Wrong Stereotypes about English Department
English department students learn not only speaking but also speaking with good pronunciation. Every person can speak English but not all of them can speak English with good pronunciation. Pronunciation is very important
Reading novels and literature is a habit of English department students. Some novels and literature contain of politics, history, critics and crucial issue. It makes the student understand the other subject to increase their knowledge. In the English department, the students also learn about British and America, the politics, art, economics, history, etc. So the student knowledge not only about literature but also the others subject that are important.

PMK Celebrates Christmas Fellowship of Christian Student (PMK) Faculty of Cultural Science (FIB) celebrates Christmas day on December, 14th 2018 at 18.00-20.00 pm at room 106.
It is an annual event, but this is the most festive. Previous years, only the staff of PMk could attend the event. In 2018, it was attended by all of Christian student of FIB, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) and one of representative from each faculty in UNS.
Grace, a girl in the middle wear red shirt, celebrated Christmas with PMK Although this event is too simple and in small scope, like the other Christmas celebrating (blow candles, sing, pray, and play games), it can replace the student who cannot celebrate Christmas with their family. All of the participant were happy and were enthusiastic about enlivening the event. This is event is also to be a sign that PMK closes their service per year.
Grace, one of the participants, said, “In Christianity, celebrating Christmas is an obligation. Before in university, I always celebrate Christmas with my family. At the first I am so sad. I am alone here, but this event makes me feel like I have another family here and I can celebrate Christmas with them.”
EDEN Comeback: Experience is the Best Teacher After four years of hiatus, English Department News (EDEN) Magazine is back. Press Division of English Department Community (EDCOM), Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), had already finished the magazine at the beginning of 2019.
The production of this EDEN lasted from the end of last September until the beginning of January 2019.
On the October last year, Press Division of EDCOM 2018 had opened the submission for EDEN Magazine. The open submission was addressed to all the active English Department (ED) students of UNS.
The concept of this edition was to be place for English Department students to deliver their creativities and talents. The form of the EDEN is e-magazine. The e-magazine can be downloaded on the official website of

“We have accepted the inspiring works from the ED students. There are poetry, short story, essay, recount, illustration design, and other artworks,” said Try Kurniawati Assalam, the chief editor for EDEN.
The theme of this edition was “Experience”. This magazine served t he inspiring stories from ED students. It was all about the personal experience from the contributors which opened the readers’ mind about the challenges in life.
“The experience doesn’t necessarily have to be undergone personally but can be learned through the others as well. By this magazine, I hope that the readers will be motivated to move from the comfort zone and take the challenges,” she explained.
By the magazine, the EDCOM supervisor, Ardianna Nuraeni, encouraged the readers to see and prove that every single part of life was a real challenge.
“It is a work of compilation of English Department students, i.e. individuals who are challenging themselves to become wise individuals with all of their self-quality,” she added.
The team was already opening the submission for the upcoming EDEN by sending the works to the e-mail of Press Division, pressdivedcom@gmail.com.

PROF. NURHAENI: “FACING POLITICAL YEAR 2019” Prof. Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni delivered her lecture about “Welcoming the Indonesia Transitional Political Year 2019” on Tuesday, (1/2/2019) in Auditorium, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) at the community gathering.
Despite strengthening the brotherhood and building the hospitable environment among the academic communities of UNS, this event was also intended as a preparation to face 2019 which is full of political issues.
Nurhaeni explained about the movement from the use of mainstream media to social media, the effort to synergize the baby boomer generation with the generation X and Z, and the paradigm of development changing. All the points need to be deepened considering that Indonesia is currently in digitalization era.
Nurhaeni gives her lecture on Tuesday, (1/2/2019) in Auditorium, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) at the community gathering. (Credit photo: uns.ac.id) Considering the development of millennial generation and social media which were full of political issues, she encouraged the entire academic communities of UNS to be able to act and think based on the truth and reality.
The negative and black campaigns were the most sensitive issue while approaching the election year, she said. In 2019, people were easily judging and assuming based on subjectivity and without checking the valid data.
She continued that Indonesians nowadays were too easy to rely on the people who confidently spread the invalid issues to the society.
At the end of her lecture, she firmly urged the whole UNS academic communities to put forward “Smart Politic”, both in the society and in the campus in order to avoid the misleading political issues which could sway around UNS.
“Do not get trapped in the perceptual logic of truth which is not based on the reality, so we won’t be plunged into the miseries,” she added.

Your Limitation Can’t Limit Yourself In front of ATM center, west side of Prakoso building, we can see a unique motorcycle that is modified with a wheelchair. The motorcycle is used by a “super” man named Slamet Widodo, to sell his special iced milk tea. Milk tea is a famous Indonesian beverage. It is made by blending tea and milk together. Nowadays, it is a favorite drink around teenagers and students. In Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), we can easily find iced

his modified motorcycle.
Slamet Widodo when he was three years old, he was infected by polio virus which made his legs paralyzed. He used to do all his activities on his wheelchair. He came from Gunung Kidul, Jogjakarta. He moved to Surakarta because he wanted to get an education in YPAC (a school for disabled people). He studied there for nine years until his middle school. Unfortunately, at that time the school did not provide the high school, so his parents decided to enroll him at a public high school, SMA Negeri 5 Surakarta. His disability did not inhibit him to study at university. After graduating from high school, he entered the Special Education Department, at the Faculty of Teachers Training and Education (FKIP), UNS. He has the motivation to inspire the other disabled people to get the higher education. He said that the program study is matched well with his background and his goals. Although he is disabled, he finished his study and got the Bachelor of Education degree. On the other hand, his condition could not support his goal to be a teacher. He was forced to give up his dream because almost the school institutions that he had been applied for, could not accept him due to his disability. However, he believed that he could do something else. He wants people to be more open-minded about disabled people. Seven months ago, he opened his own business “iced milk tea”. He proves that the disabled people are independent and can produce something. His disability could not limit his desire to be productive. Every day he sells around 150 cups of iced milk tea. He said that the income from selling the milk tea had been enough to cover his family needs and pay his two children’s school tuition, Talitha Nadaa’ Jannatul Firdaus and Khoirul Azzam Nasywa Al Firdaus. His business has motivated UNS students to be an entrepreneur by reselling his products. He already has two resellers from FKIP and Faculty of Mathematics and Science (FMIPA) students. Every day they can sell 200 cups of milk tea. His business was built by the trust. He priories the resellers from UNS students because he can trust them. “When they resell my products, I allow them to take the tea first and pay to me after the tea was sold,” he said.

A lot of people love his milk tea. His customers are various from the academic community of UNS. Not only students, moreover the rector of UNS, his former teacher in the college, Ravik Karsidi, had ever bought his iced milk tea. One of his customer, Aprella, a student of UNS, said that she often bought the milk tea because of the variant flavors of the milk tea that were offered by Widodo. “So many milk tea out there, but his milk tea is different. He is the first who sells the milk tea in four different tastes; original, thai tea, choco, and green tea. It is good because I won’t get bored of them.” He tries to change the stereotype about disabled people. People should more appreciate and respect other people who have the disability. On the other hand, disabled people should be braver and confident to express and do something without any hesitation about what other people said. “This life is a mandate. God trusts us to live in this life.” he added, “Protect it. He knows what you need. So, do the best as you can and He will give you more than what you have done.”
