DEVELOPIN NEW PERS Brian Ricklin Executive Director and CEO

Our city has the greatest art and culture, the largest pool of intellectual and creative talent, and the most business acumen and innovation perhaps in the world. Yet a large portion of our NYC youth lack access to the arts and limited opportunity to explore their creativity. Developing art skills with our youth offers them a medium to forecast and influence the future. Very often providing a safe and, more important, a brave space to have a conversation about their hopes and dreams, challenges and obstacles, is vital for them to build a brighter tomorrow. Edgar Degas said, “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” Artists are storytellers. What moves me so very much is the help we offer young people to foster their voice and sense of agency. It is priceless, partly because of what Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and filmmaker, said, “No one can invalidate someone else’s story.” As a creative youth development organization, we encourage the artist, at every age, and their art to be authentic — it can be nuanced or defiant, but our hope is that it is unapologetic. We encourage young artists to creatively solve a problem 6

SPECTIVES and engage the viewer. We teach skills that help convey realness and relatability. While we all have biases, we find that our making and sharing of art breaks through those barriers and builds bridges. With perspective, we are not just more receptive in color and composition, we can more clearly see without superiority, bigotry or indifference — we begin to realize how we are so inter-dependent and inter-related. During our event tonight and throughout this journal, we hope you will see the skills and tools we together are helping develop, feel the connections our young people are building to their community and their academic and career opportunities, and appreciate that they and we together are reaching for new possibilities. With sincere thanks,

7

PERSPECTIVE MATTERS Multiple studies suggest that participating in arts education programs yields a host of benefits, including improved school attendance, higher achievement in math and literacy, and increased graduation rates. Students from low-income environments who have access to arts education are more likely to aspire to college and have stronger ties to their community.

OPENING THE APERTURE That’s why we use the collaborative artistic process to equip NYC youth with the tools and skills needed to explore multiple perspectives, to connect them with the world beyond their front door, and inspire them to engage in challenging and respectful conversations, because the future will be framed by the children we are teaching today.

OUR PROGRAMS

We collaborate with dozens of community partners to implement high-impact creative youth development programs serving NYC young people aged 4-24. Public Art Youth Employment Program Paid apprenticeships for teens and young adults, creating large-scale art works and multimedia projects while imparting technical, life and job skills. We provided 150 youth apprenticeships in FY16, a 27% increase over the prior 12 months. Out-of-School-Time Programs After-school, weekend and vacation programs where youth develop and stretch their artistic, technical, and social-emotional skills in safe, creative, and engaging environments. Served over 1,000 participants in FY16. In-School Programs Arts-based residencies in partnership with schools help to mitigate their lack of arts education resources, illuminate the core curriculum, and engage students in the learning environment. More than doubled our number of classes in the 2015-2016 academic year. Community Programs Interactive projects in the context of larger public events that empower youth to connect with their community and explore unique perspectives. Served over 2,500 people through 10 community art-making events in FY16. 10

Ydanis Rodriguez Council Member 10th District, Manhattan

Dear Brian, I would like to extend my congratulations to Creative Art Works on the occasion of the Framing the Future Annual Benefit for Kids. Through the support of you, your staff and your Board of Directors, CAW continues to provide invaluable social and educational services for youth in the Washington Heights and Inwood communities, as well as in the entire city. It is through your leadership on issues such as academic enrichment, community engagement, youth leadership and providing under-served children and teenagers access to art programs and creative expressions, that Creative Art Works has left its mark on our community and on this city as a whole. I would also like to congratulate and say a special thank you to this year’s honorees; Glen J. Weiss and David Fanning for their support and dedication to artistic development and education for the youth in our community. Through its programs that empower children and young adults through art and allow them to exercise their imagination freely, Creative Art Works is ensuring a brighter future for the youth across the city. Youth development is a crucial part of fostering leadership and your organization is certainly on the right path. Once again congratulations! Sincerely,

OUR STAFF’S PERSPECTIVES HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY ART Brian Ricklin, Executive Director and CEO “John Steinbeck once said that great teachers are great artists, and equally rare. He further said, ‘Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.’ A great creative youth development organization cultivates talent and provides a framework where teaching artists can manifest both their artistic capacities and educational competence. It fills my soul to see our teaching artists foster human drive, help youth make connections between their creative process and all sorts of learning, understand their world, and frame their future.”

Karen Jolicoeur, Director of Development “As a performing artist, I have often been required to explore someone else’s perspective or life experience in the service of the composer or the character. To convincingly present another’s truth requires that we set aside our own points of view, connect to new possibilities within ourselves, and be the bridge that bears them to the audience. In the truly magical moments, ‘other’ evaporates. Empathy is essential.”

Scott Lucas, Marketing & Communications Manager “As a child with dyslexia, I initially found it easier to draw pictures than write to sentences. So, it was a revelation to me when I discovered a Spiderman comic book at the local barbershop. To this day, I am drawn to any sort of narrative art, from Egyptian hieroglyphics to medieval illuminated manuscripts to the historical paintings of Jacques-Louis David. Images communicate ideas and emotions in a way that bypasses language and speaks directly to the heart.”

16

Daniel Bergman, Program Director “The arts thrive on divergent thinking. I don’t know if I became a divergent thinker because I am an artist, or if I became an artist because I am a divergent thinker. In either case, my life in the arts has cultivated my ability to look at questions and problems from multiple perspectives, to identify unique possible solutions and imagine the world not as it is, but as it could be.”

Lance Paladino, Program Manager “Visual art, music and all other disciplines allow me to exist in the world of ideas and their expressions. This relationship continually deepens my appreciation for life, beauty, and how people express themselves.”

Christina Mozumdar, Program Associate “Art is all about getting in contact with our deep-seated ability to grasp reality and create something new out of it – it’s culture in motion. Only through art was I able to realize that there are multiple ways of interpreting and appreciating our world and those around us. ”

Jill Goldstein, Office Manager “As a social worker working in homeless shelters, I saw the impact that art has on kids. Some days it was just for fun – other days, it was the only way they could express the myriad challenges in their lives. Whether or not they were verbal, or had diminished capacity, whatever the circumstances of their lives, art was an outlet. Art matters.”

I think the skills I’m learning are going to be useful in the future because I might want to be a mechanical engineer or an architect. David Fanning Principal, A. Philip Randolph Campus High School An education partner

David Fanning’s aspiration for his school community is to embody the ideal expressed by A. Philip Randolph, who said, “A community is democratic only when the humblest and weakest person can enjoy the highest civil, economic, and social rights that the biggest and most powerful possess.” David has been Principal of A. Philip Randolph Campus High School, one of the few remaining full-size, comprehensive high schools in Manhattan, since December of 2011. Prior to his current position, he served as Assistant Principal of Administration at Brooklyn Technical High School, and taught at Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences. He received a B.A. in Secondary Education from Canisius College and an M.A. in Political and Social Science from the New School for Social Research.

Anatomy and Physiology Illustration Lab, Dual Language Art Academy, Narrative Art, and the Alternative Assessment Arts Project. This spring, select A. Phillip Randolph students are painting a mural for the new Whole Foods Market in Harlem and participating in the creation of a video documentary about the impact of the prison system on the families and friends of the incarcerated. David and his wife Ronette are the proud parents of five-yearold Theodore and three-year-old Cassandra. When not at work or playing with his children, David enjoys working with local charitable organizations.

OMMUNITY We have the deepest gratitude to the individuals and businesses that have helped make this event, and more important, the coming year of our work possible. It is only with the support of our community that we can sustain and expand the breadth and depth of our services. Our supporters join us in helping NYC youth to frame a future that is inclusive, joyful, and full of possibilities. Thank you for being a part of it.

There are many ways you can get involved. Commission a work of public art. Contribute. Sponsor a program. Volunteer. Any way you choose will make an immediate impact. More than 74% of CAW’s revenue goes to direct program expenses. Each and every contribution makes a tangible difference.

Andrew D. Levin President and Chairman

Last year, Creative Art Works celebrated its 30th Anniversary. It was an appropriate time to look back. But even then, we were already talking about our next 30 years. Tonight seems like an appropriate time to frame our future. Our year is off to a good start with the addition of Daniel Bergman as Program Director. Daniel has an impressive background in art, education, and administration. We are thrilled to add his experience and insight to our talented and indefatigable team. I am also pleased to welcome our 2016 honoree, Neil Goldmacher, to our board, and I want to thank Eric Withrow for assuming the role of Secretary. I have said that CAW Board membership can help to define a person, and I am honored to serve with such a dedicated and talented group of people. Finally, I am moved by the generosity of our donors and the commitment of our volunteers, without whom our work simply could not happen.

26

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are grateful for the selfless contributions of tonight’s Benefit Cochairs and Honorees. I wish to thank our long-standing supporter Glen Weiss for leading our fundraising effort this year, and I am pleased to recognize David Fanning as our Educational Honoree. As Principal of our program partner A. Philip Randolph High School, David has championed many successful CAW in-school, after-school, and youth employment programs. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate all the things that make Creative Art Works special — our kids, our Youth Apprentices, our staff and teaching artists, our program partners, and all the supporters who make our work possible. Yours truly,

ENABLING DIVERSE EXPERIENCE “ I think this is an amazing way for me to know if my students are really understanding the literary elements of the story. ENABLING DIVERSE EXPERIENCE “There’s more to art than art, if that makes sense. Some images speak to people. It can be very controversial or it can be very meaningful, but if you can relate to it... art is poetry” Jhoan Castellanos CAW Youth Apprentice on the Public Art Youth Employment projects “Muralmorphosis,” “Harlem Sunrise,” and “Art of Jazz.”
