DIRECTOR’S FOREWORD
The Cat Street Gallery is thrilled to introduce, Henry Hussey and Vanessa Wong in joint exhibition. YOUND BLOOD will showcase the works of two emerging talents for the first time in a commercial art gallery. Hussey is a young British artist who studied MA in Textiles at the Royal College of Art. In the process of creating his rich and emotive textile works, Hussey explores his own personal history, challenging significant moments in his like by immortalizing them in layers of fabric and embroidery. Hussey works with textiles for its ability to inhabit the previous generations who have handled them and connect to people in a meaningful way. Hussey employs many different techniques and marries them into one piece, his largest works are over four metres in length and incorporate dyed fabrics, cardinals robe, table cloth, knitted yarn, printed fabric, embroidered cotton, faux crystals and pearls, sequins, screen-print and acrylic paints Wong is a young Hong Kong artist who received her Fine Arts Degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Her work explores the relationship between the human body and objects of consumerism. Wong illustrates the ideas of human desire and obsession in seductively bright colour. Junk food, high heels, human body parts and organs are woven together to create images that are all at once glamorous, disturbing and strange.

ARTIST STATEMENT - Henry Hussey
The motivation behind my current works is the realisation that I am going through a transformative period as an artist. I am on the cusp of discovering an integral truth in the way I form art and believe that by pursuing this newfound focus I will strengthen my own personal voice. Within me is a hunger for knowledge in order to push myself as a creative practitioner and realise the visions that consume my thoughts. Reflecting on myself as an artist it has been an endeavour to gain a meaningful understanding of the formative moments that have shaped my life. I am resolute in challenging my emotions with depth and contemplation in the pursuit of obtaining the genuine truths that define myself. Throughout my artistic practise is a commitment to create work that is engaging and confrontational with the intention it possesses a commanding presence. The primary medium I work in is Textiles as it has enabled me to communicate my thoughts with conviction and complexity that I have yet to find in other art forms. I choose to work in fabric as it is an emotive material that has the power to encapsulate periods and cultures, which I then use to imprint my own connotations. Collaging surfaces and techniques has lead to me composing artworks on an elaborate scale that portray the events and actions consequential to myself. A significant aspect of my creative process is performing with theatre actors who act as a sounding board to evoke perceptions and reactions I would not expect. I collaborate with a number of practitioners that have the technical expertise to assist me in bringing together the visual components to realise my art. This exchange of dialogue has encouraged me to explore new disciplines and delve deeper into the core principles that define me as an artist.

ARTIST STATEMENT - Vanessa Wong
My work is interested in the relationship between human and objects in our society of consumerism. With the cultivation process of my aesthetic sense, one foot in humanistic tradition and the other in pop culture, my art reflects on the inseparable relationship between human and objects of consumerism hold-sway society. In my works, I would like to explore human desire, obsession and objectification under the illusion of symbols in the society. With popular magazine images, advertisements and packaging as well as different consuming products as references, I distill their elements into fine and details paintings in high-key colors, so they carry a sense of seductiveness, metaphoric for human desire and consuming culture. Junk food, high heels, fashion products, machine components, bodies parts and organs are the elements can be found in my works. I’m interested in finding the relationship between pop cultures with human, and the illusion create by them. Glossy glamour, disturbing violence and whimsy queerness are elements you will discover in my works.
