CURATOR | PANG HO-CHEUNG
Born in Hong Kong, 22nd September 1973. PANG Ho-cheung showed a talent for the arts at a young age. At age eight, he started sketching with the esteemed painter Chen Haiying at the Hong Kong Academy of Fine Arts, followed by airbrushing and graphic design at age thirteen as inspired by the works of Hajime Sorayama. He has also actively involved in drama during school. Though fared less well academically and never graduated with a diploma, Pang is a proud secondary school drop-out. His working experiences range from being a postman, peddler, hotel housekeeper, karaoke porter, children painting tutor and restaurant waiter. To make extra dollars, Pang wrote short stories and movie commentaries for local newspapers and magazines which paved his way to his artistic career. In 1994, he took up a role as comedy scriptwriter for Hong Kong Asian Television Limited. Pang is now is a prolific film director, photographer, and writer. He has published over 30 published works and novels, winning the Pusan PPP Award as well as the Taiwan Times Literary Award. INTRODUCTION
I was once fascinated by the Polish version of MIDNIGHT COWBOY’s film poster. Later then I recognised, although Hollywood Films were allowed to screen in Poland during the communistera, these beautiful and surreal pieces of movie artwork, were indeed created as an alternative to banned U.S. publicity material. This political reason led to the emergence of a group of outstanding poster artists such as, Waldemar Swierzy、Marcin Mroszczak、Franciszek Starowieyski and Jan Mlodozeniec etc. By illustration (and sometimes collage), they had find an alternative way to interpret the films. Especially when typical film poster design constrains, i.e. using images of Movie Stars are banned, designers can truly think out of the box for graphic images and create stunning visuals. When the Publication Company suggests publishing the Screenplays of my featured film works, I immediately thought of the troubles that may come along if we need to negotiate all the image rights of Actors from the original film visual materials. Then I decided to eliminate this trouble by following the way that Polish Film Posters did, that is to invite artists to recreate a poster for these 10 featured films from scrap. Firstly, I send invitations to 10 young artist that I selected with the DVD of the film that I deliberately selected for each one of them respectively. The design collaboration on the alternative poster started off once they showed their interest towards this project. As this project is not bonded with investments nor film sales, I gave them total freedom on their graphic interpretation of the film. The final artworks were sent to Chau Digital for a limited edition of 15 Fine Art Digital prints. The Exhibition, REBORN, only aims to eliminate constrains. Pang Ho-cheung
