COWMAKER BULL SALE
WELCOME!
On behalf of American Marketing Service, welcome to the Cowmaker Bull Sale. It is a pleasure to work with this group of dedicated and progressive Angus and Brangus breeders. We will be selling 64 Angus and 21 Brangus and 7 half-bloods and Star 5 bulls from Solid Rock Ranch, Vinson Ranches, Skyhawk Brangus, Schultz Brangus and Bar X. These operations have teamed up to offer a highly complementary set of bulls with the best genetics the Angus and Brangus breeds can produce. You will find a very useful set of bulls ready to work for you. The Angus genetics behind this offering is second to none. The sires are balanced trait herd sires that are highly proven. The dams represent some of the greatest sires of our time in their pedigree, and are real world working cows that make their living on forage. The Angus bulls are well developed and powerful without being overly conditioned. They are big topped and thick with plenty of middle. Their EPDs and performance values are impeccable. You will find a high percentage of AI bred herd sire prospects, they are sired by Ellingson Chaps 4095, Buford Pathfinder C304, S A V Resource 1441, Coleman Charlo 0256, ICC Pay Raise 4886, 3F Epic 4631 and Blacktop Cash Crop. The Brangus bulls also present cutting-edge genetics and big-time performance values. You will find AI and ET herd sire prospects by Presidente, 101 Ranger, Stonewall and his sons, Mr. V8 259/7 and JDH Mr Ruben Manso 549/1 and more. They represent a world of muscle, growth and carcass in very pleasing packages. You will find calving ease prospects as well as power bulls perfect to power up your cow herd and genetically compete in the pounds game while adding carcass quality. Like their Angus counterparts they are well conditioned and ready to work. Please join us and these dedicated beef producers at the Groesbeck, Auction & Livestock Co. located 2 miles east of Groesbeck, TX. Tuesday, October 22th at 11:00 AM for our Cowmaker Bull Sale. Mark Cowan

ANGUS BULLS Welcome to the Cowmaker Bull Sale being held Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at the Groesbeck Auction and Livestock Co. Solid Rock Ranch, Vinson Ranches, Skyhawk Brangus, Schultz Cattle Co. & Bar X Brangus invite you to carefully study the Angus and Brangus bulls selling. Foundation genetics are found throughout. Whether you are looking for elite herd sires with extreme top of the breed EPDs for multiple traits, calving ease bulls to breed heifers to, balanced trait bulls or higher growth power bulls to use on cows, I think you will find bulls that fulfill those needs. Please feel free to contact the owners, the sale managers, ringmen, Radale Tiner with the American Angus Association or Wyman Poe with any questions you have and to assist you in your bull selection decisions. Internet bidding will not be available, but you may participate in the Sight Unseen Purchase Option if you are unable to attend the sale. Since 2001, Solid Rock Ranch has been focused on producing practical, functional, efficient Angus cattle that will work in the heat, humidity and relatively low quality forage environment of central Texas. While there are some bulls in this offering that are at the very top of the breed for multiple traits, the breeding program generation after generation is designed to provide balanced trait bulls to commercial and registered breeders alike that will produce those kinds of daughters for them that will excel in their herds. Calving ease, balanced EPD traits and functionality have been a consistent breeding objective in this cow herd from the start. The Angus breed has excellent carcass merit especially for marbling relative to most of the other beef breeds, so that has not received so much selection pressure that other characteristics such as adaptability, functionality, balanced performance, soundness, capacity, etc. have been compromised.
Solid Rock Ranch | Franklin, TX
Sons and grandsons of proven Cowmaker sires like Ellingson Chaps 4095, Buford Pathfinder C304, S A V Resource 1441, Coleman Charlo 0256, ICC Pay Raise 4886, 3F Epic 4631, Blacktop Cash Crop, Basin Payweight 1682, Connealy Thunder, S A V Final Answer 0035 & V D A R Really Windy 4097 sell. Study the pedigrees closely, they are stacked with bulls designed to produce productive, big bodied females that will thrive on forage. The identification system here is a cow family numbering system with the family number first, a year letter code next and then the order they were born within that family in that year. For example, 335F would be the first animal born in the 335 family in 2018, 335F2 the 2nd, etc. The lots are arranged in brand order so the best lots are not necessarily the first few lots in the catalog. All the Angus bulls selling are free either by pedigree or DNA test of the recessive genetic defects AM, NH, CA & DD. Angus EPDs and rankings are as of 9/6/19. Angus EPDs are genomic-enhanced (GE-EPDs). Bulls were tested with the Zoetis HD50K high density marker profile. Thanks for all the buyers in previous sales and those customers that have invested in Solid Rock Ranch genetics through the years either through private treaty sales or other sales. We think you will find Angus & Brangus bulls in this offering that will benefit your breeding programs. We look forward to seeing you in Groesbeck on Tuesday, October 22, 2019. Matt Jones

BRANGUS BULLS
Solid Rock Ranch | Franklin, Texas Vinson Ranches | Ovalo, Texas Skyhawk Brangus | Tyler, Texas Schultz Cattle Co. | New Baden, Texas Bar X Brangus | Detroit, Texas
We will again offer a select set of Brangus bulls this year in the Cowmaker Bull Sale. We feel these bulls are highly complementary to the Angus bulls offered. They are from a diverse group of friends and Brangus breeders who share a similar breeding philosophy. It would be challenging to find a set of Brangus bulls with more real world performance and carcass, in a more balanced EPD tabulation than the bulls representing these consignors. Please note the number of bulls that records 7, 8, 9 and more EPD traits ranking in the Brangus breed’s top 35% or greater. That is the balance we feel is irreplaceable in the pasture. You will find AI and ET herd sire prospects, including sons and grandsons of some of the most proven bulls in the breed. There are sons and grandsons of Stonewall of RRR 222W6, 101 Ranger 99W11, Skyhawks Presidente and more. They represent a world of muscle, growth and carcass in very pleasing and numerically balanced packages. Like their Angus counterparts they are well conditioned and ready to work. We are thankful for a quality set of bulls being offered by longtime fellow Texas breeders: Lanny Vinson with Vinson Ranches, Russ Williamson with Skyhawk Brangus, Charles & Steve Schultz with Schultz Cattle Company & the Cowan family with Bar X Brangus. They have all been in the cattle business and raising Brangus cattle for many years and are diligent in their breeding programs and careful in their mating decisions. This year we are also offering six half-blood Brangus bulls sired by Brahman sires Mr. V8 259/7 and JDH Mr Ruben Manso 549/1. Dams were selected from the top moderate birthweight cows in the Solid Rock Ranch herd. Heifer mates are in a breeding up program to introduce new genetics to the herd and to the Brangus breed. These half-blood bulls have a lot of mating flexibility, whether they are used on half-blood cows to maintain Brahman influence or on higher percentage English or Continental cows to add a little more ear. They are registered with IBBA and calves out of registered Angus cows are eligible for registration as one-quarter bloods. Subsequent mating to a half-blood will result in first generation registered three-eighths blood Brangus. EPDs for many of the three-eighths blood and all the half-blood bulls incorporate their GeneSeek 50K genomic data for increased accuracy to help you make more informed and confident selection decisions. They will be designated with a double helix DNA symbol above the REA EPD. We think you could drive the wheels off your truck and not find a superior set of real-world herd sire prospects than the Brangus bulls offered in the Cowmaker Bull Sale. They have a lot to offer.
Using EPDs for Selection
Cattle Evaluations use the term Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) to express genetic transmitting ability of a sire for the various traits listed. An EPD is a prediction of how future progeny of a sire are expected to perform in a particular trait relative to other sires in the analysis. The key word is “difference”. The EPD itself does not imply “good” or “bad” performance. But rather, the EPD gives a prediction of the average difference to expect in the performance of a sire’s progeny relative to other sires in the same analysis. The EPD for a given trait on each animal in the analysis is compared to every other animal in the analysis. The EPD is reported as a plus or minus value in the unit which the trait is measured. Each EPD reported is accompanied with an Accuracy (ACC) value. ACC is a measure of reliability regarding the EPD evaluation for a performance trait. Accuracy is reported as a decimal number between zero and one: large values indicate greater accuracy and more certainty the EPD will show little change as additional progeny information is obtained.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first–calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction, and the EPD is reported in percentage units. Stayability (STAY), Predicts the likelihood an animal’s daughters will still be in the herd at six years old versus the average of the breed.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births Actual Birth Weight (Act Wt), Is the actual with a higher value indicating greater calving birth weight. EPDs for CED or BW are better in- ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the dicators of calf birth weights than actual birth average ease with which a sire’s daughters weight of the sire. will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a with a higher value indicating greater calving sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ease in firstcalf heifers. It predicts the average ability as expressed in his daughters compared difference in ease with which a sire’s calves to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is will be born when he is bred to first-calf that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed heifers. to milk and mothering ability. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
2222
Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Cowmaker BullSale Sale Cowmaker Bull
Intramuscular Fat (IMF), Percent intramuscular fat is highly correlated to the USDA marbling score. Expressed as a difference in percent IMF of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fertility Index | The IBBA fertility index includes considerations for Heifer Pregnancy (HP), Stayability (STAY), Cow Weight (CowWt), Age at First Calving (AFC) and ultrasound Scan Fat (SFat). As one would expect, the index value goes up as HP and STAY increase. Conversely, the index value goes down as CowWt and AFC increase. The fertility index is structured so that if you select bulls with high index values, your mature cow weights should not increase, but your weaning weights and yearling weights would increase. In other words, you will tend to select earlier maturing cattle with rapid early growth. The heifers will reach puberty sooner and at a lower weight, and are expected to be fertile and stay in the herd longer. Terminal Index | The Terminal Index is very straightforward. The most impactful trait is yearling weight, followed by weaning weight and IMF (i.e. marbling). If one selects aggressively using the Terminal Index, it will tend to push cow weights higher over time. Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis.

HALF-BLOOD BULLS: MAXIMIZERS In the spring of 2017, Solid Rock Ranch set aside a select group of top-end, moderate birthweight, proven cows as a base for a new genetics Brangus program to complement the existing Brangus genetics in the herd and in the breed. After careful study and consultation, we selected two Brahman sires to use that first breeding season: Mr. V8 259/7 and JDH Mr Ruben Manso 549/1. This first cross produced the six half-blood Brangus bulls being offered here and three heifer mates being retained to produce the next generation. Four of the bulls are AI sired and two are the result of ET out of Ms S Rock Glory 335R9. She is a full sister to Ms S Rock Glory 335R8 who has been a donor in the Angus program and leaves quite a legacy. 335R9 was chosen because she was more moderate and had a more moderate birth weight and is extremely fertile with 7 of her first 9 calves being the result of AI with an average 369 day calving interval. We call these half-blood bulls “Maximizers” because of the advantage in heterosis they can provide and the ability to add or maintain some ear in those herds looking for that. The bulls themselves should also have an advantage in adaptability when used in more extreme hot &/or humid environments. Their calves out of registered Angus or Brahman cows are eligible for registry with IBBA as one-quarter or three-quarter bloods respectively. Their EPDs do incorporate their GeneSeek 50K genomic data for increased accuracy to help you make more informed and confident selection decisions.

The dam is a moderate Santa Gertrudis cow purchased from Briggs Ranches who produced one of their best heifer calves in the sale the year she sold. He should breed similar to many of the Brangus bulls but with some added advantage for heterosis when used on higher percentage Brangus or Angus females. Sale Terms & Conditions Bidding Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder without reserve. The auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids and his decision on such matters shall be final.
Terms
Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold, but it shall be the obligation of the seller to see that animals are fed and cared for until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of 48 hours after the sale, whichever occurs sooner. After 48 hours a maintenance fee of $5.00 per day will be assessed until pickup, unless AMS arranges shipment.
Certificate of Registry
A transferred certificate of registry will be furnished to the purchaser for each registered bull or registered female once proper settlement has been made.
Retained Interest
Seller is retaining 1/3 semen interest on all registered Angus bulls unless otherwise noted. Buyer has full possession and full salvage value. In the event the seller wishes to collect semen, buyer may participate in the collection and share expenses or seller will own the whole collection at seller’s expense. Collection will be at the buyer’s convenience.
Health
Health papers suitable for interstate shipment will be furnished on all animals.
Announcements
Any changes from the information of any kind in this catalog will be provided in a sale day supplement sheet or announced from the auction block and such information shall take precedence over cataloged information.
Breeding Guarantee
1. All animals are guaranteed to be breeders with the exception of: a) calves under 12 months of age; b) animals shown by purchaser after sale in which the guarantee (if any) shall be between the seller and the buyer; c) injury or disease occurring after the sale; d) gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser; e) death by any reason. 2. Any bull which settles cows by natural service and passes a fertility test made by competent veterinarians, mutually agreed upon by the buyer and seller, during any six month period of trial (provided for in paragraph 2 of the section of these sales terms and conditions entitled “Options and Privileges of Return or Adjustment”) shall be considered a breeder.
Options and Privileges of Return or Adjustment
1. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing within six months of the sale date. 2. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to the seller if in good condition and complying with the health requirements of Texas. The seller shall be entitled to a six month trial following the return of the animal in which to prove that the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six months the seller is unable to prove the animal is a breeder, the seller shall at the option of the buyer replace the animal with another of equal value or issue a credit for the initial selling price. If the seller proves the animal to be a breeder, it shall be the obligation of the purchaser to take delivery of the animal and pay all expenses incurred for transportation. 3. If a bull is sold and at a later date proves not to be eligible for registration under association rules, the seller shall be obligated to make a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price to the buyer, refund the purchase price or issue a credit for the initial selling price upon the return of the animal to the farm of the seller. 4. If an animal is sold and through DNA is proven to have incorrect parentage as represented by the certificate of registration, and for which the parentage can be determined, the seller shall be obligated to make a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price to the buyer, refund the purchase price or issue a credit for the initial selling price upon the return of the animal to the farm of the seller.
Rights and Obligations
1. The above terms and conditions of sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal and shall be equally binding on both. Other than the guarantees and warranties stated above, no other warranties or guarantees are expressed or implied. Each sale or resale of an animal constitutes a separate transaction. 2. American Marketing Service or any other person connected with the management of the sale assumes no liability, legal or otherwise.
