LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR “ SUCCESS ISN’T JUST ABOUT WHAT YOU ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR LIFE; IT’S ALSO ABOUT WHAT YOU INSPIRE OTHERS TO DO.” ‒ANONYMOUS As director of the Scholars Academy, I have the privilege of inspiring the next generation of business leaders every day to make plans, take charge, dream big, and make a positive impact on their communities. Since day one, the Scholars have exceeded my expectations, whether creating and organizing lesson plans to teach financial literacy to middle school students, planning a business competition for high school students, or engaging in difficult upper-level courses as early as freshman year. They have earned impressive internships at many businesses across Omaha, traveled abroad to places like Hong Kong and Ireland without knowing a soul at their destinations, and maintained impressive GPAs and leadership positions in organizations across campus. Did I mention that the oldest cohort is just beginning their junior year? Needless to say, I am proud of the work the Scholars have accomplished and excited to share those accomplishments with you. Inside these pages, you will read about each Scholar, their leadership projects and how they’ve given back to the community, the challenging coursework they’ve completed, the mentors they’ve met through the Academy Coach Program, and much more. I hope you find their enthusiasm as inspiring as I do. Bethany Hughes Director, CBA Scholars Academy

HISTORY An honors program specifically for business students was the long-time vision of Dean Louis Pol and College of Business Administration faculty. With the help of private financial support, that dream became a reality. The first director, Bethany Hughes, was hired in June 2014. To better reflect the goals of student growth both inside and outside the classroom, the program was named the College of Business Administration Scholars Academy. Recruitment for the Academy began in fall 2014. The first freshman cohort of 20 students arrived in fall 2015, with two additional cohorts added in fall 2016 and 2017. The Academy will be at full capacity with four cohorts beginning fall 2018.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS
ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES
From September to January, the Academy recruits high school seniors to apply for the next year’s freshman cohort. Interested candidates must submit:
During the selection process, the committee looks for incoming freshmen who would most likely demonstrate the following traits if chosen:
A RÉSUMÉ This should demonstrate commitment to the community and school through volunteer service and extracurricular activities
AN ESSAY This essay should exemplify writing abilities and career goals
THREE LETTERS OF REFERENCE These letters should endorse the applicant’s teamwork and leadership skills
A committee of Academy staff, CBA professors, and CBA advisors reviews all applications. The top 40 applicants are invited to Mammel Hall for a day of interviews in late February. During Interview Day, candidates attend a formal lunch, participate in a group interview with a faculty member, have a one-on-one interview with a business professional, and work on a group project with other candidates. From that pool, 20 are selected and invited to join the next freshman cohort.
COMMITMENT » CBA Scholars are committed to their education and put forth their best work in the classroom, challenging themselves while expanding their knowledge. » They are committed to their future and make those investments now. » CBA Scholars are committed to each other and participate enthusiastically in the program.
PASSION » Passion is giving more than what it is required. Individuals carry their passion differently; sometimes it’s loud, sometimes it’s not. No matter the style, it means going the extra mile.
GENEROSITY » Because others believe in the program and make investments in it, CBA Scholars are given many perks— including scholarships, mentorship, and other unique opportunities. Scholars are expected to pay-it-forward by being generous with their time and their talents.
CHARACTER » Scholars want to make the world a better place, not just for themselves, but for others as well.
INITIATIVE » CBA Scholars are go-getters. They don’t wait for others to make their dreams a reality.
APPLICATION TIMELINE

OCTOBER 15, 2017 The application opens for the 2018 freshman cohort at cba.unomaha.edu/scholars.
FEBRUARY 1, 2018
Application closes at midnight. Late submissions, including letters of recommendation, are not accepted.
FEBRUARY 17, 2018 The top 40 applicants are invited to Interview Day.
SCHOLARS ACADEMY COURSES As part of the Academy, Scholars enroll in small, specialized courses. The cohort courses combine community engagement, guest speakers, case studies, research, and international travel to enhance the educational experience for students who want to be challenged within a close-knit community.
CBA SCHOLARS ACADEMY SEMINAR Instructor: Bethany Hughes Fall (Freshman Year): In the fall, freshmen in the CBA Scholars Academy enroll in a zero-credit hour seminar course, taught by the Scholars Academy director. This course provides Scholars the opportunity to learn about their Gallup Strengths, network with other CBA Scholars and staff, and create strategies for connecting with business professionals.
SUSTAINABILITY Instructor: Jonna Holland, Ph.D. Fall (Freshman Year): One of the fastest growing influences on businesses and organizational decision-making is the concept of sustainability—meeting the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. The primary objective of this course is to provide students with a firm understanding of sustainability and the framework of the triple-bottom-line: balancing the needs of People, Planet and Profit. Students hear from a variety of sustainability experts and read a wide-range of current sources to learn how these issues affect business strategy and consumer decision-making.
MICROECONOMICS Instructor: Jamie Wagner, Ph.D. Spring (Freshman Year): Microeconomics is an introduction to economic principles, decision making, and policies affecting product and resource markets. Particular emphasis is on price, output and input decisions by individuals and firms under various market conditions and it is an introduction to the fundamentals of international trade.
Jamie Wagner, Ph.D. teaches the freshman cohort Principles of Microeconomics in the spring semester. In the course, the students wrote a research paper and gave a presentation, taking one side of a social issue while thinking and writing like an economist. The cost of college, immigration, a lowered drinking age, and the economics of execution were just some of the topics the students explored.
In the 2017-2018 academic year, junior Scholars will enroll in Business Ethics, taught by Amy Rodie, Ph.D., and International Business, taught by Tej Adidam, Ph.D. International Business will conclude with a study abroad trip to Germany.
PRINCIPLES OF ACCOUNTING I Instructor: Jillian Poyzer Fall (Sophomore Year): Accounting 2010 covers basic concepts and assumptions underlying financial accounting; basic structure of accounting; the accounting cycle; external financial statements of the enterprise with emphasis on the corporation; income determination; accounting for and reporting of assets, liabilities and owners’ equity; analysis and reporting of cash flows; and financial statement analysis.
APPLIED LEADERSHIP Instructor: Gina Ligon, Ph.D. Spring (Sophomore Year):
FEBRUARY 23, 2018 Interview Day held in Mammel Hall.
MARCH 15, 2018
The course provides an introduction to applied leadership concepts and practices by providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to solve problems and make decisions as leaders. Studying, understanding, and improving leader problemsolving and decision-making is critical for leader effectiveness. The goal of this course is to help students develop effective leadership problem-solving and decision-making skills.
The top 20 applicants are selected and invited to join the CBA Scholars Academy.

SCHOLARS ACADEMY COACH PROGRAM The Academy Coach Program is a yearlong mentorship that matches Scholars to business professionals. These experts in their fields volunteer to be a part of the program, sharing their wisdom and knowledge with high-achieving Scholars at monthly meetings. With these connections, Scholars have a unique opportunity to learn directly from professionals by building meaningful relationships early and throughout their college careers. During the 2016-2017 academic year, the Scholars and Coaches met at a different company every month. These visits consisted of tours, relationship-building activities, a meal, and time for discussion.
McKenzie Bruce (2016 cohort) was matched with Colby Jensen, a Senior Associate II at BKD, LLP. She had this to say:
“ The highlight of the Scholars Academy has been being able to gain a real-life insight of what it is like in the business world. My mentor has impacted my life in such a positive way and has motivated me to succeed in school and strive to pursue my goals in and out of the career field.” At least nine Scholars said the Academy Coach Program directly helped them get a job or an internship. Karina Pisetsky (2015 cohort) was hired because of her Coach, Adrian Hernandez, senior vice president at Dundee Bank. She explained:
“ After he saw my résumé, he gave me a call and offered me a position at Dundee Bank—before we even met! I worked at Dundee Bank the majority of my sophomore year and absolutely loved the culture and management. It was a phenomenal job, and I’m excited to go back when I’m finished with my internship. The management at Dundee Bank continually cheers me on in all of my endeavors and is very supportive with my schooling.”
8
ACADEMY COACHES CAME FROM THE FOLLOWING ORGANIZATIONS:
Scholars give their Coaches a thank you gift at the Year-End Celebration on April 28, 2017.
Coaches and their Scholars enjoy breakfast at Dundee Bank in October. The Scholars visited 12 companies during the 2016-2017 academic year.

2015 COHORT CONTINUED “ Introduction to Microeconomics has been one of the most influential courses I have taken so far. Dr. Jamie Wagner pushed each of us to our limits during the semester, but I have never learned as much as I did in her class. Before taking her course, I thought I was destined to be an accounting major and was very convinced that nothing could change that. I had taken economics in high school, and, to be honest, I hated it. However, during Dr. Wagner's course, I began to see economics in a different way. I don't think I've actually enjoyed studying for a class as much as I did in Microeconomics. Dr. Wagner pushes her students to "think like economists," and she does a very good job of making us do just that. Thanks to her class, I'm now pursuing a concentration in economics.” DOMINIKA JEDINAK

APPLIED LEADERSHIP PROJECTS In the Spring Applied Leadership class, Gina Ligon, Ph.D., tasked the Scholars with selecting a cause for which they were passionate and finding a way to support that cause. With loose guidelines and ambitious goals, the students created seven projects that benefited organizations, students, and nonprofits. CAREER SKILLS WORKSHOP
WOMEN’S HYGIENE DRIVE
Four Scholars—Karina Pisetsky, Philip Faughn, Brianna Eisert, and Chris Winchester—created the Career Skills Workshop, held on April 28. Fifty high school students attended the event, which included workshops on interviewing, résumés, and work etiquette. The Scholars secured donations to cover the entirety of their $3,500 budget, allowing the event to be free for high school attendees.
Scholar Dominika Jedinak, along with University Honors students Anastasia Gardi and Arshia Alahi, held a women’s hygiene drive in the month of April. Through a GoFundMe page, a raffle, a class competition, and donation boxes throughout Mammel Hall, the group collected over than 200 boxes of feminine hygiene products, 84 toiletry items, 187 articles of clothing, and $355 in monetary donations. All items were donated to women’s shelters in the Omaha area.
GAMES FOR CHANGE
THE REFUGEE PERSPECTIVE
Games for Change—the project of Scholars Rhys Hansen, RJ Dechow, and Spencer Marxsen—was held on Saturday, April 29 in Mammel Hall. The charity board game night drew in 30 students, staff, and guests and raised $276 for the Nebraska Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Scholar Alyssa Wiese and University Honors student Amanda Greer created The Refugee Perspective, a student organization with the mission to promote openmindedness and build understanding among UNO students and the surrounding community about refugees. The organization's values are Connection, Inclusion, Respect, Compassion, Leadership, and Education.
SUICIDE STOPPERS RAFFLE Scholar Caleb Moyer, along with University Honors students Matthew Spicka and Andrew Roehr, held a raffle in spring 2017 to raise money for the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide (STPS). The students secured prizes like tickets to the Henry Doorly Zoo, UNO apparel, UNO men’s and women’s basketball tickets, an Amazon Echo Dot and more. The raffle raised $503.40, all of which went directly to SPTS.
DIVERSITY WEEK
SEW 4 SOULS Scholars Gabby Estivo, Emma Getzfrid, and Steph Freund created Sew 4 Souls, a workshop to teach college students to sew with the end goal of donating pillowcases to patients at Children’s Hospital in Omaha. They hosted two workshops on April 7 and had seven students and staff from UNO attend. On April 12, the Scholars delivered all 78 pillowcases, washed and ironed, to Children’s Hospital.
Diversity Week—the project of Scholars Adrienne Cavill, Sebastian Barbosa, and Victoria Eremeeva—was held the week of April 10. They set up a Diversity Booth in Mammel Hall, educating students about a variety of diversity topics. On April 12, they hosted a presentation on diversity in the workplace with speakers Rachel Flores from TD Ameritrade and Cammy Watkins from Inclusive Communities. Finally, on April 13, they ended the week with the CBA Diversity Dinner, which included speaker Nicholas Banks from UNO’s Multicultural Affairs as well as table conversation topics.

SUPPORT THE ACADEMY The Scholars Academy is only possible through private financial gifts, which fund scholarships, international experiences, and Scholar programming. Without these, the Scholars Academy could not invest in the lives of these high-achieving students. SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE Scholarships play an important role in recruiting and retaining the best business students. As one Scholar said, “I would have attended a different school if I didn’t receive the scholarships I have. I couldn’t afford to attend UNO without the generosity of our donors.” With this financial support, the Scholars are able to give back to the UNO and Omaha communities in real and tangible ways, whether that’s being president of a student organization, volunteering at Aksarben Senior Living, or engaging in a community service project. Each Scholar receives a minimum $2,500 annual scholarship, awarded over four years, for a total of $10,000—all of which are provided through private gifts. Our goal is to offer each Scholar a $5,000 annual scholarship, which will only be possible through additional gifts.
CBA SCHOLARS WIDEN THEIR HORIZONS International experiences are a vital part of a Scholar’s experience in the program. Studying abroad allows students to experience first-hand the dynamics at play in today’s increasingly connected world, all while making them more capable and more marketable to future employers. We are seeking sponsors to help support this lifechanging experience for our junior class.
EXPERIENCES ENRICH THEIR EDUCATION The Scholars Academy also provides activities designed to create camaraderie and teamwork within and between each of the cohorts through retreats, community service projects, and other scheduled learning opportunities. Without these activities, the Academy would be only a scholarship program instead of an immersive leadership development program.
