Today’s boys...tomorrow’s gentlemen CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 3 Term 3
Front page: Year 10 Jake Goncalves receiving his Certificate of Excellence from Mr Shaun Kenny at the College Assembly
From the Principal Celebrating Achievement On Wednesday morning of this week the College conducted an assembly to recognise the outstanding academic achievement of many of our students during the first semester. Certificates of Excellence were presented to a number of boys from each Year level in recognition of their diligence and aptitude. Many of the parents and family members of our award winners were present, and it is always pleasing to have all sectors of our community represented at the one event.

In my address to the boys, I spoke about the importance of hard work in the process of developing our gifts into talents. It is not appropriate for anyone to take credit for their natural ability, as this is simply a result of God’s largesse. It is when we seek to maximise
this ability through factors such as consistent application, making discerning judgements and cooperating with others, that a person may achieve a sense of pride. These are traits that characterise the individual and are ‘under our control’. It is in this regard that improvement and achievement are equally accessible to all. There were two particular students recognised individually for further achievement at our assembly. The first was Ben Anandappa (Year 12) who was presented with a bronze medal which he had gained at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Moscow last month. This recognition of Ben’s ability, amongst the best Chemistry students in the world, is a remarkable accolade. The second presentation was made to Nicholas Funga (Year 9) to acknowledge his selection in the ACC All Stars Cross Country team.

This is also a marvellous achievement and worthy recognition of Nick’s talent and hard work. As part of the assembly I challenged all of the boys to consider for what reason each of them would be recognised at one of our gatherings in the future. They each have gifts and talents and we look forward to celebrating them over the course of this semester and in the years to come.
Performing Arts Festival On Wednesday evening of this week, a large number of our students took part in the Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival as members of our Big Band or Jazz Orchestra. It is always pleasing to see the dedication and development of these young musicians and their performances were suitably acclaimed by the adjudicator on the night. Earlier this week we were also advised that the Guitar Ensembles 1 and 2 had

received an Honourable Mention and Certificate of Merit respectively as part of the Festival. Congratulations to the students involved in these groups. Promoting the Arts is an important function of all schools and is particularly critical in a boys’ College such as CBC. I know that our music parents appreciate the selfless work undertaken in this regard by Mr Shane Mancuso and all of the other staff in the Arts Learning Area. There are many opportunities made available to the boys in the areas of Music, Art and Drama and I commend those students who involve themselves so enthusiastically in these activities.
