The Power of Our Community I am delighted to share highlights of this year’s

accomplishments from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Ontario Region. Our work would not be possible without the funds raised through donations, corporate partnerships, volunteer support for community events, and, of course, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. Thousands walked and ran across the province to show support for our community and our cause. An impressive $22 million was raised across Ontario to fund research, education and advocacy initiatives. Your generosity and support makes everything we do possible!

As I leave my post as Chair, Ontario Region Board of Directors, I would like to extend an extra special thanks to each and every one of you who made our accomplishments possible this last year,

I have had the pleasure of working alongside Dr. Singh for the last several years and it is a deep personal privilege to pass the helm to my longtime friend and colleague. As I enter my ninth year as a Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation volunteer and my 11th year as a breast cancer survivor, I am very excited about taking on a new role as National Board Chair, and having the opportunity to learn more about both the common and diverse needs of our community across the country. Q&A

With Our New Board Chair A long-time friend and supporter of Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Dr. Gurmit Singh is the newly appointed Chair of the Ontario Region Board of Directors effective June 2012. As Professor of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at McMaster University and Senior Scientist at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, he is currently looking at ways to address breast cancer pain without the use of prescription narcotics. Dr. Singh, the first scientist to serve as our Chair, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his new role – as a researcher, educator and advocate.

Q

What is one important trend in breast cancer research? Breast cancer is not one,

but many different diseases. This means we have a greater understanding of how and why breast cancers grow, change, spread and recur. We know about genetic mutations that increase some women’s risk. We now have new, tailored strategies to monitor and treat higherrisk women.

Q

Are we getting closer to a world without breast cancer? We are getting

there. Certainly as a scientist, I am one of the first to acknowledge that finding a cure is taking longer than anyone would like. Breast cancer is a very complex disease. It is highly variable and influenced by so many different risk factors – including genetics, biology, environment and lifestyle. As a result we need to treat an individual according to her or his genetic signatures. What

I hope to see in the future is a simple blood test that will be able to identify breast cancer. We know much more now than we did previously and we are making progress.

Q

What is your own breast cancer research focus? I am focused on experimental

therapeutics in breast cancer, with an emphasis in bone metastasis and cancer pain. I want to better understand the intense pain suffered by patients with certain types of breast cancer. Treatment advances have resulted in better drugs, which can be a double-edged sword in the sense that people are living

Q

As the first scientist to serve as Ontario Chair what will your approach be?

I want to see our interaction with other charities increase. For example, there are common elements of treatment for different cancers and if we can find common research ground with other cancer charities, our collective dollars could go further faster. This could include making new connections with government and other partners on research that would aim to make a difference in the quality of life of women living with breast cancer and their families.

longer but they’re telling us that they are in a lot of pain. Understanding and ultimately stopping the pain is not the same as curing the disease, but it is extremely important to someone’s quality of life. Part of what keeps me going back to the lab everyday is the conversations I have with women living with breast cancer. Their stories inspire me. 2012 Annual Report | 3

RESEARCH INVESTMENTS AT WORK We hope to show that a simple and inexpensive vitamin has the potential to be both a treatment and preventative agent for breast cancer patients,” says Dr. Arnaout.

Vitamin D has Powerful Potential Angel Arnaout, MD From left: Yekaterina Poloz, PhD, Toni Zhong, MD and Angel Arnaout, MD are three of our funded researchers working to improve the care and quality of life for women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Our investments in relevant and innovative research are changing the landscape of what is known and understood about breast cancer. Our funding translates into advancements to improve care and quality of life.

Ottawa Hospital Research Institute Vitamin D is produced by our bodies from the sun’s rays and found in salmon, tuna, and other in easily digestible pill form. Recent research indicates this vitamin may also block the progression of breast, colon and other cancers. Some doctors are already adding it to their recommended cancer therapies alongside more conventional treatments. ADVOCACY IN ACTION

A Strong Voice for Screening

Rachael Smith photographed with her family in Toronto. From left, daughter Emma, Rachael, daughter Grace and husband Andrew Howard.

Scientific evidence shows that earlier detection and diagnosis of breast cancer can save lives among women age 40-49 by at least 25 per cent. Here in Ontario, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and its supporters are continuing to advocate for the Ontario Breast Screening Program’s expansion to include women in their 40s and are hoping that the Ontario Government will follow in the footsteps of the seven other provinces and territories who are already screening these women. Thousands of people have spoken out, including Yard Sale for the Cure founder Rachael Smith. Rachael, a Toronto mother of two, was just 43 when she found a lump during self-examination. Surgery was followed by eight weeks of chemotherapy and, later, a course of radiation treatment. Rachael, now 51, is cancer-free. Rachael is concerned the message that women 40-49 don’t need to be screened will put women’s lives at risk. “My breast cancer could have been missed so easily. I would rather have all the information about getting regular mammograms than look back in regret, and I think most women feel the same way,” says Rachael. “I will certainly encourage my two daughters to be screened.” In partnership with the Foundation, Rachael is a strong advocate for screening. More than $1 million to fund groundbreaking research, education and advocacy initiatives has been raised through Yard Sale for the Cure, one of the Foundation’s signature events, which was started by Rachael and her family in 2005.

PROMOTING HEALTHIER LIVING

Sharing her Story and Making a Difference At 39, Gloria Lowe was diagnosed with ocular melanoma and then at 46, with Stage II breast cancer. Doctors initially missed both cancers. Now 51 and healthy, Gloria shares her story along with the latest information about breast health and breast cancer risk through Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s newest education campaign. The Reduce Your Risk Campaign helps women make informed decisions about practical changes to reduce breast cancer risk. We know nearly 40 per cent of breast cancers are preventable through food, nutrition, maintaining a healthy body weight and regular physical activity.

e need this kind of incredibly helpful material W to be able to discuss breast cancer openly with our mothers, our daughters, our nanas and nieces,” says Gloria.

Gloria believes by telling her own story, another woman’s future could be different. She says, “the more information available to women, the better informed they are about their own health. Sharing this kind of knowledge is very powerful.” The campaign helps women take concrete steps to reduce their breast cancer risk and understand more about breast health. “We need this kind of incredibly helpful material to be able to discuss breast cancer openly with our mothers, daughters, nanas and nieces,” says Gloria. The information is also important for women like Gloria who want information about how to reduce their risk of recurrence. Gloria recently visited a new clinic in Huntsville, where she lives. After Gloria’s conversation with one of the clinic’s nurse practitioners, the clinic and staff are now more actively promoting breast health.

Visit www.reduceyourbreastcancerrisk.com to learn about breast health and practical steps to reduce personal risk, and get news about breast cancer prevention research and advocacy. To date, more than 13,000 friends and followers have joined the campaign.

COMMUNITY-DRIVEN SUCCESS Going the Distance

Each step in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure, each mile in a truck convoy, and each treasure sold at a community yard sale bring us closer to creating a future without breast cancer. Because of your generosity, through hundreds of fundraising events, the Foundation was able to raise $22.4 million this past year to make new investments in funding relevant, innovative research, and supporting and advocating for the breast cancer community. These stories are about two of the incredible volunteers who make these investments possible.

I am blessed with a large network of family and friends who support a cause I believe in. And at the Run itself, the energy and emotion of 9,000 runners in Ottawa is a huge motivator to go the distance,” says Paul, whose Run T-shirt bears his mother’s name and photo. “Volunteers are the catalysts to raise funds and raise consciousness of breast health. When a person gives – whether as a runner, an organizer or by donating funds – it makes a big difference. Without the CIBC Run for the Cure and the Foundation, we would not be getting closer to a future without breast cancer.” This year marked the 15th year of CIBC’s title sponsorship of the event. In 2011, thousands of CIBC employees, their families and friends participated, joining 170,000 people in 60 communities across Canada. In Ontario, together we raised $15 million for critical new investments.

as their families and friends. A 25-year veteran of the industry, Joanne Millen-MacKenzie, heads the event. Since 2010 the group has raised more than $80,000. Joanne, a breast cancer survivor herself, is determined to increase the number of dollars raised and the trucks participating in the convoy.

This fun event connects and celebrates women who work in a male dominated field. And we all have someone to drive for, someone we have lost to breast cancer. I drive for my Aunt Anna, who passed away a few years ago. My inspiration comes from her. That inspiration helps me support my fellow drivers – both women and men raise funds for research and education activities,” says Joanne.

INSPIRING NEW LEADERS

Corporate Leaders Working Together Leaders for the Cure Co-Chair, Gord Hicks is the CEO of Brookfield LePage Johnson Controls (BLJC) in Markham. He is also an active member of The Climate Reality Project Board of Directors. Gord sees these diverse roles as highly complementary – CEO, environmental advocate and raising funds and awareness for the Foundation. Leaders for the Cure enlists top executives like Gord who raise awareness and much-needed funds. These efforts contribute handsomely to Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation research, education and advocacy initiatives. Launched in April 2009, the Leaders For the Cure program has a goal to raise more than $1 million by the end of 2013 and they are already more than half way there.

By supporting the Foundation work, I am furthering the culture of caring we have created in my own workplace at BLJC,” says Gord.

When colleagues ask how he is able to give so much time and energy to the cause, Gord is clear: “As business leaders, we need to help our workforce in their personal

my involvement, as does the memory of my grandmother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was a boy. In 2011 my dad was diagnosed with stomach cancer. While my dad’s cancer is different, the leading research being done on genes and cancer is highly complementary. Part of his treatment included Herceptin, a drug often used for the treatment of breast cancer. The health of my colleagues and family members drives my involvement and encourages me to reach out to others.” 2012 Annual Report | 9
