DOODLING OUR WAY TO A BETTER WORLD At the Cayton Children’s Museum, we encourage young people to DISCOVER their purpose and identity, think critically, act generously, practice compassion and empathy, and promote kindness for a more just, equitable world.
THE DOODLE BOOK ... is a culmination of our core teachings, featuring a collection of “doodles” handdrawn by aspiring artists, little creators, big imaginations and tomorrow’s leaders, alongside some of ShareWell’s very own grownups. Each piece is special not just for the artist who created it, but for the donor that helped to underwrite it through their generous support. If you flip through each doodle, you will find a special message from the artist on what inspired their work of art or, perhaps, just whatever was on their mind that day. That is the beauty of imagination. We hope this book reminds you of the importance of creativity, especially in these times. Doodle on, friends.

2o2o DISCOVERY AWARDS A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR & CEO To Our Supporters, Friends & Colleagues, Thank you for joining us for this year’s Discovery Awards in support of ShareWell, the heart and soul behind the Cayton Children’s Museum and youTHink, our youth development initiative. Tonight, we are celebrating and honoring four deserving individuals: Susan & Robert Rovner and Chelsea & Kevin Washington. In saying yes, they have demonstrated their selflessness to step up as honorees in a year that doesn’t look like any other, and we are so grateful to them. We also want to thank our 2020 Event Committee—along with its fearless leader, Carl Freed.—and this year’s major supporters, which include: Vinny & Tori Smith and their Teach a Man to Fish Foundation, Clancy Collins White and Dean White, Macerich, Andrea & Barry Cayton, Jennifer & Curtis Cohen, Jean E. Hide-Cohen and NBCUniversal. To our Board of Directors, our extraordinary staff, our members and visitors, and to each of you here tonight who give generously, we are profoundly grateful. You are the reason we remain strong. Thank you. While the pandemic has changed how we work, it hasn’t changed what we do. When we first closed our doors in March, after eight months of extraordinary growth in our new home at the Cayton Children’s Museum in Santa Monica Place, we were— like you—in disbelief that the world was shutting down. We acted quickly, making difficult but critical decisions focused on the long-term future of ShareWell. We knew that our place in community and in nurturing children to become the best version of themselves would be as important to our recovery as it was to our creation. We asked ourselves how we could show up for families now. We struggled, we experimented, we took risks, we made mistakes and through these months of striving forward—we started to evolve into a better institution. So, our museum doors may be closed, but we remain open for this community in new and innovative ways. Our programming continues to evolve and grow with bi-weekly Cayton Creators outdoor programming, offered at no cost as our gift to the community and to eliminate all barriers to participation. We have created art kits that we are starting to distribute to families that have been impacted by this pandemic the most through partnerships with public libraries and non-profit organizations. Our virtual programming has come to life through puppet shows, art classes, storytelling, reflection, multicultural celebrations and more. Our virtual field trips, which combine live and digital content customized for groups of students, are being offered to Pre-K through elementary schools. 4
YouTHink, our youth development initiative that brings the arts into schools and underserved communities, is rethinking how it supports and engages youth. In fact, our new virtual curriculum has allowed us to reach new communities of students. In youTHink’s Filmmaking Fellowship, student filmmakers, working alongside accomplished filmmakers, are creating films on social issues that cover the spectrum from discrimination and voter suppression to climate change and immigration. In youTHink’s Student Ambassador program, students are learning how to step up as leaders for their peers and advocate for change in their schools, neighborhoods and communities. Each day offers a new opportunity for us to adapt and leverage our ability as a young institution to stay nimble and responsive to the ever-changing needs of a community and world that are still trying to figure it all out. As O. Fred Donaldson said, “Children learn as they play.” Most importantly in play, children learn how to learn. In this way, play is the foundation by which all children learn how to become responsible contributors to society. Today, ShareWell is taking a page out of its own playbook to learn how it can play a meaningful role in society while practicing what it means to be the best version of ourselves. We can’t possibly know all that we need to know about tomorrow—about when we will welcome visitors inside our doors again. But what we do know is that the role we play in community—including bringing the creative arts into homes and communities that too often get left behind during a crisis—is significant. And we need to do ALL that we can as creatively and passionately as possible to lift this community—our community—when it’s needed most. So, you ask: Are we open? I’d argue we never closed. With gratitude and respect,
ANDY KAPLAN

2o2o DISCOVERY AWARDS
A LETTER FROM THE EVENT CHAIR To Our Virtual Attendees, I am extremely honored to be the chairperson for this year’s Discovery Award Dinner honoring Susan and Robert Rovner and Chelsea and Kevin Washington. I would like to thank the gala committee for all of their hard work and also Carly Harrill and Sean Morris for their tireless efforts in making tonight’s virtual gala the most financially successful of any Discovery Awards to date. Now that our election is over, this is the time for national healing and finding a way for every citizen in the United States to re-discover what the American Dream truly means. My personal goal for 2021 is to help wherever I can to return to fact and sciencebased discourse. But it’s never too early to start … There are 5,280 feet in a mile. FACT Water boils at 212 degrees and freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. FACT The Earth was created more than 6,000 years ago. FACT I am incredibly inspired by my wife Jennifer and my adult children Savannah and Trevor Freed. FACT The Cayton is the first museum of its kind in Los Angeles. FACT youTHink helps inspire students in Title 1 schools to find their voices and become leaders in their communities. FACT YOU can help change the world by taking an active leadership role with children and youth of all ages. FACT
6
I am proud to be part of an organization that nurtures young people to become responsible. compassionate and conscious human beings who work together toward justice to make the world a better and more equitable place. FACT In 2021, the Cayton Children’s Museum will re-welcome families into a warm, safe and friendly environment where we can once again discover, in person, what life is like when play becomes a way for our children to practice being generous, to practice being accountable for one another and to practice their capacity as leaders. FACT The road to recovery will be a long one with plenty of roadblocks and milestones along the way. This is life. We will need to be patient and compassionate to help each other navigate a new path toward a new normal. But that’s why places and institutions like ShareWell and the Cayton Children’s Museum exist. They help us to connect, to find our community and inspire us to always work toward something better—not just for ourselves but for those we may never even meet or know. This is the future we are advocating for by being here tonight. And it’s worth protecting. That’s a fact. Thank you,
CARL FREED EVENT CHAIRMAN, 2020 DISCOVERY AWARDS BOARD OF DIRECTORS, SHAREWELL

THANK YOU Proceeds from the 2020 Discovery Awards will help to advance public programming and access initiatives at the Cayton Children’s Museum and its youth outreach program, youTHink.
ShareWell has inspired creativity in the Los Angeles community for more than 30 years, nurturing young people to become responsible community members with the ability to positively shape the world. Through experiential learning and the creative arts, we guide children, youth and families to work together toward justice and expanded possibility in their communities and beyond. Our vision is manifested through the Cayton Children’s Museum, where imagination, play and creativity foster connection and creativity in “littles” to help them develop their identities. Purposeful play is then put into practice through youTHink, ShareWell’s youth arts initiative that works with youth in their schools and communities to ignite activism through creative expression.
Debuting in summer of 2019, the Cayton Children’s Museum has become one of the country’s premier children’s museums and one of Los Angeles’ anchor arts and cultural institutions. The “Cayton” is designed to bring ShareWell’s social impact vision to life through immersive play and values-based programming that fosters connection and creativity for children and their families. A reimagination of the former Zimmer Children’s Museum, the Cayton offers 21,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, public programming, arts education classes, camps, field trips, cultural festivals and more in the heart of Downtown Santa Monica. Before its temporary closure due to COVID, the Cayton had welcomed 132,845 visitors in just its first eight months of operation, including 7,700 low-income families who were waived admission as part of our “We All Play” Initiative. Caytonmuseum.org
youTHink is ShareWell’s long-running youth arts initiative that works with young people in their schools and communities to ignite engagement and activism through creative expression. The program was founded in 1992 shortly after the opening of the Zimmer Children’s Museum to use the arts as a catalyst for improving youth outcomes in some of the highest-need neighborhoods in Los Angeles. We began partnering with Title 1 schools to implement classroom programs that gave middle and high schoolaged youth—a population not served within Museum walls—access to high-quality arts education, leadership training and opportunities for civic engagement. Since then, youTHink has grown to empower more than 2,500 students to be active participants in shaping their communities, while giving them the self-confidence, resources and soft skills necessary for educational and lifelong success.
