DIRECTOR’S FORWARD
The Cat Street Gallery is proud to present Jacky Tsai’s first solo show in Hong Kong, EAST WEST. In this show, Tsai creates western pop art using traditional Chinese crafts, ultimately creating his own Chinese contemporary pop art. “All my art is about the fusion between Eastern and Western culture; every irrelevant element squeezes in a tiny space but in harmony. This show expresses my love of Hong Kong culture, from 70s Kung Fu movies and 90s pop songs to the interesting changes of society after 1997”. Jacky Tsai grew up in Shanghai and after completing his BA at the China Academy of Art he moved to London to study an MA in Communication Design at Central St Martins. Tsaiʼs vision is to create a unique discourse between traditional Eastern craftsmanship and contemporary Western Pop art. The artist has a shared interest in fashion and artwork and after graduating Tsai went on to work with British fashion designer Alexander McQueen. Renowned for designing the Floral Skull prints for Alexander McQueenʼs collections, Jacky Tsai demonstrates his ability to create a balance between traditional Eastern drawing and contemporary Western art. Having directly experienced the changing landscape of China, Tsai is committed to honouring and preserving this regionʼs rich tradition of craft and skill. Jacky Tsai fuses cultures and imagery alongside technique and textile with an innovative approach to traditional materials to produce unique, luxurious and highly skilled works. Featuring lacquer carving, hand-painted porcelain and hand-cut intricate paper works Tsai utilizes this fading artistry and re-works them with contemporary imagery, creating an engaging dialogue between traditional Eastern craft and a Western pop aesthetic. Tsai has exhibited widely including Hong Kong, Singapore, United Kingdom and India. At the age of 30, Tsai is on track to becoming one of Asia’s most acclaimed artists.
