NO STONE LEFT UNTURNED:
SECLUDED BEAUTY ON LAKE JOSEPH
By Olivia Lay
In the heart of Muskoka’s Lake Joseph, where nature’s beauty meets unparalleled luxury, this architectural masterpiece redefines the concept of a lakeside retreat. Welcome to a secluded beauty on Lake Joseph, where every detail has been meticulously considered. From the initial vision to the final brushstroke, this eight-bedroom, ten-bathroom residence shows the extraordinary level of care and dedication taken in its design. Every inch of this property, from the placement of each beam to the selection of each material element, speaks to a commitment to excellence.
This is not just a home;
it’s a testament to the art of thoughtful design, where every decision was made with the utmost intention. The planning of this estate was not merely about constructing a house; it was about creating an experience, a space that would resonate with both its natural surroundings and the human spirit. The architects and designers poured their expertise and passion into ensuring that each feature serves a purpose while also contributing to the overall aesthetic harmony. The result is a home that feels as though it has always belonged to this land, yet embodies the best of twenty-first-century style.
part and the estate comes into view, you’re struck by the elegant Corten steel structure, which seems to rise organically from the landscape. The synergy between the home and its surroundings is immediately apparent; this is a place where modern design and natural beauty coexist in perfect harmony.
Set on two acres of pristine land, the property boasts 465 feet of southwest-facing, hard-packed sandy shoreline – an impressive stretch that offers both complete seclusion and breathtaking views. The crystal-clear waters of Lake Joseph gently lap against
the shore, immersing you in the serenity that only such an exclusive location can offer. Here, low boat traffic ensures that your peace and privacy are preserved, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the tranquil mood.
As you approach the entrance, the expansive breadth of Lake Joseph unfolds before you. Stepping inside, you are instantly struck by the warmth of an interior wrapped from ceiling to wall to floor in honeytoned wide-plank Russian white oak. The open-concept design, with its 11-foot ceilings and floorto-ceiling windows, paints the full
interior in natural light, blurring the division between indoors and landscape. Other details continue this sense of elegant duality: exposed beams throughout the interior and exterior exemplify “modern rustic” design, a blend of sophistication and comfort that is simultaneously timeless and contemporary.
The main level of the home is an entertainer’s dream. Modern conveniences, such as fully automated systems that allow you to control the home’s environment at the touch of a button, make living here as effortless as it is luxurious. A two-sided fireplace divides living and recreational areas, creating intimate spaces for gatherings while maintaining an open flow. Adjacent to the living area is a movie room, perfect for cozying up for a film night.
The kitchen, the heart of the home, is as aesthetically pleasing as it is practical. Richly textured cabinetry blends seamlessly into the walls for a cohesive and minimalist aesthetic. Gaggenau appliances are integrated throughout. Warm wood tones on the ceiling and floor contrast beautifully with cool, industrial elements such as metal accents

and dark, streamlined countertops. Welldesigned lighting, from the ambient glow overhead to the focused pendant lights, enhances the inviting atmosphere. Just off to the right of the kitchen, the butler’s pantry continues this design theme, offering additional storage and preparation space with the same high-end finishes.
One of the most striking features of the home is the Muskoka room. This openair space, connected to the main living area through a three-panel sliding door, epitomizes indoor-outdoor living. Floorto-ceiling retractable screens allow you to enjoy nature’s beauty while remaining comfortably sheltered. Here, you’ll find a
custom concrete fireplace, a pizza oven, and ample seating for dining and relaxation – perfect for hosting summer gatherings or simply unwinding after a day on the lake.
The primary wing, located on the west end of the upper level, is its own private retreat within the home. This recently updated space includes his and hers offices, each with its own bathroom; both rooms provide the perfect environment for focused work or quiet reflection.
The primary bedroom is a sanctuary all to itself, where floor-to-ceiling windows offer stunning lake views, bathing the room in natural light and providing a constant connection to the outdoors. (When desired, a push-button control deploys automatic privacy shades for complete seclusion.)
The rich, dark accent wall that anchors the room adds a touch of drama, setting off soft wood tones and crisp, white bedding.
Every element, from the grand architecture to the smallest design detail, has been carefully considered, to create a home that is as functional as it is beautiful.
The ensuite bathroom is a spa-like oasis; warm wood panelling and sleek concrete surfaces conjure an earthy, yet luxurious ambiance – from the elongated vanity with its dual sinks and minimalist black fixtures, to the freestanding soaking tub, with its lush, tranquil view of the landscape beyond the floor-to-ceiling window. Elegant details like the exposed steel beams and soft ambient lighting complete the mood of private sanctuary.
Just a short stroll down the path from the main house, the three-slip boathouse offers an additional 650 square feet of living space. Its lower level features a large deck, seating area, and a fully equipped wet bar, perfect for lakeside entertaining. Whether you’re catching a game on the TV or simply enjoying the company of friends, the wet bar includes all the essentials: two bar fridges, an ice maker,
microwave, dishwasher, and sink. Upstairs, a bedroom and bathroom provide a private retreat for guests, while the sprawling upper-level deck offers unparalleled views of Lake Joseph. The architectural continuity between the main house and the boathouse, with shared design elements like exposed beams, creates a cohesive aesthetic that enhances the overall charm of the property.
The property is also a haven for those who crave an active lifestyle. The engineered-sand volleyball court, blacktop basketball court, and professional home gym ensure that you can stay active and entertained without ever leaving the grounds. Here also,
functionality and aesthetics are always in perfect balance.
The integration of cutting-edge technology, from the home’s fully automated systems to its high-tech security and water systems, ensures that living here is as effortless as it is luxurious. Yet, even in its modernity, the home never loses sight of its roots – its connection to the natural beauty of Lake Joseph and the rich history of Muskoka.
As the sun sets over the lake, casting a golden glow across the water, it’s easy to see why this property is the epitome of Muskoka living. Every element, from the grand architecture to the smallest design detail, has been carefully considered, to create a home that is as functional as it is beautiful. This is a place where cutting-edge design meets the tranquility of nature.
In a world where true craftsmanship and thoughtful design are increasingly rare, this property stands as a beacon of what is possible when no stone is left unturned. This is more than just a home; it’s a masterpiece, a secluded beauty on Lake Joseph that promises to leave a lasting impression on those who are fortunate enough to experience it.

Seasonal Design Trends: In Living COLOUR!
Whether you go for bright wallpaper or just a few animal print pillows, this season's decor is predicted to be more personal – and simply put, more fun – than it’s been for a while.
MARTHA
The wooded hills of Muskoka aren’t the only things that will be ablaze with colour this season: the design forecast for the colder months ahead calls for a fullscale return to colour for interiors as well. It’s all part of a welcome return to personal expression in our interiors – and a readiness to finally let go of safe white and grey and beige with everything.
But don’t panic if you’re not quite ready to give up low-key shades and neutrals just yet; they will always be there. Perhaps the biggest change is that after a few years of cool greys, the pendulum is swinging back towards warm tones: creamy whites, oatmeal, beige and tan, Simply White instead of Chantilly Lace. The swing from grey to beige seems to occur in design every few years, and often acts as harbinger to a return of colour across the spectrum.
bedroom as part of the overall design of a room. “We carry Phillip Jeffries Wallcoverings, who produce beautiful pieces. It’s like artwork for the wall,” says Roossien.
Robin Wood of The Cutter’s Edge in Huntsville observes that shades that have a connection to nature seem to be leading the colour parade: browns, tans, mossy greens, steel blue (rather than navy). It’s part of a larger trend strongly influenced by nature that includes plentiful potted indoor plants (both natural and lowmaintenance fakes), along with natural textures such as wood grain, veining and rough textures in stone and its various lookalikes, and the full range of natural fibres.
Light paint colours are still prominent in design, with a movement towards warmer, earthier tones. According to Tary Roossien of Cassis Design Studio, Benjamin Moore’s Dove Wing is a great option. “Wallpaper is becoming an important material and can personalize spaces, whether used to add interest to a smaller room like a powder room, or as an accent wall in the primary
More than we’ve seen for many years, individual personality and expression are king when it comes to how we live and decorate our homes. We want to infuse our spaces with elements and pieces that have meaning for us, whether it’s mixing favourite thrift store finds with investment pieces, adding family pieces that we’ve loved since childhood, or mixing periods and styles freely, simply because we want to.
The main rule is that there are no rule s.
“You really want to avoid the hotel-lobby, anonymous look,” says the design team at Elizabeth Interiors in Burlington. “People are really thinking about selfexpression in their homes. Maybe it’s the result of Covid, when we were all stuck at home, but personal expression and pieces that mean something to you are key. As designers, we want to know what’s near and dear to you and start with that.”
One of the most extreme expressions of the move towards both self-expression and exuberant colour and pattern is Maximalism, an almost theatrical trend where more is gleefully more: bright fabrics, busy patterns, ornate furnishings and finishes, every conceivable surface crowded with objects and interesting accessories. Another trend, sometimes called Dark Academia, features dark, moody interiors, inspired by Parisian coffee bars or Victorian smoking rooms.
But if that sounds just a little extreme for your tastes (at least at the cottage), there are plenty of ways to add colour and personality in subtler ways. As one of the Elizabeth Interiors designers suggests, try painting a single accent wall, or even the ceiling. Done in steel blue, lavender or even clear yellow, a painted ceiling makes a bold statement without being too in-yourface about it. Or update pieces you already own with bolder accents, like a cranberry sofa with a bold animal-print pillow – animal prints are all the rage in Europe this year – and place it in front of an accent wall in a rich jewel tone like jade or smokey sapphire.
Braden Vallery of Huntsville Design Centre suggests that starting with pieces you already own and love, or working with existing features like a great view, is another great way to add both colour and individual style. “I recently designed a lakehouse that had a great view of a cliff directly across the water,” she says. “We used the rust and pink granite of the cliff and the colours of the view to naturally inspire the design.”
Another Elizabeth Interiors designer shares, “Along with colour, we’re seeing a strong trend towards dealing with walls in a more complex way. Mouldings, mirror, and wallpaper are also big. It’s not only textures, but also finishes like limewash, Venetian plaster, and other treatments. All of these things elevate a plain wall.”
“As designers, we want to know what’s near and dear to you.”
The upcoming season offers more opportunity for personal expression than we’ve seen for some time.
In fabrics, “Textured fabrics: chenille, chunkier weaves and shapes like rounded pillows are big right now,” notes Vallery. “We’re seeing that in textures on hard materials as well; heavily patterned granite surrounding a fireplace, for example. We’ve also been doing a lot of ‘raw edges,’ such as live-edge wood tables, and also rough, unfinished edges on stone tables, for a very personalized look.”
“I’ve really been seeing wood grain coming back,” says Roossien, “in floors, furniture and to finish vertical surfaces like walls. It’s about the ‘authenticity’ of the wood.” In both traditional and modern settings, white-painted wood is giving way to mid-tone stains that add warmth and highlight the grain. Alternatively, wire brushing might bring out the natural grain even in a painted surface, or different cuts (such as plain-sawn or rift-sawn rather than quartersawn) or species of wood are then stained to highlight their unusual texture.
Interestingly, several of our design experts believe that some of last year’s biggest trendmakers in furniture design – notably, mid-century-modernstyle curves, bouclé and "that ’70s look” – may have had their day. As Robin Wood notes, “The ’70s look may be big in magazines, but I don’t think a full-on ’70s look
is relatable in many interiors. Instead, we’re seeing it in colours, and also in accents: pillows, accessories, artwork, rugs.”
Instead, Wood sees softer, lower-pile textures like linens and more classic tailored silhouettes as being more newsworthy right now. Additionally, reeded-wood surfaces on cabinetry and wall panels, which have been popular in recent years, are transitioning to more squared-off or subtly rounded edges.
That’s consistent with a trend Vallery is seeing in architecture and furniture design in general. “We’re seeing more organic lines in architecture, such as arched doorways, softer curves in furniture, and even organic, abstract designs in rugs.”
Whether you’re ready to take it to the max and fill your home with high-spirited colour and pattern, or prefer to start with a few bright pillows and maybe a colourful rug and then move on from there, the upcoming season offers more opportunity for personal expression than we’ve seen for some time.
“With fabric and décor, we’re seeing richer colours, richer textures and saturated tones,” says Tary Roossien. “I love that we’re seeing layers of colourful spaces again.”
Come Sail Away
TO PARADISE ON BVI!
A chance encounter on a sailing vacation led to the discovery of an exclusive new resort development that just may be like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

Steve Haddock happened to be on vacation in the British Virgin Islands recently when he stumbled across something that was unlike anything he’d ever seen in Canada – or anywhere else in the world really, as he tells the story.
“I was truly shocked that a place as sophisticated as this existed in the BVI”
“We were on a sailing trip with friends and staying at a yacht club near the BVI island of Virgin Gorda,” he recalls. “One day, we were laid up onshore because of high winds and decided to explore the island a bit. We turned a corner and came across this incredible vacation community.
“I was completely astonished at how beautiful it was,” he continues. “Here was this community of villas and homes featuring world-class architecture, stunning views and firstrate amenities and services for its residents. And the whole thing was designed with a strong sense of harmony with the environment of the British Virgin Islands, which is one of the world’s great unspoiled natural places.”
The amenities at this exclusive resort paradise, Steve notes, are also impressive. There’s a private marina where residents can purchase a private boat slip; local shops and restaurants; a well-equipped wellness centre with a wide range of options from tennis and pickleball courts to a fitness centre; a spa, a nature centre, medical centre, and even a kid’s club.
communities are notable for their unique beauty, attention to detail and emphasis on harmony with the land and its ecology. Many of these properties have received major recognition from international entities including the Urban Land Institute and others for their environmental excellence.
Impressed by Cayman’s expertise as a vacation property specialist in Muskoka and elsewhere, with value-added services such as our exclusive buyer qualifying services and premium-quality magazine, the developers decided to join forces with Cayman to offer selected properties in this exclusive BVI community to our clients.
“I was truly shocked that a place as sophisticated as this existed in the BVI; most properties here are more rustic,” Steve says. “But it still has that great casual lifestyle and friendliness you find in the BVI. There’s also a great golf cart and ATV road network that allows residents to travel around the island.”
Sensing an opportunity, Steve immediately got in touch with the director of sales for the development. He discovered that it’s the brainchild of an internationally renowned developer whose award-winning luxury

OF THE SEASON
Bringing Family Together Through Food
adventurous eaters, eager to try something new but equally happy to enjoy our tried-and-true favourites.
In our busy lives, weekday meals need to be quick and simple, but that doesn't mean they should compromise on flavour. I believe that cooking with seasonal, local ingredients is essential—not just for the best taste and nutrition, but also to support our local growers and farmers.
As we embrace the colder season, I'm excited to share a few of our family's favourite recipes. I hope you’ll try them and enjoy these dishes with your loved ones as much as we do.
Radicchio & Fennel Salad
SALAD INGREDIENTS:
• 1 head of radicchio - washed, dried and torn into large pieces
• 1 bulb of fennel - trimmed
• 1 small beet (if using, sliced thinly)
• 1 firm Bosc pear, washed, halved and cored
• 100 g Gorgonzola or any soft blue cheese
• 1/4 cup toasted pecans or walnuts
DRESSING INGREDIENTS:
• 3 tbs olive oil
• 1 1/2 tbs red wine vinegar
• 1 tsp Dijon mustard
• 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
• 1 tbs honey
• Salt & Pepper
SALAD DIRECTIONS:
1) Using mandoline or very sharp knife, slice fennel and pear into thin slices.
2) Arrange radicchio, fennel and pear beautifully on a large serving platter (we eat with our eyes first!).
3) Scatter the nuts and blue cheese over the salad.
DRESSING DIRECTIONS:
1) Combine all ingredients in a jar with tight fitting lid and shake until combined and creamy (or in a bowl, then whisk until emulsified), adding salt and pepper to taste.
2) Drizzle dressing over the salad and serve it on its own as a first course, or alongside any meat or poultry.
Breaded Chicken with Tarragon Sauce
CHICKEN INGREDIENTS:
• 4 skinless boneless chicken breasts
• 1/2 cup flour
• 2 eggs
• 1/4 cup milk
• 3 cups plain breadcrumbs
• 1 tsp dried oregano
• 1 tsp sweet paprika
• Salt & Pepper
• Lemon wedges for serving
• Vegetable oil for frying
SAUCE INGREDIENTS:
• 1 tbs butter
• 1 tbs olive oil
• 2 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped
• 200g mushrooms (any one of these or a mix of - cremini, oyster, portobello, shiitake, porcini)
• 1 cup heavy (whipping) cream
• 1/4 cup chicken stock
• 1/4 cup vermouth or white wine
• 2 tbs chopped tarragon
• Salt & Pepper
DIRECTIONS:
1) Prepare chicken cutlets by slicing each chicken breast in half lengthwise (you’ll end up with 8 cutlets). Between two pieces of plastic wrap, pound chicken breasts to about 1/2 inch thickness. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
2) Next prepare your breading station - you’ll need three shallow dishesfill first dish with flour, then add paprika and oregano. Mix to combine. Into second dish, crack the eggs and add milk. Whisk to combine. Into the third dish, add the breadcrumbs.
3) Working one at a time, place each cutlet into the flour and coat both sides, shaking off excess. Next, dip it into the egg, making sure it’s fully covered, letting the excess run off. Lastly, place the cutlet into the
breadcrumbs; coat both sides, gently pressing the breadcrumbs into the chicken. Place on a baking sheet and repeat with the remaining cutlets. Let them rest for about 10 minutes before frying.
4) In a large skillet, heat the oil (I use 1/2 cup). Test it if it’s ready by dropping a few breadcrumbs into it; if they sizzle straight away, the oil is ready. If they sizzle loudly and burn, then lower the heat.
5) Place cutlets into the oil, a couple at a time (depending on the size of the pan and cutlets); try to avoid overcrowding.
6) Fry until golden on both sides, 3 to 4 minutes per side, using tongs to carefully place cutlets into the pan.
7) Transfer the cutlets to a wire rack to drain. Repeat until all of the cutlets are done, adding a few tablespoons of oil if necessary.
8) To prepare tarragon sauce, start with heating the oil and butter. Add chopped garlic and mushrooms. Stir a few times, then add a bit of salt and pepper. When mushrooms release their moisture, stir them and let it evaporate until the mushrooms start to brown. At that point, add vermouth (or white wine); it will sizzle! Let it cook for a minute, scraping the bottom of the pan, then add the cream and chicken stock. Lower the heat to medium and simmer the sauce until it thickens; finally stir through chopped tarragon and remove from stove.
9) To serve, pair the chicken with your favourite sides (mine are mashed potatoes and spinach), then top with the sauce for an ultimate indulgence.
Puff Pastry Plum Galette
• 1 thawed sheet puff pastry dough
• 1 lb plums (I use golden ones, but Italian purple ones are also great)
• 3 to 4 tbs sugar (this depends on the ripeness and sweetness of the fruit)
• 2 tsp lemon juice
• 1 tsp lemon zest
size of the plums, half, quarter or slice them, removing the stone. Toss with lemon juice and zest, sugar, salt and cornstarch.
• Good pinch of salt
• 1 tbs cornstarch
• Sliced almonds (if using)
• 1 egg
DIRECTIONS:
1) Preheat oven to 400°F.
2) To prepare puff pastry: Cut the thawed dough into four 5X5 inch squares.
3) Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using a sharp knife, score the dough all around 1 inch from the edge (do not cut all the way through).
5) Arrange the fruit into a mound in the centre of the square. There will be some juice in the bowl; spoon a small amount over the fruit (not too much so it doesn’t spread all over the edges). Sprinkle a few sliced almonds over the top.
6) In a small bowl, whisk the egg. Lightly brush the egg over the edges of the pastry, then sprinkle with sugar.
7) Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and plums are tender.
8) Let rest for a few minutes (the hardest part is waiting!).
9) Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and a dusting of powdered sugar.
