Welcome to the sale

The price of what we are selling is high. The price of what we are buying is higher. Profits are elusive in the cattle business and depend on doing a lot of things right. One of the key steps we can take in our quest for profits is to avoid a genetic mistake. Picking the wrong bull can set us back several years and create issues that linger even longer through unproductive retained females. How do we avoid making such a mistake? How do we give ourselves the best chance of advancing the value of both what we sell and what we retain? There is the tried and true approach of purchasing proven genetics. In this sale we are proud to offer progeny of cows that have proven, year after year, that they produce bulls that work for America’s commercial cattlemen and women. KBHR Matron of Honor F202 is our lead Simmental donor and the dam of ten of the bulls in this sale. Matron bulls have averaged over $8,500 in our January spring bull sales in Centerville, Iowa and include the 2022 sale topper of $14,000. Matron is consistently one of the top All Purpose Index purebred females in the Simmental data base and has more then proven her genomic data. You will also find three sons of our lead Angus donor, Montana Blackbird. This massive and attractive donor’s sons have averaged $7,250 in our January sales and her sons by Ashland and Enhance in this sale are standouts. We will also be selling what are likely the last of the bulls from our TJ 584 donor. 584 was the personification of elite balance in both genomic data and physical phenotype-moderate and big bodied with outstanding and balanced EPDs across the board. We offer five of her sons, including three full brothers to the $16,000 sale topper at our January, 2023 sale with Drake Simmental. In short, you will find an abundance of proven genetics in this sale of fall Angus, Simmental and SimAngus bulls.

In addition to proven pedigrees, we now have available tools that can, with much more accuracy than in the past, tell us even at young ages which bulls are most likely to become proven elite producers. Genomically enhanced EPDs use the actual genetics of the individual animal to tell us with much more accuracy how he will perform in certain traits. And now, through the work of Dr. Mahdi Saatchi, we have the RightMate genetic evaluation. I am not a geneticist, but Dr. Saatchi’s work in identifying specific genes that lead to specific outcomes (the G+ designation for bulls with genes tied to profitable production, the ACE designation for bulls specifically designed for calving ease and the ATM designation for bulls carrying the genes to add performance, pay weight and end product value) has proven astoundingly accurate in our use of the technology for the past three years. With this group of bulls we have chosen to focus on these advanced tools that tell us what is inside the bull-rather than artificially inflated and fed on weaning and yearling weights. We do so because we use these tools in our own genetic selections and are convinced they are a much more accurate way to select bulls-and help us eliminate mistakes. So you won’t see weaning and yearling weights that may or may not be reflective of the genetics the bull will pass to your calves-rather you will see genomically enhanced EPDs and RightMate evaluations-tools that truly tell us what each bull can do for you. You will let us know if this was a good idea or not.

In addition to all of our fall Angus, Simmental and SimAngus bulls, this sale also features a February 2022 Angus bull that we truly believe is something special. Iron Creek Hickok is without a doubt a genetic outlier. Sired by the $900,000 Poss Deadwood and out of the $25,000 Pine View donor GAR Sure Fire 187, Hickok, at the time of preparing this Welcome, boasted EPDs in the top 1% of the Angus breed for weaning weight, yearling weight, gain, marbling, carcass weight, $F, $W, $G, $B (249!) and $C (400!!). He is also in the top 2% for docility, 4% for milk, 10% angle, 20% ribeye area, 20% scrotal, 35% heifer pregnancy and calving ease and top 40% claw. A full sister sold at the Genetic Allies sale for $27,000 and a full brother sold at Pine View for $25,000- and neither had the genomically enhanced EPDs of Hickok. A leading edge bull that excels in pedigree, genomic data and personal performance. We were curious what Hickok could do if given the chance and he stunned us by gaining 6.02 pounds per day on a 118 day test for a 1531 pound yearling weight! And to round out this elite balance individual’s resume, he is a deep, soft and free moving bull with an excellent phenotype. We are excited for his future.

We guarantee every bull purchased in this sale to be a breeder (defined as the ability to settle healthy cows by the time the bull is 18 months of age) with the exception of:

Bull calves sold at side of dam;

Injury or disease occurring to the animal after time of sale;

• Negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser; or

• Bulls shown competitively after sale.

In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to us, at the buyer’s expense, if in good physical condition and the return is in compliance with the health requirements of the state of Iowa. We shall be entitled to a six (6) month trial period following the return in which to prove the animal is a breeder. If at the end of such six months we are unable to establish that the animal is a breeder, we will, at our option, replace the animal with another of equal value or refund the purchase price. Either option shall be deemed full satisfaction and settlement.

All of the legal jargon aside, we view the bull guarantee as a good faith neighbor’s agreement with you. We will act in good faith to determine if there was or is an issue with the bull and if there is we will make it right with you. In exchange we ask that you act in good faith as well.

Please manage the bulls with common sense-provide sufficient feed and shelter, keep in mind the bull’s age when turning him out and monitor his condition. A young bull turned out with 50 cows in a snow covered pasture eventually won’t breed cows-but it isn’t his fault. We appreciate your business and will always work with you to do what is right. Please also work with us and most importantly care for the bulls in a common sense way. Thank you.
