This week I thank God for those in our community who challenge us for they call me to a deeper respect and love. As Mr Jalleh writes in this edition of the Insight in his retreat report: “The difference between the stranger and a friend is merely a story.”

Introduction This Sunday’s Gospel reading is a narration from the apostle Luke of the prodigal son parable. The moral to the story is revealed in the story’s ending: Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.

As a father and a principal I have come to know the incredible joy and freedom there is in unconditional love which can’t occur without unconditional forgiveness.

The Gospel teaches me there is no such thing as an unlovable child, an unlovable parent or staff member.

Challenging, yes, but unlovable, no!

Counsellor’s Corner Problems but not Problem People Problems never exist on their own; there are usually human beings associated with them. We do have people with problems but not problem people. The vast majority of people cope well with their own problems but a few at times need help. In helping others, we should show them love and concern and help them to recognise their own coping strengths. We need to listen intently to what the other person is saying and not interrupt their telling of their concerns. Hopefully they will gradually come to realise more that they are unique and have strengths and that they can overcome their difficulties.

Clipsal Week This week I again mention my sincere thanks to Mr Scali and all who assisted with the hugely successful CBC Clipsal 500 fundraising event. I am indebted to the past and present parents, Board members, staff and friends of CBC who assisted throughout the 4-day event and the days preceding and following Clipsal.

The presence of parent volunteers who sons have long since graduated from the College and retired Board members speaks volumes of the deep sense of community that CBC encourages. Community is one of our four College values and events such as Clipsal illustrate just how authentic we are to this value.

I omitted to thank our Grounds and maintenance staff who worked tirelessly throughout Clipsal 500 and

Student accolades I am always proud to share with you stories and letters from the community praising our students. I received the following letter on Tuesday: I would like to commend one of your Year 7 students (he was wearing a CBC Year 6 2012 shirt) who was travelling on the 147 bus this afternoon.

After seeing the bus was full he leapt straight out of his seat when an elderly lady boarded the bus.

Not only was this unnecessary due to him not being in one of the designated seniors seats but he then proceeded to help her up the steps and into her seat.

Another accolade for our students occurred on Tuesday night with CBC winning the inaugural Fringe Depot Rock Bands competition. Congratulations to the following students: Jordon Lennon, Marcus Barricelli, Lan Nguyen, Josh Hogban. CBC’s victory was especially noteworthy as their competition came from the following schools with well-established Music programs: Rostrevor College, St Michael’s College, St Mary’s College and Immanuel College.

Tax File Number Eventually we will all need a tax file number. An employer and superfund will need it so you only pay the tax that is due, not the top marginal rate of 0.45 cents in the dollar. The Australian Tax Office has been authorising schools for verification purposes for some years. Forms are available from Mr Lucas, Head of Smith House, or your son’s tutor. The forms ask for some identification details and a copy of the relevant documents. If the form is completed as part of the school’s program, you only need to supply the document numbers, not an original of the document. Once the form is completed, please return it directly to Mr Lucas who will send forms to the Australian Tax Office in regular batches. Once the Australian Tax Office has received the form, your son should receive his tax file number within 21 days. If you have any queries, please contact Mr Lucas, through the CBC office.

From The Deputy Principal Is The Art of Handwriting Dying?

The days of a teacher standing in front of a blackboard with a piece of chalk in one hand and a duster in the other are long gone. Now teachers use PowerPoint and electronic devices in their teachings and students use laptops, iPads etc. The concern today is that as we use computers to educate young people are we casting aside handwriting? We used to use the term that “The pen is mightier than the sword” but can it compete today with laptops?

I am sure if you asked a teenager sitting at school to choose between a biro and a sought after computer device they would select the electronic device. Both are key tools in a child’s development but there are concerns that handwriting is deteriorating as we see a growth in a new wave of technology in schools.

In New South Wales they have been analysing the handwriting of over 70,000 students who sit HSC exams who have to complete some 15 to 20 hours that are almost entirely handwritten, with many exams three hours long. They found the handwriting of many students very chaotic, extremely messy and, in the worst cases, completely illegible. This analysis of handwriting skills has resulted in the NSW Board of Studies now considering whether to introduce computers to the HSC exams.

Some schools are now introducing handwriting lessons, as students as young as ten years of age are completing homework with computers. These lessons are designed to prevent the drop-off in the quality of handwriting.

This doesn’t mean students continue to use pen and paper but we can see students who are developing their handwriting with their finger on a touch screen as they would with a pencil.

Results showed that when the characters had been learned by typing, they were more frequently confused with their mirror images than when they had been written by hand. They also found children’s spelling is better when words are written when learning them, than when words are typed.

In recent years, modern technology has dramatically changed the way we communicate through writing.

However, despite the increased use of computers for writing, the skill of handwriting remains important in education, employment and in everyday life.

Handwriting skills are still an important part of our teaching and learning, whether this is forming characters of letters in junior primary or writing formal letters at a senior level. Students need to develop their ability to write legibly and attend to the higher-level aspects of writing composition and content. This is important when assessments are based on written work, particularly in time-limited written examinations, which remain as a major form of assessment for many formal qualifications. Without fast and legible handwriting, students may miss out on learning opportunities and under-achieve academically.

Beyond formal education, most employment situations will involve at least some handwriting and may require the communication of critical information (e.g. medical notes, prescriptions).

Thus, handwriting with pen and paper still has an important role from early childhood through to our adult lives, but more and more, people are shifting from paper to electronic modes of communication. Interestingly though, many personal computers now have handwriting recognition capability so that handwriting as a means of interacting with computers is becoming more pervasive.

As a College community we need to continue to develop the handwriting skills of our students as it is still an important form of communication in today’s society.

Historically this is an event for all the family where our multicultural community comes together to celebrate our diversity.

We are looking for enthusiastic people who like to cook and share their cultural food with the wider school community by becoming a stall holder.

Past stalls have included an Aussie BBQ, Brazilian, Chinese, Greek, Italian, Indo-Fijian, Irish, Latin American, Polish, Vietnamese and others.

Year 11 Retreat at Semaphore Thirty five students fronted to the Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club on a bright and warm day. The views of the open ocean were quite spectacular and the retreat venue was equally inviting, well-appointed and most importantly air-conditioned. The theme for our retreat was “On a Journey”. The staff who attended for the day included Toni Riccio, Matthew Crisanti, Nicole Leary, George Caretti and Gary Jalleh. They presented specific sessions in addition to facilitating small group work with the students.

We set the scene by exploring what a retreat actually meant, the need to show respect for another person’s viewpoint, expectations and the importance of being on time for each session. Each session could only start when the circle of chairs was filled. Students started by listening to a song by the group Black Eyed Peas entitled “Where is the love” and underlining sections of the lyrics which resonated with them.

This was then shared on a voluntary basis to the wider group. This reflection at the start was followed by students listening to an excerpt by Br Pinto, Congregational Leader of the Christian Brothers. He concludes with a powerful message:

to gather quietly and chat, played pool or went for a walk on the beach. Staff also took time out to assess the morning session and look at the next one.

The following sessions were more challenging as we explored issues at a more personal level. This session was the “Road of Life” where a deep reflection of where they have come from and where they are at currently was required. The challenge was to look at the significant people or events that had shaped them during this journey. A staff member facilitated and modelled this to the students before they went to their private space to illustrate their journey. This was followed by a sharing of their personal story in smaller groups to their mates with a staff member present at each group. Lunch followed and my favourite phrase of, “Every boy has a mother or father that loves them” was validated because some parents had prepared a feast for their sons! There is certainly a lot of love out there for the lads. The boys took time to go to the beach and paddle in the water, went for walks to stock up on food, invented amazing games with a tennis ball and just generally relaxing. So good to see. Mind you staff did the same... also good to see.

Students were given the opportunity to explore prayer, the pain of being human and what is important in their lives in the morning session.

They were directed in sessions with staff facilitating and at other times shared personal experiences in conjunction with staff. They had the opportunity to work in smaller groups as they looked at the importance of family, school, friends and career.

Each small group then reported back to the whole retreat group. Students also had personal reflection opportunities to explore the challenges they will face or are currently facing. Time passed quickly and they enjoyed a well-deserved recess break. Some chose 4

The afternoon session was equally challenging as we looked at “God in my Life” facilitated by a staff member. This challenged our perception of, and belief in, God and where that sits in our lives at the moment, and that our concepts may be generational.

A thought-provoking video entitled “Nameless Streets” looked at Simon Neeson’s journey of selfdiscovery and selflessness to set up the Cambodian Children’s Fund. He was a successful Hollywood director most noted for the film “Titanic”. This highlighted the Edmund Rice tradition and that a belief in God must be outreaching.

George Caretti, our manager for the day, organised clean-up in good time and the groups settled into the penultimate activity of the retreat. In their original group, affirmations were written about every other group member. The retreat concluded by members

of staff reciting sections of the reflection “Footprints” as a final blessing to the students. On leaving staff had a final treat for students – chocolate cake and a cool drink!

In reflection we could not fault these lads. Staff commented on the students’ responsibility, their ability to reflect as indicated by the depth of their responses in various sessions, camaraderie and respect for others.

I thank all staff for their input and sharing of themselves with the students. A very fulfilling day indeed.

Mr Gary Jalleh on behalf of the Year 11 Semaphore Retreat Team

Duke of Edinburgh Year 10 Mountain Bike Camp The Year 10 Duke of Ed Mountain Bike Camp was held from Wednesday 27 February until Friday 1 March near Cuddley Creek.

The boys who participated worked very hard over the three days and entered into the true Duke of Ed Spirit. The idea of these camps is to encourage students to work together and extend their efforts and abilities further than they have before. The group of 21 students and 4 staff worked tirelessly together and enjoyed the activities we participated in.

The first day was wet, cold and windy and in extremely difficult conditions the boys persevered to try and master the skills of riding mountain bikes. Michael from Duke of Ed and Ian from Escape Goat Mountain bikes put the group through their paces and gave us the skills and hints required to be successful for three days of solid riding.

The first day was wet and slippery and the group quickly learnt that it was more fun to stay on the bikes than hitting the dirt and rocks on the ground.

Over the three days there were many goals achieved and it was pleasing to see the boys increase their efforts with hill climbing on the mountain bikes. Kyle Fleetwood-Piper was excellent in his endeavour to complete all tasks and attempt all situations set for him ensuring he was always at the front of the pack. Luke Clifton’s effort was also outstanding and he was always just behind Kyle.

Brayden Canavan held the record for the most spectacular crashes but was always quick to jump back on the bike and keep going.

James Arganese demolished a bike on a very difficult down-hill run and literally left the bike in two pieces. There were numerous other courageous efforts by boys who jumped straight back on to the bikes after difficult falls.

It was a great job by all campers and the behaviour of the boys left the staff who attended very proud of their efforts. We are indebted to Michael from DOE who stayed with us for the entire camp.

Assistant Principal - Junior Campus Dear Parents/Caregivers and Friends, This year our Junior Campus teachers have been working very hard to implement and further develop our educational programs at the Junior Campus in accordance with our Strategic Plan.

Implementing the Australian Curriculum in Maths, Science, English and History Our priority across the school is to map where the General Capabilities and Cross-Curriculum priorities are already included, then to analyse this mapping for any overlap and gaps. This process will be driven by our Action/Research key person Mrs Melissa Clifton and will be completed by the end of the year. If you are interested in learning more about the Australian Curriculum, logon to the ACARA website.

Our other priorities are to continue to improve our Literacy and Numeracy Standards in all year levels.

Last year I implemented Literacy blocks from Monday to Friday Lessons 1-3, and in Maths and Numeracy blocks 4/5 Friday, so that our teachers can explicitly teach the students foundational skills that can be built upon.

Every child has been tested and screened in Spelling, Reading Comprehension and Maths assessment tests that determine ability levels of all students to maintain their progress. You will have an opportunity to discuss how your child has achieved at our end of term Parent/ Student/Teacher interviews on Thursday 11 April.

Appointment requests will be finalised in Week 8.

Once we are back to normality in our Junior Campus, we will be hosting our student leaders Missioning Liturgy, tba. All SRC, Prayer and Social Action Group Leaders will be acknowledged as our Junior Campus Leaders and receive their badges.

Already our SRC and JC Action Group Leaders have fully embraced their responsibility in welcoming guests at our recent Principal’s Tour. These fine young men serve our school proudly.

Finally my sincerest thanks must go to our JC staff for their patience, dedication, work ethic and care of your sons throughout the Clipsal move.

My gratitude also must go to Mrs Leanne Dowling, parent/volunteer who has been a constant presence on the Junior Campus especially during Clipsal. We are very much indebted to Leanne -- thank you so much.

Magic Mike

On Thursday, Year 1 White went to the Junior Campus to watch one of the Clipsal races. When we got there, we were given some ear plugs because the race was very noisy. We sat in the seats to watch the Porsche cars race, and they were really quick and super loud.

One car crashed and slowed down, but then it raced off again. We also saw it on the T.V. screen.

It was awesome and we were very happy that we got to watch the race.

Building bonds:

From the Counselling Team Tips on how to build bonds with boys Steve Biddulph, author of Raising Boys and Generation Next speaker, talks about the importance of giving boys different bonding experiences as they grow. He says that boys experience 3 main developmental stages as they go through life:

0-6 years old: bonding with mum and learning to love A recent study published in the journal Child Development found that boys who have a close and loving relationship with their mothers during these years are less likely to have disciplinary issues as teenagers.

1. Dads and sons can enjoy playing sports together or take up a shared hobby. During these times talk to your son about your own childhood experiences, the difficulties and successes. At this age they are eager to listen to what their fathers have to say and learn from them.

2. If work permits, it is best for dads to try not to spend extended periods of time away on business trips. Be at home and be available.

3. Single parents – try to include an uncle, best friend or coach into your son’s life. If they have an example of a ‘good man’ then they will learn the skills they need from them.

13 – 21 years old: bonding with a mentor helps him become part of the community Steve Biddulph explains that parents need to: “organise some good mentors in their son’s live or he will have to rely on an ill-equipped peer groups for his sense of self. The aim is for your son to learn skills, responsibility, and self-respect by joining more and more with the adult community”.

1. Make sure he knows he is loved, with cuddles, hugs, eye contact and setting firm limits. This will give him inner security and confidence for the rest of his life.

1. As boys become more independent they are less inclined to listen to their parents. However they are usually willing to take note of a trusted mentor, this could be an uncle, someone who teaches them a hobby or the boss at their weekend job. Put them in contact with mentors who are good role models, allow them to experience their freedom and have more contact with other men in their lives.

2. Talk to him and show him new things, this helps develop the brain and encourages socialisation which is important when he starts preschool or school.

3. Build in him a love of life, play games, share sports like swimming, kicking a ball around, explore nature and enjoy the world around him. This will build resilience skills that he will need as he begins to go into the world.

6 – 13 years old: bonding with dad through play and sharing experiences The study also observed that ‘At the other end of the scale children tended to have greater behavioural problems when their fathers were more remote and lost in their own thoughts, or when their fathers interacted less with them’, said lead author Christopher

2. In traditional societies this is the time when young men would pass through initiation ceremonies conducted by the elders of the community. Young boys would become young men and learn essential lessons about life during these ceremonies. For our young men today we need to re-create this ‘rites of passage’ using the community and network we have around us.

BADMINTON Open A Badminton CBC 10 Rubbers defeated Norwood-Morialta 2 Rubbers (23 Feb) Our boys easily defeated a depleted opposition with four of our team playing for the other team.

Games were played in good spirit by all involved and I congratulate our boys upon their efforts.

St Peters College 12 Rubbers defeated CBC 0 Rubbers (2 Mar) St Peter’s, armed with four State team members, were far too skilled for CBC. Hung and Brian opened their doubles with a winning game but were defeated in the two that followed.

Although not winning the rubbers, many of the games were closely contested as the boys overcame their initial lack of confidence.

I congratulate our 11 team members upon their efforts.

This week we play their “B” group and look forward to the challenge before us.

Open C Badminton CBC 8 defeated Unley High School 4 After a fixture change and a school week filled with many varied activities, I was very pleased to see the 6 boys who attended this Saturday’s game at UHS. Riley White and Marek Wojcik partnered in 2 doubles matches and won both, while Liam Peterson and Victor Ngo played an additional singles each to make up for the team being short two players. John Neindorf and Christian D’Addario played the other singles games, narrowly losing their doubles in a very close 3-setter. Well played everyone!

Year 8/9 Badminton Glenunga International High School defeated CBC Another round of very tough matches! Although our CBC team played to the best of their ability, Glenunga finished up the victors. Once again, the boys represented our school with dignity and sportsmanship.

BASKETBALL Year 7 Blue Basketball Cabra Black 40 defeated CBC 30 A mighty effort by all team members, who battled on to the end, eager to win. All team members supported and encouraged one another throughout the game. The best player for the game was Lewis D’Antonio. A thank you goes to Logan Griffin, who joined the team, as we were one player short.

Year 6 Black Basketball Cabra defeated CBC Congratulations to all of the Year 6 Black basketball team on a fantastic game against Cabra. The boys bonded together and supported one another as a team. In the second half they improved greatly as they focused on defending their players, creating space on the court and going up for rebounds. Some of the shots which were scored by our boys were amazing. Sadly, we had a loss; however, there were many positives to take away from the game.

CRICKET First XI Cricket Sacred Heart College 3/103 defeated CBC 8/101 (23 Feb) As lovely as it was to get back to my Alma Mater at Somerton, the focus was to play competitive cricket.

Winning the toss and batting saw us score slowly but steadily in the first 12 overs until we lost wickets 1, 2 and 3 for one run. Losing the top order like that does not a competitive total make, and without L Yates’s sensible 42 run stand at number 5 we would have been a debacle.

101 was never going to enough to defend, and so it was SHC scored the runs in the 30th for the loss of only 3 wickets.

Year 10 Cricket Pembroke 5/88 defeated CBC 56 The Year 10 team made a rare trip east of Hutt Street to play Pembroke on their main oval. As usual we bowled first, with Marcus Tully losing a second consecutive toss. School camps and The Clipsal 500 took their toll on selection, resulting in Year 9 student Daniel Aplin filling in and playing with his brother Patrick for the first time. Daniel bowled well to take 1/11 before going off to play school tennis. Alex Walker made an early breakthrough whilst James Gates and Jacob Vonthoff bowled tightly. Patrick Aplin turned the ball well whilst Luke Curtale skilfully bowled Pembroke’s best batsman with a deceptive leg spinner. With reasonably tight bowling and excellent wicket keeping from Jonah Byrnes we did well to restrict Pembroke to 88 runs.

In chasing the runs Jonah and Cieran Whittaker made a few runs before being dismissed lofting deliveries. Jovan Bojovic and Marcus Tully started to accelerate the run rate and give the team a chance of winning. Jovan gave his best batting display in making 19 runs before also being caught lofting an accurate delivery from the Pembroke bowler, Dilena.

With six overs remaining James Gates and Tully looked well set to chase the remaining 34 runs; however, Dilena’s bowling was extremely difficult for the boys to hit. Wickets fell quickly and in the 18th over we were dismissed for 56, despite a well compiled 19 from Tully.

Year 9A Cricket St Ignatius College 9/101 defeated CBC 4/97 With both teams containing their fair share of club and First XI reps the one day game versus St Ignatius was always going to be tight. “Iggies” elected to bat first on a belter of a wicket but disciplined bowling restricted the early run rate. Mitchell Kracman and Christian Baker bowled superbly limiting the score to just 23 from the first 11 overs but with only one wicket down. Our spinners then took up the battle as the batsmen searched for quick runs. Clemente with two wickets for twenty was well supported by Michael Cotsios and Ambrose Ronson but it was the tidy swing of Henry Dall that made headway into the batting. Henry took 5/18 from four overs to be the best bowler on the day.

In reply Ben Adams (30) put on 32 for the first wicket with Anthony Zaffino and we looked to have the game in hand but tight spin bowling and some genuine express pace from their opener tightened the game up. Michael Cotsios added 40 to get us within sight of victory but despite some gallant late hitting from Tom Vanhouse we fell just short.

CBC 3/173 23 overs defeated Blackfriars 6/129

Whilst we avoided a debacle last week, this week we could not. Batting first and being 3/3 after 5 overs set the scene for our worst batting performance in a long time. Besides our number 6 and 7, J Escleo and R Nihill, putting on a 25 run partnership, no one else made double figures. St Michael’s made the runs in the 17th and we had to bat on until the 30th over. They could have made us bowl out the full 45 but showed mercy. Boys are reminded they are required players until the close of play at approximately 6 p.m.

Best with Bat: Barker 68 ret., Rajagopal 37 ret., Strange 25no Best with Ball: Kalluvalappil 1/3, Strange 1/7, Barker 1/7 The 8A cricket side continued its unbeaten streak, to remain the only cricket side without a loss so far in term one. After a double booking, the match was moved to the very small Barton Tce East oval. Winning the toss and batting first, the two openers made a great start against some quality fast bowlers. Unfortunately Ridgewell couldn’t continue his good early batting and was run out unluckily for 9. Chapman also

failed to capitalize on his solid start batting at three, caught for 2 runs. Strange and Rajagopal went about steadying the ship and put on an invaluable partnership before Rajagopal retired for a classy 37.

Pushed up the order and given the licence to swing freely, Barker decimated the Blackfriars bowlers and smashed the ball to all parts of the oval. Scorers, spectators and fielders ducked for cover as Barker blasted his way to a very quick 68 retired, ably assisted by some quality batting from Strange. A quick 7 from Salamon lifted the score to 173, a very competitive total.

Jayawardhana and Zito who opened the bowling were very unlucky not to get more early wickets, but restricted the run rate with some tight bowling. The fielding was also exceptional and eventually the flood gates opened, with Blackfriars losing 5/50 in the middle overs. In his first game for the college, Kalluvalappil bowled brilliantly. His first wicket for CBC will be something he will never forget, immediately surrounded by ecstatic teammates keen to share in the moment. A good partnership after their collapse saw Blackfriars reach a respectable score but the large total eventually proved too big, with CBC winning by 44 runs.

This week’s long weekend will be a great opportunity for the team to recharge after a brilliant start to the season. Many players (Riley Egan- broken toe, Harrison Webb- bruised collarbone, Ridgewell- slight concussion) are feeling the pinch from the solid workload and will look forward to the rest.

Year 7 Cricket Pembroke 6/85 defeatd CBC 5/63 We were sent into bat by Pembroke, though in fairness this would have been our decision if we had won the toss. We got off to a solid start with Jack Bastian once again holding the top order together and seeing off the opening bowlers to retire on 12. After this runs became hard to come by due to a combination of a long, lush outfield, long boundaries and tricky medium pace bowling which was hard to get away.

We also didn’t help our cause with some hesitation between the wickets, letting easy singles go begging. Wickets also fell at regular intervals, with no other batsmen reaching double figures. With some wickets in hand we needed to lift the run rate in the last couple of overs, which we were unable to do.

With only a small total on the board it was important that we bowled and fielded well, especially as we were a fieldsman short. We bowled well, but without luck, with the ball missing the off stump by just a coat of varnish on several occasions. Wickets were shared amongst five bowlers with Frederick Oliver 1/6 (3) and Austin Lovell 1/7 (3) the pick of the bowlers. Wickets were also taken by Jack Bastian, John Kleeman and Michael Kittel-Neill. Wicketkeeper William Mariuz took a spectacular diving catch running back with the flight of the ball which reminded many spectators of Matthew Wade’s catch on Boxing Day last year. Despite this wicket keeping brilliance we were a little flat in the field, with fieldsmen distracted by the roulettes flying overhead at the nearby Clipsal 500. With some players with arms folded, hands on hips or in pockets and rocking back on their heels and looking skyward, Pembroke were able to steal some quick singles to keep the scoreboard ticking over and take the pressure off their batsmen by rotating the strike. We will need to work on maintaining our concentration for the full 27 overs in the field.

Thanks to Charles Oliver who kindly assisted in scoring for the team. With a week off for the long weekend to regroup, we hold a 3-1 record from our matches at the half way point of the Term.

Year 3 Kanga Cricket St Ignatius College Blue defeated CBC We had a great game on Saturday but despite the marked improvement demonstrated by the boys’ skills so far this term, we were defeated by St Ignatius’ College Blue. All the boys had a great time and there were some good highlights. I would like to commend Lucas for his excellent sportsmanship and team skills. Well done, boys.

SWIMMING SAPSASA Swimming 28 February 2013 - Norwood Swim Centre It was a mere case of quality over quantity as our 5-man swimming team took to the pool on Thursday of Week 5. Kaine Baldwin (Yr 5) and Isaac Gianetta (Y6) along with three Year 7s were selected by the school and now had their chance to compete for a spot at the State Swimming Carnival. The boys can be commended on their efforts throughout the morning, all competing in a variety of strokes. Up against schools such as St Peter’s and Blackfriars we were able to notch up a staggering 21 points, being awarded an admirable fourth place. A special thankyou to all parents involved who provided crucial support including Darren Chatfield, Donna Gianetta and Helen Baldwin. It was a true team effort by all, and to see the boys act so professionally and respectfully in public was a proud moment for all involved.

Secondary Schools Swimming Carnival Congratulations to our boys who competed in the Secondary Schools Swimming Carnival at the Marion Aquatic Centre. We finished fourth with 607 points which was an improvement on last year and we were only 12 points behind the second placed school. Pembroke won the evening with 710 points.

We had many excellent performances from our CBC students and the team spirit and enthusiasm was excellent.

It is an absolute pleasure to be involved with the swimming team because our students always represent the school with class and passion.

Taylor Sarunic won all three of his individual events and was also a member of the winning Under 14 Freestyle relay team. That relay was the stand-out performance of the night with all four swimmers from CBC being evenly matched and they increased their lead with each leg to blitz the field.

Other boys to win races were Laurence Giannetta, Cooper Lienert, Bennett Reisinger and Tyler McGinley. Overall we had 8 first places, 6 seconds and 6 thirds and many more gutsy swims that displayed the skills and endeavour of the CBC boys. Congratulations to everyone who was involved.

It is great also to see students like Alex Hamam and Bennett Reisinger who have moved onto other sports but still compete for the school and show they have lost none of their skills.

Tennis Senior C Tennis Immanuel College (B1) 9 sets, 56 games defeated CBC 3 sets, 40 games After a promising start in the doubles, Immanuel came home strongly to take 7 of the 8 singles, dashing any early hopes of avenging our loss to them three weeks ago.

Newcomers, Kyle Gaweda and Jack Hamblin, combined brilliantly in the doubles, powering to a 6-0 victory. Raisy Lopez and Mark Haydon-Potts also made light work of their match, winning 6-1. In the singles, Gaweda, playing at No.1, emphatically defeated his opponent 6-0 with an awesome display of tennis. After a frustrating start, Jack Hamblin staged a remarkable comeback from 5-0 down, winning the next three games before finally succumbing 3-6. Luke Zunis seemed almost certain to win his match after running away to a 5-2 lead. However, he unfortunately squandered several match points, allowing his opponent back into the game and forcing a tiebreak in which he courageously went down 6-7 (TB 7-9). Overall, the team fought valiantly against a stronger team and to their credit demonstrated great sportsmanship on and off the court.

Middle B Tennis Nazareth 6 sets, 53 games defeated CBC 6 sets, 47 games I am very proud each week to be a part of the CBC Middle B Team. The boys have excelled themselves again with their tenacity, sportsmanship, and team focus.

This was a very close fought match with the honours finally going Nazareth’s way by just 6 games. With only 6 of 8 scheduled players in attendance, we had to forfeit a doubles match, but Stuart O’Neil and George Moutzouris both showed excellent sportsmanship by offering to play another singles match each.

The Doubles results were: Daniel Aplin and Brandon Shunmugam Doubles 1 (6-1), George Moutzouris and Stuart O’Neil Doubles 2 (3-6) and Doubles 3 Lachlan Jarvis and Harry Isherwood (6-2) Doubles 4 Forfeited...

One of the coaches of the opposing team commented to me about Stuart and George’s sporting accommodation for a Nazareth player who had never played competitive tennis before and how they assisted him with all aspects of the game.

In the singles matches we were very competitive with 4 sets apiece; with Daniel (6-0), Brandon (7-6 [7-5 tiebreak]), Lachlan Jarvis 7-6[7-3 tie break]) and Harry Isherwood (6-2). Stuart and George both played two singles matches each unfortunately losing with great sporting spirit Stuart (0-6 and 1-6) and George (1-6 and 4-6) respectively.

There is a bye this weekend 9.3.13. Next match is on 16 March.

Junior C1 Tennis CBC 8 games defeated Blackfriars 4 games We awaited the arrival of our opponents for some time before starting our matches, and our boys very quickly demonstrated their skills on the court. Anthony and Daniel won their rather challenging doubles 6 games to 4, while Julian and Thomas, Thanh and Christian won theirs convincingly 6 games to 0.

In the singles games Daniel and Bryce just missed winning by 1 game, with Julian, Thomas, Christian and Thanh winning convincingly 6 games to 0.

Prep B1 Tennis CBC 33 defeated Blackfriars 24 Despite living in our temporary home at the Dom Polski Centre and with one team member playing with an injury, we defeated our opposition with a very high level of tennis.

All players are showing great development in their skills and sportsmanship. Congratulations Adam Wells, Daniel Bressan, Daniel Herimas, William Moten, Jayden Mead and Indy Browning for your persistence and positive approach to the game.

VOLLEYBALL Year 8/9 Volleyball Marryatville 2 defeated CBC 1 On a warm Friday late afternoon we travelled to Marryatville for a 4:15 p.m. game. Due to injury we had lost a couple of our key players so the boys recruited some extras.

Considering they had not played as a team before they are to be commended on their playing and teamwork.

Initially, in the first set we were a bit lack-lustre but picked ourselves up to win the second set. Unfortunately, Marryatville won the decider but it was a close margin in the end. A good game and looking forward to the next match where we will hopefully be at full-strength once again.

Water polo Year 8 Water Polo St Ignatius College 8 defeated CBC 7 Goal Scorers: Laurence Giannetta 2, Henry Barker 2, Riley Poole 1, Isaac Giannetta 1, Mitchell Starr 1.

In the closest game of the season the boys again performed well going down by just 1 goal. The lead changed many times in the second half and we were beaten by a shot right on the siren. Our more experienced players had been moved to the Senior team and it was excellent to see the other boys stand up and perform well. Laurence Giannetta played his best game for CBC and was the lynch pin of our team. It is very pleasing the way the boys use all players when attacking and display effective team work.

We again had a player debut with Jasper Poole holding firm in the defence and he definitely learnt what playing water polo is all about. Mitchell Starr scored his first goal and Henry Barker and Riley Poole displayed their adaptability performing well in both attack and defence. A super team effort, boys.

6th March 2013 Dear Parents/Caregivers Has your son received the Catholic Sacraments of Initiation?

As you may be aware over the past few years there have been some changes to the Catholic Sacramental Program for Children. In the majority of cases, students are no longer prepared by the school, but instead return to their local parish to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist. Students are normally in Year 4 when this occurs.

This model has been adopted in the Archdiocese of Adelaide as it captures the community model of sacramentality and the ancient practice that as a parish community we both welcome and support members of our Church. However, we are mindful of the fact that for various reasons some children are missed through this model and do not receive all the Catholic Sacraments of Initiation.

In recognition of this reality, CBC in conjunction with the Adelaide Cathedral Parish, will be offering a sacramental program to any student, above the age of 9 years, who has not received any of the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation or Eucharist.

If you would like your child to participate in the Sacramental Program please fill in the attached form and return it to your son’s House Tutor by Wednesday, 13th March 2013. Students will receive the Sacraments later in the year at ceremonies held at the Adelaide Catholic Cathedral, Wakefield Street.

In some cases, if appropriate and after discussion, reception of the sacraments may take place in another parish if you have specific links to that parish.

To start, there will be a liturgical welcome for all new members of the program in the Cathedral. You can choose either 6:00 pm on Saturday, March 17th, or Sunday March 17th at either 9:00 am or 6:00 pm.

Classes will begin later in Term1 for students and afterschool parent meetings will occur in Term 2.
