DIRECTOR’S FOREWORD In conjunction with the grand opening of The Cat Street Gallery’s newest location, Australian artist Tony Lloyd will debut new paintings for his second solo exhibition in Hong Kong. The practice of Tony Lloyd now spans over a decade, containing an evolving body of work that engages in a variety of subjects while maintaining his unique vision. He has been painting roadscapes for a long time, from arcane highways at night to urbanity steeped in peril, progressing into the unfathomable and exploring philosophical and spiritual problems of our time. Playing with colours, the light in the nights he paints are always different. Reproducing cinematic uncertainty, his paintings are at once familiar and strangely elusive. Even though his work has a realistic note, he often distorts landscapes to the point of natural impossibility or implements contrary motives and visual details. His paintings are dreamy and realistic at the same time, always radiating cinematic majesty. In his most recent series of mountain landscapes, which are meticulously painted to depict realistic portrayals, these filmic and dreamlike qualities coexist. Snow-streaked cliff faces are painted in intense icy blues and steel-like greys and are starkly contrasted with looming black silhouettes, yielding to an ominous undertone. Upon viewing the lakes in the foreground, viewers are further confounded by the absence of an authentic reflection. Lloyd has cultivated a distinct style of photorealism. His process involves extracting lowresolution stills from video. He then subtly distorts the images to reduce them to timeless and elemental landscapes.
