WELCOME TO OUR SALE

Welcome to the LaBatte Simmentals 45th Annual Spring Bull and Female Sale, Friday, February 28th, 2025 at Johnstone Auction Mart, 4 miles west of Moose Jaw on #1 highway, big orange building on north side of the road. How time flies, just seems a short while ago I was writing footnotes for our 44th Bull Sale.

We would like to thank again all the bidders and buyers from our past sales, your continued support and effort to attend our sales or bid online is very much appreciated. Some of you becoming life long friends. Kyron and I both think this years edition of our bulls is one of the best ever whether you are looking for black, red or fullblood bulls.

I would also like to thank our family back home and our hired help. They are a huge part of any success that we’ve had in the past. My wife Brenda, for raising two great kids, staying alone many nights when I was on the road and keeping me in line… LOL! To our son Lynlee and his family for being a big part in the farming end and cattle business. Lynlee’s wife Hayley is a big asset to our Simmental operation as she’s there whenever you need her and getting more involved all the time. Brodyn is home full time now and his interest and help make Grandpa happy. The other two boys helping out when needed. Janalee and Tim’s three daughter’s now own a cow at our place and who knows they might be Simmental breeders down the road. Our help Cole McHattie who has been here almost three years, Dale Ehrhardt our trusted night watch man who’s been helping us for many years and Chase Muxlow helps mostly on the grain side but also with the purebreds when needed. Great help! Thank you to our family and help over the many years as this is our 45th consecutive bull and female sale.

We truly believe this is our best offering of the 45 years. From fullbloods featuring the first calf crop from the outstanding JNR Barbarian bull, old reliable Sunny Valley Canon, our homo polled, time proven bull. Our red bulls headed by the first calf crop of Deeg El Dorado, outstanding set of bulls by him. Also the popular WFL Mountain View bull who makes them dark red, soggy and hairy and of course the popular WLB Top Tier bull, whose calving ease, with performance, style and throw’s some demanded baldies. He’s one of the best bulls we’ve ever used and will continue to use. The blacks are headed by the popular RF Caliber bull who needs no introduction to the Simmental breed. We have a few IPU 30-06 sons in the sale as he was our high selling black Caliber son sold in our 2023 sale, and new this year are some powerful half blood and ¾ blood RF Bloodline sons. Bloodline is a half blood bull who we considered one of the best bulls to also sell in 2023. Our bull offering is consistent and a set we are really proud of.

We invite you to our 45th Annual Bull and Female Sale on Friday, February 28 at Johnstone Auction Mart, Moose Jaw, SK, where approximately 80 plus bulls and a dozen open purebred heifers will sell. The sale is a live auction where the bulls will be going through the ring. The sale is also carried on DLMS (Mark Shologan at 780-699-5082) if you are unable to attend. The bulls will be available for viewing Wednesday & Thursday and of course Friday, February 28 at Johnstone’s. Even better yet, come to our farm and see the bulls and heifers prior to the sale. The coffee is always on! If you have any questions call Barry at 306-815-7900 or Brodyn at 306-815-7804 or Kyron Manske at 306-267-7530 or call our sale managers, Bohrson Marketing sale staff to evaluate the offering for you. Please join us Thursday night in the hospitality room at the Ramada Hotel for beverages, snacks and socializing!

P.S. What a great time to be in the cattle business. I never thought I would see $3,000 steer calves in the late fall, $5-6,000 bred commercial heifers and $5-6,000 cull bull prices. I think these prices are here for a few years with the cattle numbers so low in Canada and the U.S. I commend the great cattlemen and cattlewomen for hanging in there for many years when prices were low and are reaping from their hard work and dedication now!

P.S. Grandkids are growing up way too fast. As two have graduated, two more will graduate this year and our youngest is 14. We are looking to adopt some young grandkids if anybody is interested! LOL! They are the best!

For 45 consecutive years, Barry LaBatte and family have been supplying top commercial and purebred cattleman alike all across North America with some of the finest Simmental genetics in the world. Their unwavering dedication to the breed and the industry has propelled them to one of the true household names in the Simmental breed and the cattle business in general. We are proud to work along side the LaBatte family marketing their cattle for this special sale and wish to invite one and all to join us on February 28th!

The LaBatte Fullblood bulls are a sight to beheld and are arguably the deepest set in quality they have assembled. The highly anticipated calf crop from the $165,000 Barbarian has blown past his big expectations and we just know your going to appreciate the depth, dimension and colour they offer. They perfectly compliment the tried, tested and trued Canon sons as well as a few other sons by Adonis, Honkey Tonk and Houston.

The Red bulls this year are a dark, thick, attractive set that feature the first sons to sell by the $110,000 El Dorado as well as another stout set of sons by Mountain View, Potent, Walk The Line and of course the popular Top Tier. You will be blown away with how consistent this set of red bulls from LaBatte is no matter the sire group they fall in.

2025 offers an exciting set of black bulls carrying the IPU prefix. Another impressive and large sire group of the breed leading Caliber lead the charge with a good offering of RF Bloodline bulls that are sure to appease to even the most discriminating cattle people. The Black bulls in general have frame and power with a tonne of performance.

Kyron, Kelsey and the girls of East Poplar Simmentals have brought us their most consistent and diverse offering to date for this 2025 sale. Black Bulls, Red Bulls, percentage bulls, calving ease bulls, performance bulls, white faced bulls, they will have the options in spades for you on February 28th. These bulls have been responsibly developed and are built to last and work in any environment they are turned into. The Manske family has a great working cowherd with a heavy emphasis on foot and udder quality and we feel you can buy with the utmost amount of confidence that your East Poplar bull will be backed by a productive and very functional female. They annually source some of the best females to build around and sires to utilize and we feel this set of sale bulls is very evident of that.

As always, their are a dozen of high quality, top end papered replacement females from the LaBatte program on offer. These exciting females are sisters to the bulls and give you a great look into what the maternal side of their sire groups have to offer. These are cornerstone type females that are your chance to add an IPU into your program and breed and utilize as you see fit.

We do hope you make plans to join us on February 28th, 2025 near Moose Jaw at Johnstones sale barn. The sale cattle, people and hospitality are an absolute favourite of ours on the spring sale run. Barbarian is a powerhouse! Oberle Farms and ourselves purchased him at JNR Farms bull sale for a whopping $165,000. One of the best investments we’ve ever made. Barbarian himself weaned off his powerful dam at 1128 lbs and didn’t’ slow down from there. At sale time in early February he was over 1700 lbs and measured 43 cm scrotal. He is dark red colored and great haired. Barbarian is a rare individual as seen by his first sons and daughters. Couldn’t be more happy and proud of this powerful 100% Full Fleckvieh, as you will see by his sons on offer.

A true sale feature here, IPU 3H Barbarian 4M, what a stud! Like his sire, powerful, deep, soggy, very attractive and has a great rear quarter that carries right down deep. We purchased his mother out of Simmsational from Peter Sweeten. What a buy she has been. She’s homo polled and great uddered and can produce. Her first calf, a homo polled, POL Forward daughter sold through our 2023 bull sale to Robb Farms for $17,000. Her next calf, a heifer calf by Starwest Pol Havec was retained in our herd, calved in early January. She is just like her mother and really nice uddered also. And her third calf is the mighty IPU Barbarian 4M. This year she has a polled Madano daughter on her. All have been calved in January and all outstanding individuals. We are very proud to have raised this exceptional bull and we feel there’s a lot of opportunity in this powerful polled bull.

A dark cherry red attractive, moderate Barbarian son out of a beautiful Houston cow going back to the great Precious Thing 402T cow. We sold ½ interest in 350M’s mother in the 2022 Simmsational Sale for a great price of $43,000. She was so good and an own daughter of Precious Thing 402T that we couldn’t let all of her go. First time we’ve ever done that, that’s’ how high we were on her and an own daughter of the great PRL Houston 005H bull. She was purchased by Bohrson Marketing and Wilson Stock Farms, great partners. 350M is moderate framed with loads of middle, depth and capacity. What a set of females he would sire with Houston and 402T in their pedigree.

TWIN TO 113M

A really stylish, correct, well made Canon son out of a really good Adonis 96Z female. These Adonis females are really good producers. In my opinion 96Z is the best fullblood bull that ever been registered in the Canadian Simmental Association. He sires both great bulls and heifers. If you see a great bull he usually has Adonis 96Z in his pedigree some place. This 112M bull as that herd bull look., dark red and attractive. He also has a great set of EPD’s. He’s above average in 11 of the 13 traits.

POLLED/NON DILUTER

TWIN TO 112M

113M is a twin brother to 112M. He’s not as dark as 112M but is super long bodied, polled, moves very well and similar to his brother.

IPU 153G CANON 156M

DILUTER

This young stud is out of one of our favorite cows. Her daughters, a first calf Walker daughter, with a beautiful udder that just calved mid January, spitting image of her mother. This 156M bull is very good, thick, deep, great quarter and is smooth polled. He would sire a great set of calves whether purebred or commercial. Would have to put him on a set of Hereford cows and raise those valuable half bloods.

POLLED/DILUTER

An end of February Canon son that’s really good for his age. He’s dark cherry red, has goggles, great hair, very long made, is deep and full of meat and big topped. He carries the diluter gene, the only one of our fullbloods. This means if bred to black cows you could possibly get a grey calf, small percentage. If bred to Herefords, red Angus or red Simmental there would be no greys. This is a very good bull and he’ll sire the right kind. Big rugged steer calves and fancy, easy doing replacement heifers.

IPU Precious 402T ADONIS 169M

Well what a pair of Adonis 96Z sons out of the Precious Thing 402T cow. Truly sale features. I love this pair of bulls. All summer and fall I would change my mind which one I liked best. They are both dark red, thick and soggy. They’ve got great capacity, excellent hair and structurally sound. This is the last chance to buy any progeny off of Precious Thing 402T as she is long gone and we have no more embryos on her. 402T was the soggiest, most massive fullblood cow that ever walked our pasture’s. These two Adonis sons were supposed to be heifers but no such luck. These two bulls are herdsires!

If you like them cherry red, hairy, thick, big topped, big nutted and just plain good. 163M checks all the boxes. Been one of my favorites all a long. His mother is a very easy fleshing cow with a really good udder, a Top Tier female. In the 2021 New Years Resolution sale we sold the pick of our heifer calves and 55J is probably the heifer I would have picked. Her mother is the gorgeous dam of IPU Lieutenant 24E, so there is power in the blood in this bull. He too has an excellent set of EPD’s being above average in 12/13 traits. Homo Polled and homo great!

When we started in the red and black purebreds we bought a few black Fleck cross cows and they were some of the best producers we ever had. This bull was born on a very cold January night and lost a bit of the end of his ears but wouldn’t throw that in his progeny. We couldn’t be happier with the Top Tier progeny. He’s done a great job of adding calving ease, blaze face and quality in the calf crops, both Bulls and Heifers. We’re having our 5th year of Top Tier calves this spring and will continue to use him in the future. He calves great, but also adds shape and muscle to his calves. His daughters are now in production and we are very happy with them, udder quality is very good. In our last three years, his bulls were readily accepted by both the purebred and commercial man. We think the Top Tier progeny in this years sale is the best yet.

HETERO POLLED

Here’s the start of our calving ease Top Tier bulls that are so well accepted in the purebred and commercial market. 44M is from a really good Potent daughter, who we rate as one of our best first calvers from last year and she is out of WLB Encore bull that worked so well for us going back to the 24C cow family. This guy has a beautiful blaze face, very smooth made, deep quartered, an 76 lbs birther weight and style to burn. Give your heifers a treat and breed them to Top Tier 44M.

IPU 40K TOP TIER 44M

IPU 4K TOP TIER 93M

HOMO POLLED

Another feature Top Tier son going back to a good Black Gold Approval daughter. She’s a really good young cow and had her second calf mid January, a Mountain View bull calf. 93M is in the 4% for calving ease and top 15% for birthweight EPD and a 80 lbs birthweight himself. He’s not just a calving ease bull, he’s a really good bull too. He’s deep and thick, lots of capacity, great haircoat again, a calving ease bull you would be proud of.

HOMO POLLED

Again one of our favorites, out of a good Potent daughter out of the Nattallia cow family. Love the look and smoothness of this bull, so deep bodied, carries his quarter right down, dark colored, beautiful baldy face, just so attractive and has that herd bull look to him. He has a real good set of EPD’s also, very balanced. He’s in the top 5% for calving ease, top 20% for birth weight and top 25% for weaning weight. He would be an ideal candidate to run with your heifers or second calvers.

The last Top Tier bull in this years offering. He too has a little blaze, is really smooth made, enough quarter and nice fronted. Over all WLB Top Tier 456G might be the best herdbull we ever purchased. He has done it all for us from calving ease, to his daughters turning out excellent and his bulls very marketable. I believe this 187M bull is a sure bet heifer bull. You be the judge of which of these Top Tier sons you like the best!

HOMO POLLED/HOMO BLACK

A definite feature bull! If you are looking for added size, performance and style look no further. He was our heaviest weaning bull at 1015 lbs and as I said before on a very dry year. He ranked #1 in his contempary group for weaning weight. His EPD profile he’s ranked at the top 4% of the breed for weaning weight and top 3% for yearling weight and top 3% for carcass weight. He’s long, very smooth made, got muscle and capacity and very nice fronted and stylish. At R Plus’s dispersal the best sire group of open heifers were sired by Prosecution in our opinion. This 42M bull will sire some performance, size and style in his offspring. His heifers will be outstanding and his bull calves will be growthy, have capacity and style. Homo polled and homo black as an added bonus. Another bull we will try to get semen collected on.

RF CALIBER 014G

RF Caliber has done it all for us. He’s probably one of the best black bulls in the Simmental breed, that there has ever been! His sons continue to top sales, his females are beautiful uddered and produce. He adds size, definitely hair, capacity, thickness, performance, structure and style. He’s one of those once in a lifetime bulls.

A feature Caliber son that is very very good and a baldy to boot. He’s powerful, big topped and has a great quarter carrying deep down in his bottom third. He’s long and hairy too. If it works out were going to draw a little semen off him for our own herd. His mother was Brodyn’s 4-H heifer and he showed her as a two year old pair in 4-H also. They won many Champion banners in those two years. She herself has a great disposition and passes this onto her progeny. She has a beautiful two year old daughter (another baldy) a full sister to 94M, that calved mid January, has a great udder and she herself is very easy fleshing. An outstanding pedigree with Caliber, IPU Bentley 81F and Springcreek Liner 56U. He’s solid black only a blaze on his head and a 86 lbs birthweight. He’s homo polled, homo black and homo good. Lots of opportunity here as he has herd bull written all over him. Owned by Brodyn and Barry

HOMO POLLED/HOMO BLACK

Another really good Caliber son out of a heifer Brodyn and I purchased out of the Agribition Sale in 2019 from Czech-Mate Livestock that’s a daughter of their CMS Soda Pop 412B cow. She’s done very well for us as a her first calf was a heifer that is retained in our herd, her second and third calves were black and both sold through our bull sale, one to Rodney Johnson, Oungre, SK and in last years sale a Black Cinch son selling to Brady Olson and now this good Caliber son. 86M is smooth made, deep ribbed, thick, has a beautiful haircoat, big testicles, really nice made through his front and a real nice head. He’s really attractive and stylish. His EPD’s are highlighted by calving ease numbers and with that great performance numbers! Again homo polled and homo black.

She also raised a really good Yuma daughter that sold to X-T in the 2022 Simmsational Sale. 2M’s mother has been a really good cow for us. 2M has lots of quarter, big topped, smooth made, just like his brothers. Another good Caliber son out of the Black Satin 680S cow family that we purchased out of the D Bar C Dispersal some years ago. She had a picture perfect udder still at an old age when we sold her. A good son of her daughter, Black Satin 128F, the mother of this bull, produced a herdsire for Prairie Wind Farms at Estevan, the Mack Family. We have a full sister to 162M in our herd. This bull is moderate framed, good quarter and one of the best haired bulls in the pen. The kind the feedlot operators like.

HOMO POLLED/HOMO BLACK

A nice mating here of a Dynasty young cow going back to the Sugar cow family of Mader Ranches where we purchased her as one of the high selling bred heifers in their fall female sale. This 182M is also very smooth made, good middled and quartered. He’s got a beautiful small head, very clean fronted and would sire some excellent replacement heifers, the kind that top the market.

HOMO POLLED/HOMO BLACK PERCENTAGE

We purchased RF Bloodline 242K, along with Oberle Farms in the Maxwell-Rancier 2023 Bull Sale. We started working on a small half blood program and this stud came along, we thought maybe as good a black bull that sold in the 2023 bull season. He was so impressive with his muscle, rib shape and overall balance. He had an actual weaning weights of 1105 lbs and a 1600 lbs yearling weight and yes he was a half blood sired by the $250,000 SAV Bloodline Angus bull out of a beautiful cow, the Flirt cow family. He cost us $50,000 but it was worth every penny of it as you will see with his sons, ½ bloods and ¾ bloods. Probably haven’t used a more consistent herd bull then Bloodline. He puts a little extra frame in them lots of muscle, rib and eye appeal. A true performance bull. We think you will be impressed.

IPU 8G BLOODLINE 160M 61

HOMO POLLED/HOMO

These Bloodline bulls are like peas in a pod. So uniform in type and quality. This 160M is what we call a true half blood – a ½ blood mated to a half blood. We think you will get more consistency in type and kind that way. The dam and granddam of the bull are pretty special. We bought the dam out of the Sunrise dispersal, along with her full sister, both Denali’s out of a gorgeous purebred Hamilton Angus cow, HF Tibbie 93U cow. This is an outstanding bull that’s smooth made, deep ribbed, great quarter and sharp fronted. He’s homo polled, homo black and homo good. What a set of calves he would sire.

HOMO POLLED/HOMO BLACK

Here’s a very attractive Bloodline bull that is a ¾ blood. With our new bylaw, we now can breed a ¾ blood bull to a 15/16 or higher percentage female and it would be considered a purebred as 7/8’s in both male and females are considered purebreds. We ourselves purchased a ¾ blood bull last spring and bred purebred cows to him. 99% of our cows would be 15/16 Simmental blood or way higher. This 29M bull is really nice made, really thick, deep ribbed, great haired and attractive. His mother is a really good Uppercut cow going back to the Tula 19B cow family.

BLOODLINE 91M

Another feature Bloodline bull. Love this guys mother, a real deep ribbed black IPU Lieutenant 24E daughter with an excellent udder. 91M is really thick made, deep quartered, just plain super stout, nice haired and very attractive. This is the kind we are trying to raise for our purebred and commercial customers alike. They should be the same to produce excellent male and females who will turn into good bulls or steers and have offspring that will turn into good producing cows. 91M has a nice moderate birthweight of 86 lbs also.

HOMO POLLED/HOMO BLACK

Here’s a Bloodline son that has an exceptional mother, IPU Smooth As Charm 22E. One of my favorite cows on the place. She’s sired by an Angus bull and has a Captain Morgan mother. She’s deep ribbed, great uddered, very angular, just a front pasture cow. This is her fourth bull in a row selling in Moose Jaw. Two to Brian & Paige Uran, ND and one to Allemand Ranches at Shaunavon, SK. And her fourth, this Bloodline son, might be her best yet. Nice 84 lbs birth weight, really stout, lots of capacity and a great set of EPD’s from calving to performance to milk and marbling, way above average in 11 of the 13 traits. All in a very attractive package. I would keep every daughter I could off of this bull.

HOMO POLLED/HOMO BLACK

Well talking about mother cows, this again is one of my favorites, big time half blood cow. She was our pick of the black cows at the Springcreek dispersal. Beautiful udder, pear shaped, easy doing and she’s a producer. Her Bloodline bull calf, March born, is a standout. He’s so thick and soggy, huge quarter and carries down in his bottom third, big topped, just a herdbull in the making. He was the number one bull for adjusted weaning weight at 977 lbs. His EPD weaning weight is in the top 5% of the breed and yearling EPPD is in the top 15%, marbling top 3%, API top 35% and TI top 4%. In last years sale her good Estate bull calf sold in our sale to Steve Graveley, MT, same type of bull. If you want to raise some pounds, thick correct cattle and excellent replacements this could be the one. He is a commercial man’s or woman’s dream kind of bull.

The last of our Bloodline bulls and he’s another true half blood bull. His mother was a big old Final Answer cow that unfortunately got hurt this spring and we had to sell her this fall. It affected her calf’s performance a little as she wasn’t able to get around very well and didn’t milk as good as usual. 23A’s pedigree was very maternal being a Final Answer out of a Springcreek Liner 56U.

Two very maternal bulls in this breed. 43M is still a very good bull, smooth made, deep bodied and long. You will want to keep his daughters for sure.

A true sale feature, this thick, soggy IPU 30-06 47K son has been s standout all along. Mothered by the same dam as our high seller last year, a Caliber son selling to Mandan Lake Simmental, ND, for $57,000. This 63M bull is a ¾ brother to him. 30-06 was our high selling bull in our 2023 bull sale selling for $65,000 to Crossroad Farms at Shell Lake, SK. We had several people tell us he was in the top two caliber sons to sell that year. We got a little semen off him and we were very pleased with these three bulls that are in the sale and also a fancy good heifer calf in the sale too. 63M’s mother is quite a cow, she was our pick of the black cows out of the WLB dispersal, she’s a big powerful cow, excellent udder, beautiful fronted, so broody and angular. She will enter our donor program this year. This is a herd bull, make sure you look him up sale day, he is a performance bull, a bull you would be very proud to own.

Box 456 Coronach, SK S0H 0Z0 east.poplar@hotmail.com 306-267-7530

www.eastpoplarsimmentals.com

Welcome to the 45th Annual LaBatte Simmentals Bull and Female Sale! We’re excited to present another group of bulls this year. A heartfelt thank you to Barry and Brenda for continuing to have us as the guest consignor—it’s always a privilege to be part of this event.

Our daughters, Embrie and Eva, continue to grow and keep us busy. Embrie is thriving in Grade 1 and loving every bit of her learning adventure, while Eva ensures there’s never a dull moment in our home with her lively personality. The cattle market remains as strong as ever, with record-breaking prices holding steady into this year. Heavyweight crossbred calves are still bringing a premium and bred cow sales have continued to be strong throughout the fall and winter. It’s refreshing to see so much optimism in the industry despite its challenges.

After a few consecutive years of drought, we transitioned to feeding silage to make the most of our limited acres. Now, with another year under our belt, we are pleased with how the cattle have adapted and performed on this feeding program. The bull ration has been carefully developed and balanced to promote sustainable growth and long-term performance.

All the bulls are part of our comprehensive herd health program, will be semen tested, and are fully guaranteed. Delivery is free of charge, though we ask that any bulls returning to our farm for wintering are insured. Most of the bulls in our offering have been homo polled and homo black tested.

Visitors are always welcome to view the bulls at the farm, or feel free to call us to discuss the offering. Videos of the bulls are available at www.eastpoplarsimmentals.com. If you can’t make it to the sale, the Bohrson Marketing team listed at the beginning of the catalogue is ready to assist, or you can reach out to myself or Barry directly with any questions.

We look forward to seeing you all on February 28th at Johnstone Auction Mart in Moose Jaw, SK, or online with DLMS!

East Poplar FAVOR 406M

406M brings a fresh twist to the pedigree lineup, combining the genetics of a MRL Boa daughter we purchased from Flying W at the 2023 Simmsational sale with the influence of their LCDR Favor son. This bull showcases smooth shoulders, impressive rib shape, and excellent depth of quarter. We’re particularly excited about his dam’s future production in our herd, and 406M exemplifies her potential with his balanced design and performance.

East Poplar BOOMER 411M

HETERO POLLED/ HETERO BLACK

403M is a prime example of the excellent disposition we’ve come to expect from the calves out of his dam, BOBE 38B. This bull is long-bodied, well-balanced, and carries himself with the quiet confidence that makes him a pleasure to work with. With his added length and balance, 403M is sure to add pounds to your calf crop while maintaining exceptional temperament.

HOMO POLLED 411M is an RF Boomer son out of a Yuma cow that was purchased from the R Plus dispersal. This bull is long-bodied, smooth in his lines, and carries a wide, strong top. His pedigree and design make him a great choice for adding length and power to your herd.

HOMO POLLED/HOMO BLACK

429M is a unique 3/4 blood bull with a touch of white, offering versatility to work on both cows and heifers. He has an attractive profile, and you have to appreciate the way he transitions smoothly through his shoulder into his front end. We have used True North on heifers for a couple of years, and he calves well with good performance.

HOMO POLLED/HOMO BLACK 440M is a half-blood bull who grabs your attention as you walk through the pen. He’s the result of embryos we purchased from Quinn Wilson, and we have a full sister due to calve any day now who is shaping up to make a beautiful cow. 440M himself is a powerful individual with impressive width over his top and extra extension in his front third.

East Poplar MANDATE 445M

As you go through the pen, you will notice the consistency in these Mandate bulls, and 445M is no exception. We are especially impressed with the Mandate females as they mature into breds, and now that we have a number of them milking, we are excited for their future impact on our herd. 445M represents the quality and potential we’ve come to expect from this sire group.

415M is our only Stratton bull in the sale, and he’s a good one. With belly-dragging depth, herd bull presence, and excellent structural soundness, he’s built to impress. He’s out of a standout IPU 68M daughter who has been a tremendous producer. Her highlights include two daughters sold through Simmsational and one retained at home who stands out as one of our top picks among the bred heifers this year. This bull has the genetics and build to sire an outstanding group of replacement heifers while adding depth and quality to your entire calf crop.

HOMO POLLED

417M is an impressive Maverick son who has caught our eye all year long. He’s out of a first-calf Betts heifer, EPS 251K, who we sold to Rocking P in the 2023 Simmsational. This bull offers extended length, an expansive middle third, and a design that is sure to turn heads. 417M is the kind of bull that stands out for his style and performance.

LaBatte Simmentals will be consigning 12 open heifers in this years sale. We dug deep in the pen to bring some top notch heifers. They are represented by some of our leading sires: Top Tier, El Dorado, Mountain View in the Red Divison. The blacks are sired by IPU 30-06, Hannibal, Barbarian. The Fullbloods are represented by KSL Honky Tonk, KSL Kilipso and Viper. This is a really good set of heifers as you will see sale day. If you have any questions about these heifers before the sale give Barry or Brodyn a call and we would be glad to go over them with you. Or better yet, come and have a look at them before the sale. We would be glad to show you them and their brothers in the bull pen and have a coffee and visit.

This group of black heifers are all features and top end females. Lets start with this heifers mother. We flushed her as a yearling heifer’s, that’s how good she was! We have sold five females through the bull sale off her and two bull calves. And one bred heifer, that was a high seller in the Simmsational sale. This Blue Moon 21E consistently throws ssuper haired progeny with style to burn, capacity, are elegant front ended, deep and angular. And this is how 87M is made too. One of the few El Dorado’s to sell in a black package as he is red. Many of her 1/2 brothers will sell in our Red bull section and they are a feature group. This young black heifer has a great future ahead of her.

What a beautiful heifer sired by our high selling bull in our 2023 Bull Sale, IPU 30-06 47K and mine & Brodyn Cowboy Cut cow going back to our purchase at Agribition Sale, CMS Soda Pop. 34M’s maternal brother sold in last years bull sale, a heifer bull prospect to Leewood Ranch, AB. This heifer is super fronted, nice headed, angular, very feminine, great hair, nice topped, just an excellent prospect to make a front pasture female. On top of that look at her EPD profile.

An excellent ¾ blood heifer sired by SRH Hannibal, a bull we used on some of our heifers as he calves well, but still gives you some performance, some baldies and very saleable offspring. We bought her mother out of the Sunrise Simmental dispersal as a heifer calf where she was one of the top picks. This black homo polled and homo black heifer has a little slap of white on her head, has frame and size, very stylish, angular, good haired, just going to turn into a very nice cow. We really like her a lot.

HOMO POLLED/HETERO BLACK 1/2 FLECK PUREBRED

Something very special here, a black polled solid black baldy heifer sired by the great Full Fleck, JNR Barbarian. This February heifer is an eye catcher for sure. These half Fleck cows in a red or black color make tremendous cows. Some of our earliest black foundation cows were Fleck influenced and turned into some of our best cows ever. 166M’s mother has had three heifers in a row, she’s a Bentley 630D daughter going back to a Cowboy Cut cow. Take a look at this heifer and start a new Fleck influenced cow family.

BROOD COW! If this heifer doesn’t make a great producing cow then I don’t know nothing about cattle. She’s so deep ribbed, soggy, easy doing, good haired and attractive. She’ll be a bull producer for sure like her mother. In last years bull sale, her mother produced a super Mountain View bull calf that sold to the Allemand’s at Shaunavon for $12,000 and now this broody El Dorado daughter. Look who she goes back to – the Pocahontas 105L cow family.

HOMO POLLED

The second calf off of a young Encore daughter. In last years sale her first calf, a bull calf, sold to K3 Ag, SK the Kuschak family, a Top Tier heifer bull. In this years sale she has a really good Mountain View daughter that’s dark red, great haired, broody, lots of style and homo polled. Look at her EPD profile, plus in 11/13 traits and just a little below average in the other two. Almost green across the whole chart. A very stylish heifer that you too could hang a halter on.

Starting our Fullblood’s we lead off with a really good KSL Honky Tonk daughter. Dark red, big goggles, red lips, deep and broody. We used this KSL heifer bull on our Fullblood heifers last year. Ourselves, Oberle and Black Gold had purchased KSL Kilipso out of their bull sale in 2023. We had a bit of trouble collecting semen off him right away, so KSL treated us good and gave us some Jesse James semen and we got some Honky Tonk semen too. Out of about 20 heifers we never touched one. All calved unassisted. This heifer will be sure to catch your eye sale day. We think she’s a special one.

POLLED

A dark cherry red Kilipso daughter that’s very similar in type and kind to the 6M heifer. She’s solid red right down to the ground, big huge goggles, good haired. As you always hear me talking about hair in my footnotes it gets pretty repetitious but its so important in this part of the world where we live. Just a couple of weeks ago it was -50C with the wind here. That’s when you need hair and the feedlots like hairy soggy cattle to feed also. Take a good look at this heifer sale day, she’s very good.

WILF DAVIS 1933-2024

Wilf was my hero, mentor and best friend. I knew Wilf for almost 50 years but we become special friends in the last 30 years. He was working at Bar 5 when I first met him. I remember as a young guy in my 20’s going to a Bar 5 sale in the early 70’s, my first time there I couldn’t believe my eyes, the excitement in the air and the prices were unbelievable. Wilf was a person that once you met him you would never forget him.

Wilf left Bar 5 for a few years and started a consulting business in which I was one of his clients and got to know Wilf better. I’ve still got all his info he had in folders for me, his feed rations and suggestions. Wilf was one of those guys it didn’t matter who you were, a high profile breeder, an investor or just a common joe like me, he always had time for everybody and treated all the same.

Looking back I realize how Wilf’s influence on me was shaping my future! I admired his dedication, work ethic, his interest and foresight in the Simmental Breed. He would call me with ideas and advice and I called him many many times for advice right up to his last days. He was a big part of my 54 years of the Simmental life. We grew to be very good and close friends.

Wilf took my Bull Sale and Simmsational pictures for many years. I’m guessing for 25-30 years. I think Wilf was 85 when he last took them and he was in way better shape then me. Marnie was a big part of this too. She would edit pictures, sent them to me and she also developed our website too. What a team they were! One thing I did learn over the years was not to call Wilf at 7:00 am, but probably okay to call him at midnight. Marnie and Wilf were nighthawks.

I sure miss our calls and his opinions. Wilf and I talked every couple of weeks and in bull selling season sometimes everyday or two. He was keen right till his last month. Watching sales on DLMS, writing down notes, just still so interested in the cattle business. I would still call him for his opinion on bulls or suggestions about our bull sale. I respected his opinion so much. There’s a lot of little things that I’ll always remember of Wilf, his smile, the way he wore his cowboy hat with that little tilt to the side, always just perfect. What a gentleman he was and what a distinguished look he had, he just never aged.

There’s a reason some people are part of our lives but its not always meant to be that they are part of our whole journey. The biggest compliment I can say about Wilf is that in all the years as close friends I never heard one person say a bad thing about him. I think that’s quite a compliment in this day and age. In closing, I’d like to tell you Wilf that you’re still in my favorite contacts in my phone and I will always leave it in there and if you ever want to have a quick chat be sure to call!
