RUSSIA SAYS TURKSTREAM PIPELINE COULD BE DELAYED

R

ussian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said on Wednesday there was a risk construction of an underwater pipeline to Turkey could be delayed if a related intergovernmental agreement was not signed soon, the Interfax news agency reported. Russia’s Gazprom is yet to start laying pipes beneath the Black Sea for the first line of theTurkStream pipeline, which was expected to start operations by 2017 and bring 15.75 billion cubic meters (bcm) to Turkey annually. “If construction does not start, it is obvious that the schedule is moving,” Novak was quoted as saying. TurkStream is supposed to bring a total of 63 bcm of gas per year to Turkey and to southern Europe via Greece by 2020 -- a project aimed at bypassing Ukraine as a key transit country for Russian gas flowing to Europe. Earlier in July, Gazprom cancelled a contract with Italy’s Saipem to build a link to Turkey but Russian officials have said Moscow was continuing to work on the project.

TURKEY MAY LOWER GROWTH FORECAST AMID POLITICAL CHAOS

A

mid rapidly widening political chaos throughout Turkey, Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek recommended that the country’s growth forecast be revised to express a lowered estimate in televised remarks on Monday. Turkey’s forecasted growth is already less than 3 percent this year, slow in comparison to the rapid growth the country enjoyed in recent years. While growth hit 9 percent in 2010 and 2011, it plummeted to less than 3 percent last year, a figure that is likely to stay roughly the same by the end of 2015. “The latest developments will most likely not affect the growth forecast positively, but I want to emphasize that while they may affect the economy and markets negatively, we will not allow terrorist organizations to carry out operations in Turkey,” Şimşek said.

August 3, 2015 #4

- We had never seen in Georgia when taking decision to make investments in this country. We have invested in Georgia’s first top-class international bus station that was unveiled in Batumi. Initially, we abstained from making investments here, but we were persuaded Georgia had changed. We took a decision and chose the bus station territory. We had seen this territory on only a map. Then we arrived and built European-standard bus station. The founder of this company has been operating in Georgia for 11 months and I would like to stress Georgia is a democratic, free and reliable country. Having arrived here we launched implementing our projects. This project was to be finished in 2019, but it will end ahead of schedule in 2016. The founder of the company is a patriot person. His patriotism and national sense are expressed in his readiness to pay legal taxes in the country, where he is doing business, and promote the economic development in the Region. We do not pay regard to the color and race of persons. We appreciate the sour and human values in peoples. We are part of this city and country. - How much has your company invested? How many persons does your company employ and what new projects do you plan to implement in Ajara? - The Metro City project is being implemented at high paces. We also plan to implement a

new project in the vicinity of this territory. We have bought a part of the Intourist hotel and we are conducting negotiations with one of the hotels. In whole, we represent 15 companies with about 1000 employees. A total amount of the investments is 300 million USD. Indeed, Along with doing business and making money, we also care for improving the economic conditions of our employees. We pay higher salaries to our staff compared to other companies in the Region. We want to advance educated young people in Georgia. For the first time in Georgia, we have introduced European level transportation standard. I love Georgia and I back this country on the international level too. We protect the interests of Georgia in the social, culture and athletics directions. We hope to bring much benefit to Georgia and make much contribution to the development of Georgia. We will always demonstrate our love to Georgia. - How would you characterize Georgia’s business environment? - Georgia is a very important and leading country. We have seen a very good environment and we have carried out many projects. This signifies Georgia provides business-friendly environment, where the state sector promotes and supports businessmen. They have opened all roads to us and we are striving for our goals. We have met no obstacles and barriers. We are delighted by this situation and plan to increase our investments. Capital of 50 million USD will create output of 0.5-1 billion USD. We have always received answers to our questions and there was no exception in this respect. - What further steps should the state sector take to draw more investments to the Region? -The major challenge is the fact the civil sec-

tor is very weak. The business expansion and settlement of our own affairs do not signify all barriers have been overcome. We know many investments have been made in various regions of Georgia, but many of them have been suspended. The government should introduce new regulations to oblige the project owners to finish the construction of the assets. This step would form a good business sector. As to Batumi, this city will become a center of tourism and I do believe this consideration will come true. I believe the suspended construction projects should be renewed and finished. To discharge the city from traffic jams, parking places and similar assets should be moved to outskirts. Khelvachauri provides excellent conditions for that. - There are serious problems in terms of employment in Georgia. All Authorities have promised to resolve this problem, but the problems remains\ relevant anyway. What should be done to settle this issue? - The government should spend 100 000 USD to create the world-standard job places. If the state sector cannot cope with tasks, then the private sector should be promoted. - Highland regions of Ajara provides favorable conditions for the tourism development. Do you plan to construct hotels in one of the ski resorts in Ajara? - Good infrastructure is required to create the center. Good natural conditions and beautiful nature without comfortable hotels do not suffice to develop tourism. There were only several ski resorts in several regions of Turkey previously, but today their number has extremely increased. At this stage, we are targeting Tbilisi, but we will think about the mentioned direction too. Giorgi Siradze

ajara business week

AZERBAIJAN AZERBAIJAN, IRAN TO IMPLEMENT JOINT PROJECTS IN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SECTOR

TOM DAY Regional Director – Hospitality Services & Investor Services

Cushman & Wakefield | Veritas Brown take on Ajara region as a Favorable Business Destination - How forward-looking is Ajara region in terms of new investments? - Cushman & Wakefield | Veritas Brown help facilitate investor entry to the Ajara region - equity funds, high net worth individuals, Georgian and International businesses and extended developer companies; with many clients generally impressed with the ease of doing business in the Ajara region. On behalf of Cushman & Wakefield | Veritas Brown, I can say that being part of the C&W global network enables us to access 16,000 property consultants in 259 offices across 60 countries throughout the world, and we are therefore constantly in touch with the regional and global real estate investors. We do communicate the positive effects, both in terms of regional development and investor returns when pitching the Adjara region to our clients. With efficient approval processes from local authorities, comparatively low licensing fees and fair corporate taxation rates, constant readiness to contribute and assist the investors’ needs from the local government, Ajara region is perceived as a favorable business destination. - How would you describe your field of occupation in the Ajara region? - Cushman & Wakefield | Veritas Brown advise numerous development companies, existing hotel operators and owners, retail operators and real estate owners in the Ajara region. Our International Advisory

Services team, who have broad experience in both local and International context, specialize in initial concept, feasibility study, financial reporting and produce investment grade reports that are accepted by global and local banking institutions and equity funds. We have advised many of the largest mixed use development projects in the Ajara region, for example, the Hilton Batumi Hotel & Belle Vue Residences, the Atlas Georgia development at No.1 Mtsvane Street, the Babillon Tower project on Rustaveli Avenue as well as luxury spa and wellness concepts in Ureki and Kaprovani. Our unique Investment Services team has sourced startup capital and project finance for a range of projects in the region. - What are your goals and objectives? - We aim to bring additional foreign direct investment into the Ajara region in the form of high net worth investors, global hospitality and retail brands. Our objectives are to communicate to domestic and regional investors the real estate developments in the region that have strong differentiation, unique locations, and high-quality and higher-end concepts. Mixed use developments projects with these characteristics and that encourage all year round participation are expected to experience stronger sales and price growth. - To what extent will you and your company benefit those projects? - We create added benefit to a development project through inter-

national expert analysis and financial modelling to ensure that our clients receive the project rates of return that are commensurate with the discount rates applied to finance in Georgia. Typically regional and global investors want to see at least a 15-20% internal rate of return per year to invest in projects in the Ajara region. Where a development project needs part or full financing, our Investor Services team then aims to bring about investment by matching the available projects to our extensive database of global investors. Our hospitality team also offer the operator and brand search services, assisting the hotel developers by bring the international operators and brand names to the market, hence adding value to the projects. - What are the expected challenges you might be facing? - Based on statistics, the majority of tourism demand in Ajara is concentrated over the summer season. Extending the summer season and growing demand for winter products in Ajara is a near-term challenge. To overcome this challenge an investor or existing operator might look to attract winter conferences, develop spa and wellness facilities that offer all year round services and also facilities suitable for professional sports teams in terms of winter training. The overarching near-term challenge for both, the regional and national administrations is to increase the quantity of flights into Batumi Airport, and thus promote Batumi to a wider regional and European tourism markets.

- How would the region benefit from your projects? - Cushman & Wakefield | Veritas Brown help facilitate global hotel brands and operators to enter the Ajara region and this should have a positive effect on both the tourism number and spends due to the fact that hotels operate with destination marketing companies (DMCs) to promote their hotels and the region. These DMCs also help spread the Batumi name recognition and image across global marketing platforms and across the global travel networks. Our Investor Services team is on track to place over USD $100M in transactions by the end of 2015 in the form of client acquisition/disposals of assets and client investments in project developments in the Ajara region. - What are the projects you are planning in the future? - There is strong and growing interest in real estate investments in Georgia both, from European and Western European countries. Cushman & Wakefield | Veritas Brown, is also planning to organize together with the Georgian Investment Agency, the “Investment Forum – Batumi 2015” to be held on September 18th, 2015 at the 5* Hilton Hotel in the Black Sea resort of Batumi. The event is expected to gather top companies and professionals from the region and provide them with a unique opportunity to come together, discuss exciting prospects in Georgia and discover current investment-ready projects in the real estate and tourism sectors.

IFAD-financed Agriculture Support Project (ASP) Ends, New Plans on the Horizon

T

oday the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia summarized its progress and accomplishments within the Agriculture Support Project (ASP), financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) The Deputy Minister of Agriculture Nodar Kereselidze, IFAD Project Manager Ms Durmishidze and Ministry’s Head of Reclamation Department Valerian Mchedlidze presented the outcomes of ASP’s to the press. ASP is a long-term project that started back in

2010 and will be completed by the end of September of this year. The Project is aimed at resolving infrastructural problems for farmers in Georgia. One of ASP’s main directions was the rehabilitation of irrigation systems and eliminating water irrigation-related issues throughout Georgia. 6,325 kilometers of irrigation lines have been rehabilitated; 14,400 families have been provided with irrigation water. 11,000 hectares of farming lands have been irrigated directly as the result of ASP, the Ministry representatives stated, emphasizing the climate change gains of this endeavor.

IFAD’s Project Manager in Georgia, Lali Durmishidze, presented the Agriculture Support Project’s summary report. “Areas of activity included Inner Kartli, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, and Samtskhe-Javakheti municipalities, where 6 irrigation systems were successfully rehabilitated,” Durmishidze stated. IFAD’s next project will be Agriculture Modernization, Market Access and Resilience (AMMAR). The project’s goal is to improve farmers’ knowledge and implement new technologies. With a budget of approximately $19 million, the project will also include grant handouts, both small – $5000-$10,000 – and large-sized sums, at around $70,000. “We plan to continue our cooperation with IFAD in the future as well. The new project will be oriented not only at rehabilitating the irrigation system in Georgia, but also creating an agricultural infrastructure aimed at implementing environmentally friendly farming in Georgia,” the Deputy Minister of Agriculture Nodar Kereselidze stated. The International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) is one of the most generous donors in the agriculture sector, and has been financing various projects in Georgia since 1998.

A

zerbaijan and Iran have established a working group to implement joint projects in the alternative energy sector. Jamil Melikov, the deputy head of Azerbaijan’s State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources, told reporters on July 30 that the working group was established as part of a memorandum signed with the energy ministry of Iran. “The working group will engage in organizational matters,” Melikov said. “It will offer various projects and discuss bringing investors, specialists from both sides, give recommendations so that through our joint efforts we can implement projects in Azerbaijan and Iran.” He went on to add that the abovementioned memorandum also provides for a mutual exchange of information on current and future projects in each of the two countries. “Currently we are discussing organizational matters: the time and venue for the first meeting, and also the working group’s activity plan.” Melikov also noted that during an Azerbaijani delegation’s visit to Iran on August 3-4, the two sides expect to discuss acceleration of the working group’s activities and settle bureaucratic nuances.

CUSTOMS EXEMPTIONS TO LEAD TO DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH TECH PARKS IN AZERBAIJAN

T

he seven-year exemption for the residents of Mingachevir High Tech Park from customs duties for importing high-tech product components will give an impetus to the establishment of new and the development of existing high tech parks in Azerbaijan, Vugar Bayramov believes. The Chairman of the Center for Economic and Social Development told Azernews that customs privileges would pave the way for a decrease in expenditures. “It, in turn, creates a financial incentive for the development of the high tech parks and leads to an increase of state support in this regard. It also leads to an increase of interest in innovative and information technologies,” he said. The expert also said that the development of the information technologies sector is considered as one of the top priorities of Azerbaijan’s non-oil sector.

zerbaijani exporters will be able to import goods in the territory of the United States on preferential terms or without paying customs duty until 2018, said the message of Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Foundation (AZPROMO), published July 31 on its website. The changes are provided in the act adopted by the US Congress to extend the program “Generalized System of Preferences” (GSP). This act extends the right to use the GSP program until December 31, 2017, said the message. The act came into force on July 29, 2015 and these benefits will be also applied to goods imported into the United States since the period of the loss of power of the previous act [July 31, 2013]. Accordingly, the exporters will be able to get back the customs duties paid for goods delivered to the US in the period from July 31, 2013 to July 29, 2015, said the message.

BTK TO INCREASE IMPORTANCE OF AZERBAIJAN RAILWAYS, SAYS FITCH

T

he commissioning of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway will further increase the importance of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC and Georgian Railway JSC in freight transportation within the region and will enhance their business profiles, said Fitch Ratings July 30. Fitch said that the freight rail transportation volumes continued to decline in most former Soviet Union (FSU) countries over the first five months of 2015 and it is expected that the rail volumes are to remain weak in the second half of this year on the back of lower GDP growth across the region.

IMF APPROVES $1.7 BN LOAN INSTALLMENT TO UKRAINE

T

he International Monetary Fund announced today the approval of a $1.7 billion loan installment to Ukrainedespite uncertainty about the country’s debt sustainability and a conflict with separatist forces. The IMF executive board backed the release of the loan, part of a four-year $17.5 billion support program awarded in March as Ukraine’s economy neared collapse after more than a year of civil war. An initial $5 billion disbursement was released at the time. The IMF said in a statement the rescue program is to “support the government’s economic program, which aims to put the economy on the path to recovery, restore external sustainability, strengthen public finances, and support economic growth by advancing structural and governance reforms, while protecting the most vulnerable.”

US IMPOSES FURTHER SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA OVER CRIMEA, EAST UKRAINE CONFLICT

T

he United States has imposed further sanctions against Russia over the events in eastern Ukraine and Crimea. Eleven more people and 15 more companies have been put on the sanctions list. Among the newly included firms are affiliate companies of Russian oil giant Rosneft, as well as several organizations linked to one of the country’s major banks - Vnesheconombank. Sanctions were also imposed against five Crimean commercial ports located in the towns of Sevastopol, Feodoisa, Kerch, Evpatoria and Yalta, as well as the Kerch ferry service. The US embassy to Russia said that Washington regards the new sanctions not as an escalation of tensions between the countries but rather as a “routine step” in strengthening current US policy.

UKRAINE BONDS CLIMB AS CREDITORS PRESENTED WITH NEW PROPOSALS

U

kraine’s bonds rose to a five-month high as the nation said talks to restructure $19 billion of debt will continue this week after new proposals were presented to creditors. The government is expecting to receive a response in the coming days to proposals it handed to a creditor group led by Franklin Templeton about a week ago, Finance Minister Natalie Jaresko said in Kiev on Monday. The latest offer is “market-orientated” and “fair,” Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said at today’s meeting. Ukraine’s bonds are heading for their biggest monthly gain this year after the country made a $120 million interest payment on Friday, signaling progress is being made in restructuring negotiations. The two sides agreed on July 1 to start direct talks after a two-month standoff over whether there should be a writedown to the face value of the nation’s Eurobonds with Ukraine repeatedly threatening to stop servicing its debt.

UKRAINIAN TECH STARTUPS SHOWCASE POTENTIAL AT LONDON ROADSHOW

A

s Ukraine’s technology startups struggle to connect with Silicon Valley investors, their fellow countrymen in London are trying to open doors in the U.K. investor community. To get the ball rolling, Ukrainians Serhiy Burnus and Oleksiy Kolchanov organized the Ukrainian Startups Roadshow at three London locations on July 23-25. Taking place at Bloomberg headquarters, Google Campus, and Deloitte Digital Studio, 10 earlystage technology startups from Ukraine presented their products to an audience of almost 250 business people and investors. Around 70 percent of the visitors were Ukrainians, most of them based in London. Professional investors from venture capital firms, investment banksand investment funds accounted for 20-40 percent of the visitors, depending on the day of the event.

Foreign Citizens Show Much Interest in Purchasing Apartments in Gonio Gionio’s Sewage and Water Supply Problems Must Be Resolved LLC Kvariati has invested about 1.5 million USD in Gonio to construct a residential building. The construction works will end by the end of 2015 and the building will include 72 apartments. About 30% of the apartments have been already sold and the company representatives hope all apartments will be entirely sold in the near future. In his interview to the Ajara Business Week (ABW) DAVID KUCHUKHIDZE, a founder of Kvariati Lux and member of the board of directors, talks about the reasons for which the company has made investments in the Ajara Region, how developed the housing sector is in Ajara, what are the perspectives for the housing sector development and some other interesting issues.

- Where is being this building constructed? How many floors will the building include? How many apartments will you sell and what phase has the construction process reached? -The asset is being constructed in Gonio, at St. Andria First-called Street 41. The 9-floor building will include 72 apartments. In august we will construct the 9th floor and the construction works will entirely end at the end of 2015. - How many apartments have been already sold and how big is the demand? - At this stage we have sold about 30% of the apartments. The demand is registered from both domestic and foreign citizens, including from Russia, Ukraine and other countries. - Why have you made investments in Ajara? What is the investment project’s value? - Total investments will be about 1.3 million USD. We decided to launch a development project in Ajara in 2005, but we started the project implementation in 2008. The country suffered uffered from the August war and we decided to suspend spend activities. In 2012 we resumed the projectt that will be finished in the near future. - How developed is the housing sectorr in Ajara? How would you appraise the developlopment sector’s perspectives in this Region? - I believe the housing business has a genunuinely good potential of development in the Ajara ara Region. As to Gonio, there is much potential, deespite the fact housing companies are mainly innterested in Batumi. I believe investment inflowss will promote the development business in Gonio. Our company also plans to draw additional investments. - Business and business environment in Ajara. How would you appraise it? What has been improved? How successfully does the business sector communicate with the local government? - First of all, the business sector is free of any pressure and no one intervenes in its activity rudely. I would just note there are serious problems with sewage and water supply systems in Gonio and these problems must be resolved. Both local residents and businessmen have to dig out wells and connect them to water supply

systems and all these efforts take additional time and financial resources. There are problems with road infrastructure too. The existing motorway is overloaded all time and both tourists and local residents face difficulties with locomotion. According to my information, additional new motorway will be constructed. The project has been already developed and I hope it will be implemented in the near future. As to the communication with the local government, everything proceeds in a normal way. They have rendered full support to our company in due time. I would like to stress overall support from Batumi City Hall. - Do you plan to implement new projects in the near future? - Indeed, we plan to implement certain projects. I have noted the Ajara Region has got huge potential and good perspectives. We should employ these resources. We are trying to draw more investors, who are supervising the Gonio and Ajara region development perspectives to take due decisions.

WORLD FACEBOOK NOW USED BY HALF OF WORLD’S ONLINE USERS

H

alf of the world’s estimated online population now check in to the social networking giant Facebook at least once a month. Facebook said the number of people who use it at least monthly grew 13% to 1.49 billion in the three months to the end of June. The number is equal to half of the estimated three billion people who use the internet worldwide. Of those users, it said well over half, 65%, were now accessing Facebook daily. The rise in monthly active users helped drive second quarter revenue up 39% year-on-year to $4.04bn (£2.6bn). Mobile advertising revenue was the biggest factor, accounting for more than three quarters of the total. In the US, the company said people were now spending more than one out of every five minutes on their smartphones on Facebook.

SPAIN’S ECONOMY ENJOYED ANOTHER GROWTH SPURT

S

pain’s economy had another solid quarter between April and June, with a 1% growth spurt, according to figures just released. That’s bang on what analysts were expecting, and it means the economy has grown 3.1% since the same period last year. That’s the best figure for the country since 2007, before both the financial crisis in 2008 and the euro crisis that began in 2010. Growth of 3.1% may not seem like all that much, but in the context of the eurozone, that’s pretty rapid. It is what has made Spain, a former crisis country in which unemployment is still eye-wateringly high, Europe’s star performer. Its growth rate is better even than the United Kingdom’s.

The fastest way to get to Batumi is by plane. Duration of the flight is 45 minutes and the price constitutes 150 GEL BY BUS Buses and minibuses (marshutkas) operate regularly between Batumi and Tbilisi. Travel time is around 6 hours. The fare is 20 Lari. The scenery along the way is interesting. The best place to take the marshutka in Tbilisi is from Didube metro station, exit the station and you will get bombarded by people asking where you are going, just tell them and they will find you the right bus. They leave approximately every hour. But they will wait until the bus has enough passengers on it before they leave. The ride can be a bit rough, so if you get travel sick, definitely take something for it before you leave. BY CAR Road transportation from outside of the country is possible from the neighboring countries Armenia, Turkey and Azerbaijan. BY TRAIN Georgian Railways operates trains between Batumi and Tbilisi. Night train leaves Tbilisi at 22:25 and arrives in Batumi’s Makhinjauri Station at

7:05 the next morning. First class sleeping wagon costs 40 GEL (2 people per cabin), second class costs 23 GEL (4 people per cabin). The berths are a little short, narrow and hard but rather comfortable, and linen is provided if you ask for them early enough in the train. Train tickets can be bought at the station or from an office in the old town at 5 General Mazniashvili St (between Melashvili and Abashidze). This office is very plain and nondescript with no signs in English. The door and window frames are green and some metal chairs are visible inside. Hours are 09:00 to 18:00. BY BIKE There are a few adventurous cyclists passing through Batumi (Spring 2014 average 2+ per week). The road from Batumi to Khulo is mountainous and sometimes the road after Khulo is closed (construction Spring 2014). Consider contacting the Khulo municipality if you were planning on biking the southern road between Batumi-Tblisi. There are two reasonably priced and knowledgeable bike shops on Pushkin Avenue, in addition to other more trendy shops in the old city.

SAMSUNG SERIOUSLY MESSED UP WITH THE GALAXY S6

S

amsung has posted another set of disappointing quarterly earnings, with the launch of its newest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6, failing to bolster its business. The South Korean electronics company released its earnings report for Q2 on Wednesday. Profits dropped 8% year-on-year — its fifth consecutive decline. Sales, meanwhile, dropped from 52.35 trillion won in Q2 2014 to 48.54 trillion won. Samsung concedes that the impact of the launch of the S6 “was quite marginal due to low smartphone shipments and an increase in marketing expenses for new product launches.” Samsung didn’t break out sales figures, but the research company Strategy Analytics estimates that Samsung’s smartphone shipments have dropped from 95.3 million units in 2014 to 89 million in 2015. And The Wall Street Journal points out that operating profits for Samsung’s mobile division have dropped 37.6% year-on-year.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA HAS ORDERED US ENGINEERS TO BUILD THE WORLD’S FASTEST COMPUTER

P

resident Obama issued an executive order Wednesday for the United States to build the world’s fastest computer over the next decade. Mr. Obama has created the National Strategic Computing Initiative to help the country lead in the development of High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems. Competitiveness in this field remains “essential to economic competitiveness, scientific discovery and national security,” the White House announced Wednesday. The initiative includes two key goals. First: to increase the speed of calculations to one exaflop (1018 arithmetic operations per second). This is about 30 times quicker than today’s fastest machines, according to Wired. Second: to “efficiently manipulate vast and rapidly increasing quantities of both numerical and non-numerical data.

Pelion in Batumi

T

Ratatouille foodblog (http://ratatui.me/)

Review

he Ratatouille blog visited one of the newly opened restaurants in Batumi, “Pelion”, and talked to us about their impressions. We visited Batumi. What do you go to taste in first and foremost? Adjaruli Khachapuri, of course. Although we decided to forego this tradition for two reasons: it was raining so hard that you wouldn’t want to poke your nose out from Hilton, and Hilton itself had a newly opened restaurant “Pelion” with its own assortment of Georgian cuisine, including the Adjaruli Khachapuri. But more on this later. In short, the newly opened Hilton looks fantastic and has an ideal location, with the sea from one side and the Batumi Park and lake view from the other. We forgot about the rain and decided to visit the Pelion restaurant. “In Greek mythology, Mount Pelion (named from the mythical king Peleus, father of Achilles) was the homeland of Chiron the Centaur, tutor of many ancient Greek heroes, such as Jason, Achilles, Theseus and Heracles”. A hostess greeted us at the entrance, boasting European standards and traditional Georgian chokha clothing. Georgian national clothing is generally a theme with the Batumi Hilton dress code and is ideally merged with the modern environment. One thing that immediately caught my eye was a chokha-clad boy who helped us carry our luggage. It wasn’t his duty, but he felt obligated and this left an uncomfortable impression. We sat down with the menu. Prices were normal, less expensive than expected from a 5-star hotel restaurant, and a bit pricier than in neighboring cafés. It was immediately jarring that traditional Georgian dishes were served not-so traditionally here. For example, the Chakapuli was adorned with crispy Lavashi bread, and Ghomi was made from real ghomi seeds and had little to do with the traditional Ghomi taste, with mushrooms and fried cheese on it. The fish with bazhe sause and groceries was soft and tasty. Despite having recently traveled, we weren’t carrying a large appetite. Still, we couldn’t resist the temptation of the Hilton Batumi Khachapuri in the menu with tomatoes and bacon. We ordered it. This turned out to be a very different Adjaruli Khachapuri – a child of the Georgian khachapuri and Italian pizza, my new love. This khachapuri had a synergy of both Georgian and European cheeses, as well as tomato sauce and soft bacon slices. You could close your eyes and feel a bit of Italy, and a bit of Adjara. Now I’d like to tell you about these wonderful desserts, but a separate blog post would serve it better. Definitely click here! Prior, I’d like to get you acquainted with the prices of what’s on the photos: • Ghomi with naghebi, mixed mushrooms and crisp onions – 9 GEL • Salmon fillet in bazhe sause, barda, potatoes and pomegranate – 15 GEL • Hilton Batumi Khachapuri with tomato sauce and bacon – 18 GE
