From The Acting Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers, Next week is Child Protection Week (3rd to 9th September). This Sunday is Child Protection Sunday and highlights the preventive efforts of the Church in the area of Child Abuse. This Sunday calls all Catholics and members of our College community to be part of making the future safer for children and not be paralysed by shame, anger or hurt but seek to build a safe community for all.

Our College is committed to the child protection of each student within our community. All our staff complete a “Reporting Child Neglect and Abuse” one-day course and are involved in refresher sessions every three years.

We are also integrating child protection programs within our curriculum with strategies that can be used by our students to keep themselves safe. We are called as Christians to respect the dignity of all human beings, keeping safe particularly those who are young and

It was obvious from the students’ faces that they thoroughly enjoyed the evening playing games (especially dodge ball) and spending time with their father or important male companion. Congratulations to all Junior Campus staff for the organisation of the evening. In particular, thank you to Sue O’Connor who did a great deal of work behind the scenes.

Year 10 PLP & Year 12 Trial Exams The Year 10 students are attending their PLP placements (work experience) this week. Their successful completion of this placement experience is vital to them completing their PLP course which is a compulsory requirement of the SACE. Likewise, our Year 12 students are sitting their trial exams. These exams will provide important feedback to our Year 12 students as they prepare for their final exams in November. The results of their trial exam will be included in their Term 3 reports which will be distributed at the end of this term.

Sports Day – SANTOS Stadium Parents are reminded that the whole school Sports Day will occur next Tuesday 4 September at the SANTOS Stadium. All students at the Junior Campus and Year 7 students will be transported by bus to and from the venue. All students in Years 8 - 12 will need to find their own way to and from the stadium on the day. Sports Day

will commence at 9.00am. All students are required to wear their “House” colour. This day is not optional for students and any student absent on the day will be required to produce a medical certificate.

All parents should have received a letter outlining the details of the day this week.

Counsellor’s Corner Casting the First Stone “There should be harsher penalties for violent youth,” “I think all homosexuals should be lined up and shot,” “Be tough on crime,” “lock them up and throw away the key.” “I would fix them”... How often we hear people saying such things as this. The Jewish Law in Christ’s time was to stone to death a woman “having an affair.”

Neighbours brought to Jesus such a woman, “making her stand there in full view of everyone.” They tested Jesus but he, “started writing on the ground with his finger” (I wonder was he writing something about the man involved!) “If there is any one who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” They left one by one and Jesus said to the women, “has no one condemned you... Neither do I condemn you, go away and do not sin any more.” (John 8: 3-11) We should have beliefs and act on them. We should stand up for our convictions but we need to do this in a responsible way. Talk about your beliefs, be involved in non-violent groups who promote these same beliefs and writing to newspapers and government leaders, are all-important.

Have convictions, as they are essential for life. Realise we cannot force another to agree with us by using violence or being hateful. People are far more likely to listen when they feel someone is genuinely concerned about their welfare. By sticking to our convictions and using the right approach we may be able to convince someone of the logic of our point of view. Living our beliefs is essential. You may not agree with the actions of others but accept the person who is acting that way.

Principal Tours Principal tours occurred this week at both the Junior and Senior Campus. The Junior Campus tours were on Tuesday 28 August and the Senior Campus on Wednesday 29 August. There was a large group of parents that attended both days. If you have friends or relatives who wish to enrol their son in 2013 they will need to enrol now as we have very limited vacancies in some year levels. Enrolment applications for 2014 need to be submitted to the College by the end of Term 3. Please contact our Registrar Mrs Jenny Dunncliff on 8400 4210 for further information.

Show Day - Change of date Parents are reminded that the Show Day will now be on Thursday 13 September. The College will conclude at 12.30pm at both campuses to allow the opportunity for families to attend the Royal Adelaide Show. Given the College is providing a half-day we would appreciate it if students are not absent on other days while the Royal Show is occurring.

Ann Bayetto Last week Ann Bayetto from Flinders University ran a workshop for our whole staff on developing differentiated curriculum within subject areas. Anne has been a mainstream, special class and adaptive education teacher and a district-wide disability support coordinator. She has also been a member of the DECS Learning Difficulties Support Team, has worked in the DECS Early Years Literacy Project and has worked closely with the Specific Learning Difficulties Association (Speld) in South Australia. She reminded us that some 18.5% of the Australian population have some form of disability and that many children have hearing and vision impairment that inhibit their success as learners. Anne stated that all parents should have their son’s hearing and vision checked regularly to ensure they are not disadvantaged in the classroom. The teaching staff is working collaboratively with Anne to develop appropriate curriculum plans and strategies in the classroom that allow every student to be successful.

Students Receiving Sacraments Students from the Junior and Senior Campus will be receiving their sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist this weekend. The liturgy for their Confirmation is this Friday 31 August at 7.00pm and the mass for their First Eucharist is on Sunday 2 September at 11.00am. Both are occurring at St Francis Xavier Cathedral and will be celebrated by Archbishop Philip Wilson. All members of our College community are welcomed to attend. Thank you to Mr Bruce Were, Sr Kanistal and Mr Rory Harris for all their preparations.

Also, Tevita (David) Maka and Nam Hoang Huu Nguyen from our College whose families are parishioners of

Croydon Park Parish, received the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Holy Communion.

Both David and Nam were confirmed by Archbishop Philip Wilson DD JCL in St Margaret Mary’s Church, Croydon Park on 28 June 2012, and received their First Holy Communion in July 2012, in St Margaret Mary’s Church from Fr Maurice Shinnick PP. Congratulations to both students.

Father’s Day This weekend is Father’s Day. A day to give thanks and blessings for our fathers and the role they play in our lives. Please keep in our prayers all fathers, both living and deceased.

prospective school for so many. It has reinforced for me the strength of all-boys schools as places where young men can, without pressure, try activities that might once have been regarded as areas of expertise for girls.

The Acting Deputy Principal With Year 12s on trial exams and Year 10 away on work experience it has been a quieter week on campus.

Nevertheless much has been happening. The Junior Campus assembly last Friday was smaller as the Year 5 and 6 classes were attending a musical production.

It was a joyous occasion as awards were given to the boys who read many books during book week. It was heartening to hear boys, who are supposed to be reluctant readers compared to girls, talking about their favourite book. As well it was pleasing to be able to present award certificates to those who had achieved their best that week.

I have also been helping with several Principal’s tours during this week -- one at the Junior Campus and two here at the Senior Campus. There is something energising about meeting prospective parents and students and listening to their questions and dreams and hopes for the future. It is indeed a sign of health for the school to see so much interest in CBC as a

I visited Mrs Palmer’s Year 7 class twice this week. The first time was to answer questions about what a brother is and how our life is different to that of a priest. They had intelligent and thoughtful queries. The second time was to give a practical introduction to the Mass. I was led to reflect on the change over the past forty years, from when students in Catholic schools often met and were taught by brothers and nuns, to the present when they hardly meet us. I certainly found this to be one of the highlights of my week.

Finally, the sad news in the paper about the young man on life support after being king hit at a night club reminds me of how important it is to educate our young men about the need to control their temper and not to punch or use violence against others even when provoked. It is a hard lesson sometimes to learn. It is something we will make a stand on especially in sporting contests.

Comic-Con Week Arts Coordinator What do we do in the music program at CBC and why?

As a curriculum coordinator for the music program I expect to walk into classrooms and see students rehearsing and performing. Performance is what attracts students to a program and what keeps them in a music program. The music department is keen to provide performance opportunities for our students and the challenge is always to find the appropriate venue, audience and repertoire.

This term the Music Captains organised a “Flashback” evening where audience members were treated to high quality music of the 50s, 60s and 70s. The evening was a resounding success in terms of entertainment and fundraising.

Another innovation was the Piano recital held in Term 2.

Audience numbers exceeded one hundred parents and friends and the Brothers House was excellent in terms of ambience and sound quality. In Term 4 there will be separate recitals for guitar students and vocal students.

On Monday, 10 September the Junior School will hold a Gala. What a great word and what a wonderful idea.

The Gala will showcase all the students in Year 3 – Year 6. The evening will also showcase the work of some of the Senior Boys. The venue is the JS music room and the evening has two time slots:

Last week we celebrated Book Week across both campus libraries with a whole range of events to highlight the importance of reading and to bring storytelling to life. The Senior Campus library celebrated Book Week by hosting a Comic-Con (convention) which was something new and brought the fans of the comic genre out of the woodwork and into the library.

The scene was set with an eye-catching display of staff members holding their favourite comic book, which demonstrated that comics have been a popular item for quite some time! The Adelaide Comic Centre also provided an incredible assortment of movie posters that transformed the library, along with the stand-up comic characters that were displayed in the main library window.

These characters also doubled as the main prize for our ‘Create a Comic Strip’ competition, where students have been invited to write a short comic strip involving a superhero and CBC. I look forward to reading the entries with interest, with the competition closing Friday 31 August.

The last event for the week was the Adelaide Comics Centre stall which was set up in the library at lunch time displaying an extensive range of comics that were available to purchase. The boys enjoyed the opportunity to browse the range of comics and do some shopping while at school, with much excitement and many successful purchases made. I hope students enjoyed reading the comics as well as the whole Comic-Con experience.

So, after a fabulous week I would like to thank the people that supported the CBC Comic-Con ensuring it was success: the Adelaide Comic Centre, the library team, especially Mrs Angela Barry for her help and humour along the way, the IT staff, Mr Alex Ly, and all staff members brave enough to have their photo taken for the Comic Book display.

In the early days of the College the sports played were football, cricket and handball with handball being the most popular and so a decision was made to build a handball court. On 29 August 1908 the College handball court was officially opened by Patrick McMahon Glynn, the Adelaide Member of Federal Parliament. The CBC handball court was famous throughout Adelaide and is fondly remembered by generations of old scholars. The decision to pull it down in 2002 was a difficult one but necessary so that we would have enough space to build the Chapel.

Science Week

Coinciding with the National Science Week, the Br Ernest Smith Science Week consumed CBC. The week started with a few boys visiting the Gilles Plains TAFESA with Ms Elleway. Gilles Plains TAFESA offers certificate and diploma courses in Animal and Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences and Building Trades. The Year 10 cohort was treated to an excellent presentation by three PhD students from Adelaide University Geo-Sciences. Their message was a simple one: there are many opportunities for Geo-Science graduates with a general science degree and honours. The Stage 1 Geology class listen to the same presenters then travelled to the Convention Centre for the SACOME Environmental Open Day. Tuesday was the launch day of the Science Week House competitions. The Year 7 made safety cages for eggs from drinking straws, the Year 8 built towers from 20 sheets of newspaper, the years built balsa and popstick bridges and the senior students made mouse trap cars. Unfortunately we were not able to organise the weather and the final judging of the completion will take place over the next two weeks. The Year 12 Biology students travelled to the Waite Campus to visit the APCFG and participate in the Get into Genes program. The junior

staff were informed and entertained by the ASTA representative on online science resources and the middle school staff judged the CBC entries for the Oliphant Science Awards. The Stage 1 Chemistry students were visited by Mr Tony Farror from SA Health who addressed them on the management of the water treatment and recycling systems of regional South Australia. The highlight of the final day of Br Smith Science Week was the Junior School assembly where three Year 10 students demonstrated a number of science experiments, producing pops and bangs to the delight of the students.

With such a busy schedule it was not possible to fit all of the activities into one week. Consequently the Skywatch Planetarium and the RiAus presentation were moved to subsequent weeks.

On behalf of the science faculty I would like to thank all of the CBC staff and students for participating in the Science Week and I look forward to the 2013 Br Ernest Gregory Smith Science Week.

Oliphant Awards This year the Junior School had 5 entries into the Oliphant Science Awards, all students in grades 3-5. There were 3 Scientific Inquiry entries, 1 Multimedia and 1 Crystal Investigation. While none of the entries were award winners, recognition should be given to Cooper Stuart and Jamie Fry on their dedication to the Crystal Investigation as well as Thomas Grech, Sam Tabotta and Liam Baccas on their Scientific Inquiry entry, an experiment on what materials are needed to make a flexible impact protection.

Assistant Principal - Junior Campus Dear Parents and Friends, As Father’s day approaches we will pay homage to the fathers in our lives. Last Friday evening the Junior Campus staff held our annual Father and Son evening – honouring you, the men in our students’ lives.

Around 250 people attended on a cold and dark night.

The evening commenced with a BBQ cooked by our dedicated Parents and Friends Committee.

We gathered together for a Father’s day prayer and gave away a signed league soccer ball generously donated by John Kosmina, Coach of Adelaide United and his wife, one of our very esteemed TRTs at the Junior Campus, Mrs Aly Barrass. Our Junior Campus staff arranged for some fun activities such as Art, Mini Golf, Dodge Ball on the roof top, iPad games and Puzzles, Maths Puzzles, Chess, Board games and Reading Time in the library.

The evening concluded with a Father/Son/Teachers Tug of War - lead by Guy Moten.

It was a fabulous night and I would like to sincerely thank everyone who attended, as well as those who stepped in for the boys who do not have a special dad in their lives. Thank you to our P&F for cooking the ever popular BBQ, Brother Michael Flaherty, Mr Ian Hamilton - honorary dad to one of our little boys - Mr Shaun Clarke, Acting Principal, and every JC Staff Member who gave up their time to arrange the great activities, and especially to Mrs Susan O’Connor, my PA for coordinating and setting up the event. Thank you to Mr Baird and Mr Were for contacting the Crows and Port Power who generously donated memorabilia.

I leave you with this reflection: WHAT DOES A FATHER LOOK LIKE? A father wants to save you from making mistakes. But he lets you find your own way, even when he bleeds when you get hurt. He holds you up even when you are sad, disciplines you when you break the rules, breaks into ecstasy and pride when you succeed and believes in you even when you fail. When people tell him he is wasting his money, he says he is not raising money but children! Fathers are the men that have to be dragon slayers, fanatic about improbable resources and possibilities. Average Fathers have patience, good Fathers have more patience, great Fathers have an ocean of patience.

Junior Campus RE Coordinator Dear Families and Friends This Sunday’s Gospel is a reminder that the time has come for those listening to Jesus to consider carefully the choice to follow him.

It is not only his opponents who must decide, but his followers too -- his disciples who also have been scandalized and disturbed by his words. Jesus leaves his followers free, neither asking them to stay, nor giving them permission to go. Their choice -- this crisis moment is personally theirs and ours.

John 6:60-69 Jesus asks those who are still with him one of the most moving of gospel questions: ‘Do you also wish to go away?’ Peter has come to a graced time, a moment of recognition of who Jesus really is and confesses ‘we believe, we know that you are the Holy one of God.’

This Gospel reading is a pertinent reminder to those young people who are confirming the baptismal promises that their parents and godparents made for them in Baptism when they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this Friday night.

Sacramental Program For 2012 This Friday night will conclude our Sacramental Program for 2012 with a ceremony at St Francis Xavier Cathedral at 7.00pm. On Sunday, they will receive their First Holy Communion at the 11.00am Mass.

As these young people complete this phase of their faith and formation journey we should be reminded that the goal of the sacramental process is not to ‘get’ confirmed but to be the beginning of a life-long commitment of faith. It is vital to continue to support the formation of your son’s faith for the liturgy, through the liturgy and from the liturgy.

It is the responsibility of Parents and Sponsors to support them in their personal faith journey throughout their whole life.

Please keep these boys in your prayers.

Year 9 Green Duke of Edinburgh Adventure Camp On the 23rd of August, 9 Green attended the Duke of Edinburgh Practice Camp, to complete the adventurous journey segment of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. The camp took place at Woodhouse, a campsite and outdoor activity centre in the Adelaide Hills. We arrived at the campsite and were immediately introduced to Luke, an instructor from Wilderness Escape Outdoor Adventures Pty Ltd. He explained to us which activities we were to partake in, and the rules of the camp. After Luke was finished talking to us, we proceeded to the High Ropes.

We made our way to the High Ropes Woods and were introduced to two new instructors, Kate and Tom. We were then given an explanation about the high ropes, and were then given the chance to practise our belaying. For one person to participate on the high ropes, there also has to be a belayer, a backup belayer and an anchor. We practised our belaying using the demonstration area, so that nobody would get injured if someone made a mistake. After an ample amount of practice, we moved on the high ropes. They consisted of the leap of faith, the wooden bridge and the rope walk.

We spent a while on these activities until we moved to the climbing wall and flying fox, which was an amazing experience for everyone.

After this, we settled down and went back to the provided shelter to cook out dinner. We used a trangier -- a methylated spirits stove -- to cook our food, which turned out well for all of us.

After dinner, we sat down by the fire and shared key points about our day. This lasted for about

five minutes, until the rain settled back in and we were forced to move under the shelter, where we continued our discussion. Along with Ms Barreira, Mr Skrzypiec, Mr Hamilton and our instructor Tom, we played games and evaluated our time on the first day of camp.

The next day, we woke bright and early at seven o’clock. Once all of us were out of our tents and together, we started to cook breakfast, which consisted of bacon, eggs and pancakes. After we had finished breakfast, we were led by Tom to a location within Woodhouse where we constructed billycarts and raced them in four teams. Due to the heavy rain, we were unable to race them outside, so we competed under shelter. Each team raced on four occasions, and their times were combined to obtain their total. The team with the lowest total time was declared the winner.

After we had finished with the billycart races, we took the bus to beneath Mount Lofty, where we climbed to the summit and beheld the view of Adelaide from above. After stopping for a lunch break, we then continued on to Waterfall Gully.

The walk took about two hours in total, but the end view was worth it. Once we reached our destination, we could see the massive waterfall at Waterfall Gully, where a bus was waiting to take us back to CBC. This was our Duke of Edinburgh camp, and it was a worthwhile experience for us all.

University & TAFE Applications A reminder that University Applications close at the end of this month, while TAFE applications through the SATAC website will open at the end of September.

Students are encouraged to apply for both University and TAFE if they are unsure of their success at this stage. TAFE applications are free this year, and there are no tuition fees for Certificate 1 or Certificate 2 courses.

Flinders University Visit Flinders University will be here on Monday 10 September at lunch time to talk about new courses and Flinders options. They will also outline the benefits of undergoing the Flinders UniTest, which we will run here at school on Thursday 20 September.

Year 10 Debating Round 5 win sees Year 10 in Quarter Finals Glenunga International High School White 10 versus Christian Brothers College Blue 10 Short Preparation debate (90 minutes): “That School Sports Days are a Waste of Time” By a two point margin, the adjudicator awarded this debate to the negative team from CBC, Jacob Sunter, Michael Cutufia and Hamish Richardson (Best Speaker).

Fresh from the Inter-Col Competition on Monday evening, two evenings our speakers were keen to put into practice all they had learned over the season with regard to key points on minimal cue cards, a clear statement of the team case, defensive argument and strategic rebuttal against all opposition points, eye contact and humour and an engaging manner that would challenge both opponents and audience. With polished team and individual performances, we slipped into eighth place on Debating SA’s ranking, narrowly making the Quarter Finals in a result which truly reflected the dedication, enthusiasm and enjoyment of the season by parents, our most loyal supporters in all weathers, the debaters and coach.

football Year 2/3 Football Coromandel Valley 11.2 (68) defeated CBC 3.4 (22) We headed up the hill to Coromandel Valley to take on one of our toughest opponents and it was a very toughly contested game. Regardless of the final score at 3 quarter time there was only 10 points in the game thanks to our defensive play by the back line who held up so well against a side that loves to run the ball forward.

Although the last quarter was controlled by Coromandel Valley we can be very proud of our first 3 quarters, in fact after the game I had several Coromandel Valley people comment to me on how good our squad is.

To explain how well our season has been this year you have to go back to round 6 for our last loss, the boys really have come together as a great group of players and their talents are showing with more use of the handball and kicking to a leading player.

Well it’s the last round this week so we will train hard Tuesday and enjoy the last game of the season.
