About the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Who we are Breast cancer was a disease rarely talked about. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s volunteer founders gave this cause a voice in 1986. Through the support of an incredible network of donors, volunteers, CIBC Run for the Cure participants and partners, we have made significant progress and stayed true to our grassroots beginnings. We are the largest non-government funder of breast cancer research in Canada – and through advocacy and education, we’re spreading the word about breast health and risk reduction.
With your support
With breast cancer affecting so many Canadians and their families, it’s no wonder the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation has the support of millions.
Since 1986, we have funded over $274 million towards breast cancer research grants and fellowships.
With the help of our donors, partners, corporate sponsors and volunteers, the Foundation has provided transformative support for the cause.
In 2012 alone, we funded over $26.5 million in over 90 grants across Canada.
Advocacy and education efforts led by the Foundation have increased breast cancer screening, community knowledge about breast cancer and risk reduction.
Where Our Funds Come From
Research funded by the Foundation has led to more effective treatment options that are helping to improve the quality of life for those diagnosed with the disease.
The majority of the money raised comes from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure.
We are setting the pace for advancements in risk reduction, earlier detection, treatments and after-care support.
Foundation researchers have led advancements with global impact and as a result, today, the five-year survival rate for women in Canada diagnosed with breast cancer is 88 per cent and the mortality rate is down by almost 40 per cent since the 1950s. That’s real progress that our supporters have helped drive.

Moving toward the future Why should we still support breast cancer? While much progress has been made, there is still a long way to go. Breast cancer continues to be the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Canadian women. To address this, the Foundation has taken a leadership role in addressing nationally identified priorities for breast cancer. Our regional grants fund the most promising research in the country, focused on addressing the disease across the breast cancer spectrum. Our national grant program has committed $6 million over the next five years to address the needs of young women with breast cancer, as breast cancer tends to be more aggressive in younger women, often moving to advanced stages more quickly.
Making an Impact Research Continued support allows the Foundation to play a vital role in internationally acclaimed, groundbreaking research discoveries. Our ongoing work is addressing key priorities that are changing lives, these include:
Contributing to oNGOING world renowned breast cancer research
Dr. Jim Brophy & Dr. Margaret Keith
recently made international headlines for their findings on breast cancer and the workplace, funded by the Foundation. They found an average increase in breast cancer risk of 42 per cent for women who work for a 10 year period in environments with high exposure to carcinogens and hormone disrupting chemicals. This landmark research provides new evidence to help inform discussions with governments, industry, health care providers and stakeholders about the serious effects occupational risk factors can have on the development of breast cancer, which impacts women every day in Ontario, across Canada and around the world.
SUPPORTING research breakthroughs
Dr. Sam Aparicio & Dr. Marco Marra led research that successfully decoded the genome of a primary breast cancer tumor and a secondary metastatic breast cancer tumor, learning that within a breast cancer tumor not all cells will carry the same genetic mutations and that over time, the cells can continue to mutate. Because of their research we now know that breast cancers need to be accounted for at every stage of tackling the disease and have the genomic tools to help better develop assessment tools and therefore a more targeted treatment.
Making an Impact Education
Improving patient experience and personalizing treatment
The Foundation is dedicated to advocating for and supporting the breast cancer community. We’re working to educate Canadians about breast cancer risk, being breast aware and advocating for equal access to care. Our community health grants enable us to collaborate with grassroots organizations and reach communities across ethno-cultural backgrounds with important breast health and breast cancer information.
Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital - conducted research that has led to a new technological tool called DyNaMo that analyzes breast cancer tumours to predict a patient’s chances of recovery with over 80 per cent accuracy. This in turn helps determine a patient’s best treatment options.
For example, the Prairies/NWT Region’s Youth Advisory Council is dedicated to educating youth about risk reduction, early detection, and breast health information. The program works with the community to develop resources and engage young Canadians about the cause. This past summer, the Foundation’s Ontario Region embarked on The Pink Tour, which travelled across Ontario to 124 communities and invited over 35,000 visitors on board the Pink Tour bus to learn about breast health and breast cancer screening. Similar education programs have also been carried out in BC/Yukon and Atlantic Canada.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada’s largest single day, volunteer-driven fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, education and awareness programs. The first event took place in Toronto in 1992 and was organized by a small group of volunteers who wanted to raise awareness and funds for the breast cancer cause. The CIBC Run for the Cure has made great strides since then, while staying true to its grassroots and our volunteer founders’ vision.

National Sponsors CIBC
Title Sponsor
CIBC’s involvement in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure started with passionate employees who ran for a colleague with breast cancer back in 1992. Two years later, CIBC was a National Sponsor of the event and since then, the CIBC Run for the Cure has become part of their corporate DNA. In 2012, 13,000 CIBC employees either participated or volunteered their time to support the event, raising $3 million in support for the Foundation. In 2012, CIBC sponsored the Post Secondary Challenge for the second year, encouraging universities and colleges to participate and fundraise, while building awareness about breast cancer risks and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Top fundraisers had the chance to win CIBC Education Awards valued at $2,500. A live concert by Canadian band Walk Off the Earth was awarded to the highest fundraising institution. CIBC also launched three innovative social media initiatives – CIBC Pinspiration, encouraging supporters to use Pinterest to share what inspires them; Tweet the Run, encouraging use of #CIBCRunfortheCure to win 50,000 Aeroplan miles; and the ‘For All My Girls’ Mash-App on Facebook, inviting users to build an online video showcasing the women in their lives and encouraging Canadians to join the CIBC Run for the Cure. CIBC branches actively demonstrated their support through fundraising events, promotional displays, and the coveted CIBC Pink Collection™ - the 2012 Collection included a teddy bear, bracelet, key chain, lapel pin and tote bag, with 100% of net proceeds benefitting the Foundation. On Run day items from the CIBC Pink Collection™ were available on-site across Canada, and CIBC helped to create lasting memories for participants by hosting digital photo booths in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal and Halifax, and autograph sessions with Curtis Joseph at the Toronto site and Trevor Linden at the Vancouver site. CIBC employees at every level across the organization are dedicated to the CIBC Run for the Cure and to creating a future without breast cancer.
We are proud to team up with our National Sponsors to produce an event that is hopeful, inspirational and has significant impact within the breast cancer community.
“Walk into one of CIBC’s more than 1,100 branches in the months leading up to Run day and you’ll find pink everywhere. The event is part of the fabric of our organization.” says Christina Kramer, Executive Vice-President, CIBC.

New Balance New Balance is proud to support the CIBC Run for the Cure and breast cancer survivors. In 2012, New Balance provided more than 12,000 pink technical t-shirts to survivor participants and also sponsored the Survivor Clinics, hosted by Running Room. Survivor Clinics provide those who have been affected by breast cancer with training to prepare for the CIBC Run for the Cure while connecting with caring supporters. On Run day, New Balance activated at three major urban centres by offering products in return for a donation to the Foundation, and teamed up with Running Room for fittings of New Balance running shoes. Participants who reached the $1,500 fundraising level could select a pair of New Balance running shoes and a gym bag through the Fundraising Rewards program. New Balance raises additional funds through their Lace Up for the Cure program, contributing up to $40,000 to the Foundation annually from the sale of specially branded 860 running shoes.

Running Room offers Run kit pickup at stores across Canada, and increases awareness and encourages fundraising through in-store, online, and print advertising. Running Room, in conjunction with New Balance, hosts Survivor Clinics providing survivors who have a goal of completing the 5k run with specialized training. In 2012, Survivor Clinic participants in Toronto were excited to run alongside Running Room founder John Stanton! On Run day, Running Room made their Pink Ribbon Wear clothing line available for purchase at many Run locations across Canada, with a portion of proceeds benefitting the Foundation. Pink Ribbon Wear articles are available year-round at Running Room stores, and through this program Running Room has contributed over $950,000 to the Foundation. At all Run sites across Canada, teams dressed in Get Cracking® t-shirts led participants in an active warm-up designed to engage and energize runners and walkers before they headed to the start line. The Egg Farmers of Canada tent was popular with participants on Run day, with a number of giveaways including bags, microwave egg cookers and recipe cards. This year, over 200 farmers, staff, family and friends participated from coast to coast, raising over $45,000 for the Foundation. In the months leading up to Run day, Egg Farmers of Canada created awareness for the event and encouraged participation through a national in-store promotion along with a coupon for eggs, which was found in grocery stores in September.
Revlon Through their enthusiastic CIBC Run for the Cure fundraising committee and the numerous events held throughout the year to recruit participants and raise funds, Team Revlon is a shining example of dynamic corporate fundraising. In association with their sponsorship of the CIBC Run for the Cure, Revlon is on-site at major centres on Run day including Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, offering participants the opportunity to make a donation in return for a valuable gift pack of Revlon products. Every dollar raised is contributed to the Foundation as part of Team Revlon’s fundraising total. Revlon’s unique social media campaign tied to the event, and their October cause marketing program, help to extend the reach of the CIBC Run for the Cure beyond Run day.
Official National Suppliers Our Official National Suppliers help to create a positive participant experience at the CIBC Run for the Cure, and add value to the event by providing donations of essential products on Run day. Their support includes product donations, as well as coordination of the logistics associated with ensuring the products arrive at each Run site across Canada in time for the event. In 2012, through valuable partnerships with Dole Sparklers, Lipton Iced Tea, and Country Harvest, participants were once again hydrated and re-energized after completing their run or walk. Similar to the National Sponsors, these brands also make a year-round commitment to the Foundation through individual cause marketing programs. In addition, PepsiCo’s team ‘Pepsi Inspires Hope’ continues to be the second highest fundraising team Canada-wide, with an inspirational committee and creative fundraising events held in the months leading up to the event.

Volunteers Volunteer with us
Volunteer leadership
Volunteers are at the heart of the success of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. This volunteer-driven event relies on thousands of volunteers each year. In fact, the CIBC Run for the Cure was started in 1992 by a group of dedicated women with a personal connection to breast cancer and has been driven by a strong volunteer force ever since.
There is a special group of dedicated volunteers that is the driving force behind the CIBC Run for the Cure in each Run site across Canada. These Volunteer Run Directors and committee members are true local heroes, ensuring we hold safe events and raise much needed funds for the breast cancer cause.
Often motivated by a personal connection to the cause, over 12,000 volunteers generously assist with everything from setting up the route, hanging banners, handing out bagels or being a part of a “cheering squad” to encourage and thank runners and walkers for their support along the route on Run day.
The Foundation is extremely grateful for our outstanding volunteers as they breathe passion into everything they do. Their energy, drive and commitment to the cause continues to inspire us and allows us to fund relevant and innovative research while supporting and advocating for the breast cancer community.
“Watching the crowd on Run day is an emotional experience and makes me realize that I am doing my part in helping create a future without breast cancer!”

Stephanie Hale, Volunteer Run Director, Halifax
“I began volunteering with the Foundation after being personally touched by breast cancer with the loss of my grandma and colleagues from CIBC. I wanted to give my time, energy and fundraising dollars to help create a future without breast cancer. I continue to volunteer because I know I am making a difference.”
“This year’s Winnipeg CIBC Run for the Cure was wonderful! It not only raised more dollars but it raised my spirits. As I stood outside of Shaw Park and watched the participants start to arrive and join the volunteers who had been there most of the night setting up, I was humbled by the realization that all these people wanted to join us, the committee, in making a difference. I am so proud of my fellow Manitobans, thank you.”
“I volunteer as a Run Director because of the wonderful experience is provides back to me. The Foundation is very supportive, my relationship with my Co-Run Director is amazing, and when I look around the committee table and I hear everyone’s stories, I am constantly reminded of why I volunteer for the Foundation - for my mum.”
