1.1 Capability
ASPECT Studios are an award winning team of landscape architects, urban designers and living architecture specialists. We are recognized for our excellence in the design and delivery of innovative, progressive and high quality public and private landscape spaces. ASPECT has developed a broad portfolio of public realm projects for urban settings such as streets and plazas which demonstrate our capability to deliver projects such as Appian Way. This page depicts a selection of completed ASPECT public realm projects in Sydney and Melbourne. Steam Mill Lane is a new, pedestrianized, ‘eat-street’ laneway located near Chinatown in the southern Sydney CBD. It is the first of two laneways, and a larger series of public spaces that, together, will comprise Darling Square; a significant urban regeneration project on the site of the former Sydney Entertainment Centre and car park.
1
George Street is part of the Sydney South East Light Rail project. This first phase between King Street and Park Street have been completely redesigned converting two city blocks into a pedestrian oriented environment. The Goods Line brings the vision of a more connected, sustainable and innovative Sydney one step closer to reality. It provides a connection through to the Devonshire Tunnel under Central Station and Chinatown and Darling Harbour, and taps into various cultural, educational, and media institutions along the way.
4
Prahran Square is a leading example of a new form of urban square. What was once street-level carpark is transformed into a multi-functional parkland integrating a multilevel underground carpark and restructuring the surrounding streetscapes into a pedestrian friendly environment. Windsor is the creation of new public space in a highly contested urban realm of inner Melbourne. The thinking behind this project goes back nearly 8 years when it was first identified as an opportunity to reduce the road space and increase pedestrian in the Chapel Street master plan.
2
Our team is currently engaged on the UWS BCC Campus to deliver the surrounding public realm which allows us to now use this knowledge and understanding of the site to assist in delivery of Appian Way.

ARRIVAL
The revitalisation and upgrade of Appian Way and surrounds present a significant and catalytic opportunity to transform an existing street and car park into an accessible and green corridor. The corridor currently sits between the soon to be upgraded Bankstown Metro Station and the proposed Western Sydney University (UWS) Bankstown Campus. The opportunity to design and deliver the northern section of Appian Way coincides with the development and construction of the UWS site. The proposed public domain extent and upgrade surrounding the UWS site was somewhat constrained and it was evident that to achieve the best outcome, the upgrade should consider the wider site. The developer for the UWS site, Walker Corporation and local government Canterbury Bankstown City Council (CBCC) have engaged us, ASPECT Studios to collaborate and to continue our work on the UWS campus upgrade, as well as extending our scope of work to include the wider public realm scope. The reference design proposal for Appian Way responds to main documents that have recently been authored by CBCC including: •
Complete Streets 2019 (Endorsed)
•
Paul Keating Park (PKP) Master Plan August 2020 (Draft)
ARRIVAL
A Pedestrian Place
These strategic reports set out a series of considerations, recommendations and actions for the site and seek to prioritise this work as it leverages strong links to public transport, as well as ongoing growth and development in the area. This proposal aims to build a high quality green shared street where safety and humanscaled approaches are also considered. It is the first phase in creating a strong linear gesture within the heart of Bankstown CBD, providing a strong focus on pedestrian and cycle movement, creating fun and safe places for rest and gather, and reducing urban heat . The proposal unlocks the sites potential creating premier community destination and environment where “people want to be” rather than simply passing through. The structure of the proposed design strategy involves the formation and consolidation of a series of disparate open spaces into a unified shared street and park interface, each activated through the inclusion of social infrastructure, heritage interpretation, and passive recreational facilities. The initial reference design seeks to build upon the work completed within the Complete Streets and PKP Masterplan. This proposal is guided by the following principles and objectives;
A Green and Blue Spine
CIVIC EVENT
CIVIC SQUARE
PARK EVENT
1. A Pedestrian Place - Put people first by seeking to resolve current vehicular access to ensure pedestrians and cyclists are always prioritised to ensure a safe and welcoming environment. 2. A Green and Blue spine - Create an exemplar shared street which prioritises green and blue infrastructure, as well as reflecting the history of place and the culture of the people of Bankstown. 3. A Central Civic Square - The development around Appian Way is set to change in the future with growing residential demands. Through a generous civic square which connects to open spaces, educational institutions, and work places, the space will become a focus for civic and everyday life as Bankstown grows. 4. Events Big and Small - Consider and plan for the future growth and needs of Bankstown and ensure Appian Way offers a diverse range of activities and places for both day and night.

The southern portion of The Appian Way currently operates as a pedestrian only zone. The reference design, in alignment with the Complete Streets Action Plan and Paul Keating Park Masterplan proposes to limit or exclude vehicular access from Rickard Road to improve amenity and safety for the public realm. Given the pedestrian priority approach, all streets within the scope will either be only for pedestrians or shared between pedestrians and cyclists unless stated otherwise. 68 DP 2 DP543767 58 In summary: 75 78 • Primary pedestrian access paths are a minimum of 3000mm wide to a maximum

The potential closure of The Appian Way to general traffic has many positive outcomes for the public realm. However, existing and future access requirements need to be considered within the design to ensure the site remains accessible in emergency and operational for maintenance and large public events. The reference design does not currently resolve all access requirements but proposes three potential options of vehicular access. These three options are:

The Paul Keating Park Master Plan (PKPMP) suggested a series of rain gardens to the left hand side of The Appian Way, where the current play area exists. The levels of this area sit predominately above The Appian Way, meaning rain gardens within this area would need to be lowered and additional drainage infrastructure would be required if The Appian Way is to drain into this area. The scope shown in this reference design has not considered this area. However, a series of raingardens are proposed along the blue green spine of The Appian Way to allow for future flexibility of this area.

The constraints of the existing and proposed culvert locations present a challenge to the establishment of large shade trees on the eastern side of the site. Trees have therefore been strategically aligned to the centre of Appian Way in order to create continous soil volume and tree line. Within this zone, we propose to excavate down to 1000mm depth to provide necessary soil volume and deep soil to support tree growth. Where garden beds are proposed, there will be a free draining soil and where pavements are indicated, strata vaults will be used to support the pavement and allow for a continuous soil volume.

An advantage of7dedicating a consolidated zone ( approx 930m ) for trees down 2 DP54376 75 the centre Appian Way is that it allows for a more efficient use of soil, as the volume 78 can be shared between the trees. This minimises the amount of deep soil needed / for trees proposed down the centre of Appian Way and ensures that maintenance / activities are consolidated. The volume of soil a tree requires varies greatly and many characteristics determine it minimum needs. 55152 ASPECTSP Studios recommends the use of the Soil Volume calculator by soil scientist Elke Hage to determine optimal growing conditions for urban trees. The SVS allows tree planting scenarios to influence recommended soil volume through 5 selections. Influencing factors on tree volume include: 2

Civic Drive will be a primary service vehicle route and is located over a reinforced concrete slab As such, vegetation which creates a buffer between pedestrian activities and vehicle movements should be prioritised through raised planters given the nature of Civic Drive being built on slab. At this time, we don’t have sufficient structural information to determine if trees are suitable. Therefore, we have excluded this option from the reference design in the interim.

The tree and planting palette is to be considered a reference only. The design has currently focused on ensuring adequate species variation, mature size, quantity and suitable pot size is addressed at this time. Further tree and plant selection will occur during concept development. Large natives are placed at the north-eastern corner of Paul Keating park to mark and provide shade for the Appian Way and Civic Drive intersection, which forms the central plaza of the site. Transitioning from this point, a series of medium and small sized trees are curated along movement corridors and over gathering spaces, providing shade and serving as a buffer between pedestrian 68 and vehicular movements. The reference design currently proposes: DP 2 DP543767 58 75 71. 8 Three categories of trees : large, medium, and small. The palette features / varying sized trees through out and uses large ornamental natives and smaller exotic deciduous species where suitable. /

3. Planting, which will be predominately native needs to be robust and layered in a public domain environment. As such we have proposed a minimum rate of planting to be 9 plants per m2 to allow for a layering of groundcovers, grasses and accent shrubs throughout the green and blue spine.
