About Summer ArtWorks

Creative Arts Workshop 4 Kids

Founded in 2005, Summer ArtWorks (S.A.W.) is a summer jobs program that hires underserved New York City youth to create high-quality public art that enriches their lives and communities. CAW employs these burgeoning young professionals directly, in collaboration with social service partners, and with the support of NYC Department of Youth and Community Development’s Summer Youth Employment Program and NYS Office of Children and Family Services’ restorative justice programs.

Creative Arts Workshops for Kids (CAW) is a 27-year-old nonprofit that improves the lives of Northern Manhattan youth through the use of the visual, performing and technology arts. CAW for Kids serves over 5,000 participants annually with after-school and Saturday workshops and full-time and part-time jobs in the arts, teaching valuable technical and developmental skills while creating profound connections between our young constituents, their art and their communities. Students are never charged for participation in our programs.

Welcome to the AXA Equitable Center!

“The murals will give the people working here something to look forward to.” - Hassan Johnson (787 7th Avenue securtity guard)

The building ownership of AXA Equitable Center at 787 Seventh Avenue has invited CAW back this summer to create a second work of public art for its iconic lobby, also home to a monumental Pop Art painting by Roy Lichtenstein. This year’s mural is inspired by NYC history and the Industrial Revolution, honoring 787’s place in the urban landscape and a homage to the adjacent Lichtenstein Mural with Blue Brushstroke. This summer’s and last year’s work will rotate through the corporate collection. AXA Equitable Center Summer ArtWorks Employees Arkue Johnson Candra Carter Carmen Miranda Chrisopher Mitchell Oscar Chavez Rawnak Ahmed Tiffany Gamboa Vena Lewis

“They’re making beautiful art and they have talent” - Radhames Almanzar (787 7th Avenue security guard)

“Art is a breath of fresh air.” - Hasan Johnson

“In the beginning I was nervous because I thought I was going to be judged for not knowing how to paint well, but it is more about painting and putting in effort and creativity. - Tiffany Gamboa (Summer ArtWorks Employee)

Mixing paint is more challenging than it looks.

Summer ArtWorks Employees, along with their Teaching Artists, are hard at work to finish the murals at 787 7th Aveune.

Next stop... Riverbank State Park!

In partnership with New York State Parks and Recreation, Riverbank State Park has commissioned two CAW mural teams to design and paint six large-scale diptychs. With input from the community, the paintings will reflect the wide variety of recreational, competitive sports, and arts experiences available at the park for all ages, and abilities. Final work will hang in the aquatics, cultural and athletic facilities. “I am usually an artist alone in my studio, so working with a lot of people by my side has been exciting“. - Andrea Bergart (S.A.W. Teaching Artist Assistant)

Here are the Summer ArtWorks Employees painting the murals that will be hung inside the aquatic and cultural centers at Riverbank State Park.

“I have seen a big change in the participants because they have become more confident with their artistic abilities.” - Joel Bergner (S.A.W. Teaching Artist)

“Art has definitely caught my interest now.” - Fredy Reyes (Summer ArtWorks Employee) “Our favorite part of doing the murals is really when you are on the wall and you get to talk and get to know people.” - Corina Kingery (S.A.W. Teaching Artist Assistant)

COMPLETED MURALS

We Came, We Saw, We Documented... Say hello to the Media Team at 601 Lexington Avenue!

“Justice Restored” is the theme of CAW’s fourth and largest public art collaboration with the NYC Family Court. Longtime CAW supporter Boston Properties has graciously provided their vibrant Atrium Shops and Cafes at 601Lexington Avenue as a public art-making space for the Family Court mural team. This mural will address restorative themes including peace, hope and patience.

The SAW Media Team This year CAW has expanded the SAW program to include a youth led media team. Compromised of 5 young adults selected from SYEP provider, NYC Mission Society, the SAW Media Team is facilitated by Teaching Artist, Amanda Adams-Louis and Teaching Artist Assistant, Tristan Nelson. The media team youth are learning multi-media production and post-production skills; creating still and moving images of our mural teams in action and producing a book and documentary about the SAW program.
