We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our annual Flemington Autumn Bull & Female Sale.
We are proud to offer a commercially focussed line up of Angus and Limousin bulls from strong maternal cow lines with plenty of weight for age, structural integrity, carcase and muscle shape combined with softness and doing ability. We strive to produce cattle with extra weight and doing ability, as the main profit driver for any beef production enterprise is kg/ha. Regardless of cattle market fluctuations, cattle at the top end for weight for age generally bring the premium prices.
With cattle producers being paid on weight we think it is important to take note of raw data and actual performance rather than basing selection totally on EBV criteria. This raw data shows how animals perform in their environment and how they rank among their contemporaries in their management group.
All sale bulls will have weight, carcase scan data and scrotal measurements available prior to the sale.
Flemington has been producing Angus bulls since 2013 with most bulls previously sold by private treaty from the paddock. This is the second year we have offered bulls for auction on-farm.
The Angus offering will feature some of the first progeny of Woodhill Patent to be offered in Australia. Other sire lines include Texas Earnan L612, who was the $56,000 top priced bull from the 2017 Texas Bull Sale. Millah Murrah Paratrooper, Dunoon Prime Minister, Murdeduke Quarterback, GAR Inertia, Sydgen Enhance, JSRL Quick Fix Q29 (Texas Earnan L612 son), JSRL Pokerface P21 (Youngdale Xcalibur son), Byergo Black Magic, also have progeny represented in the sale. Our bulls offer some unique pedigrees on their maternal side with fully imported Canadian outcross genetics.
Please keep in mind, the young age of the bulls. Most of these bulls are around 18 months at sale time and not 2 until the spring. The younger 2022 “T” drop bulls offer the opportunity to secure a young bull and acclimatise to your environment prior to a small Autumn joining or a bigger Spring joining later in the year.
Once again, a feature of the sale is the inclusion of a specially selected group of 12 stud Angus females from DSK Angus (Dad & Helen). These females are backed by 35 years of breeding with the same proven maternal cow base as some of our sale bulls.
The Flemington Limousin stud was established in 1994 and is one of the longest running Limousin herds in Australia.
Our Limousin bull offering are ALL POLLED with most being homozygous polled. The sale will feature progeny of our exclusive Canadian sire, Greenwood Fernando 704F, Flemington Next Level N40, Flemington Quick Level Q40 (son of Next Level N40), Morrisvale Kept Secret and Mandayen King P57.
All the Limousin females are straight from our keeper pen, the entire offering is homozygous polled and have been AI bred to the new homozygous polled, homozygous black Canadian sire, East Coast Hector.
For the first time we will also offer a small line of purebred and crossbred show steer prospects that should suit a preparation for Royal shows or major steer shows later in the year.
All sale lots will have photos and video footage available on the Auctions Plus sale page or relevant breed society website.
If you would like to arrange an inspection, please contact Donna Robson 0428 599 544 or the Elders agents, Nick Gilvarry 0438 871 653, or Jenni O’Sullivan on 0428 222 080.
We invite you to enjoy our hospitality and take the sale day as an opportunity to catch up with fellow cattle breeders.

$A-L $
The $A-L index is similar to the $A index but is modelled on a production system where feed is surplus to requirements for the majority of the year, or the cost of supplying additional feed when animal feed requirements increase is low.
While the $A aims to maintain mature cow weight, the $A-L does not aim to limit the increase in mature cow weight as there is minimal cost incurred if the feed maintenance requirements of the female breeding herd increase as a result of selection decisions.
Higher selection indexes indicate greater profitability.

He is a super thick, heavy made bull that offers an outcross pedigree on his dam’s side.
His sire, Inertia was used here at Flemington for his great spread of figures for low birthweight and big growth while having good carcase data for EMA and IMF.
A BULL WITH A VERY APPEALING DATASET, LOW BIRTHWEIGHT, GOOD GROWTH, GREAT MATERNAL WITH AN IMF FIGURE OF 4.0.
This bull had the highest IMF and the biggest EMA in his contemporary group when scanned as a yearling, a unique combination. He is one of the heaviest bulls in the sale draft, big bodied, great skin, big nuts with a strong sirey head. His dam is emerging as one of our elite females, with a really good daughter in production and another good bull calf at foot that could be one of the pick bull calves from the 2022 spring calf drop. The first Quarterback progeny will only be hitting the market this Autumn, an opportunity to secure a son.
YOU HAVE TO ADMIRE THE EYE APPEAL THAT THIS BULL HAS. The stretch and elevation through the front end and the way he moves and gets his head up above his spine commands your attention. A heifer’s first calf (born unassisted) that stands on good substance of bone and carries a lot of thickness over his top and down through his hindquarter. Really good numbers for growth, scrotal size and IMF.
AN EXCEPTIONALLY LONG BULL WITH DEPTH, CAPACITY, GREAT EXTENSION AND ELEVATION THROUGH THE FRONT END.
Out of a first calf heifer, this bull is a low birthweight sire that is in the top 1% for EMA with a huge +15 and well above breed average for IMF.

An Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) is an estimate of the genetic merit of that animal for each trait measured. EBVs are provided for the following traits:
CALVING EASE DIRECT estimates the differences in the ability of a sire’s calves to be born unassisted from a 2-year-old heifer.
GESTATION LENGTH ranks sires for the time between conception and the birth of a calf. Shorter gestation is indicated by negative EBVs and longer by positive EBVs.
BIRTH WEIGHT indicates the genetic potential for birth weight. Positive EBVs indicate higher birth weights and negative EBVs indicate lower birth weights of progeny. 200, 400 & 600 DAY WEIGHT give us an estimation of the animal’s genetic potential for growth.
MATURE COW WEIGHT estimates differences between animals in live weights of cows at 5 years of age.
MILK a key component of fast growth to weaning is the dam’s maternal performance. A bull with a high milk EBV should produce daughters which milk well.
SCROTAL SIZE indicates whether the bull will produce sons with above average or below average scrotal sizes.
CARCASE WEIGHT ranks animals for carcase weight.
EYE MUSCLE AREA ranks animals for eye muscle area measured at the 12th rib on a 300kg carcase.
RIB FAT ranks animals for rib fat depth at the 12th rib on a 300kg carcase.
RUMP FAT ranks animals for fat depth at the p8 site on the rump on a 300kg carcase.
INTRA MUSCULAR FAT ranks animals for the percentage of intramuscular fat at the 12th rib of a 300kg carcase.
DOCILITY is expressed as the increase or decrease in the percentage of progeny that will be scored as docile (score 1 or 2). Positive EBVs indicate a higher proportion of progeny that will be scored as docile and negative EBVs indicate a lower percentage of progeny being scored as docile.
ACCURACIES Accuracies are presented with each EBV and give an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal’s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal and its relatives.
The EBVs for Limousins cannot be compared with EBVs for animal of other breeds. They should be compared with the current average EBV for the Limousin breed shown below.

A low birthweight, heifer bull prospect with a good smooth shoulder. A bull with a strong maternal pedigree whose dam is a heavy milking, consistent, productive breeder. His sire has bred extremely well for us, check out his paternal sisters later in the sale.
Firstly we must thank all the people and connections at Flemington for giving us the opportunity to participate in the 2023 sale.
The program at Flemington is always to breed cattle with a commercial focus and structural integrity with high performance and finishing ability. With the transition into the Angus program, this is still the focus.
Flemington’s management aims for quality, not quantity, with a ruthless culling program of ‘deliver or your gone’.
Our draft of 12 quality heifers has come from the power end of our cow families and selected with a balance of phenotype, breeding and industry focus. These heifers are from some of our top young matrons in the DSK herd, and we are only willing to part with them as we have so much life left in their mothers.
We were overwhelmed by the support and interest in last year’s sale heifers and the successful sale results. It was a thrill for us and a justifying record when two of these heifers went on to win blue ribbons at Sydney and Brisbane Royal Show last year for their new owners.
The joined sale heifers have been AI’d to popular sires and backed up to Knowla Surreal S9. A Karoo Realist son with exceptional length, clean shoulders, long neck, sires head and good feet. We are keen to see his calves, and in combination with the AI sires, the progeny from these heifers should make an impact.
We wish you well with your purchases and hope that these females make as much of an impact in their new herds as their mothers and grandmothers have made in our herd.
Kind regards,
Chris Knox & Helen AlexanderWe have been sourcing Canadian genetics for the past 15 years. Travelling to find suitable animals to suit our breeding criteria of maternal strength, fertility, extra frame and muscle content with the efficiency and constitution to suit our Australian conditions.
S116 will be halter broken as a show prospect and entered for Sydney if the purchaser wishes to show her. While we think this group of sale heifers are a special lot, S116 is the one that comes to the top on most inspections. A high performance female sired by our Big Tex who sired last year’s 2 sale heifers that went on to win Royal Show blue ribbons for their new owners at Sydney & Brisbane and also sired our equal top priced sale bull for us. S116 shows class with loads of capacity and volume on a very correct frame. Descends from our foundation Hot Stuff line. With the breeding potential in this young female we may regret offering her but we select heifers for this sale from our very top and we wish the successful buyer all the best in having faith in a top young Angus female.

When purchasing a bull, care and handling after the sale can be as important as the purchase itself. Looking after your bull well during the Initial stages of his working life may ensure longevity and success within your breeding herd.
When transporting your new bull insurance against loss in transit, accidental loss of use, or infertility, is sometimes provided by vendors. Where it is not, it is worth considering.
After purchase tips:
• When purchasing, ask which health treatments he has received.
Treat and handle him quietly at all times - no dogs, no buzzers. Talk to him and give him time and room to make up his mind.
• With more than one bull from different origins, you must be able to separate them on the truck.
• Make sure that the truck floor is covered to prevent bulls from slipping. Sand, sawdust or a floor grid will prevent bulls from being damaged by going down in transit.
• If you can arrange it, put a few quiet cows or steers on the truck with the bull. Let them down into a yard with the bulls for a while before loading and after unloading.
• Unload and reload during the trip as little as possible If necessary, rest with water and feed. Treat bulls kindly your impatience or nervousness is easily transmitted to an animal unfamiliar to you and unsure of his environment.
• Make sure the carrier knows which bulls can be mixed together.
Discuss with the carrier, resting procedures for long trips, expected delivery time, truck condition and quiet handling.
• Give ear tag and brand numbers to the carrier and make sure you have the carrier’s phone number.
If buying bulls from interstate, organise any necessary health tests before leaving and work out if any other requirements must be met before cattle can come into another State.
When buying bulls from far away, you may often have to fit in with other delivery arrangements to reduce cost. You should make it clear how you want your bulls handled.
When the bull or bulls arrive home, unload them at the yards into a group of house cows, steers or herd cows.
Never jump them from the back of a truck directly into a paddock—it may be the last time you see them. Bulls from different origins should be put into separate yards with other cattle for company.
Provide hay and water, then leave them alone until the next morning.
Newly purchased young bulls should not be placed with older herd bulls for multiple-sire joining. The older, dominant bull will not allow the young bulls to work, and will knock them around while keeping them away from the cows.
Use new bulls in either single-sire groups or with young bulls their own age. If a number of young bulls are to be used together, run them together for a few weeks before joining starts. They sort out their pecking order quickly and have few problems later.
When the young bulls are working, inspect them regularly and closely.
Older working bulls also need special care and attention before mating starts. They should be tested or checked every year for physical soundness, testicle tone, and serving capacity or ability.
All bulls to be used must be free-moving, active and in good condition. Working bulls may need supplementary feeding before the joining season to bring up condition.
DURING MATING
Check bulls at least twice each week for the first 2 months. Get up close to them and watch each bull walk; check for swellings around the sheath and for lameness.
• Have a spare bull or bulls available to replace any that break down. Replace any suspect bull immediately. Rotate bulls in single-sire groups to make sure that any bull infertility is covered. Single-sire joining works well but it has risks. The bulls must be checked regularly and carefully, or the bulls should be rotated every one or two cycles.
Bulls are a large investment for breeding herds and they have a major effect on herd fertility. A little time and attention to make sure they are fit, free from disease and actively working is well worthwhile.
