CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN HISTORIC PRESERVATION Term project for class of the same name held at the Cleveland Restoration Society with Executive Director, Ms. Kathleen Crowther. The project involved a mock-proposal for state funding and historic designation status. “With every new project comes new challenges and hurdles to overcome, and the observatory is full of them. While there exists a methodology for turning this facility into a usable asset incorporating historic tax credits, grants, and corporate and private partnerships, let us begin by defining a vision of what this structure could be. To begin with the historic significance is great, being designed by Walker and Weeks who were responsible for Severance Hall, Cleveland Auditorium and the original Cleveland Public Library, the architecture is bar none with nearly, (see figure 6), all of its original exterior still intact.”
“This will enable the city to apply for the more meaningful state and federal historic tax credits that could see this project come to fruition. While the 106 process can be long and arduous, given the CLG grants as well as the myriad of professional historic nonprofits that exist in Cleveland, we would not have to do this alone.”
OHIO BALANCED GROWTH PROJECT A grant from the state of Ohio enabled academic and planning professionals the opportunity to come together and tackle urban sprawl. This was accomplished through a systematic review of subdivision regulations and tree canopy coverage to determine if there was a positive relationship between compact and “green development with home sales and construction.
IRISHTOWN GREENWAY: A STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THE FLATS WEST BANK A collaborative effort between students and planning professionals including the Ohio Chapter of The Trust for Public Land, this comprehensive planning effort outlined possible solutions for linking the Ohio-Erie Canal Towpath Trail with its final terminus at Wendy Park on Whiskey Island. Nationally recognized with the AICP 2015 student Award for Contribution of Planning to Contemporary Issues.
- “The many challenges that face any planning endeavor are certainly evident in Wendy Park at Whiskey Island, but we must remember that challenges are really just opportunities. In the case of Wendy Park, we have an amazing opportunity to create a meaningful destination, or capstone to the hundreds of miles of Tow-Path trails, as well as the years and years of planning, construction, and volunteer work that it has taken to get to this point.” Assisted with: • Literature Review • Existing Plan Research • Survey Design and Collection • Final Write-up for multiple sections
URBAN DESIGN Primary research combined with innovative solutions created the Cedar Avenue Power-House Redevelopment Project. As a term project this design focused endeavor sought to create a usable example of urban re-use using planning best methods and design elements.
EAST CLEVELAND CONNECTIONS Final project intended as a client ready product for University Circle Inc. This planning product included practical and innovative solutions highlighting, advocacy, service and development to help alleviate the distress and blight in East Cleveland caused by decades of decay combined with the housing crisis. “Leveraging the immense opportunities that exist within the framework of UCI and its various member institutions to the surrounding neighborhoods is no easy task. Luckily we live in the 21st century where new technologies and emerging organizing techniques are breaking down the barriers between information and action. One of the key components of advocacy, or equity planning, is giving a voice to those who are often not heard or under-represented. “
INTERNSHIPS Multiple internships, summer programs, as well as teaching and research assistantships have served to create a well-rounded “real-world” learning experience. Through collaboration and mentorship with various planning agencies, non-profits, and volunteerism a realistic and sustainable planning approach has been developed.
