THURSDAY DECEMBER 5TH

AT LEWIS FARMS

Welcome to the 2024 Leading Ladies event

Inspired by the beef industry and how fortunate we are to be involved in a small portion of this industry, raising seedstock cattle. We are always motivated to sell cutting edge genetics and phenotype that we trust will make cows. Our goal with this cowherd or this annual sale has never been to raise show cattle. If some of them or progeny from them find there way to the showring, we think that’s great. However the goal in mind has always been about raising future, high quality cows. Cows that generate profit, cows that align with lots of the commercial cowman’s needs. We believe in selling bred heifers, this gives the buyer an honest snapshot of what that female will resemble as a milking matron. The Simmental and Angus cattle are in such a good position for the long haul in North America. The commercial cattlemen are really benefitting, raising these low maintenance style cattle that garner high output progeny.

The fall is an exciting time in the purebred and commercial sectors. It gives the opportunity to source the cattle to direct your program forward for the year. We really want the cattle represented in this sale to be impact cattle, cornerstones for programs, future donors that seedstock producers will rely on.

Were excited to incorporate the Koberstein family; Don, Brian, Wade, Nick and there wives and families. Kobersteins run a multidiversified farm on the north side of Barrhead. Operating a large cow herd and a competitive purebred program. This has given the Koberstein’s a huge advantage on what the commercial cowman needs and values in a cowherd. There attention to quality details the females on offer in this sale.

As well consigning to this sale is the Zaft family; Vern, Dean, Darcy, Ty, Trey and Riley along with their wives and significant others. The Zafts have consigned two big time females that represent the path their on, raising high performing Simmental cattle.

These breds are available anytime for viewing. Videos will be online the first part of November.

As always we are excited to work with the Bohrson team, the DLMS team. Jim Pulyk and Gary Rairdan, as well as Kent McCune for this sale.

We hope to see everyone on Thursday December 5th.

POLLED TESTING

Every Simmental is polled tested for this sale offering.

Calves by one day of age receive the oral supplement Vitaferst to cover selenium and the vitamins A & D. The intranasal vaccine Nasalgen 3 PMH is given to help prevent any respiratory disease.

The cow herd is given the scour vaccine Guardian to get protection in the colostrum of the scours causing pathogens .

Growing calves are given vision 8 somnus, and vista once. This covers all the main clostridial diseases, respiratory pathogens and histophilus in the two vaccines. This is given both at about two months of age and then at about six months of age.

Before breeding by about two weeks a five way viral usually Vista 5 is given as essentially a booster against the reproductive diseases (IBR & BVD). The clostridial vaccines are boostered with a clostridial vaccine usually containing tetanus (covexin plus or Tasvax 8). The two previous vaccines are given to the cow herd yearly depending on availability. In the fall before the sale they will have had their internal external parasite treatment Solmectin.

These bred heifers also each have a ruminal magnet given orally. This magnet ideally should stay in for the life of the animal and help prevent hardware disease. The odd one can spit these back up but the retention rate should be greater than 95%.

We will insure that these bred heifers have been given their initial and booster shot of scour vaccine to insure this is done before you get them home. The product used as mentioned is guardian approx 6 weeks and 2 weeks before the regular start of calving season.

The heifers were all ultrasounded in July to confirm pregnancy and length of gestation. They are all then pregnancy checked to reconfirm again at scour vaccination time to ensure the pregnancy has been maintained.

Heifers are bred for the first cycle using AI but with natural heat detection assisted with the use of marker {gomer} bulls equipped with chin ball markers.

Roy Lewis DVM

BREEDING

Heifers were all ultrasounded on June 24th. Our breeding information is based around the decision of the vet. We started AI’ing heifers on March 16th for a full cycle. CE bulls were kicked out into each group on April 10th. Bulls stayed with the heifers until May 12th. In the rare case a female might not be exact to that date. The heifers will be pregnancy checked again in early November to confirm pregnancy.
