DIRECTOR’S FORWARD
The Cat Street Gallery is thrilled to announce the launch of Yuki Aruga’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Aruga is a fresh young British talent whose work is underpinned by a preoccupation with time and body, whilst also possessing a strong influence from her Japanese-British bicultural heritage. Aruga’s work draws upon both Western and Eastern artistic traditions and sensibilities. Her works are inspired by European still life paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries, works associated with the concept of the ‘Sublime’, as well as concepts surrounding the Japanese aesthetic, all play a significant and influential role her practice. Aruga graduated from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London in 2008, receiving a 1st Class BA Hons degree in Fine Art Painting. She has since has exhibited in the UK and France and more recently she was commissioned to work on an ambitious project with the charity Elephant Family. Applying her paintings to large fibreglass sculptures of elephants, these incredible sculptures were auctioned and exhibited alongside such artists as Sir Peter Blake, the Chapman Brothers, Marc Quinn, Poly Morgan and Vivienne Westwood.
