Reconciliation Week Liturgy

From The Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers,

CBC – Community of Faith Now when the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues [languages], as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4 A number of significant events occurred this week which remind us that CBC is a community of Faith.

National Reconciliation Week Celebrations (27 May – 3 June) were held over until Monday due to the rain on Friday. The College commemorated the event by a variety of events centred on the theme Let’s talk Reconciliation. Some of the events included a liturgy, flying of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flag, planning of an Indigenous welcome dinner for present and prospective CBC Indigenous families and integration of Indigenous studies across the curriculum.

Grace and be a vital link in communicating information across the Archdiocese during the year of Grace.’

Finally, the 250th Anniversary of the birth of our Founder Blessed Edmund Rice resonates with the message of Pentecost to Love our neighbour.

Blessed Edmund’s love for children on the margins was exemplified in his calling to provide education, food and clothing to those in need.

Pentecost Sunday reminded us that God is with us, that God graces us with the gift of the Holy Spirit as a reminder of His deep love of humanity and our planet.

We are called in Luke’s Gospel to resonate this love to our neighbour.

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind and [love] your neighbour as yourself. Luke 10:27 Secondly, Oliver Megins and Jack Poole were commissioned by Archbishop Philip Wilson at the Cathedral on Sunday as Ambassadors for the Year of Grace. As part of the commissioning blessing the Archbishop said: At the beginning of this Year of Grace we wish to acknowledge the important role of the Ambassadors who will work with our communities to ‘start afresh from Christ’. … They will assist in promoting the Year of

Go Fly a Kite When I was young I made kites with wood from strips of paling fences, brown paper, flour-glue and string.

Endless carefree hours passed with a kite high in the sky. Today I can relive and enjoy the experience as I recall the memory. I often see multicoloured kites of a variety of materials flying at the beach or on ovals. Kite flying is a joy from the past, a symbol of childhood and a witness to its inherent freedom and simplicity. These precious things cost nothing in this money-minded world, nothing more than to stop and be still, to set one’s heart free and to look up. Flying a kite is a recipe for life in its simplest form, that is to stand with one’s feet planted firmly on the ground while keeping ones’ eyes fixed steadfastly on our loving God.

Year 11 Food Technology Last week the following students from Mrs Lee’s Year 11 Food Technology class prepared a delicious morning tea for staff as part of their ongoing assessment: Andrew Barbara, Troy Bille, Dion Bruno, Brayden Dwyer, Murtaza Haidari, Jesrin Joseph, Paul Lukeman, Kaine Lyons, Phi Nguyen, Habibulla Sakhi, Tom Bless and David Torres.

I congratulate Mrs Lee and her students on the variety, flavour and presentation of food prepared.

As a community I invite you to consider the many contributing factors to car crashes and accidents, including: alcohol, speeding, distractions (texting, taking mobile calls, putting on make-up whilst driving) fatigue, peer pressure, drag racing, disobeying rules and not wearing seat belts.

In light of my previous comments regarding improving facilities at CBC I am pleased to announce the development of five new CBC tennis courts on our existing property on Hutt Street. Recently completed, these courts will provide much improved facilities for tennis training and matches.

CBC Old Collegian Jason Austin shared his story of how he became paraplegic because of a motorcycle accident caused by alcohol. His honest account of how his life has dramatically changed for him and his family moved many of us to tears.

Exciting news for the College

Last Friday I attended a Driver Education Class run by SA Fire Brigade. Our Year 11 students and teachers were also in attendance. This workshop was one of the hardest-hitting and confronting sessions I have ever attended. We were shown graphic video clips of accidents involving young people and given frightening statistics on road deaths in Australia.

We were also challenged not to drink and drive but rather:

There are times however when the behaviour of students, coaches and parents fails to resonate with the College values of Faith, Excellence, Community and Compassion.

I was disappointed recently to hear of parents from the opposition belittling a CBC competitor on the field, and a CBC parent disputing an umpire’s decision by using electronic media to dispute line calls. Both situations are unacceptable and the subject of College investigation.

There is an expectation that all students and spectators will participate in a respectful manner, speak in a positive and respectful tone and abide by the referee’s decisions regardless of the outcome.

I ask all involved in co-curricular activities to enjoy the experience and allow others the chance to do the same.

There was also a warning to students not to wear headphones when walking across roads as statistics point to many deaths caused by such inattentiveness.

I implore parents to observe the parking regulations and 25km speed limit around all three campuses and ask you as parents to model road safety.

Co-curricular News I am always proud to hear stories from our parents and the wider community about the high degree of sportsmanship, respect and pride our students have in their Co-curricular College commitment. I thank all students, coaches, managers and spectators who work so hard behind the scenes to ensure our students are able to participate safely and enjoyably in the wide variety of co-curricular activities.

Br John is a Christian Brother currently employed at Rostrevor College as the Assistant Principal Religious Identity and Mission.

He began his teaching career at CBC and went on to serve as Principal and Deputy Principal in Edmund Rice schools across South Australia and Western Australia.

Both Br John and Mr Clarke will bring much wisdom, discernment and professionalism to their respective roles. I look forward to returning to the College in Term 4.

From The Deputy Principal Having A Vision And Making A Difference This week the college and the global Edmund Rice Network celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice in 1762. Edmund Rice was born to Robert Rice and Margaret Rice (née Tierney) on the farming property of “Westcourt”, in Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland. Edmund Rice was the fourth of seven sons, although he also had two stepsisters, Joan and Jane Murphy, the offspring of his mother’s first marriage.

At this time, Irish Catholics were punished by antiCatholic Penal Laws which were enacted and enforced by the Protestant-dominated Irish Parliament. Rice’s education, like that of every other Irish Catholic of the day, was greatly compromised by the 1709 amendment to the Popery Act, which decreed that any public or private instruction in the Catholic faith would render teachers liable to prosecution, a measure that was not reformed until 1782. In this environment, hedge schools proliferated. The boys of the Rice family obtained an education at home through Patrick Grace, a member of the small community of Augustinian friars in Callan.

The icon of Blessed Edmund Rice depicts a scene from Edmund’s boyhood where he and Brother Patrick Grace, a gentle Augustinian who was well known and well loved in the Callan area as the Little Grey Friar, sit talking.

The two are engrossed in conversation, their bare feet resting on the brink of a well. Perhaps the well is one of Ireland’s reputed 3,000-plus holy wells, or perhaps it is a well of living water. Its surface is disturbed by a spiral representing the Holy Spirit’s never-ending movement.

Desmond Keyne the artist of the icon states that he interprets this image as: “A vision is a picture or idea you have in your mind of yourself, your business, or anything this is going to happen. A clear vision helps you pursue dreams and achieve goals; an idea of the future, a strong wish. A vision that is clear will open your mind to the endless possibilities of the future. A vision will help you to overcome obstacles in the way and helps you hold on when times are tough. A vision that is well defined helps you to focus and create a purpose that becomes your measurement for your success. If you do not have a vision of who you want to be, how you want to succeed or what you want out of life, you begin to lack drive and your life becomes just an order of events”.

Edmund Rice from an early age had a vision for his life, whether this was success in his uncle’s business

or eventually establishing the Christian Brothers congregation in 1802. His vision soon became a reality because before his death there were schools throughout Ireland and overseas. The icon image reminds us that by having a strong vision connected with our passion we can reach our highest potential. Regardless of what is going on in the world or the challenges that present themselves, a vision helps us to know what and why we are doing the things we are doing. Like Edmund Rice, having a vision is most important in the path to success in your life. You feel much more valuable as a person when you set and achieve visions and goals.

A vision can be used in two different ways -- inspiration and prediction. It is first used to inspire you in reaching something that you are wanting. It is also used in prediction for changes in the future and interests you have. Having a vision is one of the most powerful ways to keep you focused on what you want in life while keeping you motivated in achieving it. We all need to have a clear vision in what we want in life, studies and relationships because that vision allows us to open up our mind to many possibilities and a brighter and bigger future. When you can envision a future that is better, happier, more productive, you are more likely to make the changes that are necessary for you to reach that type of life.

Edmund Rice as a leader had a vision. He could see that the education of the boys in Waterford was the way to the future to assist those on the margins but he still remained focused on the present in feeding and clothing the students. It is important to remember that a vision should not be seen as a dream, but a reality that has not yet come into existence. A vision is a strong force in anyone’s life, but a vision is essential if students are to succeed in their studies. Edmund Rice’s life provides a wonderful role model of someone who had both vision and perseverance and continued to motivate himself against forces of resistance -- failure, emotional hardships and difficulties in establishing the congregation.

If we are going to create a vision for ourselves we need to know exactly what we want. For our vision to be successful we, like Edmund Rice, need to feel passionate about it. The only way to be successful in one’s vision is to visualise it and set goals and a plan of action to reach it. A vision is the capability to see beyond your current reality, creating and inventing what does not now exist and becoming what you are not right now.

A vision is important in all aspects of our life; physically, emotional, academically, spiritually and psychologically.

Before his death Edmund Rice may have not realised that the outcome of his dream would mean over two hundred schools around the world teaching boys and living his vision to those who are marginalised in our society. He was passionate about his life and had a vision for change. Edmund Rice has left us a legacy that building your vision does not have to be difficult as long as you know exactly what it is you see for yourself in the future. We thank God for the vision and life of Blessed Edmund Rice.

From the Archives At this time of the year we remember two of the first Brothers in the CBC Adelaide community -- Francis de Sales Moran and Sebastian O’Hagan -- whose anniversaries occur at this time.

In 1878 they left their homes in Ireland to make the hazardous journey to the Australian colonies knowing that they were unlikely to see their friends or family again. They were willing to do this because they believed in the importance of a Catholic education for young men. Once here they endured the hardships of trying to educate their students with limited resources in a difficult environment. The work was hard and the days were long, looking after both day students and boarders, and it often took a toll on their health. Just a few years after the school was opened Br Francis de Sales Moran died on 31 May 1883 aged thirty-five. The next day Br Sebastian O’Hagan died aged thirty-one. They are both buried at West Terrace.

The contributions of these pioneers of our College are acknowledged in a plaque outside the museum and in the naming of rooms after them on the ground floor of the Brothers House.

Acting Assistant Principal – Junior Campus Dear Parents and Caregivers, On Friday 25 May the Junior Campus Assembly reflected upon the significance of “National Sorry Day” and our need for unity as a nation. Our need to reach out with an open and loving heart of reconciliation, to right the wrongs of the past and to develop a new relationship for the future based on respect and equality.

Some of the children in the Junior Campus through their art this week have traced and decorated their hands as a visual symbol of reconciliation.

I wish to thank Mrs Sandra Buchanan and Mr David Molloy and their classes for the sensitive and respectful manner in which they planned and facilitated the assembly, promoting in those who had gathered an honest reflection on Australia’s past history, on the laws, policies and practices of forcible removal of indigenous children from their families, which led to the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations and their descendants. As the reflection drew to a close they led us in a prayerful visioning of a better future, a future that reflected respectful relationships and a true spirit of reconciliation, justice and solidarity.

National Sorry Day 2012 Saturday 26 May marked the “15th National Sorry Day”, a day of commemoration and remembrance for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forcibly removed from their families, communities and culture between the 1800s and the 1970s – known as the Stolen Generations.

National Sorry Day is a day of national significance, which commemorates the anniversary of the “Bringing them home Report” tabled in Federal Parliament on 26 May 1997. The Report was the result of a two-year National Inquiry into the policies of successive State and Territory Governments that had been used to justify the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities.

Among the Report’s 54 recommendations was a call for Australian Parliaments to offer official apologies and acknowledge the responsibility of their predecessors for the laws, policies and practices of forcible removal, and that a ‘Sorry Day’ be commemorated each year to acknowledge the history of the removals and their effects.

On 13 February 2008 the then Prime Minister, the Hon Kevin Rudd MP, moved a motion of “Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples” with specific reference to the Stolen Generations.

The Prime Minister described it as an occasion for “the nation to turn a new page in Australia’s history by righting the wrongs of the past and moving forward with confidence in the future”.

The motion honored the Indigenous peoples of this land and reflected in particular on the mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations: “For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry”.

(Hon Prime Minister Kevin Rudd MP) Responding to the “Apology to Australian’s Indigenous Peoples” was Stolen Generations’ elder Aunty Lorraine Peeters who presented the Australian Parliament with the gift of a glass coolamon. The coolamon contained a message thanking the Parliament for the “Apology” on behalf of all those affected by removal from their families. In the message Aunty Lorraine explained that the coolamon was a traditional vessel for carrying children, and “a symbol of the hope we place in the new relationship you wish to forge with our people”.

Edmund Rice Education Australia recognises, through the touchstone “Liberating Education”, the power of education to create renewal and change, to break down barriers, challenge injustice and promote equality.

Having authentic indigenous perspectives throughout the new Australian Curriculum, but especially within our history curriculum is a powerful step in the right direction towards true reconciliation as “knowledge is power” and no longer will we hide from our past, but instead use the power of acknowledgement and reconciliation to construct a future of hope and prosperity.

One of the significant achievements of “The National Sorry Day Committee” has been to influence authentic representation of Indigenous people’s perspectives within the Australian Curriculum. The Australian Curriculum Assessments and Reporting Authority’s (ACARA) adoption of a number of important recommendations from the committee has created positive changes to the new history curriculum for all Australian schools. With these changes, the significance of National Sorry Day, National Reconciliation Week and the Anniversary of the Apology will be introduced in Year 3. More references to the Stolen Generations and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history are included throughout the primary school years. Previously, Stolen Generations history and most Aboriginal history weren’t covered until Year 10.

The co-chair or the National Sorry Day Committee, Helen Moran, stated: “Australian children deserve to be taught the full picture of Australian history from the beginning with age-appropriate resources that inform, challenge and inspire them.”

Other changes proposed by the National Sorry Day Committee that have been adopted within the new National History Curriculum include: • Amending a section in Year 4 curriculum so Australia’s First Nations peoples are not grouped with ‘flora and fauna’ when considering the impact of British colonisation.

• In Year 9, an elective study now considers the motivations for the laws and practices that led to the forcible removal of Indigenous children, which started in the 19th century and continued into the 20th century. It also explores experiences of separation.

ACARA has also confirmed that an in-depth study in Year 10 on the rights and freedoms of Australia’s First Nation’s peoples in the 20th century is mandatory. This includes the “Bringing them home Report” and Stolen Generations.

Such collaboration and openness to inclusive practice and indigenous perspectives within the formulation of our new curriculum is representative of the symbol of hope that Aunty Lorraine Peeters envisioned in 2008.

In closing I invite you to reflect on the following prayer;

Prayer for the Journey of Healing “Almighty and loving God, you who created all people in your image lead us to seek your compassion as we listen to the stories of our past.

You gave your only Son, Jesus, who died and rose again so that sins will be forgiven.

We place before you the pain and anguish of dispossession of land, language, lore, culture and family kinship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have experienced.

We live in faith that all people will rise from the depths of despair and hopelessness.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families have endured the pain and loss of loved ones, through the separation of children from their families.

We are sorry and ask Your forgiveness.

Touch the hearts of the broken, homeless and inflicted and heal their spirits.

In your mercy and compassion walk with us as we continue our journey of healing to create a future that is just and equitable.

Lord, you are our hope. Amen.”

• The teaching of colonial history in Year 5 now includes a clear reference to the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

• In the Year 6 History curriculum the experiences of children are now considered when studying experiences of Australian democracy and citizenship. The forcible removal of children from their families leading to the Stolen Generations is included as an example of the lack of citizenship rights of Australia’s First Nation’s Peoples. The significance of the 1962 right to vote federally and the 1967 referendum are also now included.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Last Wednesday was National Simultaneous Storytime. We celebrated by sharing The Very Cranky Bear, by Nick Bland, with our buddy class. The boys enjoyed the beautiful story about friendship and sacrifice. I invite you to share the story with your child. It can be accessed via our library weebly at www.cbclibrary.weebly.com.

Junior Campus RE Coordinator Dear Families and Friends Like a Divine Sun, God draws us to growth through the death of change, and the newness of life, but like the sun, God is not just way out there; every spark of insight, every touch of kindness that we enjoy flows from the burning furnace of wisdom and charity that we call God. The radiance of the fire of God’s love, cast on the Earth in Christ, is the atmosphere in which we live, move, grow and have our being.

This Pentecost, the Bishops of Australia have invited all Catholics to be involved in the Year of Grace. There is no such word as “Easy” in basketball.

This was the second of the knockout games for CBC. We are in Pool D against Rostrevor College, Prince Alfred College and Pulteney Grammar School. It is a tough draw against talented opposition teams. The wins against RC and PAC place us in a good position to progress to the next round in this competition. The team congratulates PAC for their sportsmanship and a spirited game.

The first quarter was a low scoring affair with the first points on the board by PAC taking five minutes into the game.

We managed to counter-attack and won the quarter seven points to two.

The second quarter was a completely different scenario where we lost our focus due to undisciplined passes and conceded five consecutive turnovers to PAC who capitalised to score 10 unanswered points. At the major break CBC was 11 points down.

We rallied in the third quarter to outscore PAC 13 to 9. CBC entered the final quarter 25 to 31 down and had to make up the deficit of six points to draw and force overtime, as was the case in our last game against Rostrevor College.

CBC changed tack and went to a full court press. We drew level.

We matched PAC point for point in the first five minutes of the fourth but needed something extra to break the deadlock. The critical end play was in the last three minutes with solid and basic basketball tactics of quick forward passes, solid defence inside, containing the opposition three point shooters, blocking out in defensive rebounds, protecting the weak side, passing to the player with the best scoring option, contesting the loose ball on the court and intense defence to cause turnovers. The end of the fourth quarter testified to the intensity of the game with a score line in our favour of 22 to 12. This was sufficient to give CBC a 4 point margin to prevail for a win and progress to the next knockout round.

While the knockout rounds are important, the team realises that there are still eight regular games to contest. An excellent outcome for the team and this win will give them confidence for the next game.

Poynter played his usual role as point and was very quick to get the ball down the court. He must be credited with some intercepts and being reliable at the “safety” position at the top of the key to receive contested passes to reset the play. Machar worked well as the utility player and as a forward and shooting guard. He made a strong run on the left tramlines to execute a perfect pass to Ciabattoni who complemented with a two pointer under the basket.

Sach hit a two in the first and countered with a three pointer in reply to the opposition. The three was taken from what I consider the most difficult shooting position – the baseline where there are very little visual frames of reference. He also was instrumental in going out wide to receive passes from players under offensive pressure. Balkwill was strong under the net and credited with strong rebounds to shake off opposition hands attempting to get the ball off him. He moved well between offensive and defensive position to be a constant scoring threat to PAC. De Pinto scored a valuable four points but in my mind, while this was invaluable, it was overshadowed by his impressive overall on-court contribution to the team in this game. He read the game, countered his opposite number, intercepted passes and was a dominant player in the crucial last minute of this game. Hilliker (with his new playing number of 42) started the scoring for CBC with a quick two pointer in the first and ended up with an eight point haul. He worked in partnership with De Pinto to slow the opposition charge in defence. Quick hands and an excellent read of the game is his trademark. That critical intercept and steal from a sideline opposition throw-in, in our defensive zone, aggressive drive down the court and pass off to Ciabattoni to score sealed the game.

Ciabattoni contributed to this “must win” game with a game high 17 points and this included two three pointers.

One of those threes was right on the buzzer in the second.

I was impressed with his aggressive defence against his opposition counterpart to cause a many bad passes resulting in turnovers in our favour.

Megins played all positions well and most importantly, got his shot selection right in this game. He used his height intelligently to give the team 10 points from drives and set shorts within the arc. He was quite outstanding in pulling down some critical defensive rebounds, securing the ball and passing off to the point guards to start our offense.

Kurvers was in the starting five for good reason as he was gallant in setting up the first line of defence in our defensive zone and posting up well in offence. Working in tandem with Megins and Balkwill, Kurvers paid heed to hitting the boards, securing and passing off to the guards in addition to presenting himself as a scoring option down in the low post.

Played his position well.

The team thanks Ann-Marie Kurvers for her expertise in scoring and once again giving me an ongoing stream of assessment regarding personal and team fouls, scores after each quarter, opposition top scorers and the list goes on.

She provides the team with invaluable data that helps us with our tactics.

We also thank parents and other supporters who turned up to support the team.

Open B Basketball CBC 41 drew with PAC 41 It was a privilege to coach the Open B team on the day. The team faced a very determined and focused PAC team. We gave from behind to secure a draw, having to make up a deficit of 9 points in the last quarter. I was very proud of the players as would Mr Mellow (very sick on the day) with their tenacity and perseverance. An outstanding performance.

Congratulations to PAC Bs for their sportsmanship.

The first quarter was an even game with an equal score 9-9. PAC had the upper hand in the second and third quarter to have a handy lead of 9 points as we faced the fourth and final quarter. CBC had to dig deep to make up the deficit. They did so in gallant style to overhaul PAC to a 19 to 10 final quarter, to force a drawn score.

The players on the bench played an important part in the scenario unfolding before them. As coach, I apologised to the players on bench the for their lack of court time. It was heartening to get a quick response from Andrew Nguyen who put it quite succinctly, “Sir, it is an important game and it is worth it”. These direct words from a player on the bench epitomised the CBC team spirit and most importantly acknowledged and galvanised the players on court to acknowledge this gesture to produce a fine result against an excellent opposition team.

Harrison, the “Enforcer”, was outstanding as he played the point guard, shooting guard and forward roles. He kept us in the hunt with triple threes in the first and second quarter.

He followed this up by aggressive defence and drives to the basket in the third quarter to score 8 points, finishing the game with an invaluable 20 points. Squire, the “General”, dictated and organised play for the team. This was a critical leadership role, which he takes on seamlessly. He directed players in defence and offence, and also added to our score with an invaluable 13 points for the game.

Lennon, after his characteristic soprano greeting of the coach, played an excellent defensive game. He was responsible for some excellent rebounds both defensively and in offence to put a contested two-pointer in. Nguyen moved extremely well at both ends of the court. He made good position, got some tough free balls and made some superb passes to the players in the best position to score.

Layug was excellent in offence and defence. He took on the opposition point guard effectively in our defensive zone and was very quick to move down the court to present a passing and scoring option. Manton was absolutely a brick wall in defence as he blocked out and pulled in some critical rebounds. He secured the ball (at times against heavy opposition pressure) and passed off to the “runners”.

Nguyen played an excellent game both on the bench and on the court. He put in an excellent three pointer when we needed it, to stabilise in the third quarter, in addition to being an option for a pass. Carrieri played the forward role well with some valuable rebounds and pushing the ball up the middle to present a shooting option. He took one for the team in defence with a blow to the nose (blood rule) but went on to attempt a couple of inside jump shots.

The team thanks the parents and supporters for their presence and vocal support. The team especially thank Mrs Squire for her consistent volunteering of scoring duties and invaluable advice during the game.

Best play: Jordan Lennon’s musical rendition of the Assistant Coach’s name. It served the purpose of putting the opposition off their game!

Junior C Basketball CBC 28 defeated PAC 16 Best Players: Aidan Smith and Gian Hipolito The team put in a solid effort to beat PAC and achieve their first win of the season.

Whilst PAC struggled for numbers, CBC made most of the opportunity handed to us and took the time to put into practice the skills and drills covered in the weekly training sessions.

Gian Hipolito was quick off the mark using his court speed to score the first basket, but was soon followed by an inform Aidan Smith who went on to score a series of baskets earning him the team’s highest scorer for the match.

Basil Dimopolous found his form early in the second half and added to the team’s final score, developing a greater confidence as the game progressed.

Congratulations to all boys on a great effort!

Prep A Basketball CBC 36 defeated PAC 31 CBC was looking to do the ‘triple’ on Saturday morning (an As, Bs and Cs win) and the Prep As didn’t disappoint.

In fact, the 5-point deficit was more flattering to the opposition.

CBC had a magnificent second quarter, which proved to be enough to get them over the line. Prince Alfred seemed to show some resistance in only the final minutes, which proved to be too late.

Owain Manship had a magnificent game, contributing 16 points and skillfully defending key opposition threats.

Luke Zounis had a better game on the defensive boards than offense, and should be happy with how many of the opposition’s shots he altered in the post. Cooper Jaquillard played a great game as a point-forward, scoring 8 points, and often in tricky circumstances. Ambrose Ronson, Lachlan Grant-Allan and Jayden Hoggart helped out extensively in the smaller guard roles.

Prep B Basketball CBC 33 defeated PAC 15 CBC again put in a magnificent performance against a taller and more physical opposition, leaving Prince Alfred dazed and confused, allowing only 5 points in the second half!

An old basketball saying is that “defense wins games …” and the CBC Prep Bs are proof of this with their exhaustively pressing half-court defensive game and strict adherence to fundamental basketball.

Our smaller guards are rebounding better than taller players from the opposition and the general attitude of the players in the transition game is outstanding.

Mitchell Squire played a dominant game, scoring 18 points.

Kyle Fleetwood-Pieper was pivotal on defense and chipped in with a handy 8 points. Daniel Wallace and Paddy Clarke were also key contributors on the morning. Jack Hamblin continues to be a versatile player, competing in the post and also playing the difficult point-forward role. Thomas Signore had a decent debut.

Special mention goes to Sascha Jensen who, despite a severely sprained ankle in the second quarter, bravely played the whole final quarter.

HOCKEY Open Hockey CBC 11 defeated Glenunga International High School 0 Goal Scorers: L Christensen 3, B Tran 3, A Connell 2, J Burwell 2, C Philp 1.

CBC had a brilliant start to the game utilising a new technique implemented by the coach, Jordan. CBC pushed up hard into the attack zone for the most part of the game, dropping back into a defensive role for the last part of the game. Pushing up hard worked particularly well, resulting in a 7-0 score by half time, CBC’s way. After a switch-up of players, intended to give all players on the team a chance to score, CBC went back into the game, hungry for more goals. Glenunga fought back in the second half, bringing the ball well into the danger zone of our half of the field, but our defensive line proved their worth and cleared out the ball before any goals were scored. Keeping up the pressure, CBC scored another 4 goals, spread amongst the team. Towards the end of the game, Joel Burwell made his debut into the goal scoring community, volleying a ball with lightning reflexes into the goals. As the game drew to an end, Liam Telford took a run up the field from defence, keeping possession of the ball before passing it into Glenunga’s defence zone. Then the unthinkable unfolded -- Joel received the ball a second time and scored ANOTHER goal, seconds before the siren signalled the end of the game. A great result, more so in terms of team work, organisation and sportsmanship.

football First XVIII Football CBC 12.10 (82) defeated Mercedes 9.11 (65) (Round 4) Best Players: O Megins, M Nye, M Formichella, N Delaat, J Tollenaar. All played well.

Consistent effort and improved skill usage were the cornerstone of this win. We led at quarter time with a great start and going downhill with the wind. It was evident the contested ball was the key and Nye, Formichella, Robinson

and Bielby kept us in the game but trailing at the half .

A brilliant quarter by Oliver Megins in ruck gave us the advantage at the final break. The final quarter was a tight affair and tensions were strained; however, a goal against the tide by Alex Caon gave us the breathing space to hold on and take our first win of the season.

Pembroke 13.10 (88) defeated CBC 10.8 (68) (Round 5) Best Players: L Harrison, M Nye, M Formichella, N Delaat, J Tollenaar, J Kittell-Neill, T Bielby The one that got away!! Pembroke were shell-shocked when after the first quarter CBC had the upper hand in proceedings. However, a few skill errors and our tactical inefficiency saw Pemboke reverse the trend by the half break. Lochlan Harrison returning from injury was a revelation in an unaccustomed wing role but the movement of him from the position due to circumstances changed our balance and momentum.

However, our character showed through and we persisted throughout the 3rd and 4th quarters but just could not make the headway necessary to challenge. Discipline and calm decision making, which comes from playing in high pressure games each week, will develop in the future. We can only think of mistakes made and try to get better at execution of our skills.

Year 9 Knockout Football Game 1: CBC 8.8 (56) defeated Marryatville 1.1 (7) Best Players: Bielby, Strange, Daly Goal Scorers: 2 Perpetua, 1 Koulizos, Aplin, Strange, Goodwin, Taylor Sarunic, Bielby

Game 2: CBC 11.11 (77) defeated Reynella 2.2 (14) Best Players: All played well Goal Scorers: 3 Tyson Sarunic, Troy Nicholson, 1 Boffo, Aplin, McPherson, Bielby, Cotsios The combined Year 8/9 knockout football team had two convincing wins to advance to the next round of the competition. The side from Marryatville High School were quite strong and possessed a number of talented players.

We also displayed our talent and were the more skilled team because of the depth of ability through the team.

I was very pleased that the players responded tactically to the windy conditions and played to our strengths. We trusted ourselves in the packs, where Trent Daly, Tom Bielby and Jack Strange won contested ball and constantly drove us forward.

Marryatville beat Reynella by 10 goals so when we played them our players were rotated around the field. The Year 8s began to play with more confidence as they adjusted to larger and faster opponents, and showed why they are a highly fancied CBC football cohort.

I was pleased with the all-round team effort and the discipline shown by the players as one of our opponents lost focus and attempted to upset our team.

I am confident that we can progress deep into this tournament, provided the players continue to follow instructions and play as a team.

Year 9 Football CBC 11.13 (69) defeated PAC 0.2 (2) Best Players: Colangelo, Daly, Strange, Owens, Johansen, Koulizos, all played well Goal Scorers: 2 Koulizos, Clarke, Boffo, 1 Tully, Nardecchia, Nicholson, Johansen, Owens The Year 9 footballers produced a dominant performance

against PAC, who were held scoreless until late in the game. Slippery conditions made ball-handling difficult at times and this probably affected our ability to score more fluently or regularly.

Again, Trent Daly dominated the ruck and Jack Strange and Jack Owens repeatedly drove the ball from the centre from Trent’s ruck work. This gave our forwards many opportunities and they all responded well. On top of Trent’s ruck work, he also provided plenty of run as he linked up through the middle of the ground.

When the ball did enter our defence, it was quickly repelled by our half back line of Marcus Colangelo, Will McPherson and Luke Johansen. Colangelo was brilliant in the way he provided run and used the ball creatively. The run and attack provided by the half backs was the main reason PAC couldn’t score. If the ball did get past them, and this was rare, Matthew Italiano, Chris Boffo and Adrian Smith repelled from deep in defence to provide further attack.

Our game this week against St Michael’s 2nds should provide the team an opportunity to fine-tune our playing style and allow fringe players the chance to get more of the football.

Year 8A Football Immanuel College 12.8 (80) defeated CBC 3.6 (24) Goal Scorers: 1 – J Hicks, T Sarunic, S Tsoukatos Best Players: A McPherson, T Sarunic, D Aplin, B D’Antonio In a game played in cold, slippery conditions, CBC matched a strong Immanuel team for three quarters, but could not sustain the effort, sadly losing by 9 goals. In our first loss for the season, the most disappointing fact was that at three quarter time, we were only 13 points down and right in the game. We had won the second and third quarters and were looking forward to a great contest in the last quarter.

CBC allowed the opposition to get off to a flying start and by the end of the quarter Immanuel had kicked 7 goals and kept CBC goalless. We were playing well and were right in the game, but allowed Immanuel to score far too many easy goals, with inadequate defence. Unfortunately, CBC players dropped their heads and were not prepared to do the simple things, such as chase hard; be first to the ball; shepherd for team-mates; win the contested possessions; kick accurately to targets and outnumber their opponents at the contests. For some reason we went to sleep and sat back hoping someone else would get the hard ball. For most of the game our commitment and attack on the ball was terrific. We were first to the ball, got the free kicks, ran hard; tackled fiercely; and our second and third efforts were admirable. Admittedly, Immanuel were a very talented team, with much bigger players than CBC, yet we were able to match them for three quarters, but in the end we could not maintain the intensity that is needed to beat the top teams.

Andrew McPherson ran all day and never stopped trying.

He battled against bigger opponents and his work around the ground was very impressive. Taylor Sarunic worked tirelessly on the ball and his tackling of much bigger opponents and reading of the play was first class. Daniel Aplin set up many attacking opportunities and he was always prepared to throw himself into packs and get the hard ball. Ben D’Antonio ran all day and his pace and agility was to be admired. His balance in the slippery conditions enabled him to gain numerous contested possessions.

Special mention to Jacob Edgington and Zane Bennett; whilst not in the best players, I was impressed with their attack on the ball. Unfortunately not enough of their teammates could emulate their efforts.

It is a sad indictment that I could only find four good players. A number of other players dropped in and out of the game, without exerting much influence. To compete against teams like Immanuel, we must have more players winning their positions, we must have more contributors; players willing to keep their eyes on the ball and attack it flat out; run and kick the ball into the spaces; take risks. For three quarters our ability to win contested possessions was quite pleasing, but when the game was in the balance, too

many players went missing. In the top division, you must play four consistent quarters and have solid contributions from all players, not just four.

We saw a fantastic team effort this weekend to secure a strong victory against St Peter’s. The skill and determination of each player made the game very entertaining to watch. It was pleasing to see the confidence of a number of players really improve during the game. Well done boys it was a great team effort.

Prep A Football St Peter’s College 24.11 (155) defeated CBC 1.0 (6) (19 May) We congratulate St Peter’s for an outstanding display of strong team football and for the execution of the skills required to successfully play Australia’s game. Our players did not really recover from St Peter’s early barrage of goals.

Football has again demonstrated that it is a great leveller.

Two weeks ago, our team thrashed a Sacred Heart College team by a similar margin. Nevertheless, this eager bunch of developing players has the capacity, and has promised, to throw out a genuine challenge to other teams and we anticipate a close match this Saturday against Immanuel.

Wil Strange played a fine hard working game in attack. He was supported by Zachery Camerlengo (On-Baller), Harrison Webb (wing), and George Moutzouris (mainly defence) gave valuable four quarter efforts.

Immanuel College 11-6 (72) defeated CBC 2-6 (18) (May 26) We played a strong and skilful Immanuel team on the wide expanses of the Camden Oval.

Our boys played with commendable energy and enthusiasm but ultimately we could not match the standard of our opponents. It was reassuring to see our players trying hard and lifting their performance following a massive defeat the previous Saturday.

Credit goes to our three team leaders who lifted the team by example. Laurence Kenmore returned to form with a solid four quarter effort. Harrison Webb won the ball against the odds on many occasions.

Jordan Altamura is a versatile and outstanding contributor.

We urge our players to maintain the energy and enthusiasm for the matches ahead.

Prep B Football Pembroke 14.7 (91) defeated CBC 2.5 (17) (19 May) Best Players: M Frederick, G Moutzouris, L Cockram The boys battled hard in what were pretty tough and challenging conditions. They had their fair share of the ball, but couldn’t capitalise on the scoreboard.

Sacred Heart 6.10 (46) defeated CBC 0.3 (3) (26 May) INSIGHT

The boys fought hard all day and competed really well. We were very undermanned due to the flu sweeping through the team, so we ended up with a few less players than the opposition. Had we had our full quota, we would have given them a real shake.

Year 3 Football Lighting Carnival – Unley Oval We had a great day for the carnival and the heavens stopped the rain for the entire event. The boys played 5 games today with 3 wins and 2 losses. Our approach to each game today was fantastic and the boys are now coming together like a real professional outfit.

There were great individual and team efforts across the field and I am really impressed to see team efforts like handballs to the running player and support for the contested ball.

We had 3 great wins against Belair/St John’s, Coromandel Valley and Mitcham.

Goal Scorers: Cooper Pool (2), Blake McDonough (1), Hunter Dwyer (1) and Asher Bemmer (1) As for best players I think everyone gets a vote today. Well done.

I would also like to thank all the helpers today -- Ms Williams did a great job with the rotations etc. and the Dads pitched in to goal umpire. Thanks to all for the oranges.

rugby Under 18 Rugby CBC 3T 0C 0P 15 St Peters 3T 0C 0P 15 Best Forward: C Binyon Best Back: D Bagshaw Best Tackler: B Vatzlavic Best on Field: B Jackman / G Focarelli / L McGee What a disappointing result. We played one man down in the first half and were 15 nil at half time. An injury in the second half saw us two men down and this did impact on our ability to defend. Disappointingly we had our ball within five meters of our try line for at least 75% of the time but white line fever in the second half saw us not convert our effort into points. Still, 14 guys playing as a team was awe inspiring. Well Done you did yourself and our college proud.

Under 16 Rugby Pembroke 4T 2C 0P 24 defeated CBC 1T 0C 0P 5 Best Forward: Charlie Meyer Best Back: Charlie Pickford Best Tackler: Adrian Condello Best on Field: Charlie Meyer Debut Players: Tom Hicks, Joel Pepper, Lachlan Harris, Charlie Pickford It was the boy’s second hit out of the season and with the wet conditions it did not make for a pretty game especially with the lack of forwards. In saying this, the players showed great fight tackling well and running great lines in the backs. Whilst the score doesn’t quite reflect how close of a contest it was we just needed to work harder to capitalise on their mistakes and reduce ours. Get to training lads!

Soccer Year 10A Soccer CBC 5 defeated Blackfriars 0 (19 May) CBC 10As game against Blackfriars started with just enough players to commence. The boys’ first goal took some build up, but they got there eventually, with their great passing and control. Jesse F had the right pass to Jackson O’D so that he could slot it through and get the first goal of the game! The game was slow but there were great passes being made and the defenders were all working hard. Once again the boys in the mid section helped Jackson score his second of the game.

With Luca C out due to injury it meant that the defending boys had to work extra hard holding off Blackfriars attacking forwards. The second half started and both sides were determined to increase their scores. As CBC dazzled the opposition, Blackfriars became frustrated and were losing their game. CBC pounced on this opportunity and quickly scored a couple goals, one by Jesse F and another from Ganesh W. Eventually both teams began to tire but CBC still had a little more fight left resulting in a great goal from Andrew T, to end the game 5-0.

Men of the Match for this game were Jordan Jackson O’D and Andrew T for their tremendous efforts in the forward line and midfield.

Our next match is away against St Peter’s College. Kick off at 8.15am; be there 7.45am for warm-up.

Year 9A Soccer CBC 5 defeated St Ignatius 2 Goal Scorers: Alex Caporella 2, Lucas Pizzino 2, Zak Waters CBC was off to a great start scoring the first 2 goals, but then towards the end of half time St.Ignatius pressured the defensive and scored. Half time came and we were up 2-1.

In the second half we dominated the game by scoring 3 goals. In the dying minutes they scored a ripper goal, but it wasn’t enough for them to get the victory. CBC played a very good game and deserved to get the win, and hoping for another win next week.

Year 4/5A Soccer CBC 5 defeated St Andrews 0 This weekend saw the Year 4/5 A soccer team travel to St Andrews. The heavy rain in the proceeding days made the pitch very wet.

The boys started the game well taking control from the first whistle resulting in the boys taking a 2-0 lead into half-time.

The goal of the half coming from Daniel Morbedelli, with a strike from just outside the penalty area that was to hot for the keeper to hold and ended up in the top corner. The other goal of the half came from Michael Izzo.

The second half was in the main one way traffic, with St Andrews only having one shot on goal which was dealt with by a good stop from Luke Zselga, who stuck out a strong hand and cleaned up by Kian Bird with a goal line clearance before the St Andrews strikers could pounce.

Some good passing football saw three further goals scored

by Nick Franchese, Daniel Bressan and Luca Tremboli.

All in all this was a strong performance from the whole team, which showed that they are fast becoming a very good passing team with the ability to challenge any team during the season.

Year 4/5B Soccer Saint Ignatius 3 defeated CBC Lions 1 Our third game of the season saw our defence a bit under pressure but still able to get the ball to James who scored our only goal. The rain started to fall and our players started slowing down.

Saint Ignatius was very competitive and our defence could not stop the 3 goals that they scored.

Well done CBC Lions Keep working on our skills.

table tennis Open C/D Table Tennis CBC defeated Blackfriars On a damp, cold, Friday afternoon I steered the bus with a team and a half into the inner Northern suburbs. There was a minute’s silence when we passed what had been Julie’s Dumplings on Prospect Road where we celebrated INTERCOL last year. Things change, Julie has moved on but the ever resourceful team suggested I double park in Gouger opposite Dumpling King after the game. I mentioned risk analysis, duty of care and my illustrious teaching career.

They got the career bit.

According to our statistician we won by two games. This augurs well for this year’s INTERCOL with or without the Julie or her dumplings.

We contemplated change, steamed or pot stickers and parking on Gouger as we wheeled our bicycles down Frome Road into the fading light.

Year 8/9 Table Tennis CBC 9 (260) defeated Mercedes College 5 (166) Best Players: Singles: Branden Tran, James Baddams, Jai Lunghi, Ivan Bucalo, Andrew Hockley, Jason Huang, Richard Soeun, Alex Kern

Doubles: Ryan Santos and Christian D’Addario The whole team played with great spirit, winning many hard-fought contests. Our Singles players were particularly strong taking 8 of the 10 games contested! We would also like to thank the supportive parents who always come to see their sons play, even on the coldest of nights.

This Friday 1 June will be our last home game for the term.

There is no game on the Friday of the June long weekend.

The last two games are played away against Marryatville High School and St John’s Grammar School.

Homelessness week is a time when we focus on how fortunate we are, and that other men, women and children, however, live on the streets of Adelaide.

In conjunction with St Vincent de Paul, you are invited to be part of our CBC Sleepout, to gain some appreciation of the issues that surround homelessness and to advocate for those in this predicament.

This event will be under full staff supervision, is a great way to represent CBC and gain some appreciation of what it really means to be homeless.

In the coming weeks, we ask all members of the community to please bring: jumpers, jackets, beanies, scarfs, blankets & non-perishable canned food.

I extend to you warm greetings from the National Office of Edmund Rice Education Australia.

Today, I write to inform you that the College Principal, Mr Noel Mifsud will be undertaking Professional Renewal Leave during Term Three of this year ‐ from 16 July until 21 September.

I am also pleased to announce that in Noel’s absence, the College Deputy Principal, Mr Shaun Clarke will be taking on the role of Acting Principal. I congratulate Shaun on his appointment and know that he will be well supported by the entire CBC community during this time.
