Mayor’s Message

Dear Resident Welcome to a special edition of

City of Canterbury Bankstown’s newsletter, Keep Connected. We’re bringing you the latest updates from Council and what we are delivering for our community. Given these historic times we wanted to do something a little different. The Coronavirus pandemic has had a massive impact on people. It has stopped us from doing a lot of what we love, and has even kept us from the ones we love. So, we decided it was time to stop thinking of what can’t be done, and start thinking of what is being done in our community and how Council is playing its part. For instance, you can read how local businesses are tapping into my $250,000 Smart City Smart Business Grants Program. Read how one business owner has used funding from the program to improve their digital advertising to keep connected with customers.

Residents are rediscovering simple pleasures like gardening and time at home with the family. Also, Council’s Keep Connected Program is helping you with what’s happening in Canterbury-Bankstown online. If you’re interested in what local community groups are up to, you may be interested to know, with the support of Council, I fast-tracked $200,000 from the 2020/21 Community Grants Program to make it available for community groups this financial year. This is to provide flexible financial assistance to eligible not for profit community groups to support the provision of programs and services that provide crisis and emergency relief services to people currently experiencing genuine hardship due to the crisis. This edition has something to offer for everyone. But don’t just take my word for it, have a read for yourself. Remember, City of Canterbury Bankstown is still delivering services and is here to help. If you have any Coronavirus related concerns, contact us on our dedicated number 13 CORONA (13 267 662). History repeats itself Global pandemics are often described as being once in a century events. Oddly, exactly one hundred years ago another global pandemic was afoot – Spanish Influenza. On Thursday 30 January, 1919 the NSW Government introduced measures to reduce infection of influenza. A mask had to be worn outside and breaches could result in penalties of up to 10 pounds – about $800 in today’s money. Public gatherings were banned and the borders into NSW closed. In 1919, Canterbury-Bankstown was a semi-rural area. The former Canterbury Municipality had a

4

population of only 35,000 and Bankstown had a population of 8,000. There was no local hospital in the area. “Relief Depots” staffed by volunteers were established in both Councils to assist those impacted. Canterbury Public School even prepared meals from their cookery school. Residents infected with influenza placed S.O.S cards in their window to attract the attention of volunteers who would provide food and medical help. Volunteers patrolled each street twice a day to look for S.O.S cards and to deliver food.

It’s another reminder that in this City, we’ve always helped one another and we’ll do it again. Thank you From our city to you While we stayed home and did our part to flatten the curve, healthcare workers were out on the frontline in the battle against COVID-19. In healthcare, work is rarely nine to five. Instead, it is early mornings and late nights. Over 3,600 Canterbury-Bankstown locals work at a hospital, making it the number one place of employment for the city.

Croydon Park local, John Townsend is just one of the many healthcare workers on the frontline fighting the Coronavirus pandemic. After volunteering with the NSW State Emergency Service, John left a decadelong career to pursue nursing, swapping an office for a Western Sydney emergency department. “In nursing, I’m passionate about helping people through a difficult point in their lives and doing what I can to make it as easy, and forgettable, as possible.” Now in his second year of practice as a registered nurse, he’s been working with patients in critical care since the start of the pandemic. John said the commitment his colleagues have shown has been overwhelming.

“Seeing so many people work together to get us all through this has been quite an honour. “I can now understand to a small degree how people of generations before me would put themselves in harm’s way without giving it a second thought, it’s all about the bigger picture of getting everybody through the pandemic safely.” John thanked the community for making the job of healthcare workers easier, by staying home and away from large public gatherings. To all our healthcare workers on the frontline, we hope you can enjoy the simple pleasures in life again very soon. A big heartfelt thank you from the City of Canterbury Bankstown.

Everybody has a role to play in making sure we get through it.

The snowpeas don’t care that there is a global pandemic.

Life grows on Finding yourself in your garden more often? You’re not alone. In CBCity, people are discovering the quiet joy in watching things grow in their backyard or balcony. Not only can gardening help your hippocket and teach your kids a thing or two, it’s also great for escaping the stresses of ordinary life. Nataasha Baker is a Canterbury local taking comfort in growing pumpkins, sunflowers and snow peas. She says that unlike people, “snow peas don’t care that there is a global pandemic.” “I think it’s important in uncertain times to garden:

turning your focus to a small, controllable thing makes life seem just a little more normal,” she says. Being in the lucky group of people who can work from home, Nataasha has swapped the time she would spend commuting to work, with time in the garden. She shares her pumpkin crop with her neighbours but does a “knock and run” to keep up social distancing. Through it all, Nataasha says enjoying gardening is all about keeping hope (and her plants), alive. “Planting seeds feels like a defiant act of hope, the world keeps turning and seeds keep sprouting. Life grows on.”

Big changes make fuller bins Big changes mean our bins are filling faster. Try these handy hints. 1. We’ve flattened the COVID-19 curve, so flatten your cardboard boxes and plastics containers. 2. We’ve kept a lid on COVID-19, so take the lids off bottles and containers. 3. We’ve re-invented ourselves during social isolation, so re-invent leftover food as new meals or compost. (Hint: you can bury scraps in the garden.) 4. We’ve become a bit soft by overeating, so take your soft plastics (like bread bags) to Coles or Woolies to be recycled.

Peaceful breathing exercises Pandemic or no pandemic, paying attention to your breathing is a valuable tool. It’s calming and sends more oxygen to your organs. Whatever you’re doing, it’s great to take a break and take a breath. Try these easy steps:

Imagine your chest expanding as the air fills your lungs when you inhale. Feel your breath and your tension release as you exhale.

1. Find a quiet place. 2.  Settle yourself in a comfortable position. You can sit or lie down. 3.   Close your eyes and place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. 4.   Breathe normally. Notice how your chest and belly move as you breathe in and out. 5.  After a few moments, breathe intentionally for four counts. Pause and hold your breath and then breathe out for four counts.

Easy Moves at Home With more freedom to get out and get fit, we know we should get 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity every day. It can be hard, especially with the colder weather. Take a look at this simple “sit to stand” exercise you can do at home. It strengthens legs and helps improve your balance and walking. Start getting active with three repetitions and work your way up to 20 repetitions.

Home-made hummus Stocked up on too many tinned goods? Try this easy recipe for a classic and delicious dip. You’ll need a tin of chickpeas and some pantry staples. Ingredients •  400-500 grams of tinned chickpeas •  ¼ cup fresh lemon juice •  ¼ cup well-stirred tahini •  1 small garlic clove, minced •  2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving •  ½ teaspoon ground cumin •  Salt •  3 tablespoons of water •  Ground paprika or sumac to serve Method 1. Pour the tahini and lemon juice into a food processor. Mix for one minute. 2. A dd garlic clove and mix for one minute. 3. A dd salt, cumin and olive oil and mix for one minute. 4. Slowly drizzle cold water into the processor while it is running. The water will turn the smooth mixture into a fluffy, luxurious dip.

Virtual exhibition Look out for the virtual art exhibition by respected artist from Broken Hill, Badger Bates. Titled The River is our Past, Present and Future, this exhibition will be featured on CBTV until Friday 24 July. Badger is known for using art to educate people about the beautiful but endangered Darling River, or as his people call it, the Baaka, which is the mother of the Barkandji people. Commenting on the exhibition and the Baaka, Badger says, “we’re not protecting it just for my people. It belongs to everyone, we must respect it.” View the virtual art exhibition at cb.city/cbtv

Are you an artist? Bankstown Arts Centre is looking for artists who produce art that is sustainable and connected to the City of Canterbury Bankstown.

Piece by piece, teens leave their mark If you’re jogging or walking around Canterbury, try taking a detour to see the new Robert Street mosaic at Canterbury Town Centre. Ana Vlattas, Kassandra Pegios and Zoey Sampsonis are three very creative teens. They’re the winners of the Robert Street Steps Project – an art competition which now sees their artworks re-produced on a new tile mosaic at Canterbury Town Centre. Ana won a first place prize of $2,000 and runners-up Kassandra and Zoey won $1,000 each. 16-year-old, Zoey Sampsonis says she never imagined winning. “To be honest, when I first found out I was a joint winner along with my fellow art school friends I could not believe it,” she says. “My friends and family were very impressed and were in disbelief; I enjoy art and creative

projects but never imagined winning,” she says. Zoey’s artwork was one of three winning entries, which she says incorporates street art, graffiti and is inspired by urban architecture and lifestyle. A keen artist with architectural aspirations, Kassandra Pegios says her artwork was inspired by her local area. “It was honestly the best experience and I remember my mum and I jumping around the house in joy,” she says. “Having my work displayed in a public place is a massive deal for me. It makes me so happy to think that so many people will be walking by.”

Business

Businesses turn to technology If there is one thing that COVID-19 isn’t going to stop; it’s local businesses using technology to keep serving their customers. That is why the new Smart City Smart Business Grants program has given businesses a boost to keep going in the digital world. An intial pool of $250,000 has helped businesses develop or improve their e-commerce capabilities and online marketing. A maximum of $2,000 was accessible to individual businesses within the local area.

I’ve got orders from South Australia, Queensland and Victoria. 14

Brandy Wu successfully applied for the business grant to help her Ashburybased salon, Organic Hair Culture, to develop Google Ads and reinvigorate the salon’s website. Ms Wu says tapping into online advertising is something she had overlooked in the past, but now sees its value, especially during such challenging times due to COVID-19.

clientele and expand its market beyond the borders of Canterbury-Bankstown. “I’ve got orders from South Australia, Queensland and Victoria. They’re not our clients but they’re users of a premium product we exclusively stock… so this grant is very helpful and timely (to help),” she says.

She says the grant funding has helped build the business’s

Canterbury Bankstown Chamber of Commerce CEO Wally Mehanna praised the Council’s program. “Embracing technology is very costly at the moment… technology and innovation are the two biggest platforms for moving into the future… (so) this is a leading attitude Council has taken, and we commend the Mayor and his team,” he says.

We’re for local business Forty-eight percent of Canterbury-Bankstown locals said they were more inclined to choose small local shops after lockdown.
