ANZAC Day ceremony at the Senior Campus

On Monday a number of student teachers who will be at CBC this term joined staff in a one-day professional development seminar led by our project partner Professor Martin Westwell. ANZAC Day They shall grow not old as we who are left grow old; Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them: On Tuesday all students in the Senior Campus attended an ANZAC Day ceremony in the courtyard. Army cadets in full uniform from a number of South Australian schools led us in the ceremony. On Wednesday many staff and students also participated in Dawn Services across the state: In a letter from Andrew Southcott MP we read: Many more people young and old are rising early to attend dawn services and honour our ANZAC tradition. The Dawn service observed on ANZAC Day has its origins in an operational routine which is still observed by the Australian Army today.

The half-light of dawn plays tricks with soldiers’ eyes and from the earliest times the half hour or so before dawn, with all its grey, misty shadows, becomes one of the most favoured times for an attack. Soldiers in defensive positions were therefore woken up in the dark, before dawn, so that by the time the first dull grey light crept across a battlefield they were awake, alert and manning their weapons. This was, and is still known as “stand-to” It was repeated at sunset.

Junior Campus News As you would be aware our Assistant Principal - Junior Campus Mrs Frances Zubreckyj is currently on Long Service Leave for Term 2. During her time overseas Mr and Mrs Zubreckyj will be visiting the Christian Brothers Community in Rome and also enjoying a well-earned break. We wish them every blessing for a safe and happy trip.

As previously announced Mrs Caroline Clarke has been appointed to the acting role of Assistant Principal Junior Campus. While in this role Mrs Clarke will be supported to maintain elements of her substantive

Counsellor’s Corner Forgiveness and Reconciliation No matter how close the friendship or how happy the marriage; there will come times of disagreement and disharmony. We need to ask for forgiveness and to be reconciled. “Forgive and forget” is so easy to say but so hard to put in practice! I am also pleased to announce that Mrs Amanda Portus will join the Junior Campus staff in Term 2 to teach Drama to a number of Primary classes. Mrs Portus is a long-serving and very talented member of CBC staff who has extensive teaching and industry experience in Drama.

This term we also welcome Mrs Margaret Duddy who will replace Ms Verral who is on personal leave. Mrs Duddy has a long association with CBC and is well known and respected by students in Year 3 Purple.

Deputy Principal Mr Shaun Clarke, the CBC Leadership Team and I will continue to work across all three campuses.

Conclusion During Sunday’s readings we reflected on Psalm 4:2, 4, 7-9. In Verse 8 we heard: In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for thou alone, O LORD, makest me dwell in safety.

Let us pray this ANZAC Day for peace throughout the world, peace in our families, our school and our hearts.

From The Deputy Principal Living The Spirit Of The ANZACs Last Tuesday the Senior School had an ANZAC ceremony organised by Mr Rory Harris (REC). This was a moving ceremony with the participation of the army cadets, the last post being played by Simon Cousins, our 2011 College Captain, and two minutes of silence.

The College community was extremely respectful and reverent on the occasion with over eight hundred students silent for two minutes as we remembered those who gave their lives for us today.

What is it that continues to engage today’s generation with an event that took place almost 100 years ago?

What is it that fascinates and moves us about these events in history and the people who lived and breathed the horror of war?

How is it that through such adversity the wisdom of love, humanity, faith and courage are born?

It was a very different time and place, but I believe that these events in history, and the spirit of ANZAC Day, and what wisdom evolved through sacrifice of life, continue to have relevance in our world today, especially for our youth, as many who fought and gave their lives were young adults. It is the spirit of ANZAC that continues to unite and motivate us a nation to reflect upon our identity as Australians, our freedom, and its significance for our nation and people.

On ANZAC Day we admire the virtues of the ANZAC Diggers. Their strong love for our country and commitment to its future saw them prepared to sacrifice their own life to create the lifestyle we enjoy as Australians. Many old collegians of the college took the unselfish act to fight for their country and their names are now displayed on an honour board outside the college chapel. For young people today, they are role models for today’s generation as they showed, both in their individual and collective quest, a leadership that was based on the virtues of love and courage for each other, our country and its future.

We are all touched by the ANZAC tradition; my grandfather was a Gallipoli soldier who in 1915 disembarked from a ship in ANZAC Cove totally unaware of the obstacles he would face. Unfortunately, many of his comrades were killed in the conflict and he was injured by shrapnel and transported to England. I often consider what courage and commitment to faith these young men must have had to continue to fight against such overwhelming odds. It is important to realise that we must not glorify war but rather promote the wisdom our war veterans have taught us through their life experiences. Wisdom – a love and respect for life and humanity, a commitment to faith, and the courage to challenge injustice.

On Wednesday my family attended the ANZAC Day march as my father who is now in his early nineties continues to march. He was an aircraft engineer in Catalinas in the South Pacific during World War II. I admire his determination as every year he finds it difficult to walk the distance of the march but is motivated to complete it no matter was obstacles for those who gave their lives for the freedom and possibilities we have today. It was pleasing to see many students involved in the ANZAC Day march as defence cadets, scouts, musicians or simply there to pay their respects to the veterans. Mr Rory Harris was also there to support his father in the march.

For the youth of today, the march also serves as a constant reminder that they as a generation have not experienced first-hand the impact of war, and that they need to as future leaders of our country continue to work towards world peace.

As Pope John Paul II so rightly stated: “To you, Creator of nature and humanity, of truth and beauty, I pray. Hear my voice, for it is the voice of the victims of all wars and the violence among individuals and nations. Hear my voice, for it is the voice of all the children who suffer, and will suffer when people put their faith in weapons and war. Hear my voice when I beg you to instil into the hearts of all human beings the wisdom of peace, the strength of justice, and the joy of fellowship. O God, hear my voice, and grant unto the world your everlasting peace”.

May the spirit of the ANZACs live in our hearts forever, and their wisdom and respect for life guide us as a College community to strive for world peace.

Ni Hao from China!

During the Easter holidays, a group of six students accompanied by three teachers from CBC took part in CBC’s inaugural China Study Tour.

The tour, organised with the help of the Confucius Institute at Adelaide University, was designed to support CBC’s commitment to raising the level of Asia Literacy within our college and encourage students to continue with their study of Chinese, a language introduced to the college’s curriculum in 2011.

Aside from visiting two of China’s largest cities, Shanghai and Beijing, the group also made visits to Qufu and Jinan, the homes of Confucius, China’s famous philosopher, and Shandong University, respectively.

From the onset, it was clear that the group was going to witness some amazing sights and experience a new culture, one never experienced before. The city of Shanghai left many students gasping at its towering skyscrapers and impressive architecture, as the group fought through unprecedented traffic. Also in Shanghai, the group visited the ancient town of Zhouzhuang, widely known as the water village, where the locals use traditional boats and bicycles to get around. On the last day in Shanghai, the group attended a breathtaking South China style acrobatic show, showcasing some of China’s elite gymnasts at their best.

Shanghai’s Number 8 School was the group’s first scheduled school visit in China.

Here the group was warmly welcomed by the school’s Principal and taken on a tour of the school’s classrooms and facilities, before making a guest appearance in one of the school’s English Language classes. Here our students were given the opportunity to mingle with their Chinese peers, discussing life in Australia. Later in the afternoon, students exchanged gifts sharing a little more of Australia with their new-found friends.

The much smaller city of Qufu, provided a stark contrast to the city life of Shanghai. Here the group met a local guide, better known as Ben, a descendent from Confucius’ family, to learn more about the great philosopher. Visits to Confucius’ Temple, Mansion and Cemetery ensured that everyone gained a better understanding of the life of Confucius and the period in which he lived.

About an hour’s drive from Qufu, the group enjoyed another short stop-over at another of China’s World Cultural Heritage sites, Mount Tai. Mount Tai is regarded as one of the five sacred mountains and is associated with sunrise, birth and renewal. Here the boys and teachers climbed the Mountain’s 4000 steps, passing many of the mountain’s temples along the way, as the mountain has a long history of being a place of religious worship. Mount Tai also became one of the principle places where the emperor would pay homage to heaven and earth.

The group’s main stay was at Shandong’s University, where the days were spent visiting another two schools and the Traditional World Cultural Research and Experience Base at the University. Number 1 School of Licheng District was a rural school, home to approximately 5500 students, of which 90% boarded at the school. The school itself was large on scale and averaged around 70 students per class, and was much more traditional in its curriculum. However in stark contrast to 4the rural school, the Affiliated Middle School of Shandong Normal University INSIGHT provided another opportunity for our boys to experience school life in China.

Whilst this school was also large in scale and in the number of students it housed, it appeared to have a more relaxed feel to it and the staff were much more in tune with modern styles of teaching. Here the students participated in student-led calligraphy and art lessons, along with an impromptu soccer match against their Chinese peers.

The final afternoon in Shandong was spent at the Traditional Cultural Research and Experience at Shandong University. The newly-built centre was established to give visitors a better understanding and knowledge of traditional Chinese Culture, dating back hundreds of years, and was a highlight of the group’s stay at Shandong University. Here the group enjoyed a “hands-on” experience, dressing up in traditional costumes, learning how to make traditional paper decorations and most importantly, participating in a traditional tea making ceremony. Earlier in the day, there was a visit to the tranquil Batou Springs, a beautiful garden in the centre of the city, with fresh water springs.

The group’s final leg of the tour was Beijing. The first stop in China’s capital was at the Great Wall of China. The wall, listed as one of the great wonders of the world, extends some 5500 miles and dates as far back as the Ming dynasty. Here the group was given the opportunity to climb the wall and immerse themselves in the history that the wall has to offer.

The group’s last day before heading home was spent in Beijing’s city centre, with visits to Tiananmen Square and the Palace Museum in the morning, and later in the afternoon a visit to the Temple of Heaven. Again, the classroom was brought to life as students were able to form a connection with the many sites and the history learnt in class in Australia.

As the group prepared to head home, that last night in Beijing many of the students openly shared their thoughts and experiences of the last 10 days. For many the highlight of their stay were the visits to the many World Cultural Heritage sites, whilst for others is was visiting the schools in China and drawing comparisons with our own college. No doubt, whilst the tour may have only lasted 10 days, the memories that China will leave implanted in everyone’s mind will make a lasting impression on everyone in the group.

Being the CBC inaugural China Study Tour, friendships were made and allimportant relationships built between CBC and members of the wider Chinese Community. The Confucius Institute at Adelaide University was an invaluable help to us as we planned and discussed the possibility of conducting such a venture. However, the help and assistance of our guide in China, better known as Walker, made our stay much more enjoyable and memorable.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Noel Mifsud for giving his support to the China Study Tour and Ms Wen Ben for her continued support to both staff and students whilst in China, in particular acting as the group’s official translator.

Acting Assistant Principal – Junior Campus Dear Parents and Caregivers, I hope you have all enjoyed the school holidays and had time as a family to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company. Family is so precious and so often in the hectic pace and demands of day-to-day living, our time together as a family becomes compromised.

On a personal level Shaun and I were able to spend some time with our family down at Robe, which was complemented by beautiful weather. Shaun and Paddy (our son) spent many an hour fishing, while Hebbie (our daughter) and I strolled along the main street, chatting over coffee and dabbling in a little retail therapy!

I am delighted and look forward to the opportunity this term to lead the Junior Campus and work in partnership with staff, students, parents, grandparents and caregivers to continue to develop teaching and learning across the college, that is reflective of best practice and research in 21st century education. The college through its strategic planning recognises a cultural shift in education, challenging us as educators to move beyond what we know and understand and develop in our students higher order literacy and numeracy skills, critical thinking and creative problem solving skills, that are transferable in a range of context, both independently and collaboratively.

Christian Brothers College has committed significant financial resources to facilitate a professional partnership with Professor Martin Westwell and the Flinders University Science 21 Team. In Monday’s “Professional Development Programme” Martin

continued to facilitate and develop our knowledge and understanding of higher order thinking through the role and function of the executive brain. The executive brain refers to a number of functions centred largely in the frontal and prefrontal cortex of the brain (located behind the forehead). This area is associated with the coordination and synthesis of emotions, thinking, memory and body or physical movement. The executive functions play a crucial role in the integration of many processes and, therefore, a crucial role in problem solving and higher order thinking. Having a deep understanding of how the brain processes information allows us as educators to better design learning and teaching practice that is brain compatible. “There is a profound difference between how the brain learns naturally and the sort of learning that is reflected in how schools teach. The most important consequence is that schools fail to teach for the development of the executive functions, and therefore leave out the indispensable ingredient for genuinely high standards.”

Arnold, Ph.D. (2006) The “Melbourne Declaration into the Educational Goal for Young People in Australian Schools” (2007) is consistent in its thinking stating: “Australia’s capacity to provide a high quality of life for all will depend on its ability as a nation to compete in the global economy based on knowledge and innovation. It is important that education equips students with the knowledge, understanding, skills and values to take advantage of these opportunities and to face the challenges of this era with confidence. Education plays a vital role in promoting the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, moral, spiritual and aesthetic development and wellbeing of our students. Our young people live in an ever-changing world and region, where they are required to have an understanding of: our strong relationships with Asia, competent technological skills, work in a globalised society, meet standardised testing in numeracy and literacy, ecological sustainability and solve problems in creative and innovative ways.”

The Melbourne Declaration is an expression of future educational thinking of our heads-of-state and is a foundational document in the formulation of the “Australian Curriculum”.

Higher order literacy and numeracy development is consider foundational to student learning and interconnected to higher order thinking, as proficiency in these foundational area frees up the working memory to focus on more complex thinking and problem solving. As such, student development in these foundational areas of learning is nationally monitored through the NAPLAN - standardised testing for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. This testing is scheduled to occur in Week 4 of Term 2. NAPLAN testing aligns to the Australian Curriculum and preparation for such testing is a natural progression of their schooling. The best way for you as parents to support your child through this process is to continue to work in partnership with their teachers to support their literacy and numeracy development and, on the day of the testing, maintain a calm and positive start to the day which includes a nutritious breakfast and the provision of water to support the brain’s hydration.

If you or your child is feeling anxious regarding NAPLAN testing or have questions of clarification please do not hesitate to speak with your child’s teacher, or Mrs Sandra Buchanan who coordinates this area within the college.

It is important to remember that such testing is one snap shot of your child’s performance within the school year and it is always important to consider this data in context of multiple sets of learning data that exist in assessing and monitoring your child’s development.

Next Friday, along with the Senior Campus, we will be honouring and celebrating Blessed Edmund Rice, with mass commencing at 9 am in the Centenary Gymnasium at the Senior Campus. As is usual for all CBC events you are most welcome to attend.

Junior Campus REC Coordinator Dear Families and Friends The Risen Christ is the eternal icon of the Divine Presence that is beyond any boundaries or limits of space and time, or any attempts to limit God to here or there. We cannot achieve our divine sonship and our divine daughterhood. All we can do is awaken to it and start drawing upon a universal mystery. We live with an inherent dignity by reason of our very creation, a dignity that no human has given to us and no human can take from us.

Those first disciples knew what it was like to be imprisoned with fear and disillusionment, locked doors and locked hearts! Suddenly, standing among them, is the risen Jesus. It is often when we are in turmoil that this same risen Christ appears in our midst. And, it was with Thomas and the disciples that he comes, not as the powerful One but as the wounded one!

Like Thomas, may we come to recognise the wounded Christ.

The well known poem written by John McRae serves as a constant reminder of the fragility of human life but more importantly of the brave sacrifices our soldiers give so we can live in a world of freedom.

As ANZAC Day passes this week, may this poem be used as source of reflection as we ponder those brave souls who have gone before us. Lest We Forget.

Gospel Challenge – Sharing Easter Joy Easter is the greatest feast of church year, since all of the events recorded in the gospels lead up to and point toward the resurrection. Jesus suffered, died, and was buried, but he was raised up on the third day. This is part and parcel of our Christian faith. This service then reinforces our great call to follow Jesus and share the joy of the resurrection.

A reading adapted from the Gospel of Mark: “Very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And entering the tomb, they saw God’s messenger sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. ‘Do not be amazed,’ they were told, ‘you seek Jesus who was crucified. Junior Campus Library The holiday period provided my family and I time to catch up on some reading and we focused on completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). I hope that the boys are working through the challenge.

I encourage a consistent and sustained effort while completing the PRC. Please let me know if I can support your son in any way.

Congratulations to Noel S (2 Purple) who has successfully completed the challenge: Thursday sees delivery of the final shelves for the Junior Campus library. We have forward facing tubs to house the Easy Fiction Collection. They will allow the boys to see the covers of the books, ideal for easy selection.

There are new shelves for the Fiction section, providing a clearer display. It will also provide an opportunity to house the Senior Fiction and Senior Picture Fiction in an area ideal for the more mature readers.

Please come and visit us to see how the shelving will impact on the boys’ learning. I am sure you will agree it will assist the boys in becoming independent users of the library.

St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal On 9 May 2012, Bob Byrne from St Vincent De Paul will be visiting the Junior Campus speaking with all classes and there will be an opportunity for our community to donate warm clothing and blankets to the annual St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal.

Project Compassion 2012 Special thanks to Mrs Kate Younie and her Social Action Group for collating the Hampers and leading the way with providing our boys with an opportunity to live in a more just and compassionate way.

CBC Rowers compete in the final full club regatta for the 2011/12 domestic racing season With now only some small Masters’ regattas left, Saturday 14 April was the final full club rowing regatta for the South Australian domestic racing season. This regatta included the Masters and 2nd Grade State Championships and sported unusually large fields in the majority of the races. Seven of our CBC Senior and Year 10 rowing groups combined to compete against mainly older club rowers with great success. Although not on the winner’s podium for any of the 2nd Grade Championship races, they did win three club races, coming second in another three and third in another two races. Results are as follows: • 3rd Grade Men’s Double scull Division 1 – Sam Crosato and Alex Gaggini first.

A remarkable achievement considering this was their first ever row together.

• 3rd Grade Men’s Coxed Four – the crew of Taylor Riley, Giuseppe Focarelli, Sam Crosato, Alex Gaggini and coxswain Paddy Clarke. After leading early, they were involved in strong battle with Torrens and had slipped to third. They moved into second as the last 200 metres came up. But Torrens had a little more experience and we were left to finish third in this six crew race. Again a great achievement considering this was their first row together and Taylor’s first ever sweep race. Only 1.3 seconds behind the more experienced Adelaide Uni and Torrens crews.

• Championship 2nd Grade Men’s Pair – in this first ever pair race for CBC, Alessandro Gabrielli and Liam Burke took the lead for the early stages of the race. However, as the race progressed our lighter crew struggled in the increasingly stronger head wind conditions. Holding second at the 1200 metre mark of the race, the strong head wind was proving to be the decider in the final stages of the race. CBC in third position as the crews went over the line.

• 3rd Grade Men’s single scull Division 1 – Alex Gaggini first with Giuseppe Focarelli second in a field of some eight crews. Both Alex’s and Giuseppe’s performances were made all the better by this being their first sculling races for this part of the 2011/12 racing program.

• 3rd Grade Men’s single scull Division 2 – Sam Crosato only two seconds behind the winner, past CBC rower Jack Jercic, in a field of seven competitors.

An encouraging performance for Sam in his first ever single scull race.

• 3rd Grade Men’s Coxed Quad Sculls – the crew of Taylor Riley, Giuseppe Focarelli, Sam Crosato, Alex Gaggini and coxswain Paddy Clarke again racing together, this time in the quad. Some sweet revenge over their previous race adversaries, finishing first. Not the early leaders, the CBC crew put in a consistent race and moved away over the final stages of the race, winning by nearly five seconds in this seven crew race.

• Championship 2nd Grade Men’s Double Scull – the CBC crew of Sam Crosato and Alex Gaggini led for the majority of the race. But this being their fifth race for the day and the CBC boys not used to so many races in a day, they began to feel the effects as they moved into the final 500 metres. A strong disciplined final 500 metres was not enough to hold onto their lead as they were overtaken and reduced to second place by the fast finishing Torrens crew.

The decision to row in this regatta was purely a personal one for those boys who raced. Some raced because it would be their final race for CBC. Some raced to gain some race experience before having to qualify for the winter national race programs. And some raced to gain experience from racing with this year’s senior group. Whatever their reason, all who raced again gave Christian Brothers College a proud community presence. And proved CBC students cannot only compete at sport with the top schools of the state but can mix it with the senior club levels as well.

Year 8/9 Badminton CBC defeated Blackfriars in the 8/9 Intercol Cup in Week 10 of Term 1 Coached by Bob Wohlenberg, sixteen boys represented CBC for Intercol at Blackfriars to record a resounding victory. Team 1 defeated Blackfriars 9 sets to 2 sets. Team 2 defeated Blackfriars 10sets to 1 set. Mr Wohlenberg must be thanked for the outstanding improvement shown this term. Jonathon Thai showed he is a player of the future.

Tertiary Studies & Careers Expo Year 10 Future Pathways UMAT Future Dates

Year 10 Future Pathways Year 10s will undergo a Personality and Learning Styles assessment over the next few weeks as an introduction into career checking and exploring options. This will then be used as part of their PLP in Semester 2. However, if senior students are unsure of future options, they are encouraged to see me and have a chat, using their previous analysis as a starting point.

UMAT

Tertiary Studies & Careers Expo The 21st century offers a confusing array of career options for our young people. With constantly changing courses, entry requirements and study options available, it is crucial that your son investigate his options.

Year 12 students who are considering applying for Medicine or Dental Surgery at Adelaide University or Clinical sciences/BMBS, Vision Science at Flinders University need to apply for and sit for the UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test).

The Tertiary Expo provides just that opportunity. All public SA universities, TAFE Institutes, interstate and overseas universities, Defence Force Recruiting and many more will be exhibiting and presenting some sessions. (See attached flyer)

Year 12s will make their own way to the Convention Centre from 9.30 am to return to school by Recess. Year 11s will be escorted down to the Convention Centre after Recess and will be dismissed from the event.

Section 2: Understanding People will have 44 questions (55 minutes) Section 3: Non-Verbal Reasoning will have 42 questions (55 minutes) Total Test time will be 3 hours.

Acceptable ID includes Drivers Licence; Learner Permit; Passport or a certified letter of identification. If you require the latter, you must organise well ahead of time!!
