From The Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers, This is an exciting week for our Community.

The Year 12 cohort began exams this week with Italian oral exams conducted on Monday. Year 12 students will finish their formal studies on Friday. They will be farewelled in a Mass and Parents and Friends Family BBQ on Friday. I am always so proud of our exiting students who have respected and embraced our respectful culture at CBC which does not accept a ‘muck-up day’ mentality. Students are reminded that we are proud of our history in never having to preclude a student from sitting exams or attending graduation because of inappropriate behaviour.

Br Barry comes with enormous experience as an educator as Deputy Principal in various schools in Victoria and Tasmania, Retreat Coordinator at the Edmund Rice Retreat House at Amberley, Executive Director of the Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality Centre in the United States and recently a team member of the Community Renewal, Enrichment and Animation Team (CREAT) with the Oceania Province.

Board Meeting A full meeting of the Board was held on Monday night with the highlight being a formal dinner organised

by Mrs Lee and students from Year 12 Hospitality.

Food quality and service was restaurant standard and I commend Mrs Lee and our students on their delectable menu. Our meeting began with a prayer and reflection on the life of one of CBC’s founding Brothers, Br Ambrose Treacy. Matters discussed by the Board included: • 2013 Financial Budget • Setting of 2013 school fees • Master Planning including a proposed Trade Training Centre • CBC Enrolment Maximum.

Counsellor’s Corner Ways to Express Healthy Anger.

If we have been hurt and are angry, it is a good idea to stop and allow all the feelings of anger to rise to the surface. We should own and acknowledge we are angry and appreciate ourselves in being able and willing to feel the truth of our anger. Express the anger as honestly and as soon as we can to the appropriate person or persons. Do this calmly and rationally without judging others. “I felt angry when you....” Confrontation should be a well thought out, dispassionate, loving and a firm statement to someone we care about. The aim is to make our point, maintain our self-respect and not to hurt the other person. We want to point out how certain behaviour is causing trouble. We need to be open to make changes in ourselves. How often we find the other person had no intention of hurting us and that there was some misunderstanding. The joy of reconciliation is one result of our courage. This is not easy but it better than being stuck in our anger that leads to depression, tiredness, hurt, frustration, isolation and fear. All of this can be brought to the Lord in our prayer and his help will give us strength and courage.

At the whole school assembly last Friday we sat in 1 minute’s silence to honour the memory of an inspirational 14 year old Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai. I also spoke about her at this year’s Speech Night. This courageous girl, a vocal advocate for the rights of girls to be educated, was subject to a recent assassination attempt. Christ’s death on the cross taught us there is no greater sacrifice to make for your beliefs than to give of your life. Fortunately Malala is on the road to recovery.

Life, however, is also full of hope and happiness. I was highly amused by an article reported this week in the London Daily Telegraph, also from Pakistan, about Headmaster Major Geoffrey Langlands who has to postpone his retirement once again - at the age of 94!

Major Langlands, a former British colonial officer who has lived in Pakistan since independence and has educated generations of political leaders, was due to step down as principal of his school in Chitral, a region close to the border with Afghanistan, this weekend on his 95th birthday.

But the British woman selected to take over has failed to secure a work visa in time. Instead Major Langlands is steeling himself to remain in the job until the spring. “I’m quite prepared to carry on. I’ve been here long enough. A few more weeks doesn’t make too much difference,” he said “The school is wonderful,” (the incumbent said.) “The teachers are committed and the children are desperate to learn.”

Made in the Image of God During Term 4 students in both the Junior and Senior Campuses will again undertake studies in the MITIOG or Made in the Image of God Human Sexuality Program.

In an excerpt from a letter to the Catholic Community Archbishop Philip Wilson writes: Dear Educators in Faith, All in our community of believers have a crucial role to play in educating our children in faith.

Families are the ‘domestic church’ in which children first receive spiritual nourishment and learn how to live in accordance with God’s plan. The Church calls parents to embrace this task wholeheartedly and supports them in this precious privilege and responsibility.

Education in human sexuality is a vital component of education within the Catholic faith as through this education students explore our Christian vocation to love which leads us into a responsible and fulfilled Christian life. When such education is undertaken in the formal context of schooling, it requires a high level of partnership between parents and teachers. This partnership is fundamental to the Made in the Image of God program.

This program is firmly based upon Catholic moral teaching and calls upon such sources from the Tradition as sacred scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, papal documents such as Gaudium et Spes and Familiaris Consortio and other important Vatican documents such as Educational Guidance in Human Love and The Truth and Meaning of Human Sexuality.

Made in the Image of God provides you, as educators in faith, with a human sexuality curriculum that respects the dignity of the human person and is grounded in the human vocation to love. The holistic nature of human sexuality and our

core calling to live a responsible Christian life are key themes in this curriculum area.

We commend Made in the Image of God to you as the human sexuality curriculum for Catholic Schools in South Australia and we pray that, as educators in faith, you will enthusiastically embrace the privilege of leading students to a fullness of their humanity in Christ.

Catholic Schools Music Festival The College received a letter from the Founder of the Catholic Schools Music Festival Sr Colleen Roberts commending CBC and in particular Jordan Lennon for his performance of Queen’s immortal song We are the Champions at the 2012 Festival. Sr Colleen commented: “You blew everyone out of the water with the sheer professionalism and musicianship which you displayed.” The College congratulates Jordan on this most deserving accolade.

Conclusion In a Sunday Mail editorial written two weeks ago a member of the public wrote: This generation have rejected and ridiculed the principles and ethos that made for civilised and friendly society. They went on to say: We have embraced the culture of “me”. We have become inward-focused individuals and continue to spiral into being smaller and smaller beings. “Self ” is of prime importance, everyone and everything else is there to serve “me”. We have a choice - we can become black holes and suck the life out of everything, or we can become stars and shine for the benefit of the universe. And strangely, it seems, those who live to give are generally far happier than those who live for themselves.

I sincerely thank our students (and especially our departing Year 12 cohort) for not being the me generation- I thank you for letting your life, talent and generosity shine for the benefit of the universe. I wish you and our entire College community every blessing for the journey ahead.

From The Deputy Principal Understanding Our Students’ Digital World Our schooling system has changed radically from what we know of the past. Today’s students have not just changed incrementally from those of the past in slang, clothes, body adornments or styles but have entered a world where the dissemination of digital technology is occurring at a rapid pace.

In fact, our Reception through to Year 12 students have spent their entire lives growing up with this new technology. They have spent their entire lives surrounded by and using computers, digital music players, iPhones, emails, Facebook, etc. We know that, as a result of this proliferation of their digital world and the sheer volume of their interaction with it, today’s students think and process information fundamentally differently from their parents. Some refer to these “new” students of today as the D-generation or digital generation. They are all “native speakers” of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet. As you know, if you need to use a computer or set up a mobile phone you need only to ask your son.

If students today are integrated into our digital world where does it leave those who were born prior to this digital revolution? The term often used to describe this generation is “digital immigrants”; that is, it is like learning a new language where we might turn to the Internet second rather than first for information or we socialise differently with each other rather than sending texts, emails or spending countless hours on Face book in the evening.

Our challenge as a College community is to speak the language of our D-generation. They live in a world today where they are accustomed to receiving information really fast, where they like to multi-task, such as being on Facebook and doing homework (does this sound familiar!) and where they prefer to play games rather than do serious work. We of the pre-digital generation don’t often appreciate the new skills they have and often compare them to how we have always processed

information. Our students today want to be able to download information, hypertext, and use their mobile phones to gain information and find processes such as lectures, step-by-step logic and following instructions to be non-engaging. This is why we are seeing the increase in online university courses where students do not need to attend lectures and can download information at their own convenience.

We need to fully understand the digital world to which our students belong; their brains are wired up to this new way of thinking. As a college our challenge is to communicate in a language our students understand.

This doesn’t mean changing the meaning of what are important or good thinking skills but to develop appropriate methodology in classes which allow our students to use the executive functions in their brain.

This has been a focus in our college this year with our partnership with Professor Martin Westwell from Flinders University. The key is also to provide future curriculum options for students such as robotics, CAD design and access to digital technology. Next year the college will offering all our students from Year 7 – 12 access to 1:1 laptops in their schooling and introducing electrotechnology in our 2013 course options.

As educators we need to balance the content that needs to be covered in their schooling years with new and interactive ways to use digital technology that engage the students in their learning and maintain their motivation to be successful. Our students today live in a different world, a world that is continually accessible, where information on any topic can be easily downloaded; communication to others is only a push of a button (we don’t need to learn numbers anymore!) and products today need to be faster with the ability to have multi-functions. We need to be part of this rapidly changing world of the D-generation to open ourselves to new ways of learning to engage our students in our curriculum today.

Year 12 School Resources Return to Library We are sure that senior students are relieved and happy to be finishing their studies and are looking forward to a well-earned break. We ask that all Year 12 students return textbooks, laptop computers and library books to the Senior Campus Library straight after exams to enable staff to prepare resources for the 2013 school year. Students are asked to ensure they are returning the book they borrowed, and to clean any pen or pencil markings from the pages.

Also, students at the Senior Campus have the opportunity to win a Westfield Gift Voucher from the Library!!!!!!

From the Archives Br Leonard Lynch One of the early members of the Brothers’ community in Adelaide was Br Leonard Lynch, who taught at Wakefield Street for ten years from 1887-1897.

As an added incentive this year we are offering students the opportunity to win one of 2 Westfield Gift Vouchers (one for a Senior School student and one for a Middle School student) to the value of $100 each. Students will be issued with a ticket in the competition once they have returned all library resources.

Br Lynch was born in Ireland in 1855 and was taught at school by Br Ambrose Treacy, who was to become the founder of the Christian Brothers in Australia. He joined the Brothers and made the voyage to the colonies with Br Paulinus Egan, who spent much of the next fifty years teaching in Adelaide.

Good luck!

Br Lynch’s introduction to teaching Australian boys was immediate. One hour after he arrived by boat in Melbourne, he was asked to take a class so that Br Treacy could make funeral arrangements for a member of the community who had just died.

Teaching was what Br Lynch enjoyed most. It was said that after ten years in Adelaide he had travelled only a few of the city streets. He was not adventurous by nature and spent any spare time he had in the pursuit of study. He taught the Senior University class and was instrumental in building the College’s reputation for academic success. He was proud of the school and its achievements and wrote a number of articles and poems about the College, which he sent back to Ireland for publication.

Br Lynch died in Sydney on October 20th, 1918.

Br Patrick Jerome Barron Br Patrick Jerome Barron was Headmaster of CBC Wakefield Street from 1894-96. He came to Australia after having taught at many of the Brothers schools in Ireland. He guided the College through the economic depression of the 1890s through steady and capable administration.

Br Barron went on to become a member of the Provincial Council for thirty-nine years and Superior for twenty-three. When he started there were twenty-four communities of Brothers and when he retired from the Council in 1935 there were sixty-one. A testament to his leadership skills and the growing demand for a Christian Brothers education in Australia.

Assistant Principal - Junior Campus Dear Parents and Friends, It is hard to believe that we have been in our fantastic new school for almost one year. It is a privilege to come to work each and every day. This past year has seen many Principals from different schools around South Australia as well as nationally come to see our state-ofthe-art facility. The building has changed how teachers teach and teachers are now more than ever energised, and enthusiastic, and dynamic pedagogies are coming to the fore.

I would like to pay tribute to our College Principal Mr Noel Mifsud for having the courage to dream and bring his dream to reality.

Next Saturday 27 October we will be celebrating our first birthday, marked by a cocktail evening. Come along, get dressed up and enjoy! Live Music, Great Food and Drinks will be available. This is an adults-only event.

Please purchase tickets from the Junior Campus front office or Senior Campus finance office for $20. Both Noel and I look forward to seeing you there for what should be a great night.

Tonight, the Chess Centre Championship trophies will be awarded to students in all Independent, Catholic and DECS schools. Last year I discussed with Mr Tom Van Ruth about our Junior Campus boys playing chess, as in 2011 our boys played intra-school games and it was clearly evident that we had some very good strategic players As a result, we decided to enter our boys into the Independent Schools Chess Competition. Over 50 boys elected to play and so it is with enormous pride that I inform you that Jack Catherwood (Year 6) and Rees Silvestri (Year 3) will be awarded the highest commendation for their strategic skills and talent. All boys will again be able to play chess in 2013 in Terms 2 and 3.

I would also like to congratulate the following Junior Campus boys who received Speech Night Awards last Wednesday evening. The Angelus

Junior Campus RE Coordinator Dear Families and Friends Last Sunday’s Gospel tells the story of the rich young man. Mark deals with one of the troublesome issues which confronted the early Church. It was the issue of the gap that separated the wealthy from the poor. Mark presents Jesus as throwing up his hands at the sway that wealth has on people, even very good ones: “How hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is much harder for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle.” (Mark 10, 2425) The scandal was not so much what money can do to those who have it, though that is certainly a problem for some. Rather it was that wealth created a wall of separation between Christians who were well-off and other Christians who were struggling to survive. Once such walls are put in place, those on either side, rich and poor alike, become foreign and distasteful to one another. As a result, talk of unity within the Christian community becomes hollow. While Jesus proclaimed that God could forge unity out of such division, it is clear that he is disturbed by the separation that wealth can create.

Jesus did not criticise the young man for being rich.

We are told by Mark that Jesus looked on the young man and loved him. Jesus realized that he had been approached by a decent, good-living man with high ideals. Wanting something even better for the young man, Jesus challenged him not to let himself be controlled by what he owned but to let go of it for the sake of something better, for the sake of the kingdom, for the sake of a way of life that values others, that thirsts for justice, mercy and compassion.

This week’s Gospel Challenge at Christian Brothers College is all about having compassion for one another.

I think this gospel could be interpreted as follows: while material wealth and possessions provide us with security and the opportunity to pursue different opportunities, Jesus challenged the rich man not to be controlled by his sense of material worth but to consider ways to make a contribution to improving society.

This Gospel reminds me of William Glasser’s Choice Theory, which suggests that, while we are unable to change the world, by our thoughts and actions we are able to make a contribution to making our world a better place.

The word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It cuts all the way through to where soul and spirit meet, to where joints and marrow come together. It judges the desires and thoughts of a person’s heart. Hebrews 4, 12-13 Jesus, looking at the rich young man, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” At that statement, his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Mark 10, 17-30

Finally, it is my view this gospel message reminds me that the most profitable investments we can make are on the lives of people in need of love, care and attention.

The Angelus is an ancient prayer of the Church. Its origins are unknown, but some suggest it goes back as early as the 10th Century. The Bishops in SA have asked for the Angelus to be introduced into our schools.

Their hope is that through our creative embrace of the richness of the Angelus ritual and prayer, all in our school communities may come to know more deeply the loving presence (the grace) of God in their lives and the reality of Jesus Christ in our midst.

In Adelaide Archdiocese schools, the Archbishop is asking that the Angelus be prayed in Years 6 and 7, and this will commence during Term 4 in Year 6. If you would like more information regarding this initiative or a copy of this prayer please do not hesitate to contact me.

Junior School Scholastic Book Club Orders due Tuesday 23 October

R – 12 Counsellor My name is Jane Gaynor and at the commencement of this term I joined the Counselling Team at CBC. I am delighted to be working with the team to continue this vital work which includes supporting our students and working with staff and parents. Our counselling team at CBC aims to provide a confidential counselling service for students that supports the personal, emotional, social and intellectual development of each student within the CBC community.

Students can be self-referred, teacher-referred, or parent-referred and can access our service on an individual or group basis. Mediation services can also be provided as required to further support our student, staff and parent wellbeing. Our counselling team can also provide advice on appropriate referral options to other professional support agencies for students when necessary to support student wellbeing.

I am located on the Senior Campus Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Tuesday I am based on the Junior Campus. My email is jgaynor@cbc.sa.edu.au.

Spirituality Improves Mental Health Within the most recent edition of BioPsychoSocial Health, Jennifer Gibson provides some interesting insights into what benefits our wellbeing.

Quality of life is a subjective gauge of a person’s overall wellbeing and includes assessments and selfreports of physical health, mental health, functional abilities, emotional condition, social support, and spirituality. As healthcare continues to evolve and provide more complete, holistic care for patients, the importance of religion and spirituality is increasingly emphasised. And, with good reason, since new research indicates that spirituality is a central determinant of quality of life and it confers more positive benefits on mental health than on other factors.

Physical activity has long been known as influential on overall wellbeing and quality of life, but just what role religious practice plays in quality of life is still undetermined. The authors of the current study, published in Health and Quality of Life Outcomes, used a model that was similar to a validated assessment of physical activity to evaluate the effects of multidimensional factors on wellbeing, including religious practice. A total of 215 adults participated in the study by completing paper-and-pencil questionnaires and wearing a device that measured physical activity. The participants completed assessments of overall satisfaction with life, physical and mental health status, social support, confidence to engage in physical activity and complete self-care tasks, physical activity, and spirituality and religiousness.

Physical activity, social support, and spirituality showed the strongest influences on well-being and confidence in one’s abilities. And, more spiritual individuals reported a more positive overall health status than participants who did not report regular religious practice. There was a stronger association between spirituality and mental health than physical health. The authors concluded that spirituality’s influence on quality of life is largely mediated by mental health, and physical activity’s influence on quality of life is largely mediated by physical health.

Many studies have reported the benefits of spirituality on specific health outcomes, but few have reported its influence on global quality of life. Indeed, religious individuals experience lower morbidity and mortality than individuals who do not report regular religious practice, and religion confers a protective benefit against several physical and mental health disorders. While the mechanisms for these connections are not wellunderstood, evidence is mounting that spirituality and a perceived connection to a divine being (whomever or whatever that may be) give individuals a sense of control over their lives.

Spirituality and religious practice provide a connection to a world bigger than one’s self and provides a perspective that minimises day-to-day struggles and maximises timeless gains. No single factor guarantees positive wellbeing or mental health, but an abiding faith in a higher power seems a reliable place to start.

Senior C Tennis BADMINTON Open A Badminton Immanuel College 9 defeated CBC 2 Let’s consider this weekend’s round as a warm-up. Our opposition was rather strong on the day, but nevertheless CBC players gave it their all. We did win 2 games. Sei Thach and Hung Tran won a marathon 3 set game 20/22, 24/22, 22/20. For their stamina and endurance - congratulations!

Nathan Ha won his singles game. Many of the boys realised they are a bit rusty and now are looking forward to Tuesday after-school training. See you all there. Well played everyone!

CBC 8 sets (63 games) defeated Immanuel College 4 sets (34 games) A great start to the summer season! CBC played some excellent tennis on Saturday against a formidable opponent.

Mark Haydon-Potts/Michael Petrilli (6-1), Raisy Lopez/Mitch Jackman (6-0) and R Lopez/Anthony Kezzler (6-0), opened our account with impressive victories in the doubles. The Jackman brothers, Billy and Mitch, were unfortunate going down (5-6) in a closely fought contest. In the singles, Joel Nolan, playing at number 2 and 7, enjoyed a successful outing with comprehensive victories in both matches (6-4) and (6-0) respectively. Mark Haydon-Potts (6-0) and Michael Petrilli (7-5) continued with their good form and sealed the rubber for us. Billy Jackman and Anthony Kezzler tried hard but in the end were unable to get on top of their opponents, succumbing (3-6). Overall, a great team effort.

St Peter’s 7 defeated CBC 5

CBC 8/66 tied with Concordia 7/66

CBC put up a valiant battle against St Peter’s on the rooftop, playing in perfect conditions.

The 1st and 2nd doubles matches were won by CBC, with Jack Hamblin and Cooper Stankovich as 1st Doubles and Luke Teakle and Adam Skondras as the 2nd doubles, both scoring 6 games to 4.

In the Singles games both Jack and Michael Tran won 6 games to 3, while Luke Zounis was forced to go to “sudden death” after an evenly matched game threatened to head towards lunch time. He won 7 games to 6 after a tie breaker.

Well done, boys; a great effort!

Due to Concordia lacking a few numbers early on, CBC allowed them to bat first, and we started in sensational fashion by taking two early wickets and having Concordia reeling at 2/3. Their next partnership was more productive, piling on another 32 runs before Josh Gregorace and Will Clemente both managed to snag important wickets which handed us back the ascendancy in the match. Concordia, with the help of plenty of extras, managed to scrounge out a defendable total of 66. Multiple wickets were taken by Dominic Porcelli and Josh, with the latter showing plenty of promise with the ball.

CBC’s run chase started slowly, yet the boys showed strong defence. Concordia struggled to take wickets with Mr Buttfield’s new coaching recruit retiring most of our top order batsmen. Special mention goes to Ambrose Ronson who managed to compile a very handy 8 runs after feeling less than confident before his innings. It appeared unlikely that CBC would ever chase down the required total, however thanks to a dominant performance from Dom who top scored with 18 n.o. and cameo performances from Harry Isherwood and William, CBC battled to finish the innings 8/66.

The lads; happy to maintain their unbeaten streak for the year, did not want to participate in a ‘bowl off’ to decide the game, so the game was settled as a tie!

Thanks again to the Dad’s that helped with the scoring.

Tennis Drive Tennis CBC 7 defeated Woodcroft 2 An excellent start to the term -- brilliant singles wins from George Wong and Kyle Gaweda (both 6-0) were the highlights of the morning. George was in devastating form – pity those players who have to face him this term. Kyle was his usual dependable self, wearing down his opponent with clever returns and well-executed points. Kyle also teamed up with Brad Graham for a great doubles victory (62), and George combined with Jack Owens to come through in a tiebreaker 7-6 in a very even match up. Jack Quinn showed improved form and will be a very valuable player for the team this term and beyond.

VOLLEYBALL Open B1 Volleyball CBC 2 sets defeated Blackfriars 1 set We started strongly getting an early lead but began to slacken off later in the set, thinking we had the game won. This cost us, with the set coming down to the wire, eventually narrowly losing 27-25. After a quick pep talk from Sam Warren, we started the second set, not in the best fashion, but eventually we brought it back, again with a big lead, before losing 6 points in a row before coming back to win 25-21. Finally in the deciding set, we took charge early and kept a strong lead, easily winning 25-18. A great start to the season.

Open B2 Volleyball CBC 3 defeated Concordia College 0 What a great way to start the summer volleyball season!

Given that we have had limited practice and it is the first time that the team had played together, they worked sensationally well to very quickly beat Concordia in 3 straight sets. Clear communication and strong teamwork were the keys to their success. All players did a great job but the strong serves of Tom Melios-Traver (captain this week), Andy Yin and Nick Delaat caught the opposition off-guard and boosted the team’s confidence. An indirect thanks must go to Mr Curnow whose excellent teaching of volleyball skills in PE lessons paved the way for a win, particularly for our new players.

CBC versus St Peter’s

CBC began the game by dominating and maintained a marginal lead throughout the first and third sets, only to give the game away in the last few points.

Despite our loss, it was very encouraging to see the boys display so much more confidence than in Term 1. They communicated well throughout the game, although some hesitation in getting to the ball at times led to missed returns. The boys also demonstrated an improvement in their skill level, assisting and attacking well. The boys also managed to avoid holding the ball, a frequent foul in Term 1.

Well done to all players who most certainly gave it their all: Brendan Tran, Newton Quach, Tevin Odhiambo, Jackson Chau, Mushtaq Ahmad, Alex Hartley and Davida Maka.

Particular mention goes to our new team members -- Tevin who demonstrated very promising serves and Mushtaq who was an overall very energetic and consistent player.

The result was undecided as several CBC students failed to arrive for the match. The results for the games we could play were evening divided. It is a pity that some students from the other team couldn’t play the matches they were set for because our team was under-manned.
