CLEAVER MEMBERS
Cleaver Kids introduces youth ages 6-8 to 4-H Alberta
Cleavers develop new friendships, a sense of belonging to the club and their community, listening skills, the ability to express themselves, set goals, track progress and celebrate their achievements!
The Eagle Beef and Multi Club has 13 eager Cleaver members this year who are all excitedly waiting to become full fledged 4-H members in the next few years. The Cleavers have spent time during meetings this year building teamwork skills, developing communication skills and learning about what 4-H has to offer. We have four members showing calendar year calves and eight members showing lambs at this year's Achievement Day. Three of our Cleavers have been participating in Small Engines activities and five have been part of the Outdoor Project adventures this year.
The Outdoor Project had eight Junior members and five Cleavers this year. The focus of the year was learning risk management strategies and putting safety plans in place while performing outdoor adventures. The group had several adventures together including rock climbing, kayaking, outdoor skating, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, hiking, and mountain biking. Some of the risk management strategies that were implemented include various equipment, training, group adventure planning, and communication. Our Outdoor Project Achievement Day is tentatively scheduled for June 16 (weather dependent) where we will bring all of these skills and risk management planning together.
EQUINE PROJECT
The gals in the Equine Project have had another great year. Our six members this year were full of enthusiasm and were keen to be spending time on their horses. We have riders in Level 1, 2 and our oldest member in Level 3, using a young horse she started herself. We are thankful to have Sandy Loree back again as our riding coach as he shares his wealth of knowledge about everything to do with the horse and rider. This year we kicked the year off with a gymkhana with a neighboring club, spent lots of time riding at the Calouri Pavilion in Olds with Sandy, spent a day at the Horse Expo, learned about parasites, complete with microscopes and our own horse poop in a lab at Olds College, and had a clinic focusing on balanced riding. We always have fun putting our new skills into practice through different events such as gymkhana, show classes, various games and this year, a musical ride We will be performing our musical ride as well as competing in the Mountain View District 4-H Show as our Achievement Day on May 11th and 12th at the Olds Megadome The girls look forward to wrapping their year up with a trail ride and weiner roast
SMALL ENGINES PROJECT
The Small Engines Project had a fantastic year with a ton of awesome projects. We were able to use the shop at Olds College, giving us access to a ton of tools, manuals, and a large space. With 13 members, having this space was great. All members secured their own project equipment to work on through the year. We had quite the variety! Members worked on an antique stationary engine, a chainsaw, several lawnmower and rototiller engines, as well as a garden tractor and a moped. The technical and personal growth in this group was outstanding this year. The ability to now identify most engine parts, perform basic troubleshooting and teamwork are all but a few important skills gained this year. We are excited to have a display at this year’s club Achievement Day and can’t wait to show off the members work. Members represented three age groups of the club, Junior, Intermediate and Senior. Many members have taken a keen interest in mechanics and it will be very exciting to see how this progresses over the coming years.
