Dear Friends,

I look back over our achievements and am struck by the extraordinary commitment of so many people. We at CAW have always been like a family. I am also fascinated to observe, as we change, how much we stay the same; I believe that is because we have remained steadfast and true to our mission. For the past 28 years, our kids and their communities have always come first and art has been inextricably linked to great teaching and community service. All you need to do is meet some of the young people and the community partners we serve and you’ll understand why – we are so very fortunate to be able to joyfully bring art into their lives. Last year, the theme of our event was “An Invitation to Reach New Heights” – well, we did just that in Harlem from river-to-river, up to Washington Heights and Inwood and around the City! We ran 20% more out-of-school time programs and engaged 36% more youth in our Public Art Youth Employment programs, all while enhancing the quality of our services. While our growth is important to try to meet the ever-growing needs of our population, we are much more focused on the depth and relevance of our programming. Arts education passionately explores what motivates each child to learn, and its impact includes unlocking a love of learning. Our students and youth employees

learn to keenly observe, personally envision, creatively explore, humanely express, engage and persist, and to reflect upon, and most importantly, influence, the world around them. CAW has evolved over the past five years and this transformation is gathering momentum as we have strengthened staff and enhanced programming. As we aim even higher in 2014, we celebrate this year’s benefit theme, “Together, creative art works…” We have proven outcomes of positive social and emotional skills and improved job, academic and technical performance; our youth are more civically engaged, better prepared for college or career, and have more confidence in themselves and optimism about their future. We could not do all this without you! Today, as we proudly unveil our new name Creative Art Works, our essence and promise are unchanged: to empower youth through the arts and to teach kids and young adults the power of creativity and their own voices. Together we are strong - our established pedagogy, the care and heart of our teaching artists, the passion of our leadership, our dedicated grass roots with local community partners, and the strong engagement of our supporters. In addition to providing life-saving services to our constituents and their families, they also employ thousands of New Yorkers and help keep our economy strong and growing. They also serve as key allies in our efforts to create a more equal and just New York City, where everyone, regardless of what borough they are from or what neighborhood they were raised in, has access to the support and services that they need to move ahead and build better lives for themselves. This work wouldn’t be possible without the help and support of our city’s nonprofit community, and I would like to thank CAW and its amazing staff and volunteers for all the wonderful and inspiring work that they are doing to help empower young lives through the arts.

Artist Author, Murals of New York City

John has worked with Cushman & Wakefield, Inc. for 43 years with the first 30 years being spent in the downtown office of C&W where he was the leading broker for 20 consecutive years. During his tenure, John has made numerous contributions to the C&W organization by serving on the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, the Global Management Team and the Compensation Committee. John also created and chaired the Brokerage Advisory Board. John has been engaged as both broker and consultant by many of the world’s leading corporations, financial institutions and law firms. He has consistently been among the top five producing brokers within C&W worldwide over the past 30 years and is recognized as one of the top real estate professionals in the country. John leads a team of eight professionals and they have represented and concluded some of the largest transactions in Manhattan including Moody’s corporate headquarters relocation to Seven World Trade Center, construction of the CIBC World Markets Building at 300 Madison Avenue and the relocation of Nomura Holding America Inc. from downtown to Worldwide Plaza.

Over the years, John and his wife Jane have been involved with a number of charitable institutions throughout Manhattan; most recently, John received the Good Scout Award from the Greater New York Councils of the Boys Scouts of America. John and Jane are avid golfers, art collectors, supporters of the arts and sponsors of the Metropolitan Opera. John was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He recently served on the Board of Trustees of Wilkes University and was Co-Chair of the Capital Campaign Committee for development of the new science and engineering center.

Glenn Palmer-Smith is a painter and muralist whose career has also spanned photography for Time Life Books, fashion photography in New York, Paris and London for Cover Girl and Revlon, Mademoiselle, Marie Claire, and Vogue, and art direction for Sports Illustrated. For twenty years, he ran his own agency representing photographers in New York City before closing the business to return to painting. His work has been seen in dozens of shows around the country and resides in the corporate collections of Deutsche Bank and the Korean Bank in NYC and private collections of Kevin Kline and Kim Cattrall. His mural work includes commissions for preeminent interior designers, the Christopher Newport University in Virginia, and the loving restoration and extension of the famed murals at the Café Carlyle and Bemelmans Bar. Glenn’s first studied art with the renowned Lucienne Bloch, best known for her murals and for her association with Diego Rivera. He went on to earn a BA from Central Michigan University, an MA from Wayne State University, and an MFA from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. He also studied at Bellas Artes de Mexico in San Miguel de Allende, home to work by renowned Mexican muralists Davíd Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera. He has taught art at the junior high, high school and collegiate levels.

Murals of New York City is a dream of Glenn’s that was six years in the making. Created with photographer Joshua McHugh and with an introduction by Graydon Carter, it was released by Rizzoli in 2013 and has since been featured in the New York Times Sunday Book Review, Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, and on Channel Thirteen’s Metro Focus and the Today Show, among others. The book is now in its second printing, and Glenn is maintaining a busy lecture schedule while beginning work on his next book and creating several murals. Glenn and his wife Silvia enjoy spending a portion of each year in her native Italy. He is the proud father of two grown sons, a passionate cook, and enjoys riding his Harley Davidson Sportster year-round.

NYC Family Court Recognized Program Partner

“Excelsior” In 2010, CAW was introduced to NYC Family Court through Columbia University administrator Justine Blau (who later joined our Board), asking if we could help beautify the walls of the court at 60 Lafayette. Rather than just installing murals, we developed a programmatic relationship, wherein youth create art that is both personally cathartic and inspiring to those that must journey through the halls of the court. Since such time, CAW has empowered dozens of young people, including those who have been formerly incarcerated or are at risk to the violence of gangs and guns, by creating this powerful restorative and social justice platform through the visual arts, in partnership with Children’s Aid Society’s Lasting Investments in Neighborhood Connections (LINC), NY Mission Society, Operation SNUG, Artistic Noise, NY Presbyterian Hospital, the NYS Office of Family and Children Services and others.

While employing youth to interact with court staff, and to learn to convey its message of hope to other young people in crisis as well as those that work there daily to address such struggles, CAW’s teams have created four large-scale works that are permanently installed throughout the courthouse: installation art inspired by Tibetan prayer flags (2011), a collaborative mural “Pride” celebrating Gay Pride Month (2011), “Excelsior”, a diptych banner inspired by the court’s emblem (2012), and last summer a canvas triptych on the overarching of theme of Justice Restored entitled “There is Hope,” “Ascending to Leadership” and “Balance Freedom” (2013). Other murals created within our restorative justice initiative include those at 1285 Avenue of the Americas and The Doe Fund.

Judge Richardson-Mendelson was appointed to the NYC Family Court bench by Mayor Bloomberg in January 2003. She served as a trial judge in Queens County Family Court until February 2008, when she was appointed Supervising Judge. In May 2009, she was elevated to Administrative Judge in charge of all NYC Family Courts. Judge Richardson-Mendelson served as a Court Attorney-Referee in Queens County Family Court presiding over child protective proceedings from July 2001 until her appointment to the Family Court bench. Prior thereto, Judge Richardson-Mendelson practiced law for ten years as a member of the Assigned Counsel Panel, representing parents and children in NY County Family Court. She also served as the very first staff attorney for the Sanctuary for Families Center for Battered Women’s Legal Services and was an attorney with The Legal Aid Society-Bronx County Civil Division, where she represented indigent clients in Housing Court and in benefits entitlement proceedings.

Judge Richardson-Mendelson graduated from the CUNY Law School, Queens College, in 1988, earned a Master of Philosophy degree in Criminal Justice from the CUNY Graduate Center in 2000, and a PhD in Criminal Justice from the CUNY Graduate Center in 2002. A life-long resident of the Bronx, Judge Richardson-Mendelson is married to Dean RichardsonMendelson, Esq., a Court AttorneyReferee in New York’s 9th Judicial District, with whom she enjoys coparenting their wonderfully blended family of daughters, sons and nieces.

Robert E. Selsam Lifetime Achievement Award Formerly of Boston Properties Robert Selsam retired in January 2014 after 29 years with the New York office of Boston Properties, where he oversaw all of the company’s New York operations, including development, acquisitions, leasing, and management. Robert now has his own real estate consulting company. Prior to joining Boston Properties, he was Director of Planning for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He previously served in several positions at the New York City Planning Commission/Department of City Planning, lastly as Director of the Transportation and Regional Planning Division.

Robert is a past Governor of the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) and Chairman of its Transportation Committee. He also serves on the Board of the New York Building Congress; is past Chairman of the Board of the Salvadori Center, an educational non-profit that encourages students’ interest in math and science; is Trustee and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Phipps Houses, a major provider of low and moderate income housing in New York City; and serves on the Advisory Board of Goldman Family Enterprises. In 2000, ABO named Robert Developer of the Year. He is also the 2006 recipient of the George A. Fox Humanitarian Award from the New York Building Congress and the 2010 Chairman’s Award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy. Robert is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, with a major in economics, and holds a Masters Degree in Urban Planning from the Columbia University School of Architecture.

Since 1986, our mission has always been the same: to bring the transformative power of art and self-expression to kids and communities in Upper Manhattan. Like any organization, we’ve grown and evolved in the past three decades; we are now poised to serve a broader set of young people with a broader set of services than ever before. And, we want the world to know what we can now do, so we’re changing our name. We’d like to introduce ourselves:

Creative Art Works Our new name says what we believe and what we do. It’s meaningful, even if you don’t know us. It’s short and memorable. It’s as active and energetic as we are. And, we are still CAW.

With a new name that works so hard for us, we have the opportunity to introduce a visual identity that does the same. Inspired by our diverse community that works together to create change, by the grid and skyline of our home city, and by the symbols that help us find our way through the world, we developed a logo that tells a story…

… Of the vision, craft, and inspiration inherent in creativity…

… O f the life skills,work skills, joy, and confidence we develop…

Our new logo visually says who we are. It’s striking. It’s modern. And, as all of our programs do, it hides a smile. Can you spot it?

How we change the world Since 1986, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been at the forefront of change within our urban communities, empowering young people through arts programming that incorporates academic enrichment, creative expression, workforce development and community engagement. We put creative art to work, helping young people develop the personal and professional skills that will meaningfully shape their futures for the better. Our programs serve 5,000 under-resourced New York City youth each year, through inschool and out-of-school-time classes, community art-making events, and youth employment creating large-scale public

art. They teach valuable technical and developmental skills, while creating profound connections between our young constituents, their art, and their communities. Students are never charged for participation in our programs. Creative Art Works is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

Out-of-School Time ArtWorks

Young adults 14-24 years old are given full-time summer jobs and part-time jobs after school to create large-scale public art in Manhattan, starting with the initial planning down to the final brush strokes and public unveiling. They gain tangible employment skills as well as general life skills such as leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and the power of taking initiative. By the end of the program, our young artists feel empowered seeing the permanent accomplishment that is their mural and its positive impact on the community.

CAW provides youth-oriented, interactive art-making projects in the context of larger public events with partner organizations. Workshops and public art tours are designed to engage youth with their community and to allow them to experience and celebrate the power of art. Our largest Community ArtWorks program is the celebrated Giraffe Path, an integral part of the annual “Hike the Heights” celebration.

CAW’s growing in-school programs, new as of 2012, aim to mitigate the removal of arts education from NYC public schools by providing an arts-based or integrated curriculum during the school day. Professional teaching artists collaborate with school teaching staff and administrators to help them meet mandated arts education requirements and align lesson planning with core curriculum, with demonstrated impacts on school attendance and performance. Curricula are designed in keeping with the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and the New York City Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts.

Afterschool ArtWorks A free, semester-long after-school program where students are paired with professional teaching artists to learn artistic, technical, and developmental skills in the creative area of their choice, from topics including Mixed Media, Photography, Urban Design, and Multimedia PSAs. A culminating project concludes the semester — kids present their work to teachers, artists, peers, and family allowing them to practice goal setting, public speaking, and self expression. Saturday ArtWorks Free programs in multiple venues throughout Upper Manhattan providing safe, creative and engaging drop-in environments for youth ages 4-14. Focusing on the 4C’s: creativity, cooperation, communication, and confidence, the literacy-based programs help kids develop social and problem-solving skills, self-expression, and artistic skills while creating a rewarding project.

Our staff

Brian Ricklin, Executive Director & CEO Brian Ricklin has been the full-time Executive Director and CEO of CAW since 2010, a role he stepped into after serving on its Board of Directors since 2007. He brings extensive experience in economic and strategic development, board management, and involvement in the arts, philanthropy and community service to bear on his leadership. Prior to serving CAW full time, Brian spent over 25 years in real estate portfolio management, acquisitions & dispositions, asset management and capital markets. He is the founder of Real Estate Acumen, a principal real estate investor and a real estate investment manager and advisory firm. Mr. Ricklin was Senior Director and Global Head of Asset Management at Marathon Asset Management, an alternative investment advisory firm, directing the $4.5B in real estate and real estate operating company investments in the Marathon Real Estate Opportunity Fund portfolio. Mr. Ricklin takes great pride in his corporate philanthropy and, with respect to his assets under management, the grass-root

Karen Jolicoeur, Director of Development commitments and local community service of his various partners and operating properties. Since his formative childhood years, Brian has maintained three simple principles that brought him to CAW: empowerment through creativity, grass-roots community service and volunteerism, and leadership as a fiduciary. During his teens, Brian developed a love of the arts and integrated all forms of interdisciplinary studies during his undergraduate career. Brian’s leadership of CAW is dedicated to best practices and the quality and expansion of all its social ventures and programrelated investments. He has brought CAW recognized, tangible and innovative results in development, board management, strategic planning, and programming impact, including achieving top ratings for fundraising efficiency, revenue growth and program expense growth. Brian’s responsible for CAW’s recent capacity-building, including attracting new talented program and development staff.

Karen Jolicoeur joined CAW as Director of Development in late 2012, and has enjoyed working with Brian and the Board to enhance communications and outreach, to develop infrastructure, financial reporting and metrics, and to diversify and strengthen sources of support. Karen has wide-ranging experience in nonprofit fundraising, business, and the performing arts. Prior to joining CAW, she was the development consultant for the Bronx Arts Ensemble, a multidisciplinary art organization in its 40th season, . During her time with BAE, she helped the organization diversify its funding base, increasing support from foundations, corporate and government sources, and overseeing a dramatic increase in individual giving. Ms. Jolicoeur transitioned to development from a career in business, where she was previously the General Manager and Director of Shareholder Relations for Starlite Media LLC. Starlite, which Ms. Jolicoeur helped to build from the ground up, is an outdoor advertising

company specializing in place-based, at-store media in major markets nationwide. Prior positions include those at Citibank’s Corporate Realty Services and at MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings in the corporate finance department. Ms. Jolicoeur made the move to development work to merge her corporate experience with her passion for the arts and arts education. A classical singer, she has performed in concert, recital and opera around the US and abroad, and at several notable venues in NYC including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. As a frequent performer of new music she has appeared numerous times with the Center for Contemporary Opera. She holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory and a Bachelor of Music in Opera from the Hartt School. Ms. Jolicoeur lives with her husband and two children in the Inwood neighborhood of Upper Manhattan, where she is an active member of the community and a member of the Executive Board of the Parent-Teacher Association of PS/MS 278, Inc.

Anthony González, Program Director Anthony González joined CAW in April 2013 as Program Director with years of experience in art education, fine arts and commercial illustration, bringing exciting new ideas to our programs. Originally from the West Coast, Tony has lived and worked as an artist, illustrator, muralist and educator from his studio in Washington Heights for the past thirty years. Tony personifies CAW’s mission with a steadfast commitment to youth empowerment through the arts, as a grass-roots activist and as a consummate professional in leading the creative direction of the organization and pedagogy of our arts educators. Tony’s teaching experience includes an array of art classes for a wide range of students and media. He worked for many years with elementary school children as a studio artist for the City School District of New Rochelle; in both New York City and Connecticut, he has taught teen studio art classes and mural painting, and a variety of life drawing classes and workshops for adults, including at the Riverstone Senior Center in Washington Heights. An artist recognized by the uptown arts community and many of our

community partners, Tony has painted two murals for New York Presbyterian Hospital. His work has also been in numerous group and one-man shows including the Cork Gallery at Lincoln Center and the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance. His political drawings have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, the New York Daily News, and The Nation; retail clients include Joe Boxer Sportswear and Lloyd’s of London. Tony’s education also illustrates the depth and diversity of his artistic talents: communication arts at California Polytechnic University, illustration at The art Center College of Design, classical sculpture and plaster casting at Venice Studio School, anatomy at UCLA and anatomy, sculpting, oil painting and pastels at The Art Student’s League in New York. A recipient of the Edward G. McDowell Travel Grant, Tony is the only person in the long history of this prestigious award to receive it based on a portfolio submission consisting exclusively of drawings. Tony lives with his wife Susan, the Associate Director of Admissions at Columbia Business School, and is the proud father of Phoebe, a theater major at Northwestern University.

Jabari Owens-Bailey, Office Associate

Shannon Moran graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2011 and has since led multiple mural projects throughout NYC and participated in and managed various scholastic-based programs.

Jabari Owens-Bailey is an artist, curator, and educator who was born and raised in Washington, DC. He received a BFA from Corcoran College of Art +Design and an MFA from School of Visual Arts. As an undergraduate, Jabari was selected to study sculpture at the University of Georgia’s semester abroad program in Cortona, Italy. He has completed a Curatorial Fellowship at Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA) and a residency with the Laundromat Project’s Create Change program. He maintains an active studio practice.

Shannon joined CAW in 2009 as an intern for the Summer ArtWorks program and has grown within the organization as teaching artist, Program Coordinator, and now serves as Program Manager. She enjoys applying her knowledge, skill and experiences as an artist and educator to complement and enhance CAW’s mission of empowering youth through the arts.

He began with CAW in the summer of 2012 as a Teaching Artist Assistant working with CAW’s summer youth employment program. In addition to supporting the administrative and marketing needs the CAW office, Jabari is now a CAW Teaching Artist.

Creative Art Works strives to put young people on the path toward better futures by teaching them that their voices matter; that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not powerless, but powerful beyond measure. Our programs serve 5,000 young people each year. They offer every participant a safe place to go, adults who respect and listen to them, mentors that love and support them., and a community that celebrates their courage to create and is inspired by their creations.

Participants gain personal, technical, creative, and workplace skills that translate directly into better academic participation and performance and serve them beyond the classroom. Our program participants graduate high school, secure jobs, go on to college, and work to improve their communities.

Measuring our progress

In 2013, we further enhanced our sustainability with a greater diversity of earned revenue sources as well as higher donor retention, the addition of new donors, and increased investment from our stakeholders.

We ran 20% more out-of-school time programs and engaged 36% more youth in our Public Art Youth Employment programs, all while enhancing the quality of our services.

I’ve been involved in the leadership of CAW for over 15 years and Chairman and President for the past three years, 2013 and 2014 being years of capacitybuilding. It is an honor serving at the pleasure of the Board and it has been a delight to partner with Brian Ricklin, our CEO and Executive Director, maintaining the integrity of our mission of youth empowerment through the arts and investing time and resources in the long-term sustainability of our transformative organization. While we literally have served tens of thousands of young people, we know there is no shortage of need for arts education and youth development in the communities we serve and frankly throughout the City; today we celebrate the positive impact of our work, one life at a time, as any child we serve can change the world; each supporter of CAW can therefore change the world for one student or, many. Our Board has evolved with exuberance with the support of our talented staff over our recently developed program metrics and enhanced marketing and communication, offering new technical expertise, financial support and management supervision. Karen Jolicoeur, our Director of Development, has also significantly helped to diversify our revenue, including building our earned revenue, while better engaging our various foundation, corporate and government

stakeholders, program sponsors and community contract vendors. Our programs have matured with the on-boarding of Tony González, our Program Director who joined us just a short year ago and the promotion of Shannon Moran, our Program Manager, with enhanced community partnerships, staff professional development and outcomes objectives, exciting artistic direction and streamlined operations. The theme of this 5th Annual ArtWorks Benefit for Kids, “Together, creative art works…,” is so personal to me as none of this would be possible with you! The Board of Directors and I are so very grateful for the vital contributions of tonight’s Benefit Co-chairs and Honorees, who have generously invested their time and resources to support our mission.
