Creative art works! Each year, we touch thousands of young lives with creative youth development services. On subsequent pages of this journal, you will read compelling statistics that demonstrate why that matters. But, in all truthfulness, charts and graphs are not what get me out of bed every morning. I simply can’t imagine a New York City, let alone a world, in which kids do not have the opportunity to make art. For me, developing an appreciation of beauty is a way to think about how the world could be and to inspire us to make our dreams reality. There is both a rigor and a freedom to all art-making at CAW – we foster a sense of investment and ownership in the art and help develop a sense of personal agency with all our programs, from our Saturday art workshops for elementary school kids to our large-scale public art programs employing youth apprentices. We outline the tenets of social justice, draw on emotions, and paint a language of critical thinking that spans across learning disciplines. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, and contemplate our future, I would like to thank all of you, and there are many, who have helped us empower youth and inspire possibility. I am humbled and grateful for all of your support.

THE CHALLENGE: WHY THE ARTS MATTER NOW, MORE THAN EVER, FOR YOUNG, UNDERSERVED NEW YORKERS
In the US, 41% of children between ages 12 and 17 live in low-income families¹
In NYC’s under-resourced neighborhoods, 45% of children live in poverty²

OUR PROGRAMS
Public Art Youth Employment Program Employment for teens and young adults, creating large-scale art works and multimedia projects. 2015 was our largest program year to date, with 11 worksites
Out-of-School Time Artworks After-school and weekend art programs where youth can exercise their artistic, technical, and developmental skills in safe, creative, and engaging environments. In 2015, served 1,286 participants, a 74% increase over 2014 Community Artworks Interactive art-making projects in the context of larger public events that empower youth to engage with their community and celebrate the power of art. Doubled the number of programs offered in 2015

Creative Art Works has accomplished a great deal in the last thirty years. CAW empowers young people through art programming every day, by promoting creative expression and community engagement, that also serves to enrich their lives academically. In memoriam Brookie Maxwell—painter, sculptor and curator—dedicated her life to bringing people together through the healing and inspirational power of art. Her involvement in Creative Art Works “had a huge impact on the kids because someone came along and was interested in what they had to say,” remembered her son, Ellis Donlin Maxwell.⁸

Neil J. Goldmacher Vice Chairman, Newmark Grubb Knight Frank
Neil J. Goldmacher joined Newmark Grubb Knight Frank in 1995 as a senior managing director and became a principal in 2000. He currently serves as vice chairman of the firm. Neil is one of the most sought-after and highly regarded real estate advisors in the United States. He specializes in national corporate services with an emphasis in tenant representation and strategic planning. A seasoned veteran of corporate services, Neil is vastly experienced with multi-market transactions spanning a global scale. His scope of expertise includes various types of real estate requirements in addition to complex multi-market assignments with large corporate accounts. Additionally, Neil is experienced with corporate services work, with an enviable roster of premier clients to match, including The Blackstone Group, Hachette Book Group, Neuberger Berman, Time, Inc., Guardian Insurance, CME Group, and

ING US, Inc. Other clients include AIG, Elliott Management, Sagent Advisors, Providence Equity Partners, Apollo Financial, Morgan Stanley, Knight Trading Group, Moore Capital Management, Texas Pacific Group, Mizuho, Wachovia, Peter J. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Neil has been a longstanding supporter of Creative Art Works.
Marcia Sells Dean of Students, Harvard Law School Former Associate Dean, Columbia University School of the Arts, a community partner
Marcia Lynn Sells, Dean of Students at Harvard Law School was a longtime Columbia University senior administrator. She held positions as Associate Dean in the School of the Arts for Outreach & Education and Associate Vice President, Program Development and Initiatives, for the office of Government and Community Affairs. In this capacity, Marcia led the charge in developing the partnership with Creative Art Works, which connected the University and the surrounding neighborhoods while the young CAW artists created stunning art about the evolution of the neighborhood and the expansion of the campus.
Dean Sells has held a variety of progressively responsible positions in academia, the private sector and public service including: Educational Consultant for Dance Theatre of Harlem, Vice President of Employee and Organizational Development for Reuters America, Vice President of Organizational Development & Human Resources, and Vice President Player Education and Development for the National Basketball Association, Dean of Students at Columbia University School of Law, and Assistant District Attorney trying rape and child abuse cases for the Kings County District Attorney’s Office. Marcia earned her Juris Doctorate from Columbia University School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts from Barnard College.

Benjamin Lev Founding Principal, Hamilton Grange Middle School, an education partner
Ben Lev loved drawing and painting classes growing up in Las Vegas, NV. After graduating from UCLA with a B.A. in English Literature in 2004, Ben spent two years teaching math as part of the first Teach for America corps ever placed in Brooklyn. He earned his M.S.T in Special Education at Pace University in 2006 and an M.S. in Educational Leadership from City College in 2011. Ben collaborated with his fellow math teachers at MS 324 in Washington Heights to create a curriculum that supported significantly improved scores for 8th graders on the New York State Mathematics Test. In 2010, Ben became the Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction at PS 192 in Hamilton Heights, where he and fellow educator Paul Manzi cocreated a curriculum that resulted in a nearly 35% increase in student progress on the NYS Math Test and a 30% increase in ELA scores. While at PS 192, Ben embraced the CAW partnership, serving the elementary school children.

In 2014, Ben founded Hamilton Grange Middle School. Creative Art Works partnered with Hamilton Grange that same year to offer in-school and afterschool arts programs. Ben is a diehard baseball fanatic. He and his wife are on a quest to see a game in all 30 Major League stadiums in the US and Canada.

It takes many brushstrokes to make a painting; likewise, it takes the efforts of many individuals, all working towards a common goal, to build a vibrant organization. I am humbled by the thought that Creative Art Works has been around long enough now that there are hundreds of people who have played a part in conveying us to our 30th year. We are grateful to all those who’ve contributed to the success of our mission, whether as a donor, an employee, a volunteer or a programming partner. A special thanks to our tireless staff who puts their heart, soul, and talent into making a difference every day. I would like to thank my fellow directors. This year, I am pleased to welcome three new members – Rich Morris, Steven Soutendijk and Eric Withrow. I would also like to congratulate two of our longstanding directors who have assumed important leadership roles.
