International Night Congratulations to Margaret Salagaras and the P & F Committee for hugely successful ‘sold out’ International Night held last week in the College Gym. CBC is proud of our Internationalism with students originating from over 40 countries across the globe. Safety in the City

I received an email from a concerned parent regarding homeless people on Wakefield Street outside of the Police Station. The email raised a number of issues and concerns including:

• CBC Staff; Felicity Davies, Jie Zhu, Hilary Flynn, Sister Kanistal, Sister Joan, Sister Sheila Margaret, Alex Ly, Ann Lemos, Shaun Clarke, Frances Zubreckyj, Graham Brink, David Beinke, Dion Borillo and Michael Williams.

• The importance of respecting the dignity of homeless people- through being courteous and respectful of their feelings, needs and right to a presence in the city

• Richard McLoughlin, Ann Lemos and Sr Kanistal in particular worked a 12 hour shift!

• Students who served coffee, cooked the BBQ and performed on the evening.

• The importance of advising parents, friends, a member of CBC staff or police officers if students feel upset, threatened or intimidated by any member of the public to/from school • The need not to congregate after school in the city but to move straight home

• Stranger danger and safety issues such as not walking alone at night apply to all of us and not just in the city.

Connecting Spirits

Counsellor’s Corner Children of Alcoholics Recent medical literature reinforces the truth that alcohol abuse occurs in about 10% of the population.

One of the main problems for children of alcoholic parents is shame and self-loathing. It is as if they need a lifetime to repair their self-image. Guilt is the main issue that adult children of alcoholics have to face. Somehow they feel responsible for any misery in their own lives.

It makes no sense that they should feel guilty or blame themselves but it seems to happen in so many cases.

Alcoholic parents have a grave responsibility to their children in this regard.

The College is currently investigating being involved in a project called “Connecting the Spirit”. The program is where students study a World War I veteran as part of their Research Project/Studies of Society/Integrated Learning, etc and visit the Western Front. The visit to the Front has been a transformative experience which is reflected in their research work which has resulted in outstanding SACE results.

Heads of Junior School Conference Heads of EREA Junior Campuses from across Australia gathered at CBC on Thursday and Friday for a two day conference. They were joined by the National Directors of EREA. Mrs Frances Zubreckyj hosted and prepared the Conference together with Junior Campus Heads from Rostrevor and St Paul’s Colleges.

Among the Conference presenters were CBC staff: • Mr and Mrs Shaun and Caroline Clarke and I presented a workshop on the National Quality Improvement Framework which is part of the Federal Government’s Better School Initiative.

• Mrs Wilson (CBC Junior Campus Library) and Melissa Clifton (CBC Action Research Team) presented on Inquiry based teaching methodology at CBC. The conference will be a great opportunity to showcase the new Junior Campus and also to share some of the innovative 21st century teaching, planning and learning initiatives undertaken at CBC.

CBC News In Brief • This week we welcome Mr Ryan Mifsud (no relation!). Ryan will join the 2 Purple class replacing Mr Eddy Sheens one day a week.

• St Mary’s College Principal, Mrs Eileen Young and Deputy Principal - Curriculum, Mr Corey Travella, visited CBC this week to view the new Trade Training Centre. Project Coordinator Mr Brian Jacobi and CBC Head of Business and Enterprise Mr Emmanuel Gaitaineris provided valuable input regarding the Centre’s facilities and possible course offerings for 2014 and beyond.

Students can be reminded that companies advertising products take advantage of our desires; they do not describe the benefits of their competitors’ products. It is a social reality that people encourage one another to make important decisions with limited facts.

From The Deputy Principal Deciphering Correct Information In This Changing World The ability to think critically is one skill separating innovators from followers. We live in a world that is information rich where our students are being continually bombarded with information from all areas of social media. Developing critical thinking is important for our students as it reduces the power of advertisers, the unscrupulous and the pretentious, and can neutralise the sway of an unsupported argument. This is a skill most students enjoy learning because they see immediately that it gives them more control.

Our students live in a world where information is continually available through mobile phones, internet, television and other devices. Targeted advertising affects their buying and eating habits; choosing friends, the type of car they drive and influence the type of person they have a relationship. The decisions which we make can affect our own personal life. An inability to think critically at an early age can have devastating consequences in the long term.

It is essential that we teach students how to gather information, evaluate it, screen out distractions and think for themselves. Because critical thinking is so important, critical thinking needs to be incorporated in all subject areas. Because of the large amount of information students receive they need to be able to discern what is relevant and what is irrelevant. This seeing beyond superficial appearances is especially important today because we are surrounded by illusions, many of them deliberately created. The effects may be subtle, or they may affect us profoundly. While we seek out and appreciate some illusions such as films and novels, other illusions can be deceptive and don’t tell us the truth. Students are constantly being presented with information not only in the classroom, but also from their friends, parents, the Internet, films, television, radio, newspapers and magazines, and they need tools to analyse all the input.

Our students need to critically analyse information and recognise how false ideas can creep into our belief system. They need to be aware of the following statements: • People believe stories because they are the ones available. We need to be aware because a story is available does not mean it is accurate or important.

• Beliefs may justify past actions. We need to not be misled by impressions that were held previously.

• People may not recognise the significance of their own perceptions. We need to continually look at other sources of evidence.

Students don’t need much convincing that two of the biggest enemies of the truth are people whose job it is to sell us incomplete versions of the available facts, and the simple absence of accurate information. They may need more convincing that a significant problem is their own willingness to believe what they want to believe.

Teens Improve Mental Health if they Regularly Eat with their Family

Change of Semester and Arrangements For Year 11 Students

New research published in the Journal of Adolescent Health claims that the mental health of teenagers can be greatly improved when they regularly share meals with their family.

Information regarding the Semester 1 Examinations was distributed electronically to all Stage 1 students (Year 11 students and Year 10 HAP Mathematics students) in week 4 of this term. Copies of the examination timetable and information for students can be found on the portal and the College website.

The US researchers studied more than 20,000 young people between the ages of 11 and 15 years.

Perhaps even more surprising is the claim this applies regardless of whether they are comfortable talking to their parents. The benefits of family meals for teens include: • Providing them with routine • Consistency • Opportunity to learn communication skills • Manners • Nutrition • Good eating habits.

The research suggests that teens who have family meals are more trusting and generally more emotionally stable than those who do not have the same opportunity.

Another study reveals the benefits for the rest of the family when teens are part of regular family meals.

According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA), these benefits include: • Everyone eats healthier meals.

Parents of Year 11 students should take note of the following requirements during the examination week – • Year 11 students are only required to be at school when they have an examination scheduled – no formal classes will be held for Year 11 students in Week 7.

• Students must be wearing their correct school uniform for all examinations.

The examination week marks the end of the first semester for Year 11 students and provides students with the opportunity to consider their options for the remainder of this year. Already a number of students have made changes to their subject allocation for Semester 2, based upon their experiences in Semester 1, and changing interests and potential career directions.

Year 11 students are not required to attend school on Monday 17th June (Week 8) as this day has been set aside for Year 11 teachers to complete their marking of Semester 1 Examinations and to prepare for the changeover to Semester 2 for Year 11 subjects.

Year 11 students will be participating in Christian Service Learning (CSL) on Tuesday 18th June to Thursday 20th June.

Year 11 students are expected to be at school on Friday 21st June in order to receive their new timetable and begin their Semester 2 subjects.

• Students should arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the start time for the examination.

• Students will need to bring their own appropriate dictionary to the examinations and note that dictionaries with additional content such as a thesaurus, geographical maps etc. are not permitted.

If a student does not attend an examination, the College should be informed at the earliest possible time with the reason for the non-attendance. Students who do not provide a legitimate reason for their non-attendance at an examination will receive a result of zero for this

• Teens are less likely to become overweight or obese.

• Teens are more likely to stay away from cigarettes.

• They are less likely to drink alcohol.

• They are less likely to try marijuana.

• They are less likely to use illicit drugs.

• They (and their friends) are less likely to abuse prescription drugs.

• School grades will be better.

• Parents and teens will talk more.

• Parents are more likely to hear about a serious problem.

• Teens are more likely to feel family members are proud of them.

• There will be less stress and tension at home.

Researchers concluded that each extra family meal per week added significantly to the mental health of teenagers.

What Is Harassment?

Harassment can take many forms. Some harassment is unlawful. All harassment is undesirable.

Bullying

Assistant Principal Wellbeing Dear Parents and Caregivers Recently our College community has been impacted upon by events in the media regarding inappropriate racial comments and harassment. As our students grow into men who will make a difference they look for guidance from adults to help form their believe structures and to model appropriate values and attitudes. Unfortunately some of our students have been engaged in exchanging inappropriate and derogatory comments. Our College community represents the complexity of the larger community and we value and celebrate the diversity of cultural backgrounds and the stories and heritage that students and their families bring to our College life.

While our College policies are based upon a proactive educational and restorative justice model we have a zero tolerance for any form of harassment. In recent student gatherings I have worked with our students and informed them that IT IS NOT OK to say things verbally or via technologies that negatively impact on self-dignity and the dignity of others. Reference to anyone based on faith, culture, sexual orientation race or gender is unacceptable. Students are asked to ask the perpetrator to stop and if the harassment continues seek the support of a responsible adult.

Students who make inappropriate choices must also recognise and accept the consequences of such choices. The Pastoral Care program will also be exploring issues pertaining to bullying and harassment.

I encourage you to discuss the importance of maintaining human dignity with your sons so we can work together and support each boy’s journey to manhood. Further, please ensure that you son understands the College policy which states: Our Christian Brothers Community is committed to Jesus’ challenge that we love one another and to provide a safe school environment.

Physical Bullying: e.g. Hitting, Pushing, Gangs, Threatening, Damaging work or belongings, Cyberbullying, Text-massaging, Sexting, Emails, Online Social websites.

Our EREA Executive Dr Wayne Tinsey addressed the Forum inspiring all with his message of what it means to be part of this wonderful EREA Organisation.

Assistant Principal - Junior Campus Dear Parents/Caregivers and Friends It’s hard to believe we are halfway through this term already.

Last Friday I accompanied Miss Cronin’s Year 5 class to Rostrevor College to spend the day with their buddies.

Friendships have been established throughout Term 1 and 2 by writing letters back and forth. Initially the CBC and Rostrevor boys felt really awkward, finally meeting in person, but after doing trust building games and activities it was fantastic to see the boys arms around each other’s shoulders and chatting like they had known each other forever. We had hoped to climb Morialta Falls but due to the down pour last Friday it was not possible.

Rostrevor’s hospitality was awesome. Not only did they come to pick / drop us off in their own school bus, their Year 12 Leaders cooked us a BBQ lunch and treated us like royalty. Teachers were released for the day to help organise activities. Next term we hope to reciprocate this hospitality and we will invite the Rostrevor boys to spend the day with us at CBC. I take my hat off to Miss Cronin for initiating this building of friendships between our two schools. We hope this will be the start of things to come.

On Thursday / Friday this week we hosted the EREA Heads of Junior Schools Forum -- Leaders from all over Australia were our guests. It was such a treat to see our Junior Campus Leaders; Thomas Grech, William Reardon, Samuel Tabotta, Monydeng Monydeng, as well as JC Vice Captain Patrick Squire, together with leaders from Rostrevor and St Paul’s greeting the Heads at the front of our school.

Presently we have three 3rd Year student teachers from UniSA and Flinders University currently placed in various classes.

Finally thank you to everyone who attended the International Night. It was fantastic to see so many families there and was a total sell out.

The Commonwealth bank are asking you to nominate teachers / leaders that are outstanding in their vocation.

BASKETBALL Open A Basketball CBC 62 defeated Trinity 52 (Overtime) This was a huge game for the team in the context of the Knockout competition. We had to do it the hard way forcing the game into overtime by virtue of the fact that it was a Knockout game. The rules stipulate that only one team in each group can progress to the finals in early August.

CBC defeated all teams in our group and therefore have won the right to progress to the final knockout playoff.

Congratulations to the team. It was a must win game and the win was a TEAM WIN. Every single point that players contributed counts and is appreciated by everyone. In my mind players on the court were representing players who sacrificed their own court time for the team. I was really heartened to see that the players on the bench getting so involved with the game offering constructive advice and encouraging the on-court players.

The coaching staff congratulates the Trinity College team for their sportsmanship, tenacity and we wish them well for the rest of the season.

I personally feel that this game was a defining moment for the team in terms of what we can achieve while recognising that we still have equally talented oppositions to contest in the season. In my 20 odd years of coaching there has only been only one Open A CBC team that went through undefeated in the season. Can this Open A team 2013 emulate that? That is the challenge to the team. We shall see. I believe they have the potential to do so. So far, this team has won four consecutive games. Certainly this group has set the standard for the new Open team to follow next year. The boys played with sustained intensity for four quarters and getting us over the line in overtime.

The decision was made to go with a tall lineup sacrificing speed up the court to enhance our defensive posture and offensive power against Trinity and it paid dividends. The statistics and comments provided by Ms Gleeson point to an outstanding rate by the team. She commented that in 15 years of doing statistics for teams, she has not seen offensive rebounds (22) overtake our defensive rebounds (17) rate. It is normally the other way around. Another highlight was the fact that we had 16 assists.

The first quarter was an even affair with CBC having a one point deficit with both sides accumulating full five team fouls. The score line was 11 -10. However it was ominous

Cross Country On Thursday the 30th of May 14 boys from the Junior Campus had an opportunity to represent their school at SAPSASA Cross Country State Day held at Oakbank Race Course. For most it was a new experience to race amongst 300+ competitors from all across the state, however this did not deter the boys from competing with great spirit and giving their all. The day was a great success, with a number of fantastic results including Akok Machar and Isaac Giannetta placing in the top 20 of 300 and invited to trial for the state team to compete at Nationals in Tasmania – a fantastic achievement. Keep up the great work boys.

The second quarter saw Trinity come back at us to secure a five point buffer at the major break with Trinity at 23-18.

At this point the game could blow out to a point beyond redemption which it nearly did in the third as the CBC team lost ground to sustained pressure by Trinity to trail by ten points.

This ten point margin by Trinity is a massive lead given the calibre of the teams and the level of the competition and division. CBC fought back to get a stop to this flow but was hampered by turnovers and still afflicted by the nightmare scenario of shots going up but not converting. Nevertheless, we stuck to the tall lineup and managed to counter and finish the third in our favour with a two point advantage but still trailing Trinity by two points at 33 – 31.

The fourth was an equal contest where Trinity countered all of our offensive moves even as we did the same as our defence picked up a notch. This was in fact the most unlikely time to see the CBC team on court to trust their skill to make three pointers. They did just that hitting two three-pointers to level the score and force an overtime at 48 points apiece. The team scored 17 – 15 in the fourth quarter.

In the five minutes of overtime I saw the best collective and individual performance in this CBC team. They played extreme defence contesting every scoring opportunity by the opposition, double teaming and were creative in offence especially the last play which saw superb passing to players in key positions to finish and seal the game. The CBC team won overtime with a score line of 14 – 4.

Gleeson came on and immediately took control of point guard duties and control ball movement in the centre. He started us off in the second quarter with a two-pointer.

In the context of the game this were valuable. I also acknowledge his very good advice to the team. Squire ruled himself out of the game due to injury. I was very glad to see the team spirit he displayed by still coming out to support the team -- being the consummate team player that he is -on game day which is very much appreciated by the team.

Manship also contributed to the score line with every point critical. He was responsible for crucial rebounds and getting the ball back into play in addition (according to my notes) to making aggressive cuts to the basket. I appreciated his efforts In vocally supporting the team in this crucial Knockout game. That speaks volumes about his team spirit.

When you think about it, both Gleeson and Manship will be the core of an entirely new Open A Basketball team in 2014 and with that comes great responsibility.

Megins certainly reversed the trend from last week when he scored a season so far of 26 points in this game to triple his score from last week. What hasn’t changed was his dedication to the game. He plucked the ball out of thin air to in the centre court to frustrate the opposition outlet pass in addition to hitting two threes in that critical fourth quarter to contribute to an overtime play. Megins was also the end point of a brilliant offensive drive by CBC in the dying minutes in overtime. He is currently averaging 16 points for the season thus far. Megins played the top of the key position well in offence. He dominated the defensive rebounds and had five assists.

Nguyen has scored consistently in all four games and is credited with defensive rebounds as well. He played according to our plan to exert maximum defensive pressure especially to counter the opposition three-point shooting options. He is credited with five offensive rebounds. De Pinto was at his best in the offensive and defensive end as he controlled the play with his agility and read of the game.

He was quick to recover the loose ball. At one stage he was within millimetres of the half way line to prevent a cross court infringement and get us back in offence. De Pinto is credited with second highest steal percentage for the game.

Ciabattoni is averaging 11 points thus far a game. He is a consistent player who can change the direction of the game. He scored consistently in this game but also put in that critical two-pointer in the last minutes of the fourth quarter to level the scores and brought his tally for the game to 11 points. Ciabattoni unleased a three early in overtime to give us a much needed buffer. He also pulled in five offensive rebounds. Hilliker has scored in every game this season but did arguably a game changing crucial threepointer consecutive to Ciabattoni’s three. He hit the threes at important times in the last two games as well. Hilliker also is blessed with quick hands to deny the inside passes by the opposition and brings the ball down with authority.

Hilliker had 5 offensive rebounds in the game.

Kurvers had an extremely good game. He was instructed to work the baseline corridor and to present for a passing and scoring option in the low key. Kurvers consistently made front position, used his height and strength to swivel, drive to the basket to score or draw the foul for a chance at the charity stripe to convert which he did. He was also instrumental in securing the ball in rebounds. Finished the game with a well-deserved 15 points scoring in all five quarters in addition to three blocks, three ORs and five DRs. The coaching staff thank all parents and supporters on the day. You really make a difference. My thanks to Ann-Marie Kurvers, Tracey Gleeson and Chris Mellow. Open C Basketball CBC 24 defeated St Paul’s College 20 (25 May) In an evenly contested game of basketball CBC prevailed against St Paul’s. New centre Aidan top scored with 9 points. His rebounding under the boards was exceptional.

Matthew scored 6 points and his outside shooting continues to improve. Captain Vincent led by example in particular his defensive actions. Gian popped a beautiful three-pointer at a crucial moment in the game. Michael P (2 points) Minh and Phi displayed great desperation in offence and defence and Alex F did some tidy defensive work on their taller players. It was another terrific team effort.

CBC 32 defeated Trinity 30 (1 June) What a thriller! CBC hit the lead with only 40 seconds on the clock. It was an entertaining game of basketball with both teams showing fantastic desperation. Gian knocked down an incredible 3 three-pointers, to top score with 9.

Centre Aidan was super scoring 5. Michael P intercepted passes on many occasion scoring 7. Matthew scored 4 and his defensive work was excellent. Raisey (4) and Phi (2) handled ball very skilfully and once again Alex displayed

great defensive action against their talls. It was another fantastic team effort.

Junior B Basketball CBC 36 defeated Trinity College 33 The Junior B boys faced their toughest opponents thus far and just scraped over the line in what was a tense and tightly contested match at Starplex.

CBC and Trinity were ‘neck and neck’ for much of the game.

The final minute and half was where CBC finally pulled away from the opposition and impressed everyone who watched. The boys simply wanted to win more than their significantly taller opposition.

Lachlan and Nathan Grant-Allan contributed a combined 16 points for the game and challenged the Trinity ‘bigs’ with gusto. Mitchell Taylor was again fantastic on both ends of the floor using his athleticism to defend all five positions.

William Kuany came though with some timely baskets, including the final 3 points for the game. Theo Antoniou’s defensive effort was again top notch. Jack O’Nions proved that persistence pays off eventually as, despite a shaky start, he recovered to make his presence felt on the defensive end. Jayden Hoggett moved the ball around well and came up with one huge block. Foday Samuca was valuable in bringing the ball up the court as always.

We go into the bye week undefeated but fully focused on tough opponents Cabra in two weeks time.

Year 8 Debating CBC Purple defeated Glenunga HS Yellow Last Tuesday evening, 28 May, the Year 8 Purple debating team played Glenunga High School Yellow 8 at Pembroke Senior School. The topic for the debate was That Earth Hour is a waste of time and CBC was the affirmative team. The first CBC speaker was Siddarth Rajogopal who placed the team in a great position with his speech. As the debate went on our second affirmative speaker, Tate Henderson made a very strong rebuttal against Glenunga’s speakers with very good main points to support the team. Finally, our third speaker Jack Meaker rebutted and summed up the team’s case with confidence. I was Chairperson for this debate.

The debate was very close but CBC triumphed and won the debate against very strong competition.

at centre clearances and around the ground. Our players made a good effort with their skills in the wet conditions, however Nazareth were always close by. They had several players that we didn’t man up on, whilst their centre half forward displayed great marking skills in the wet and kicked thumping goals from a long range. Great games were being played by Thomas Melios-Travers and Charlie Meyer as midfielders, whilst Anthony Martino was playing a superb skippers game around the ground. Bryce Clonan applied pressure to the opposition, whether up forward or in defence. At half time we were two goals up and aware of the challenge that Nazareth would mount.

In the second half the skills of our forwards in Tom Pickering and Nick Delaat started to hurt the opposition.

Luke Yates, also in attack, was proving an important ball winner whilst Nick Adams in defence gave the team good drive, despite injury. Aiden Curyer played a great game on the wing, despite also carrying an injured knee from last game. Lachie Starr pressured his opponents in defence, whilst Nathan Byrnes used good skill and judgement on the other wing to give the forwards plenty of supply.

Nazareth looked like taking the game away from us early in the third quarter, however James Kittel-Neill continued his job of shutting down their centre half forward. James withstood the physical pressure and gave his team great drive and inspiration. Josh Dwyer was playing a good game across half back, reading the play and gathering numerous possessions. Sam Warren also applied pressure in our backlines and worked hard to clear the football with excellent team play. At three quarter time we had a 3 goal lead and looked well placed to continue.

The last quarter saw our lads increase their work rate and shrug off the determined Nazareth team. Great play

by Pickering, Yates and Delaat in the forward lines was complemented by strong play from Jarrod Hancock across half forward. Brady Goggins, who had tried hard to quell the dominance of the Nazareth rucks, played a great last half in a fashion that any midfielder would be proud of.

Despite being unwell, Pele gave the team some drive and competed well. Liam McGee went in hard for the ball in the second half and won free kicks. TMT was a highly effective and smart on baller all game whilst Jonty Rutai made it hard for the opposition to score the longer the game went.

Jack Poole competed well in defence in the last quarter to demonstrate that we had depth to call upon.

In the end it was a good result against talented opposition in difficult conditions. Mick Buttfield won the wine raffle whilst Hamish and Michael’s BBQ sold out. Funds were raised and a healthy camaraderie was established between Nazareth and CBC supporters in the inaugural clash between the two First XVIIIs. Year 10 Football football First XVIII Football CBC 11.6 (72) defeated Nazareth 6.4 (40) Last Saturday was our first home game and also the first day of Winter. Upon arrival at 11.30am it was a cold, wet and lonely scene, with barely a soul in sight. That didn’t stop Michael Petrilli and Hamish Richardson setting up a BBQ to raise funds for the Philippines pilgrimage later this year. Nazareth too were expected to be a tough opponent with several accomplished players, height and strength.

Our team was minus Chris Clemente, Dane Richardson and Josh Barnett whilst Pele Biancardi was unwell yet still played. The team arrived knowing that all players would need to step up to a higher level of play.

The first quarter saw Nazareth establish early dominance

CBC 5.6 (36) defeated St Peter’s 4.4 (28) Best Players: Strange, Bielby, Johansen, Crisanti, Perpetua and all played well.

Goal Scorers: Crisanti 2, Bielby, McPherson, Nicholson 1 CBC continued its good form with a comfortable win against St Peter’s at St Peter’s. Conditions at St Peter’s were excellent given the extent of rain the day before. However, regular showers made the ball extremely slippery and heavy and this set the game up for battle of wills.

In the first quarter St Peter’s had use of a strong breeze in the best conditions of the day and when the ball was lightest. This advantage helped them to a small quarter-time lead. We set up with Tom Bielby one-out near goals. He was well served by our mid-field, winning the ball into his vicinity and he looked very dangerous in this first term.

The second quarter was tight and St Peter’s set up with a loose man in defence to quell Bielby’s potential danger.

However, Bielby was shifted to half back as his power and drive was needed to add more attack from our defence.

Austin Crisanti was put one-out near goals and was therefore facing a 1 versus 2 contest. Crisanti was excellent in this position for the rest of the game. His ability to hit in hard and consistently knock opponents to the ground, whilst gaining possession and keeping his feet resulted in several scoring opportunities but only one goal.

St Peter’s played a loose style of game and occasionally won the ball in contests to get the ball wide to unchecked opponents during the third term. This allowed them to carry the ball and score 2 goals to our 3 points to take a thirdquarter-time lead of 3 points. Jack Strange was excellent in the clinches, winning the ball in packs and kicking it forward.

The final quarter continued to be a battle but we were very well served by Bielby at half back. We played an attacking game while remaining mindful of St Peter’s loose men. We were kicking toward the scoring end and it took little time before we goaled twice to set up a comfortable lead in heavy conditions. Crisanti showed excellent initiative after we gained our 9 point lead to move himself up the ground and into contests. He gained a number of decisive and penetrating disposals to clear CBC from trouble.

This was our second Division 1 scalp and our self-belief is growing. A difficult match against Sacred Heart at home awaits us after the long weekend and we should be confident of another win, provided we play to plan and as a team.

Year 8 Football Westminster School 8.6 (54) defeated CBC 6.8 (44) Goal Scorers: A Zito (3), J Tavian (2), D Barker (1) Best Players: S Daniele, A Zito, J Callahan, Z Robey, D Barker CBC responded from a couple of poor losses to really take the game up to Westminster. The opposition had some very big, fast players and looked like they were going to dominate the game. However, with the wet and slippery conditions, the ball was often on the ground and hard to control, enabling our smaller players the opportunity to get involved in the contest. Our first quarter was good; first to the contest; tackling with aggression; shepherding; smothering and desperate to keep the ball in our forward line, resulting in two goals. Unfortunately we also allowed the opposition to kick two easy goals and the game was evenly poised. In the second and third quarter we went to sleep, allowing Westminster to dominate the game, scoring 4-4 to our 6 points. What a pity some of those points were not goals. In the final quarter, CBC was committed and winning crucial contested possessions, our big players were dominating in our forward lines, resulting in us kicking 4 goals. However, like in the first quarter we once again allowed the opposition to kick two easy goals and we just ran out of time. For three quarters we could only manage 2 goals, yet in 15 minutes of football we kicked 4 goals and almost snatched victory from defeat.

Sam Daniele was superb in the way he chased, tackled and threw himself at the ball. He continually runs himself into the ground with very little support from his teammates.

This was a fantastic effort from Sam, considering he had been out with concussion for the past 2 weeks Anthony Zito got us back into the game, kicking 3 goals and looked extremely dangerous in our forward line. He caused many opposition turnovers with his attack on the ball. James Callahan was very creative in the midfield; his ability to gather the ball under pressure or run-down opponents to create turnovers, set a great example. After sustaining an injury during the game, he came back and really exerted an influence on the game. Zac Robey was once again very reliable on the last line of defence. His willingness to throw himself into contests and run straight at the ball needed to be emulated by more of his teammates. Dylan Barker worked hard on a wing picking up many possessions and often driving the ball into our forward lines. Although not as influential this week, he still tried hard and gave us a lift in INSIGHT

the final quarter.

Once again, 4-5 players in the best players is not enough.

CBC players need to use their strengths and back themselves against their opponents. Every player must be prepared to fiercely contest for the ball, rather than sit back and hope someone else does the hard work. There were some very encouraging signs and pleasing individual efforts throughout the game, but unfortunately in the second and third quarter, when the game was there to be won, CBC players were content being ‘spectators’, rather than commit themselves to winning the hard ball. All players need to be more consistent and committed for four quarters. We now enjoy a mid-term break and look forward to the last 3 games of the term.

Year 4/5 Football CBC 5.3 (33) defeated Highgate Green 2.7 (19) The boys got their first win of the year and it was hard work for them -- the weather was relentless and CBC was likewise. On a day when the rain just didn’t stop the whole team dug deep from the first siren to the last and got the win they so deserved. Our first quarter was a real slog out with both sides gaining possession but scoring opportunities rare. I asked the forward and back line to hold firm in the second and they did exactly that. CBC took the game into their control in the second and Highgate tried to reverse the momentum in the third with play mostly in Highgate’s centre half forward but our backline stood up and they never got the chance to turn the game around. The last quarter was tough but CBC did enough in the backline to hold on whilst sneaking a couple of last quarter goals. It was great to see some rebound football presenting scoring shots against the flow.

On a day when conditions were tough our boys stood up and played great football. Well done everyone -- a great game and a great win.

rugby Under 16 Rugby CBC 5T 2C 0P 29 defeated Pembroke 2T 1C 0P 12 Try Scorers: Zac Burgess (3), Kyle Fleetwood-Piper, Max Douglass Conversions: Zac Burgess (2) Best Players: Dylan Armstrong, Darcy Bagshaw- Thomson, Nick Adams, Luke Clifton Debuts: Aiden Zaffino Fresh from the Round 3 Bye, the CBC Under 16 Rugby Team edged out Pembroke to a convincing victory.

Pembroke gained the lead early in the match with the first try but failed to convert with the kick. We were off to a shakey start, perhaps lacking a bit of confidence missing a couple of key players. It was not too long though before we gained the lead with Max Douglass scoring the first try on the left wing, which was then converted with the kick from Zac Burgess. With a try under our belt, we played with confidence and more tries rolled in. We never looked back; Pembroke never came close to regaining the lead.

The teamwork was magnificent. Our players supported each other and each played a part in securing the win.

After a bit of reconnaissance last week at the Pembroke versus Westminster match, we forged a strategy to expose

their lack of structure in their back lines by getting the ball out to the CBC backs and exposing their gaps to run the ball up. The strategy worked well. Darcy and Nick also made good use of the boot by kicking the ball over the opponent’s back line which was then chased down with a lot of ground gained each time.

The second half saw the team lift and continue their form. Pembroke changed their strategy and had a more structured back line which meant our backs had to work harder to get through the gaps.

Our forward pack won the scrums allowing our scrum half’s to get the ball out to the backs, who made good use of possession of the ball by running and passing it wide -rucking and mauling all the way up to the try line.

The CBC School Song was sung loudly across the Kensington Gardens oval after the game.

CBC is top of the Under 16 Rugby Premiership Ladder with 20 points, second is PAC with 15 points.

Year 5A Soccer St Ignatius 9 defeated CBC 8 CBC started well in slippery conditions, having many opportunities to score but no luck. St Ignatius playing direct football got out to a 3-1 lead. CBC fought back to be equal at halftime. After the break St Ignatius wanted the ball a bit more, moving to lead the game 7-3.

CBC showed great character in fighting back to get within a goal. With the score being 8-7. A free kick for St Ignatius made it 9-7 with 2 minutes to go. We scored another quick goal and with the last kick of the game could have equalised. I was extremely impressed by the never say die spirit of the team. Well done.

CBC 7T 1C 0P 37 defeated PAC 4T 1C 0P 22 Try Scorers: Michael Clifton, Ricky Bracci 2 ,Dylan Adams 2, Anthony Francese Conversions: Alex Best Players: Joel, Dylan, Michael Clifton The CBC Under 14s experienced their first win of the season.

The result has been a product of expensive lessons in our previous two games. With 70% of the Under 14 team being new to rugby, the boys have had to learn fast about the expectations and physicality of a rugby match. Over the last month the Under 14 team has had some tough oppositions with a lot of experience. Our previous two games showed how vital tackling and defence is in rugby. They have also understood the importance of teamwork and that every boy has to play for the boy next to him if they want to achieve success.

Our third game and first win displayed these characteristics and many players showed what they are capable of. With a 37 point win against PAC the boys experienced their first taste of victory. Many positive signs for a young team learning the game. New to the forward pack, Joel Armstrong, has shown he is no push over getting to the rucks first and clearing most opposition away by himself.

This was the second week he has been voted Best on Ground by the coaches. Michael Clifton at flyhalf controlling his backline on attack but also the first man to put his body on the line in a tackle. Our two speedsters Anthony Francese and Dylan Adams showed great change in speed to score three tries between them.

This week we will be playing top of the log Sacred Heart College at their home ground. It will be fundamental that the boys slow down their attack and work as a team in defence.

They have been working hard and deserve a good result.

Soccer Open A Soccer Norwood Morialta HS 3 defeated CBC 2 Goal Scorer: Adam Russo Best Players: Carmine Alvaro, Nick Delaat, Andrew Tamburrino Despite the lack lustre beginning the boy’s fired up in the second half and it ended up being one of our best games so far. The squad is definitely starting to come together and perform at a higher level and more aggressively. A superb cross from James set Adam up for an excellent finish. Once again we were in a position to finish the game in front but things just didn’t go our way. Well done to all the lads, in

table tennis Open Table Tennis St Ignatius defeated CBC It was a wild and stormy afternoon as the bus chugged up Magill Road for an away game. The mood was sombre as the team and a quarter pondered the traffic, having hours before sat through a very graphic and very vividly moving driver education presentation. Driving is not for the faint hearted.

We lost by a handful of games, collected our gear and in the downpour rolled gently back towards the city. On the way we saw two road accidents, maybe not accidents but as the instructor had told us, “poor decisions”. The first, a rear end collision on Hackney Road which happened as we waited at the lights. The second on a very dark and foreboding Bartels Road -- a pedestrian had been hit by a motor car. We were glad to see the garage door roll up on Ifould Street and ease the bus back home.

We contemplated metal and glass, blood and bone as we wheeled our bicycles down Frome Road into the fading light.

Year 8/9 Table Tennis CBC vs Pembroke CBC’s Year 8 & 9 Table Tennis teams visited Pembroke in a torrential downpour last Friday the 31st May. The match started with the Year 9 Team A’s doubles game.

James Baddans and Michael O’Malley had great success in winning their first doubles game and both achieved in winning their singles. They helped the Year 9 Table Tennis win 3 games out of 12 games in total.

The Year 8 players met their strongest opposition ever since the start of the season. Dominic Nguyen and Andrew Hockley achieved a precious win for their doubles game because the final result was a 11 games to 1 win for the host Pembroke team.

It was a night that the CBC Table Tennis players tried and played in their best spirit, but the better team won the night.

However, it was such a great experience for them because the players had a chance to stretch themselves against fierce opposition and start to get ready for their match next time.
