Welcome to the Sale...
Dear Friends and Fellow Cattlemen:
We extend a warm welcome as we approach our Annual Bull & Female Production Sale on February 25 in Burley, Idaho. We are grateful for your friendships and continued support of our program as we look forward to good things to come.
Barker Cattle Company has spent the past 40 years developing moderate-framed, easy-fleshing, low-maintenance, and calving-ease cattle. Yet, we still desire growth performance with the feed efficiency and legs to travel in our western conditions. Today’s industry pays well for heavy fat steers, but the pocketbook demands smaller cows. Our answer to this is to raise efficient cows and highperformance calves using Simmental-influenced bulls and females. We have worked hard to improve our herd with genetics capable of contributing to these performance and genetic trait goals.
We love cattle that have excellent big-spread data but also look the part phenotypically. These critical traits should not be sacrificed, and that is reflected in this year’s sale offering. We strongly believe in genetic testing to help us reach our goals and to help our customers select bulls to meet their objectives. This year’s SimAngus and Simmental bulls have been DNA tested and have GenomicEnhanced EPDs. The purebred Angus bulls have been 50K DNA tested. The bulls in the sale this year are hands down the best and deepest set straight through that we have ever assembled.
We appreciate our family, friends, and others who have helped us along the way. Be sure to check our website and social media pages where you can view our progress as well. We extend an open invitation to come and look through the bulls and females before sale day, as we know you will like what you see!
We hope to see you at the sale on February 25th, but if you are unable to attend, please know that every sale animal has been videoed and will be viewable from the website. The sale will be broadcast again this year via DVAuction. If you have any questions about this process, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Thank you again for your interest, and we look forward to visiting with you.
Sincerely,
The Barker Cattle Company Crew

Marketing Your Feeder Calves
Here at Barker Cattle Company, we want to help you increase the value of your calves. To do this, we’ve joined Allied Genetic Resources to help give our customers access to more markets. Allied Genetic Resources has established a network of over 20+ (and growing) Allied Feeding Partners that feed over 4 million head of cattle per year. These feedlots are looking for cattle that grow and hit grid specs. By purchasing Barker Cattle Company Genetics, the Allied Feeding Partners will be interested in your calves. Let us know when you plan to market your cattle and let us see what we can do to help you gain more value for your calves.
Calving Ease and Heifer Bulls
Barker Cattle Company is very serious about providing our customers with bulls possessing adequate calving ease credentials. We have learned that calving ease is not an exact science where a given mating always brings guaranteed results. We have also learned however that EPDs, blood line trends, and low birth weights can be predictive and when used collectively can greatly assist the breeder in his bull selection.
We have talked with all the breed associations we affiliate with and have asked them what their standards are to qualify a bull as a “heifer bull”. Most of the breeds will not discuss a set of standards with you. To summarize the collective answers we received, we must conclude that anything under breed average is generally considered qualifying as Calving Ease. We think most seed stock breeders are hesitant to use the “heifer bull” designation too loosely. We know we certainly are. We would strongly suggest that when EPDs are considered, a positive CE preferably in the +5 range and above is very desirable and a low BW EPD in the +2.5 range and below, even into the negative range, should be what a bull buyer looks for if calving ease is important to him/her.
Also, when selecting a calving ease bull, we suggest the birth weight ought to be in the low 80’s and preferably 80 pounds or below. Birth weight has so many causative variables that it should not be used as the sole calving ease determinate by itself. The new 50K testing serves as a great qualifier regarding calving ease and this data is given in percentiles. This data will be available on all PB Angus bulls on sale day as a supplement sheet and their HD50K enhanced test results are reflected in the catalog EPDs.

American Simmental Association Quick Reference to EPDs, Indexes and $Values
All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario.
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.
Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.
Docility (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.
Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Marbling (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days.
Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario.
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
Yield Grade (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.
Horned/Polled Status
Homo: Homozygous
Hetero: Heterozygous
Homozygous polled means this animal has no horns, an all offspring from the animal will be born without horns. Pp = Heterozygous polled means this animal does not have horns, but offspring may or may not have horns depending on their mate.
Sc=Scurs are incompletely developed horns that aren’t attached to the calf’s skull, but are visible on their skin.
If an animal has two polled genes(PP), homozygous, or one polled and one horned gene (Pp), heterozygous, it will be polled. However, if it is heterozygous polled (Pp) it may pass either the polled or horned gene on to its’ offspring. The only situation when an animal will be horned is when it possesses two recessive horned genes (pp), homozygous horned.
American Angus Association EPD Definitions
Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight EPD (BW EPD), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW EPD), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW EPD), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.
Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

Welcome to the 2025 edition of the Barker Cattle Company Production Sale. It is our pleasure to work with the Barker and Ottley families. All of us at Allied Genetic Resources are saddened to no longer have Ruel at the helm but we know that this operation is in great hands to move forward into the future and to continue his ranching legacy.
It is exciting to see the bulls and females making great strides in quality and genetic advancements over the years. This is without a doubt the strongest and deepest set of bulls and females ever offered by Barker Cattle Company. This year the bulls have all been RightChoice tested to aid in your selection decisions. The RightChoice logos uses DNA as well as EPD evaluations to evaluate the bulls for their individual traits and sorts them for their strengths in growth, maternal and calving ease. This adds an additional layer of confidence that the bull you are purchasing will meet your breeding expectations. For more information, please refer to page 4 of this catalog or reach out anyone on the Allied team.
As stated above, this is without a doubt the strongest set ever offered and with that you will see a slight change in the order of how the bulls are listed in this catalog. With larger sire groups that are more consistent in quality they are cataloged more by sire group than in the past. This will allow you as a buyer to see and compare sons out of a preferred sire more easily than in the past. So with that said we have good bulls throughout this catalog from front to back. Hopefully you agree with me that there is quality on every page of this sale book.
If you have any questions about the offering or need assistance on sale day please contact any of us on the Allied team.
Sincerely,
Angus Heifers
