It’s our pleasure to welcome you to our 29th Annual Swearngin Angus Forage Tested Bull Sale. Bull sale time is a favorite time for us as we get to see old friends and meet new ones. Our program is totally operated from a commercial prospective, if they don’t work for any reason, they are culled! Our cattle operation is 100% grass based. We haven’t flushed cows in over 10 years and we don’t buy semen on unproven popular AI sires. We search North America to find sires that meet our rigid criteria and we buy them. We have bred cattle that are proven in all segments of the cattle business over the last 50 years. They work just as well today as they always have. “What’s Your Cost to Keep a Cow?” This article in Beef Magazine, March 17, 2016, states that only 15 years ago it cost $400 per cow a year; today the cost has risen to as much as $900 per cow. That is an increase of 225% or 5.6% annually in the last 15 years. So I ask you, what is the cost of large performance, terminal (EPD) cattle? Is more really better? Ten years ago we decided things had to change or we were going to go broke following the “Terminal” cattle train. Cows out of leading AI sires weren’t staying in the herd without increased inputs and even then they had too many issues. It didn’t take long to figure out what we needed to do. One of the major turning points was when we purchased our Rito 707 son “974”. Rito 707 is a true breed leader for efficiency and muscle mass. It doesn’t hurt that he is out a very proven dam, (Donna 386) that had the pedigree and production we were looking for. 974 came home the spring of 2011 and has bred cows spring and fall for 5 years and today we will be breeding close to 100 daughters and granddaughters. We have dramatically lowered input costs and increased pounds harvested per acre. This year we were visited by a group from Argentina, that own an AI Stud, (CIIADO) that wanted to see 974 and his progeny. After touring cattle on the ranch and seeing him they wanted to bring his influence to Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil, so we made it happen. Today we are sending semen to those countries. It’s exciting to see his influence in South America now. His EPDs that we have learned are the most important from a day-to-day production standpoint is CED 11, rare to have a calving ease Rito 707 son. Dry Matter Intake -.41, top 5% of the breed, $Energy in the top 2% of the breed and $Yield Grade in the top 10% as well, meaning they are full of red meat and they do it efficiently which means pounds when you sell your calves. The bulls are managed by us every day of their lives and are available for your inspection at your convenience - just give one of us a call! We are quite fond of what Coleman Charlo brought to the table when mated with our cow herd. His dam, is the granddam of Lot 1. Bridget 762 is another one of Craig’s favorite cows, as she is a moderate, stout, huge middled female that personifies maternal excellence! Year after year she pushes power to both her sons and daughters. There are several daughters of this cow that are in the Swearngin herd, and there are certainly plans to keep more as they come available. 599 is a stout, huge footed, big boned bull that is a sale feature due to his extra ruggedness, shape and shear quality.
