TECH WHY TIRES ARE SO IMPORTANT The only touch point a bicycle has with the road is the tires. The experience of a bicycle ride is therefore largely influenced by a tire. How do tires make a difference? Most importantly by enhancing safety through grip and puncture resistance. But tires can also absorb shock and reduce rolling resistance which leads to a faster and more comfortable ride. And all this has to do with casing. CASING: THE HIGHER THE TPI, THE BETTER THE RIDE The most important factor in determining a tire’s effect on a bicycle ride is the fabric used to construct its casing. A fabric with a fine, dense weave produces a softer and more flexible casing. Flexible casing provides more grip due to more contact with ground. Flexible casing provides more comfort due to absorbing more shock. Flexible casing provides more speed due to low rolling resistance. The density of the weave is expressed in threads-per-inch, or TPI: the greater the TPI count, the finer the thread and the denser the weave. Therefore the greater the TPI count, the more flexible the tire.

COTTON: MOST FLEXIBLE CASING Cotton is incredibly strong and incredibly thin producing casings with the highest possible TPI. Not only does this bring the rider the most grip and the most comfort, but it also brings the most speed. This is because high-TPI cotting casings need less rubber in the tread which causes most rolling resistance. There is no faster tire than a high-TPI cotton casing tire, like Vittoria Corsa CX.

new NEWEST TECHNOLOGY: DIAMANTE RADIALE Vittoria has expanded its nylon casing technology with radial casing. Radial casing is different to conventional casing. The cord plies of radial casing are set at 85° to the direction of travel (from bead to bead) making that the cords deform freely as the tire flexes. In conventional casing, the cords overlap diagonally to the direction of travel, causing more friction between the two plies. Due to the direction of the cords, the tire gains flexibility resulting in more comfort and grip. Due to flexibility, the width of the tire is reduced by 1mm making it a lighter, more aerodynamic and therefore faster tire. Radial casing is the premium of nylon casing technology, exclusive to Vittoria’s Diamante tires.

TECH CASING CORESPUN Vittoria’s unique Corespun casings are the product of years of experience, clever R&D, and advanced production technology, proven by millions of kilometers of racing. The basis material is made of superfine polycotton threads. These threads have a polyester core overspun with cotton. This dense weave is then encased in latex. Corespun casings differ in thread size and additive content, according to intended use. Corespun 320 TPI is the industry’s most advanced polycotton casing, made of the a new, finer, stronger thread that requires no added Kevlar®, allowing cotton’s uniquely supple and resilient quality to shine through. Corespun K 320 TPI has an admixture of Kevlar® threads for casings where strength is of the essence, as in our Pavé tubulars and tires. Corespun T 320 TPI utilizes the finest thread available, exclusive to Vittoria. This special 320 TPI fabric makes for the lightest, supplest and faster casing ever, capable of withstanding the extreme pressures needed for track and crono tubulars. COTTON 220 TPI Cotton is the traditional material of high-quality racing tubulars. Vittoria produces casings in the finest grade of natural cotton, 220 TPI, for a range of top-class tubulars for road and track, in every size. NYLON Nylon is a robust and durable artificial fibre used by most manufacturers for utility tire casings. Traditionally, it lacked the flexibility of the polycotton casings preferred by élite riders but was lighter in weight than polycotton threads. Now Vittoria has succeeded in engineering nylon yarn into our exclusive Nylon Plus 220 and 150 TPI weave, setting a new standard in each class of clincher tires. Weight is cut by 10% over the previous best nylon casings, while road feel and rolling resistance approach closer to the top-performing polycotton open tubulars. For wet or rough roads, decrease by 0.5 bar (7.5 psi). For tubular tires, increase by 0.5 bar (7.5 psi) Ideal tire pressure is subject to many variables such as road surface, weather conditions, bike materials and setup, rider's weight and lastly, riding style. The best way to fine tune ideal tire pressures is field testing a variety of different pressures. One method is to use a short criterium style circuit, preferrable with a variety of corners. Start with the suggested pressure and ride a lap. Each following lap, lower the pressure by 5psi until you feel the tires start to "wallow" or move a bit. This is your lowest pressure point. Return to the above table pressures and raise 5psi each lap until the tires start to bounce and skip/move across the surface. This is your max pressure. Decrease by 5 psi from here until you feel you have the best pressure for the conditions. Keep a tire pressure log, including road surface, technicality of the course,weather conditions, tire type, brand, and TPI. Finally, the bike you used and your weight on that day. Over time, this log will become a valuable tool for referencing tire pressures and road conditions in order to optimize your performance when on race day.

TECH TUBULARS There’s no mystery about tubulars. The inner tube is fully enclosed by the casing, which is secured to the wheelrim by glue. By contrast, a clincher is open – the bead at the opening hooks on to the inside of the wheelrim to secure the casing. Technically, a tubular is a toroidal form – think of it as a very skinny donut. The outer surface carries the tread, which may be attached to the casing by vulcanising – a mechanical process– or glued by hand. Hand-gluing avoids the high temperature of vulcanising and, though expensive, is preferred for top-quality work. The tubular is completely round in section – we say it has a constant casing radius. This gives it two big advantages over the clincher.

Turn-in to a corner is predictable, with no sudden transitions in grip; and shock absorption is better because road shocks are spread over the entire base of the wheelrim, reducing rolling resistance. The rider can hold their line into a corner and roll smoothly over even rough road surfaces – a familiar sensation to all professional cyclists. Another advantage of the tubular over the clincher is that it can take a much higher inflation pressure. The comfort of a clincher degrades when it’s pumped up hard, even if it can sustain the pressure. In sum: riders of tubulars like them because they feel better to ride and they’re faster. Clinchers have the advantage of convenience, but tubulars deliver the best road behaviour and remain the first choice of top riders.

TIRES/CLINCHERS The familiar pneumatic tire consists of three parts: casing, tread, and bead (plus, usually, an inner tube). Casing is made of a fabric coated with rubber. Nylon is the fabric most commonly used. The number of threads per inch (TPI) gives an idea of how finely woven the fabric is, and how the supple the casing is. The casing fabric of Vittoria’s top tires is a mixture of polycotton and aramid fiber exclusive to Vittoria. Tread provides the contact with the road surface. A high-performance tread compound is a mix of rubber, silica (SiO2), carbon black, and other proprietary ingredients. For extra performance, Vittoria’s top tires utilize a compound with an admixture of finely-chopped Kevlar® fibers. Tread pattern depends on the tire’s intended use: from slick for dry, smooth surfaces, to grooved for wet, rough ones.

Bead hooks into the clincher rim, anchoring the tire securely in place once the inner tube is inflated. It may be rigid or foldable. A rigid bead is a wire bundle, while a foldable bead is made of aramid fibres – lighter and easier to fit than rigid. Folding tires are also easier to store and carry. Most Vittoria tires also have a puncture-resistant belt (PRB) of nylon or aramidic fiber underneath the tread, where penetration by road debris is likeliest. For the toughest use, where sidewall damage is a risk, a protective layer stretches from bead to bead, or a specific nylon protection is added to sidewalls only (Tech versions).

BUTYL INNER TUBES

Butyl is a synthetic rubber derived from hydrocarbons that can be considered as “the standard” when it comes to tire and inner tubes manufacturing processes due to its very good chemical and mechanical characteristics (thanks also the the additives, like carbon black, added to the compound) Latex is a natural rubber that comes from nature (plant) even though there are now different synthetic latex “rubbers”. So what are the main advantages of Latex Vs Butyl or why should a rider choose the first over the later? Butyl rubber (normally black synthetic compound) is the most common inner tube material used They hold air well, don't lose much tire pressure for days are reasonably priced. Latex tubes are more elastic than butyl ones: if you take one of each you'll find the latex tube much stretchier. Not only that, they dissipate less energy when being stretched and unstretched, ie they have reduced hysteresis loss. This means the latex inner tube soaks up less energy than a butyl one while the wheel rolls along. helps you go faster by using less energy. The higher stretching degree also means that a latex tube will resist punctures better by deforming round the intruding object (nail, sharp stone etc) due to the higher elasticity of latex rubber latex inner tubes are also more resistant to pinch flats. In case of a flat normal patches work fine. Latex tubes have an affinity for rubber solution so they're easy to repair reliably. Latex tubes give also a slightly more compliant ride quality. From a “maintenance” point of view latex tubes lose air overnight faster compared to butyl ones due to the material’s porosity. Thanks to modern liquid sealants, you can find our more info by looking at our pit stop you can seal up the wall porosity thus getting zero air loss e added puncture prevention. Just as an added “tech” info a 1cm long butyl “sample” can be stretched up to 1,5cm before it breaks; the very same “sample” made out in latex can be stretched up to 7cm. Basically with latex inner tubes you get: • LOWER ROLLING RESISTANCE • IMPROVED PUNCTURE RESISTANCE • IMPROVED RIDE COMFORT
