobile, or snowshoe on Maine’s Down East Sunrise Trail, stretching from just outside of Ellsworth to Ayers Junction, just a few miles from Calais. Along the way you will be treated to views of mountains and hills, marshes, fields, forests and wildlife. “Presently the snowmobile clubs in the area groom the trail and we ski it regularly. It is really a spectacular place. You can be skiing along and there is Schoodic Mountain in all its glory right in front of you,” the Bill Ceckler, the president of the Downeast Sunrise Trail Coalition. “We’ve never had any good quality east-west snowmobile trails in that region because essentially every trail would go in a northerly direction to get away from the ocean,” said Scott Ramsay, the director of the off-road vehicle division for the Maine Department of Conservation. “There are at least four trails that this trail connects together with beautiful loops in the area. Folks that live in Ellsworth can travel only five minutes and be on a quality trail.” The trail also passes through many towns that have restaurants, hotels, gas stations and Bed and Breakfasts. In fact, some businesses have groomed trails that lead directly to the sunrise trail. There are also kiosks along the trail with information for trail users. “It is an incredible ride and the variety of scenery is amazing. We’ve seen wildlife including deer, turkeys, partridge, fox and eagles. It isn’t a dead end ride. You can get somewhere,” said Joe McPhail, the president of the Dennysville Snowmobile and ATV Club, whose club grooms 19 miles of the trail in the winter. “When there isn’t snow on the trail, hikers, joggers, ATVers, bicyclists and equestrians are using the trail. inter can be an amazing time of year to capture images. Challenges, however, can arise from both the cold and trying to shoot the pure winter white snow. Here are a few tips to help you with your winter photography activity. Prepare your camera for the cold and the inclement weather. Keep your camera cold. Even though it may be tempting to tuck your camera into your jacket, warming and cooling your camera may cause condensation and render your camera unusable. It is easier to brush falling snow off a cold camera as well. Don’t try to blow snow off your camera with your breath; this can cause a frozen mess of condensation. An item I keep handy is a chamois cloth and put it over my camera and lens during light precipitation. When the weather really is at odds with keeping dry, be it our Maine winter rain or heavy snowfall, try a large zip lock freezer bag. Simply cut a hole at the bottom of the bag and slip it over your camera. Your view finder will be exposed by the opening of the bag. Running outside in winter? Are you crazy? Although cold weather can really play havoc on your running regimen, all you need are a few key strategies and a firm running goal, and you’ll be running in any kind inclement weather. First, set a Specific Goal. There is nothing more motivating than to train for a race. You can plan to run The Mid Winter 10 Miler, Irish Road Rover 5K or a Spring Marathon. Also, Run With a Buddy or Group. You’ll have a built in motivational source, friends to chat with and it is safer to run in numbers. Running with others is a great way to beat the winter doldrums.

Be seen. If you run when it is dark out, wear a reflective vest, flashing lights or a headlamp so you’re seen by traffic. Also, run with a runner’s I.D. in your shoe or pocket—just in case. Wearing a traction device like Yak Trax will give you better traction and stability in the snow. Choose to run on packed or fresh snow. You will get better traction on fresh snow and reduce the chance for slipping. Stay Low and shorten your running stride keeping your feet lower to the ground. You will run more efficiently and reduce the risk of slipping, falling or straining muscles. Start into the wind, so you have the wind at your back on your way home. You’ll avoid getting chilled by the wind after you’ve been sweating. Keep it fun, but safe; Mix up your routes and use common sense and remember ... Run Happy!
For clothing, layering is the key. Consider wearing a layer that blocks the wind, such as winter pants with ¾ tights underneath and a top that wicks the moisture away from your skin. Additionally, include gloves and a hat. Overheating is easy to do, so dressing for 15 to 20 degrees warmer than it actually is will allow your body temperature to increase and reduce the risk of overheating and excessive sweat. You should feel slightly chilled when you start. Remember, sometimes less is more.

3 Steps to Great Fitting Alpine Ski Boots Dave Palese, Gorham Bike and Ski Boot Fitter Do you want to improve your performance out on the slopes? Do you want your feet to be comfortable and warm for a full day on the snowFor those who have problems with boots, if your feet hurt, customizing your boot to your foot is the answer. My experience has been that the majority of people don’t know all the modifications and adjustments that can be made to their equipment. The goal is to have the equipment conform to you and not the other way around. Below are the 3 key steps to making your boots fit like a glove. 1. You must start with the right boot. You can’t go by just your ability level. Be sure whatever shop you purchase your boots at does a proper sizing of your feet. And this mean more than just the length. The goal here is to match the boot to the skier for the best fit possible. 2. Start from the Bottom Up The footbed in an alpine ski boot, and really any piece of performance footwear, is literally the foundation and starting point to fitting the boot to your feet. The ugly truth is that footbeds provoided by the manufacturers in alpine ski boots aren’t worth much. The padding they provide usually isn’t that great and they lend next to no support. The goal of the
manufacturer’s footbeds, or “sock liners” as they are called in the footwear world, is to ensure that the boot is comfortable when tried on in the store and nothing about the footbed is offensive in anyway as to avoid turning the customer off. They are designed expecting that they will be thrown away early on. When you try on boots, make the investment from the very beginning in at least a pair of “drop-in” or “trim-to-fit footbeds”. Even better is to get a pair of custom-molded footbeds for optimal supportThe footbeds we are talking about are designed to ensure that your foot is properly supported and stable inside your ski boot. Unlike running, skiing is a static activity and the position of the foot in the boot is fixed from the ankle down. 3. Possibilities Abound Manufactures build several mechanical adjustments into the boots such as canting (tilting) the cuff to the natural angle of your lower leg. Some boots even have a forefoot width adjustments. Beyond those adjustments, many modifications can be made to the boot’s liner, boot board (what is under the liner in the shell) and the shell itself to make sure that the boot fits snug and gives you maximum control, while at the same time provides hours of comfort and warmth for many years. Dog sledding: A brief history It is believed that dog teams were used extensively by fur trappers from Northern Quebec & Hudson bay area down into northern New England. This is the how & why that dogdriving came into Maine. In the last forty years, the service traditionally performed by sled dogs has largely been relegated to mechanical means like snowmachines and bush planes, and dog team driving has become substantially recreational and educational. The Sebago Ice Fishing Derby is in its 12th year that takes place on Maine’s second largest lake in the southern part of the state, just a half-hour drive from Portland.
The statewide fishing derby is held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all legal bodies of water in Maine. Cost is $20 for an individual or $30 for a family including two adults and up to six children and is also sponsored by the Windham Rotary Club.

Tom Noonan of Raymond came up with the idea for the derby nearly 15 years ago. The derby, which is sponsored by the Windham Rotary Club is held from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, when anglers are not required to have a license to fish - known as a free fishing weekend- an incentive offered by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to encourage more people to get into the sport of ice fishing. The excitement and number of anglers participating in the Sebago Ice Fishing Derby have grown with each passing year. On a good year there have been estimates of nearly 5,000 people out on the ice. There are other events as well such as snowmobile races and a “mall” of craft, food and merchandise vendors on the frozen lake. The entry fee for the Sebago Ice Fishing Derby is $30 for an individual or $50 for a family that includes two adults and up to six children.

“It is the largest and richest tournament in the state and it has the potential to be the largest fishing derby in the country because most derbies take place at one spot,” said Noonan, who says this goal can be reached with proper planning and organizing during the next five years. “This derby is easier because people can go and fish at their favorite spot where they know the waters and know where the really big fish are.” Prizes for both derbies in the past have included boats and rucks. There is also a kids’ ice fishing derby, 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday February 25, Range Pond State Park, Poland, which is free.
