A story about courage, discovery and challenge I’d like to share with you an event this week which reminded me of the College theme and resonates with what we mean when we say CBC students are men of faith, excellence, community and compassion.

From The Principal WELCOME TO 2012 - DISCOVER, CHALLENGE AND INSPIRE It is my privilege to offer everyone a warm welcome to Christian Brothers College in 2012. This year marks the 250th birthday of our College Founder Blessed Edmund Rice and our 134th year as a College in South Australia.

I especially welcome all of our new families and students who began this week. At the Senior Campus Speech Night I announced the 2012 College Theme: Courage to Discover, Challenge and Inspire based on Psalm 31:24, Be strong and let your heart take courage.

I thank all of our new families for the courage they have shown in making their new start to College life at CBC.

At about 7.30am on Tuesday morning I visited the Cathedral to offer a prayer for the start of the 2012 academic year. As I knelt, I observed one of our students enter the Cathedral, light a candle and stay in prayer in front of the statue of Blessed Mary.

I was deeply touched that this student was a man of prayer, a man of quiet contemplation, a man for whom faith is an integral part of his life.

Dignity of Work

In our concern to study well, to get a good job, to be paid well and to be in a position of power, we may forget the dignity of work with our hands. We use our hands in the garden, in the kitchen cooking, changing the baby, mowing lawns, making repairs or painting, fixing a fuse or leaking tap, building a cupboard or laying bricks. In all such occupations we can be of service to others, be creative and be satisfied with what we are doing. It depends on our attitude or outlook to such work with our hands. It is good to recall that Joseph and Jesus worked together for many years as carpenters using their hands and no doubt took pride in their work. Peter and Andrew were fishermen, Paul a tent maker and Matthew a moneychanger. They worked using their hands. We too are called to work with our hands in various ways.

Many volunteers work with their hands. It is important to remind ourselves of the dignity of such work and the dignity of all those who’s daily work is done using their hands.

We congratulate 2008 graduate Erick Niyiragira who celebrated his first profession to priestly life last Sunday at St Paul’s Monastery. Erick lived in community with the Christian Brothers in 2009 and has since joined the Passionists with the support of Fr Kevin Hennessy cp and Fr Peter Gardiner cp.

STUDENT NEWS 2012 College Captain Jake Tollenaar attended the National School Captains’ Workshop at Rostrevor College during the holidays. Over 40 student leaders from across Edmund Rice Schools in Australia gathered for the annual workshop. It was a pleasure for Deputy Principal Shaun Clarke and I to host participants for a visit to the CBC Senior and Junior Campuses as part of their workshop.

CONCLUSION A YEAR OF GRACE WILL BE PROCLAIMED

BY THE BISHOPS AT PENTECOST In a letter to Catholic Principals, Dr Paul Sharkey Director of Catholic Education wrote: You will be aware that A Year of Grace will be proclaimed by the Bishops at Pentecost.

This year provides each one of us with the opportunity to discern how God’s life and action is present in the personal and communal lives we lead. Perhaps we could prepare for the Year of Grace by looking around now to see the goodness that is unfolding in our midst.

Our theme this year invites us to be a College community where there is a culture of reflection, contemplation, awareness and ‘presence’ to “Christ present in and appealing to us” in the people and events of our day.

From The Deputy Principal 2012 - COURAGE TO DISCOVER, CHALLENGE, INSPIRE Be strong, and let your heart take courage.

(Psalm 31:24) Firstly, I would like to welcome all new students and parents to our College community. This year our college theme is “Courage to Discover, Challenge, Inspire”. This theme was developed by the 2012 SRC Leadership Team and focused on us being a school community which moves beyond our comfort zone and challenges itself and society to be a place of justice and excellence.

The passage from Psalm 31:24 reminds us that God’s love gives us unfailing strength to be strong, to sustain the challenges we face every day and to be people who are nourished by God’s protection and guardianship to live our faith openly. This is the challenge to our College community this year.

We are all called to be leaders in the school. Leaders have the courage in their heart to be open to discover their calling to leadership and service; they are ready to embrace the complexity of being a model in our College community in both good and bad times and they let their love and courage shine, touching the hearts and minds of those they meet, inspiring them to follow in the footsteps of Christ. Deal and Peterson 1999 state that, “Schools run largely on faith and hope. Students and teachers don’t leave their humanity behind when they come to school. They need special moments in the daily grind to reflect on what’s important, to connect with one another, and to feel the common spirit that makes the technical routine more like spiritual communion.”

This “spiritual communion” calls us to be like Christ in our interactions with each other, to affirm our gifts and talents and open our hearts to the presence of Christ in our lives. Blessed Edmund Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers, was touched by the presence of God. Edmund brought into the day to day culture of his schools several features that tell us much about his approach to spirituality. At Mt. Sion, Edmund would have a bell rung on the hour and the entire school community would pause in what they were doing and recall the presence of God. In our world today there is a dearth of ‘presence’. We live such fast lives, lives that are so full of activities that schools can become frenetic places where we may find it difficult to truly feel connected,

Edmund was inspired by the message of Christ to live the Gospel values in his life. Our theme this year challenges us to be authentic to this message, to be people who search for truth and are willing to take risks to fully discover ourselves as humans in the image of God. Each virtue in our theme this year challenges us to look deeper into ourselves and see the presence of Christ in our college.

Instrumental Program CBC offers private instruction on the following instruments: piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, voice, drums, guitar and bass guitar.

Lessons are conducted weekly and the cost of instruction is $27 per lesson. On the teaching staff at CBC are some of Adelaide’s finest performers and educators. The forms for the instrumental program are available from the JS and SS Music Departments and the Finance Office. Places fill up quickly so please return form and payment early in Week 2.

This year has started with the return of many eager faces and the smiling faces of many new children. Welcome back to everyone. It was lovely to see all the Junior Campus students in the library for orientation and borrowing sessions this week.

In line with the library’s mission, for the children to become independent and confident library users, the boys were taught how to borrow books using the library system. They enjoyed using the scanner to borrow books to take home.

They will be experts in no time!

The Year 6 boys have been invited to nominate for Library Crew. The Library Crew are self-nominated students who assist with a range of jobs, including re-shelving, helping younger children returning books, processing new resources and generally helping in the library.

There are many exciting things happening in the library this year, including The International Year of Reading, Premier’s Reading Challenge, Book Week and a focus on Guided Inquiry.

There are many jobs in the library and if you are able to spare some time I would be most grateful for some parental help. I can be contacted at the Junior Campus Monday through Wednesday or via email cwilson@cbc. sa.edu.au.

We hope you will quickly feel at home and become involved in the activities of our school through the Parents and Friends Association, class representatives and your child’s classroom programmes.

Over the holidays we ran our very successful vacation care programme with children from both CBC and many other schools attending. I would like to especially thank Riandi Van Dyk (Director) and the CBC assistants for their excellent programmes that were fun-filled and very interactive. I thank the many parents who have enquired about starting before school care. I am delighted to say we are able to offer this service to all families.

A reminder to all parents that we offer BSC from 7.20 - 820am. The boys will be cared for and offered breakfast and the BSC staff will ensure any homework is completed if necessary. Any students that arrive before 8.05am will be ushered to BSC and parents will be billed accordingly. Staff members are not on duty until 8.15am and so it is a duty of care issue that all students whilst on campus are supervised.

Every Tuesday and Thursday we have parents/friends coffee mornings. This is a great way to get to know other families in the school. Often we have guest speakers that share information on a range of topics.

This year we also have our state-of-the-art tuck shop operational. Mrs Lisa Capoccia is the JC canteen operator and would love some support and assistance.

Please complete the volunteer assistance form sent home earlier in the week should you wish to help out. It would truly be appreciated.

Research shows that if students eat healthy breakfasts they attain better results at school. I am keen to start this at our Junior Campus several mornings per week.

If you or you have any contacts that could supply bread, cereal, milk or juice or would like to help coordinate this project I would love you to speak to me.

This year both the JC and SC dismissal time is 3.30pm.

We do apologise that this information was not conveyed earlier to you all to assist with collection of students.

It’s that time again and the preparation for Clipsal 500 has already begun. This will naturally have an impact on pick up and drop off with Parking on Wakefield Street.

Concrete barriers have started to be constructed on Wakefield Street and will start on 12 February on the Southern Side of Flinders Street/East Terrace, and East Terrace between Nil Street and Flinders Street. Due to the installation of over track signs on Wednesday 22 February and Friday 24 February, East Terrace and Wakefield Street will have restricted traffic flow from 8am on these days. The roads will remain OPEN but signage will ask for Local Traffic Only. Perimeter fencing will not be erected adjacent to the Junior Campus but green and gold webbing (spectator fencing) will be erected shortly after the positioning of the barriers. The southern side of East Terrace/Flinders Street will NOT be a public viewing area. Please do not hesitate to contact our Property Manager, Mr Graham Brink should you have any queries or concerns.

As I begin my second year as Assistant Principal Junior Campus, I will continue to work diligently with parents and staff to foster an atmosphere that promotes a learning community, characterised by child-centred learning, academic excellence and trust, respect, community involvement, open communication and recognition of both staff and student achievements.

I am committed, and look forward to working in collaboration with you, to continue to develop and implement this shared vision. Working together as a team we will move forward in our mission for this new school year to create a nurturing, dynamic, challenging learning environment in which all students can reach their full potential.

This year both the Senior and Junior Campus students will be dismissed at 3.30. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and the delay in conveying this information to you. The rationale for the change is that all the students have Pastoral Care time with their teacher and to facilitate class letters etc are being taken home and that the children have opportunities to review their day and reminders for the following day.

To our students already at CBC I ask that you reflect on your goals and not only pursue excellence but also demonstrate your perseverance and integrity by living out the college values of Faith, Community, Excellence and Compassion.

To our Parents, it is through your support that we make a significant difference in the lives of our students.

Junior Campus REC Coordinator Dear Family and Friends I would like to take this opportunity to welcome old and new families back to CBC for another school year. I trust that the Christmas period has been a time of much joy and celebration.

This Week’s Gospel is a timely reminder for us when we are overwhelmed and burdened by the fear that inhibits our living, Jesus is telling us to be true to our vocation whether it be married, single or devoted to God. Don’t waste time worrying about the injustices of the past but focus on the gospel message and let our spirit to be centred on love, compassion and forgiveness.

Jesus makes a deep impression within the soul of companions - he is not seduced by demons of any kind be it power, popularity, greed or whatever. When Jesus comes into the synagogue, his intention is pure, his teaching is authoritative, his power is of God. He then is able to bring peace and healing to those around him.

God is a God of infinite compassion. Even more than this, God understands the goodness of our hearts. If we, with our limits, can see beyond wound and struggle to a goodness that lies deeper within a human heart, how much more does God see out goodness, understand our struggles and forgives our weaknesses?

If we truly believe this, then we can let God walk with us through all the patches of our lives, however dark and perverse. Not believing it leads us to the religious mistake of all: We run away from God whenever we need him the most. It is precisely at those times when we have fallen, when we are morally impotent, bankrupt, struggling, and stand unclean with our sin on our hands, that we most, like a wounded child, need the embrace of a mother or father.

This week, let us give full sway to the Spirit of God in our lives.

SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM FOR 2012

If your son is interested in receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Eucharist and he is in Year 5 or Year 6 we would love to hear from you.

The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.’

MASS AND PRAYER SERVICES

Before School Care at CBC!

We would like you to contact the Junior Campus Reception to collect a form and complete the details including a copy of your son’s Baptism Certificate.

In 2012, in an attempt to be more inclusive all students in Year 5 and Year 6 will learn about these sacraments with the students who have been baptised Catholic will receive these sacraments.

Reconciliation Classes will commence midway through Term 1 and will conclude with the First Rite of Reconciliation on 25 May 2012.

From there, Confirmation and First Eucharist classes will commence midway through Term 2 and Term 3 and will conclude with a Confirmation Ceremony on 25 August and First Eucharist on 26 August 2012.

The Water Sports Auxiliary have organised supporter caps for staff, parents and friends to wear at CBC co-curricular events. This is a great way to support your son’s sport by wearing the purple and white caps.

Caps are available for $20 each and can be ordered through the College Uniform Shop.

Please support your son and the college by not just being at their sports activity but wearing the school colours.
