CBC Offers Condolences On Thursday and Friday I am in Darwin to celebrate the life and death of two colleague principals who along with their taxi driver were tragically killed last week. I served closely with one of the Principals when I was Principal on the Tiwi Islands from 1993-1996.

I also sent a condolence message to CBC friend and professional colleague Dr Linda Vining whose husband also passed away last week.

CBC Final Board Meeting for 2012 The Board met on Monday night for the final meeting of 2012. On behalf of the Chairman I wish to thank all members of our Board who have contributed significantly throughout the year.

Sadly the Board says farewell to Mr Lindsay Denton who retires after 10 dedicated years of service. Mr Denton guided the College as Chair of the Finance Committee and his expertise and advice contributed significantly to the significant achievements of the Board during my time as Principal. These events include: the development of the Junior Campus, Opening of a third Campus with the CBC Community Children’s Centre, 21 % increase in enrolments over the past three years and the launch of the Trade Training Centre Development Project due to start on 10 December 2012. CBC is deeply indebted to the calibre and wisdom of this fine man.

CBC welcomes SA Commissioner for Catholic Schools CBC welcomed a school visit from the Director of Catholic Education (Dr Paul Sharkey), Executive Director EREA Dr Wayne Tinsey, and the newly appointed Chairman of the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools (SACCS) Professor Denis Ralph.

The Directors met with CBC Board Chairman Mr Chris Block and me to affirm the work of CBC and to discuss future enrolment levels which have significant implications on future capital development and growth.

I was deeply affirmed by their presence and offer my sincere gratitude on behalf of the CBC community for the support and encouragement provided by our governing bodies CESA, EREA and the Catholic Church in South Australia.

Mr Terry Roberts appointed EREA Regional Director Former CBC staff member Mr Terry Roberts, currently a Principal’s consultant with CESA, has been appointed to the position of EREA Director - Regional Support (Western Region) beginning next year. Mr Roberts will be part of the EREA National Leadership Team as well as working with the 7 EREA schools in SA and WA. Terry has worked within CESA for 33 years since beginning his teaching career at Christian Brothers College, Wakefield Street. In a letter to CBC Dr Wayne Tinsey writes: In some respects, he is returning to the charism within which he was formed as a student and teacher. He will also be offering his accumulated leadership skills and experience to a national educational organisation which was formed 5 years ago to oversee the growth and development of all schools in Australia within the Edmund Rice tradition.

Prayer A young girl from Sacred Heart School, Uganda wrote the following prayer for peace reminding us all children and adults alike that as stated in my introduction we are called by God to add colour to our lives and to live with childhood happiness, innocence, joy and peace.

I Painted Peace I had a box of colours – Bright, alive and bold I had a box of colours – Some warm, some very cold.

I didn’t have red for the blood of the wounded I didn’t have black for the cry of the orphans I didn’t have white for the face of the dying I didn’t have yellow for the burning sands.

But, I had orange for the joy of life; and green for the shoots and nests and blue for blue skies and pink for dreams and rest I sat down and painted peace.

From The Deputy Principal Learning: The Experience Of The Brain, Mind, Experience And School At Christian Brothers College one of our foundational values is “Excellence”. Our strategic plan states that: “Our College community provides an environment which challenges all to be committed to holistic learning and to achieving one’s full potential”. For learning to be successful we must be aware of the existing knowledge and understandings that students bring with them into the classroom. We need to involve learners actively in the learning process through questioning and discussion, and by creating appropriate tasks and activities. The use of formative assessment to provide frequent feedback is also important if learning with understanding is to be achieved rather than merely the ability to repeat facts or perform isolated skills.

This year the college has worked in partnership with Professor Martin Westwell from Flinders University to investigate the use of executive brain functioning within our classrooms. This has allowed us to integrate the use of metacognitive skills within our curriculum in a variety of subjects and curricular areas. It is by talking about their thinking that students’ understanding can be reinforced and developed. Research has demonstrated that students can be taught a range of strategies including the ability to predict outcomes, explain to oneself in order to improve understanding, note failures to understand, activate background knowledge, plan ahead and apportion time.

Throughout this year many of our faculties have had planning days to develop the new Australian Curriculum. This process has allowed us to reflect upon our pedagogy to ensure we integrate higher order thinking that allows students to recognise patterns and connections, put forward arguments and explanations and draw analogies that are intertwined with factual knowledge. For all our students it is essential that they are provided with continual feedback in their progression in a subject through some formative assessment.

Recently, Professor Dylan Williams was in Adelaide to speak on formative assessment in schools. He stated that a lot of the research on formative assessment was about different kinds of feedback... and what they found was that most of the feedback in schools is the least helpful in terms of what psychologists have found. There are lots of different ways of looking at feedback, but a very important way of looking at feedback is whether it’s ego-involving or task-involving.

So if you say to students that they did very well, that they did one of the best pieces of work in the class, that’s ego involving because it focuses on that person’s position in the class. Whereas, if you get feedback that’s says things like, well this is what you need to do to improve... then that focuses on the task. And what the research shows very clearly is that ego-involving feedback is rarely effective and, in fact, can lower achievement. So when students get grades and they can compare themselves with each other, where they get praise...the effects are usually or often zero and, sometimes, negative. In other words, in many cases rather than giving that kind of praise you would have been better off saying nothing and giving no feedback at all! Students given that kind of praise do less well than students given no feedback at all.

But what the research also shows very clearly is the conditions under which feedback is successful. The research shows, for example, that when the feedback focuses on what students need to do to improve, and, in particular, how to go about it... then they get very large impacts on student achievement. The challenge we have for our students today is to give them feedback that helps them move forward. We need to continually give students feedback that makes it clear that ability is incremental rather than fixed, because if we send the message to students that ability is fixed then they are likely to disengage and not meet their full potential as learners.

Another study found that looking at pornography influences teens attitudes towards sex, with teens who looked at more pornography had more unrealistic beliefs about sex – however another study directly contradicted this finding and suggested teens are well aware that it is fantasy. It seems the jury is still out on this one.

Arts Coordinator Music tech website available to CBC community This year a major area of development for the music department has been technology. With the introduction of SACE Music and Technology for Year 11 and Year 12 students, there has been an incentive to instruct boys in the lower years in sound recording and amplification.

The College of Sound and Music Production is a Melbourne-based institute that has worked on VET programs for many years. Their new website: www. tpnetwork.com.au has a series of interactive lessons that demonstrate the principles of the music industry in Australia, and sound engineering in particular. CBC is now a member school for TPN. The username is CBC and the password is tpna2013. The staff of the music department at CBC is excited by this opportunity to learn new skills -- recording student performances is a great way to improve performance and the more students at CBC have access to recording their work, the better the music program will be. Please take advantage of this resource and enjoy learning about another facet of music.

Guitar recital 2012 has been an interesting year in terms of new performance opportunities. The inaugural piano recital was held in Term 3 and Tuesday night witnessed our first guitar recital featuring the students of Mr Stephen Taylor. The evening was divided into two discrete concerts and the junior boys performed first. They were aided by music captain, Harrison Visintin, and drum teacher Mr Mark Meyer. The second concert began at 7.30pm and it was wonderful to see the complexity and variety of pieces on show. The music staff greatly appreciate all the music tutors at CBC and congratulate Stephen Taylor for his inspirational teaching at the college.

Instrumental update Reports will be sent home for all instrumental students at the end of the semester. If your son is not continuing with instrumental lessons in 2013 please inform Mrs Vivien London, administrative assistant (VLondon@cbc. sa.edu.au). Thank you to all parents who have been involved in the program for 2012.

Year 8 Advanced Music - upcoming performances The Year 8 advanced music class has been rehearsing carols since August and on Monday 26 November they will perform a selection for the CBC community as part of the Christmas Concert. The boys need to be ready for their performance by 6.45pm and school uniform is required. On Thursday 6 December the boys will perform a selection of rock repertoire in the Adelaide City Centre.

Attire on that day is casual but a hat is required as all the performances are held outdoors.

From the Counselling Team The following article, ‘Teenagers and Pornography’, written by Psychologist Kirrilie Smout (www. developingminds.net.au), provides some insights into the current literature findings on the effects of exposure to pornography and the possible associated effects.

This article follows on the heels of the Insight article from last week titled, ‘25 Ways to Protect Young People from Online Bullying’, (www.cybersafetysolutions.com. au). Today our young people are now only a ‘click’ away from accessing a whole range of pornographic or other inappropriate images online. Here, Kirrilie provides some helpful suggestions as to how to open discussions with our young people about the dangers of accessing this material and places a real emphasis on ‘keeping the conversations’ going. I encourage you to visit her website for further helpful articles associated with parenting and managing various issues and challenges that accompany this vital role.

Teenagers and Pornography I was having a conversation the other day with a parent with a 15 year old teenage boy. She said she had caught him looking at sexually explicit photos on the net. We discussed what her options were, and it prompted me to go back to the research literature and have another look at what scientists have discovered about teenagers accessing pornography online.

To be honest, I was surprised at what I found. I knew from previous reading that many teenagers look at sexually explicit material online – one study found 92% of teens by age 15 (more boys than girls) had either accidentally or deliberately accessed such material.

What I hadn’t realised was there has been a whole range of studies published since 2005 documenting dangers of looking at sexually explicit material online as a teenager. Here is a summary of what I read:

Possible Dangers of Teens Accessing Pornography One large scale study found that looking at pornography online does seem to increase a teenagers’ “preoccupation” with sex. In other words, the more a teenager looked at pornography, the more likely they were to become increasingly preoccupied with wanting to look at more. This is the cycle of addiction that some researchers talk about.

Some disturbing research found that the more teenagers looked at pornography, the more insecure they felt about their bodies and sexual abilities. This was true for both boys and girls. Another study found that the more often teenagers accessed sexually explicit material on the internet, the more likely they were to endorse conservative sexual roles – ie of male dominance and female submissiveness.

Other studies found a positive relationship between teenagers looking at pornography and the acceptability of premarital, extramarital and casual sex. The more they accessed sexually explicit material, the more acceptable they believed casual, premarital and extramarital sex was.

There was also contradictory research findings on whether internet pornography was related to risky sexual behaviour – some studies found the more teens looked at pornography, the more likely they were to engage in risky sexual practices (eg multiple partners, unsafe sex), whereas other studies didn’t find this link at all.

One relieving finding is that it seems as though looking at sexually explicit material as a teenager does not seem to lead to sexually aggressive or abusive behaviour.

It is important to note these studies are new and need replication. It is also important to note that most of the studies found that there was an increasing relationship between the amount teens accessed pornography and these attitudes and behaviours, which means there may be some “safe” level of viewing. It is possible that teens who occasionally view sexually explicit material experience no ill effects? At this point it is difficult to know. However, these studies do seem to indicate that frequent (and possibly even lower levels of) viewing may have harmful effects.

How to Have a Conversation with Teens about Internet Pornography Regardless of what we think about the research listed above, I think we need to have conversations with our teens about this issue. This can be tough to do, so I’ve listed some ideas which might help.

Bring up the topic in a neutral way Start by bringing up the subject at a time when the teen is relaxed. It can be useful to have this kind of conversation in the car, or while you are doing another activity, in order to keep the intensity and embarrassment low. You might like to start the conversation by referring to other teenagers or information you have read, rather than your own teenager. For example, you might say something like: “I was reading this article today which mentioned that 92% of teenagers look up pornography on the net. Do you think that accurate for say the teens at your school?

Does it ever get talked about or joked about?”

“Do you think looking at pornography might cause problems for some teens? Some people think it should be banned. What do you think?”

Remove the Shame It is important to tell the teenager that there is nothing wrong with them or bad about them for being interested in those kinds of pictures and video and to normalise their desires and interests. You may say something like: “I think it is completely normal to want to look at sexual pictures and videos on the net. It’s part of being a human to have that interest. I’m sure I would have wanted to look at those things when I was a teenager” “I know that some teens feel really ashamed of looking up porn on the net, and I feel sad for them. It’s not fun to feel ashamed of yourself” “I know this might be an embarrassing topic, but really I want you to know that I expect you to be curious and interested in this kind of material. I really don’t want you to feel ashamed of yourself for wanting to look at these things”

Discuss your concerns Once the topic has been raised, and shame removed, we need to go on to tell the teenager our concerns about looking at pornography. We might say: “While I think it is normal to want to look at videos and pictures of sexual material, I do have some worries about it, for example ...

“This article I was reading said some psychologists have found there are a few potential problems with looking at pornography, for example ...

When you are discussing your concerns, you might describe the following potential dangers: • It may create an unrealistic idea of what sex is like, what people look like naked, what people do while having sex, how they feel and so on.

• It can be addictive – sometimes people want to look at these kinds of pictures and videos more and more often once they have seen them.

• It can make some teens feel bad about their body, and worried about how “good” they might be at sex

If You Take a Stand Step Two: Ask them for their Ideas Tell the teenager that you need to monitor and find ways of making sure they don’t access pornographic pictures and videos, but that you would appreciate their ideas about how you can do this in a way that invades their privacy as little as possible. For example, you might say something like: “So I need to be able to check your web use, and put some controls on it, but I really don’t want to restrict you more than I have to. I don’t want to make it awful for you. I don’t want to stand over you every second. I have a few ideas about how we might be able to manage this, but I wanted to see whether you had any thoughts first.

How can I help you not look at these pictures or videos without stopping you from doing other things on the net, or from making life a huge hassle?”

Keep in mind they may not be interested in sharing any ideas about how you can do this! But it is still worth asking, as it invites a more collaborative approach.

• Some teens might feel ashamed of looking at pornography and get into a cycle of trying to stop and then feeling bad if they cant stop

If You Take a Stand Step Three: Monitoring and Restriction Options to Consider

Invite their ideas

You will then need to find ways to restrict access to sexually explicit material, and monitor their internet use.

Exactly which strategies are used will depend on each families’ technology and habits. I have listed some ideas that different families use.

Once you have expressed your concerns about teens viewing pornography, invite them to tell you what they think. You might ask: “What do you think about these things?”

“Do you think it might make people feel insecure about themselves?”

“Do you think it might get a bit addictive?”

Decide whether to take a stand or not At this point, parents will differ. Some parents will feel as though it is enough to discuss their concerns, and then allow the teenager to make their own decisions.

They might make the call that the risks are low enough to not take a hard line on this issue. They may feel that there are other issues which are more important for them to take a stand on. They are content for the teenager to simply be aware of the dangers and risks and make their own decisions about how much to look at, without taking further action themselves. This is a reasonable decision for some families, depending on the teenager, although if this is the course you take, it is important to realise that your teen will probably look at pornography and if you have decided to let this go, you can’t complain to them about it!

Some parents however, will feel as though the risks from viewing pornography for teens are high enough that they are going to take a definite stand about not allowing their teen to look at pornography and are prepared to consistently work at making sure it doesn’t happen. If you decide to take a stand, consider the following ideas about how to go about this.

If You Take a Stand - Step One: Explain the Rules and Why Tell the teenager that when they are adults, they will be free to make the decision to access this material if they choose, but for the reasons you have mentioned, you don’t want them to look at it until they are 18.

Also tell them that you don’t expect them to be able to use willpower alone to resist looking at pornography, and that you will help them by making it much harder for them to access it. If you suspect they are already regularly looking at porn, be realistic. Tell them you expect they will slip up occasionally and look at it, but you want to help them do it less and less often.

Idea: Install Apps which restrict and monitor web content used on ipads, itouch and iphones (eg Mobicap).

Idea: Install programs which restrict and monitor browsing on laptop and home computers (eg Net Nanny) Idea: Have monthly checks of teens’ laptop/ipad/ computer history (Tell them condition of having internet access is that history is enabled and not deleted.

Deleted history = we assume you have looked at pornography) Idea: Where possible, try to restrict long periods of uninterrupted time at home by themselves. I know this is not easy, especially for older teens who arrive home before parents. However, any way that can reduce that solo, uninterrupted time, (eg even by having to call Mum/Dad at a certain time, having part time jobs after school, or being able to have a friend over one afternoon a week etc) may be helpful.

Idea: Door open policy while computers/technology being used in bedrooms Idea: Internet off at the router at a certain time each night Idea: Smart phones and tablets in the kitchen overnight Idea: Tell teens that occasionally you will ask to see all the browser windows that are open at any one time Once you (ideally with the teenager’s input, although this is not always possible) have decided on your monitoring and restriction strategies, it is important that you tell your teenager that you are doing this kind of monitoring and restriction. It is best to be open about it, rather than trying to catch them out without them knowing.

Taking a Stand Step Four: Put some of these ideas in place over the short term and then review Once you have decided which of these options to try out, you then need to commit to carrying these out for a set period of time (eg a month or so) and then review. This is helpful because it is easier to get the energy to stick to doing it if we know it isn’t forever. Also, once we have been doing it for a month, we can see if the systems need to be tweaked. Being vigilant and committed to carrying these strategies out is probably the hardest part for parents. It is difficult, time consuming and effortful.

But if we do it half heartedly, the teenager will know it and just wait till our energy runs out – and in the long run, we teach them that we don’t really mean what we say.

Taking a Stand Step Five: Calmly and empathically enforce consequences when you discover pornography use Chances are, that your teen will try to access internet porn and if you are vigilantly monitoring, you will catch him/her doing so. When this happens, stay calm and empathic. Quietly enforce the consequences but do so in a sympathetic way. Think of how you might react if you are a police officer and caught your friend exceeding the speed limit by 30 kilometres an hour because they were going to be late for an important appointment. You would have to impose the ticket, but you would be kind and empathise with them. It is the same with teens, we need to be firm – but kind. For example, we might say something like: “Mate, I’m really sorry to say that I found porn sites on your history last night. Unfortunately I’m going to have to take your laptop away for the next two days. You can get it back on Wednesday. I know this is complete pain in the neck for you, with school and everything and I feel sorry for you but I know I have to do it for your sake.

Would you like me to put your school projects on a USB for you?”

Finally…

Whatever you think about teens looking at pornography, whether you decide to take a stand or decide to let the issue slide, can I encourage you to keep on having conversations with your teen about this. The earlier we can discuss these issues, the easier it is. Despite the fact our teens might well be extremely embarrassed by the conversation, I believe that over the long term, teens will appreciate that we care. (www.developingminds.net.au, 2012).

Year 12 Art and Design Congratulations to the Year 12 Art and Design students who after a difficult year of continuous work to produce a research assignment, two significant folios of developmental work for their ultimate final work that was the displayed on the ground floor of the Brother’s House. The works included an architectural design of an underwater restaurant complete with 3D walk through, a large personally relevant abstract sculpture, fashion creations made from recycled materials, an educational board game and a masterful self portrait in oils.

Assistant Principal - Junior Campus Dear Parents and Friends, On Wednesday our Year 6 students celebrated their year with a moving, heartfelt liturgy and Graduation Ceremony.

It was a ceremony full of reflection of the year that has almost concluded. Our outstanding Year 6 teachers have worked tirelessly to lead, coach, inspire, nurture, affirm and nourish the students in their charge.

Among our graduating class are many students of enormous diversity, who have made a difference during their time at CBC Junior Campus.

• They have been excellent student Representatives and Leaders.

• Others have been influenced by their exquisite literacy, dramatic and musical grace and eloquence.

• Some have had athletic accomplishments.

• Some have set the pace in class by the force of their intellect.

• And others have contributed to working for others on the margins.

All have encompassed our CBC values of Faith, Excellence, Community and Compassion.

My advice to all our Year 6 student leaders is very simple: “Do what you believe in. Paint a picture of the future. Go there – People will follow”. Be proud of yourself; your whole future is ahead of you; relish and seize every opportunity with both hands. I would like to sincerely commend Mrs Younie, Miss Williams and Mr Were for setting high bench marks in all things pertaining to the Year 6 classes of 2012.

The year is quickly coming to a close and that means that it is time to return all library books. Please note that all library books in the Junior Campus need to be returned by Monday the 25th of November (Week 8).

I would like to take the time to acknowledge our Year 6 Library Crew. This group of students have assisted our younger boys in returning, selecting and borrowing boys. They have assisted me with a variety of task including returning, re-shelving, stamping, barcoding and other library duties.

They have been enthusiastic in their approach and have competently completed the tasks. Their manner with the younger students has been beautiful. I have appreciated the time they have volunteered; it has certainly helped the Junior Campus Library function.

Junior Campus RE Coordinator Dear Families and Friends Last weekend, my family and I ventured with thousands of other South Australians to watch the Credit Union Pageant. While my girls were having a fix of chalk drawing waiting for the pageant to begin, I had some time to reflect on what is really important this Christmas.

The first and most important thing we can do to prepare our children for Advent is to prepare ourselves first.

After all, if we are impatient and crabby - pressured by all the busyness of this season - we won’t be very good at teaching our children anything about quiet, expectant waiting. If they never hear us talk about what we long for from the Lord, how will they learn about this kind of longing? And, if they hear “the coming of Jesus” talked about at church, and perhaps at school, but never hear us talk about the meaning of the coming of Jesus for us, what kind of message will we be giving them?

Of course, our children will be watching us and listening to us - what we say and do, and what we fail to say and do. So, the first thing we can give our children is our own commitment to enter Advent as deeply as we can. We want to clear our own spirits so that we can be present to theirs. The graces we receive can be the graces we share with them.

Talking with our Children To talk with our children about our own religious experience doesn’t mean we have to know all kinds of “theology” to “teach them,” nor does it mean we have to “dumb it down” to ridiculously simple terms. We don’t have to “burden” children with the burdens we have to bear in our adult relationship with God, and we don’t have to make their world more unsettling and scary than it already is. We just have to find the right time and place to talk with them about our faith.

We don’t have to criticise everything in our contemporary culture’s preparation for and celebration of Christmas. But, what we tell them about Advent will help temper the materialism and consumerism involved in the marketing of Christmas to children.

The Message We can tell our children about Isaiah, the prophet. We can tell them that God has wanted to be the one who would lead and take care of his people. But they rebelled against God, and demanded kings, just like all the peoples around them had. So, God let them have kings. As it turned out, there was one bad king after another. And God sent prophets to the people and the kings to remind them of the agreement - the “covenant” - God made with them: I’ll be your God and you be my people.

Now the way the people made someone a king was to pour a bit of oil on their head. The one who was “anointed” this way with oil became the king. Well, the prophets began to tell the people that God would send them “an anointed one” (the word they use to say “anointed one” in Hebrew is “Messiah.”) In fact, they said that this Messiah would be called “Emmanuel”, which in Hebrew means, “God is with us.”

So, the message of the prophets was about a promise that God would save his people from all that they were 10

suffering. The prophets use such wonderful images to tell the people that they could expect and hope for a day when “every tear would be wiped away.” It would be a day of great peace - “the lion would lie down with the lamb” and the people will beat their spears into hooks to prune trees with. And, the most unbelievable promise of all: “death will be no more.”

2012 Sacramental Journey Celebrates The Feast of Christ The King

We all know now that what God was preparing his people for was the coming of Jesus, the Christ (Christos in Greek means “the anointed one.”)

Thank you to those families who have responded to the invitation to attend this important celebration to mark 2012 as the year your son received the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Then, of course, we can tell them about Zachary and Elizabeth and about Joseph and Mary. We can tell them the story from Luke’s gospel first. What is so surprising about the story is that he comes, not like a king, but in great simplicity and poverty. Our God is truly with us, as a little baby. He knows what is like to be a child everything.

We can tell this story to our children in so many ways.

We can let them tell us what it means to them. Through all this conversation, the message will come through.

During these weeks of Advent, we want to look forward to celebrating his coming to live our life and to set us free - free from our sins and free from death itself.

We want to open up Advent for them, so that they can get ready for - look forward to - Christmas in a different way. We want to introduce them to faith-filled meanings for light/darkness, hunger/thirst, and all the other images of Isaiah. We want them to really know the meaning of “the Christmas story.”

Advent Activities It would be great to create a Nativity “place” in our home. Before we just put a nativity scene there, we can let it be an empty space for a while. We can prepare for setting it up, by putting things in that place which represent the longing, the desire, the emptiness.

Perhaps that place can begin with a basket. Children can place notes in the basket that express what they hope for, for each member in the family, for their friends, for people in the world. They can write special prayers for loved ones who are sick, for children in their school who are difficult. We can keep telling the children that it is into this special place of our longing and faith that Jesus comes. Then, when we set up the Nativity scene in that place, it can become a special place for the children.

We can involve children in preparing food for others. If there is a pre-Christmas party with friends or family, or even a “pot-luck” event we have to go to, we can involve the children in preparing something for the party. And, for Christmas dinner itself, we can tutor the children in making food for others to be happy and full and grateful.

We can show them recipes they can make, and let them “in” on the big plans for the whole thing.

We can make plans to visit someone who is homebound or in a nursing home at this time. We can prepare our children for how to go there, how to be there, how to be grateful for the experience.

We can take an Advent or Christmas song, and copy it for our family reading - perhaps a prayer to be read, over and over. We can talk about what the words mean.

With older children, we might find a time to prepare food for a meal program for the homeless or go there to help serve and meet the families there. We may even be able to get them to tell the younger children about the experience, and why it fits so well with preparing for Christmas.

And, as we make these special family traditions during Advent, we will come up with others, which fit our family well.

Kayak Regatta 3 On Sunday, 18 November, Christian Brothers College students Elliot Santarelli and Matthew Grimwade attended their third state regatta for the 2012/2013 season. Elliot and Matthew were both racing in the Under 16 age category in the K1 200m, 500m and 2000m and also in the K2 200m and 500m events.

After weeks of hard training and dedication these two competitors were hoping for some great results in terms of placing and personal best times.

On the morning of the regatta at the West Lakes course, the weather was a little cold, breezy and drizzly but fortunately it all cleared before the races began. As per usual first up were the 200m K1 events. Elliot Santarelli crossed over the line in 5th position whilst Matthew crossed the line 1st with a time of 43 seconds. Next up were the K2 200m, one of the fastest races in kayaking.

Elliot and his partner Max finished 2nd, just a couple seconds after Matthew and his partner Jay who came 1st. Straight up after the K2 200m the transition to the K1 500m began. Being one of the most competitive races on the day, Elliot again crossed over the line in 5th position only milliseconds behind 3rd and 4th position whilst Matthew powered through the end finishing 1st. The second to last event of the day was

the K2 500m. Elliot and his partner Max finished the race in 2nd position just after Matthew and his new partner Jason. The final race of the day was the K1 2000m, the longest and most painful race after what had already been a hard day of racing. Elliot Santarelli easily pushed his way into 2nd place, trailing Matthew in 1st across the line.

This was another regatta that gave a clear indication of how much training can help you improve in just one month. If the improvements continue into the New Year, the Australian Canoeing National Championships will be a great week of racing. Also coming up in a couple weeks is the first national regatta, GP1. CBC competitors are looking forward to some fierce and competitive racing, hopefully bringing home some medals.

BADMINTON Year 8/9 2 Badminton St Pauls defeated CBC The St Pauls team were far greater in numbers on the day and managed to defeat CBC in all but one match. CBC put up a good fight and heartily congratulated the winning team.

CRICKET First XI Cricket Pulteney 8/203 defeated CBC 6/120 With several senior players overseas or otherwise unavailable, this game was an opportunity for some of the up-and-coming stars in Year 8 to step up to the mark and have a crack at First XI Cricket. J Kittel-Neill opened the bowling and removed the opener with a delightful in-swinger in the first over; he bowled the other opener in his next over and things were looking promising. H Sakhi performed a great run-out from mid-off to the ‘keeper, and when R Nihill claimed a wicket with some spot on bowling they were 4 for 27 and we were in the driver’s seat. Catches win matches proved too true for us though as PGS dragged themselves up off the canvas to compile 203 in their 45 overs. We started our innings shakily with J Kittel-Neill gone in the 1st, C Skelton in the 2nd and N Byrnes in the 3rd. After J Strange was run-out we were 4/44 and looking at just trying to survive the 45 overs.

Year 8 A McPherson came in and put on a great 70 run partnership with L Yates for the 5th wicket to put some respectability on the scoreboard. We didn’t win, but took some positives out of the match with strong performances from the Year 8 brigade on the back of M Gabrielli and M Cotsios performing strongly in the Friday night game, and are looking forward to our last game of the year this week.

Year 8B Cricket Rostrevor 7/113 defeated CBC 5/89 On a glorious Saturday morning at the home of cricket in the western suburbs, Collins Reserve hosted the much anticipated clash between catholic school heavyweights, CBC and Rostrevor. The lads needed a little history lesson before play began to establish the significance of CBC over our ‘Border’ brothers Rostrevor. Unfortunately however, the historical superiority didn’t translate onto the cricket pitch, but not without some great cricket from the boys in purple!!

‘D-Train/outback patio’ Porcelli lost the toss and the visitors sent us into bat on a questionable green deck. We had some significant inclusions this week with Aiden and Danny ‘Apples’ Applin joining us from the 8As. Their batting prowess was typified through their fine techniques with both helping to build the foundation of our innings early on in the piece. Aiden finished with a hard fought 11 while Apples skilfully worked his way to 22. The middle part of our innings was most impressive, with both C Moore and ‘Mushy’ Isherwood running extremely hard in between the wickets and snaring a second and sometimes a third run when before they probably would have settled for a single. Isherwood finished with a finely constructed total of 7 retired, while Moore bested him with 8. Skipper Dom finished not out on 4 while J Sennett-Perez managed to get out of second gear and compile a very handy 8 no at the end of the innings. Special mention must go to M Severino whose lusty hitting brought the huge crowd of Mums and Dads to life as he swatted the bowl back past the bowlers head!!

Our bowling once again needed to be special as we only played with nine, but special mention must go to Apples for taking a well deserved 5/26, bowling tirelessly for six overs. His line and length was professional, and many a time the Rostrevor lads just couldn’t play him. Extras again treated us badly with Sennett-Perez’s bowling unlikely to hit the side of a barn. This contributed largely to the sundries tally, although he had a dropped catch which could have removed their most damaging state level batsman.

Unfortunately though, there was not enough support for Apples who almost carried the bowlers with only S Tsoukatis and J Gregorace snaring one wicket a piece. To our detriment we couldn’t put Rostrevor away, which in the end, came back to haunt us as they managed to cruise to victory through the slightly petulant work of their number nine batsmen.

The loss marked the end of the year for lads, but not without some encouraging signs for the year to come. In my six weeks as B grade coach, the lads have all made marvellous improvement and I can see special things to come from this group. Well done boys! Get on and around 2013!!

Year 7 Cricket Trinity College 7/98 defeated CBC 6/76 Our last match for 2012 – the much anticipated rematch with Trinity College. Trinity won the toss and elected to bat on a well prepared Collins Reserve deck. Miserly bowling

by CBC’s openers Lachlan Matthias 1/8 (3) and Siddarth Rajagopal 0/2 (3) got us off to a solid start. Wil Strange and Austin Lovell continued from where the openers left off taking 1/0 (2) and 2/6 (2) respectively. A poor umpiring decision by yours truly gave Trinity’s star batsman a second chance after he apparently thick edged one through to the wicketkeeper. He made us pay with a well compiled 27 not out. A trip to the audiologist has been scheduled for the Christmas break. Shan Jayawardhana 1/8 (3) and James Ridgwell 1/9 (2) both bowled well at the death, giving our

batsmen a chance at securing victory if we could put some partnerships together.

Our turn wielding the willow started slowly but steadily.

The two form batsmen of term 4 Harrison Webb and Shan Jayawardhana combined for a partnership of 22 against quality bowling. James Ridgwell and Lachlan Matthias then held the middle order together, both retiring to give all team members a bat. Year 6 debutant James Cerone was unlucky, adjudged LBW (not my decision this time) despite getting an edge on the ball. Wil Strange gave us a sniff of victory with some well timed shots late in the innings, but alas we ran out of overs.

There were many positives to come from our season.

Considerable improvement by many players will hold them in good stead for future contests. We do need to remember that cricket is a team game and only two batsmen can bat and one bowler can bowl at any one time, with those players needing encouragement from the pavilion and support from their fieldsmen. With some recruiting over the Christmas break of new year 8’s, a formidable squad will form with the ability to cause some upsets against the establishment. I’m in no doubt that many members of this year’s team will be playing First XI school cricket in the years to come.

Congratulations to all players for their good manners, etiquette and great sportsmanship. It was a very close match which was only decided in the last game played.

With only one match remaining it is wonderful to see how much the players have developed their skills.

Junior B Tennis St Ignatius 8 games defeated CBC 4 games Despite some excellent playing this week, being one player short and some very close games, St Ignatius were the victors this week.

Jack and Cooper in the 1st Doubles and Gogo and Luke Teakle in the 3rd Doubles won their games with great skill.

Gogo continued his winning streak after a very long battle in his Singles game, to finally win 7-6, while Luke Zounis also won his Singles game comfortably 6 games to 4.

Well done to all players, who continue to show great sportsmanship.

VOLLEYBALL Year 8/9 A Volleyball CBC v Sacred Heart (16 November) (Sacred Heart conceded to CBC due to lack of player numbers) Despite the fact that Sacred Heart did not have enough players, the boys enjoyed a 3 set ‘combo’ team. The game became CBC against CBC Heart! Showing excellent sportsmanship, the boys still enjoyed the competition of playing volleyball. The Sacred Heart players that combined

with 3 CBC boys proved to be tough competition and the CBC boys were relieved that they had avoided their fullstrength team!

I would like to personally thank the team for its commitment to matches and training. It has been a pleasure to coach the boys this year and I wish them every success in their cocurricular endeavours in 2013!

Immanuel 1 CBC 2 defeated Immanuel College 1 (9 November) The CBC Year 8/9 ‘A’ team travelled to Immanuel with anticipation. Impressed by the facilities and number of coaches there, the boys were a touch intimidated. However, the team quickly realised just how much their volleyball skills had improved and they comprehensively won the first set 25 to 13. Immanuel recovered to win the second set 25 to 23. To their credit, the boys did not let this deter them in their mission. The final set was won, again comprehensively, 15 to 6.

Year 8/9 B Volleyball Adelaide High School 2 defeated CBC 1 This last game of the year was also the most remarkable!

Although we were defeated, it was an very marginal defeat (18-25, 25-16, 23-25). Second week in a row we faced a very skilful and well organised team. The all girl team from Adelaide High looked very threatening in their pre-game practice and they proved to be an extremely strong opposition. The girls had a height advantage and their serves were very powerful, but our boys were not intimidated by that.

The second set in particular needs a mention. CBC led from the very beginning and this gave us a confidence boost. The boys engaged in some fascinating rallies, demonstrating great team work in passing the ball. The third set was equally enthralling, with CBC coming back from 10 points behind to lose by just 2 points. Well done to all the boys who played an excellent game; Brendan Tran, John Phan, Jackson Chau, Alex Hartley, Newton Quach, Davida Maka and Mark Vong who played half the game despite having an injury. And thank you to our sideline cheerleader Mushtaq Ahmad who provided lots of inspirational words to the boys.

Let’s hope this team stays together next year as they have made extraordinary progress since Term 1.

Water polo Water Polo St Ignatius 13 defeated CBC 2 Goal Scorers: Tyler McGinlay, Taylor Sarunic After a poor start to the match where our boys were all over the place we recovered to play a strong second half.

Taylor Sarunic played an outstanding game as goal keeper including one excellent save off using the bridge of his nose and eye socket. The recovery in the second half was excellent boys and gives us something to build on in our last game of the season this week.

The White Ribbon Campaign is the first male‐led campaign to end violence against women in the world. We encourage men to take a stand and say that violence, in any form, is never acceptable.

Origins In 1991, on the second anniversary of the massacre of 14 women by a lone gunman in Montreal, Canada, a handful of Canadian men initiated a White Ribbon campaign to urge men to speak out against violence against women. Wearing a white ribbon, particularly in the weeks leading up to the anniversary of the women’s deaths, represented men’s public pledge never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.

The White Ribbon Campaign has spread to countries on every continent, and commences each year on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Furthermore, even today, in many countries the majority of men are not physically violent. Violence is something that some men learn.

Men’s violence is a result of the way many men learn to express their masculinity in relationships with women, children, and other men.

4. Wear a white ribbon Change will occur if we each accept personal responsibility to make sure it happens. As men who care about the women in our lives, we can take responsibility to help ensure that women live free from fear and violence. Each year, men around the world are wearing a white ribbon up to and on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Wearing a white ribbon is your personal pledge never to commit violence against women.

5. Challenge sexist language and jokes that degrade women Sexist jokes and language help create a climate where forms of violence and abuse have too long been accepted. Words that degrade women reflect a society that has historically placed women in a second class position. One of the most difficult things for men is to learn to challenge other men.

6. Learn to identify and oppose sexual harassment and violence in your workplace, school, and family Sexual harassment refers to unwanted sexual advances or sexually‐ oriented remarks or behaviours that are unwelcome by another person. Flirting and joking are fine if they are both consensual and wanted.

Why wear a white ribbon?

Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge that the wearer does not excuse violence against women, and is committed to supporting community action to stop violence by men against women.

Men who wear a white ribbon demonstrate their opposition to violence against women and their commitment to equality between women and men. Men of all ages, from all workplaces, of all political affiliations and of all racial, ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds, sexual orientation and physical ability are needed to help establish community leadership to stop violence against women.

What can men do?

Ten Practical Things The following is a list of practical things men can do to help end violence against women.1

1. Listen to women… learn from women The path starts with listening. Who knows better about violence against women than women who experience it? Learn about violence by asking a woman who trusts you how violence has affected her life.

Then, if she feels comfortable to talk, sit back and listen.

2. Learn about the problem The basic rights that most men enjoy — safety in their homes, ability to go out at night, a job free of harassment — are a source of fear for women in much of the world. The fear is greatest in women’s own homes. A common myth is that most violence is committed by strangers. In fact, women are most at risk from men they know — husbands, boyfriends, fathers, relatives, employers, and caregivers.

3. Learn why some men are violent Men are not naturally violent. There have been societies with little or no violence. Studies over the past century have found that half of the tribal societies studied had little or no violence against women, against children, or among men.

7. Support local women’s programs Around the world, dedicated women have created support services for women who are survivors of men’s violence: safe houses for battered women, rape crisis centres, counselling services, and legal aid clinics. Women escaping violent situations depend on these services. These and other women’s organisations deserve men’s support and our financial backing. That’s why we encourage local White Ribbon Campaigns to raise money for local women’s programs.

8. Examine how your own behaviour might contribute to the problem If you’ve ever been physically violent against a woman, if you’ve committed sexual assault, if you’ve hit, pushed, threatened, kicked your spouse or girlfriend, then you have been part of the problem. If this happened long ago, admit what you did was wrong and make amends if possible. But if such behaviour has any chance of continuing, then you urgently need to get help getting to the root of your problem. Don’t wait until it happens again. Please act today.

9. Work towards long‐term solutions Ending violence against women won’t happen overnight. Real solutions are truly long‐term solutions. Changes in attitude, behaviour, and institutions take time. We must look at how we raise future generations. We must teach our children, by example, that all forms of violence are unacceptable; that for boys to become men, they do not need to control or dominate women, men, or children.

10. Get involved with the White Ribbon Campaign’s educational efforts The White Ribbon Campaign is the largest effort in the world of men working to end men’s violence against women. It is a grass‐roots effort, relying mainly on volunteers. It needs your support.

RE : Royal Commission

My Brothers and Sisters in the Adelaide Archdiocese

As you are aware, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced that a Royal Commission is to be held to inquire into institutional responses to child sexual abuse in Australia.

Also, on Wednesday the NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell announced a more focused inquiry dealing with specific issues raised in the media concerning the Diocese of Newcastle - Maitland.

This Royal Commission is a very important development in Australian society as a whole because it will be the first time when the horrendous issue of abuse will be examined in great detail on a national scale. It will enable people affected by child sex abuse to have a voice like they have never had before. They will be able to tell of their tragedies and be heard at the highest level – and in doing so it will help institutions, including our Church, to learn more about those experiences and, if necessary, better inform us about how we respond to these very difficult and complex issues.

Our Diocese will, of course, co-operate fully with the Royal Commission and the NSW Inquiry, and we will do so with absolute honesty and openness in an effort to do whatever we can to help shed light on the tragedy of child abuse. As people of God, we can only feel deep shame over the terrible betrayal of trust and the suffering inflicted on the abused and their families by those members of the Church who engaged in this most serious crime.

To all those who have been affected by clerical sex abuse, I again express my deepest sorrow.

As I have said before, the reality of child abuse is by far the greatest crisis we have faced as a Church in this country. When we first learnt of the scale of this issue, the Church moved nationally to develop the Towards Healing protocols which were introduced in 1996. Our priority in the past decade has been to respond compassionately to those affected by child sex abuse and to put preventative measures in place to ensure the safety of the children in our parishes and communities. I believe that the Archdiocese of Adelaide has been at the forefront of child protection in recent years, introducing many initiatives that have been held up as best practice. Having said that, I acknowledge again that we need to and must do more; we cannot be complacent and we cannot and must not underestimate the hurt and hostility that child sex abuse has caused.

I believe the Royal Commission will be a watershed for the Catholic Church in Australia and I therefore hope you will join with me in praying for those affected by child sex abuse and for our Church as we embark on this difficult but necessary journey.
