2012 Students with ATARs over 90.
From The Principal Dear Parents, Friends and Caregivers,
Dux Assembly My principal’s article this week focuses on the theme of educational excellence; a theme which has resonance in a number of events this week. On Tuesday CBC held our annual Dux assembly. In attendance were: • Carmen Alvaro - solicitor and 2003 College Captain • Arvi Simeon - 2012 College Dux and his mother • Numerous 2012 graduates • Representatives from Australian Red Cross. The assembly was a true celebration of achievement and excellence at CBC.
Arvi Simeon who received an ATAR score of 99.5 spoke to the student cohort about the importance of organisation and perseverance in achieving academic success.
I thank God for our CBC community members. I thank God for your determination, perseverance, dreaming, risk taking and personal belief that you can and must change the world.
Carmen Alvaro shared an inspirational talk on his postCBC life including his work as a lawyer in Adelaide and at the Australian Embassy in Italy.
Federal Election and the Education Agenda
In my principal’s address I reflected on the true meaning of excellence from the Christian perspective, which involves both knowledge and wisdom:
With the imminent Federal elections on 14 September this year, it was interesting to listen to the Prime Minister at her Address to the National Press Club in Canberra on 30 January 2013. In her address she pledges support for students with disabilities but stresses we live in a new low-revenue environment.
• Wisdom to make the make the world a better place • Wisdom to be men who respect the women in our lives • Wisdom to be men who give voice to the voiceless, the poor and the marginalised and • Wisdom to dream large and to know you can and must change the world. Excellence, then, isn’t solely defined by your Year 12 results, awards, qualifications or certificates received. Excellence is about discovering our God-given talents and using these gifts for the world. Each of us is called by God and there is no excuse for not responding passionately! The Mystic, Rumi, says it so well: “You were born with wings. Why prefer to crawl through life?” Our 2013 theme asks of us: “How will you let your light shine?”
Liberating Education
We open hearts and minds, through quality teaching and learning experiences, so that through critical reflection and engagement each person is hope-filled and free to build a better world for all.
Faith Excellence Community Compassion
Across all our schools, over more than a decade, we have been slipping behind the education standards of the region and the world. The Government will make sure every child gets a great education and every Australian can live with the greater peace of mind that comes with knowing that if they or someone in their family become profoundly disabled they will get a fair chance and a fair deal. I am determined that every child in this country gets the chance at life that can only come if he or she gets a world class education. I believe in this as a moral cause – a crusade – but I also believe that our future prosperity is inextricably linked to us winning the education race. I will fight to get this done.
