to acknowledge and address this than continue in ignorance. Beyond this, I believe that there is another real danger in this public debate and this entails giving NAPLAN a status which it neither deserves nor seeks. At the time of enrolling into our College, NAPLAN results from primary school are used to assist with appropriate placement and intervention for each individual boy. They are never used to prioritise applicants for entry. Similarly, I seriously doubt that prospective families place much emphasis upon our historical NAPLAN results when selecting a school for their son. I would hope, and firmly believe, that a much higher priority would be placed upon an education in faith, the quality of relationships and the general pursuit of excellence among many other things. The summary I have provided at the end of my article each year seems equally valid now. We will happily participate in NAPLAN testing; we will not consume valuable time and unduly stress students by ’teaching to the test’; and we will continue to adopt a broad perspective that emphasises a well-rounded education designed to assist families in the development of

A taste of things to come... To encourage your contributions to the CBC cookbook, every fortnight we will provide you with a tasty recipe from the CBC community that your boys are bound to love.
Chocolate Brownies from Lynn Tomlinson (Joel and Toby’s mum) All of my boys love these brownies; they never last long in our house. When I am making them to take to a friend’s house they always hope that the edges will go a bit crispy so that when I cut it into squares I will cut the edges off and they can eat them. Ingredients 175g butter 370g castor sugar 1tsp vanilla essence 3 eggs 125g plain flour 1tsp baking powder 50g cocoa 250g white chocolate bits Method 1. Chop the butter and place it in a saucepan. Melt it over a low heat. 2. Pour the melted butter into a mixing bowl and then add the sugar and vanilla essence, stir well. 3. Break the eggs into another bowl and beat them. 4. Slowly add the eggs to the butter and sugar mixing them together. 5. Mix the flour, cocoa and baking powder together and sift them into the mixture. 6. Stir all ingredients together so that they are well combined. 7. Add the chocolate bits and stir these through the mixture. 8. Pour into a greased and lined rectangular baking tray (approx. 22 x 30cm) 9. Bake for about 35-40 minutes at 180c. 10 Be careful not to overcook, as they are particularly nice when they are a bit chewy.
Take it out when it is a bit crispy on top and the edges, but still soft in the middle.
Cool on a rack and then cut into squares. Dust with icing sugar.
