EXECUTIVE COORDINATOR
Our Unity Through Cooperation
The story is sometimes told of the meeting that took place in Atlanta in 1991 where CBF was constituted and named. It was originally proposed that the name for this new Baptist body be “United Baptist Fellowship.” In the debate that followed, an alternate name was suggested, along with this explanation (paraphrased), “Baptists have never been united about anything, but we have been cooperative. Let’s instead call it ‘Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.’”
It is true that from the very beginning of the Baptist movement in the early 16th century, diversity of thought and practice has been our hallmark. But we have experienced unity. Our unity is not based on conformity, but on three other factors. These factors include the Lordship of Jesus Christ, Baptist principles and cooperation in mission and ministry. This triad is beautifully captured in CBFNC’s identity statement:
We are a fellowship of Baptists in North Carolina sharing a commitment to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, sensitivity to the Holy Spirit in our midst, and a reverence for God’s Word. Our oneness is expressed through a devotion to historic Baptist principles of faith and practice. This devotion calls us to join together in responding to Jesus’ call to go into all the world to share God’s love - Matthew 28:19-20.
Based on Psalm 133:1, this year’s theme seeks to capture the idea that as God’s children, siblings in faith, we can live together in common cause to do God’s work. With Christ as our center, and respect for our differences according to Baptist principles, we can accomplish far more together than we can alone.
This report describes the results of cooperative unity in our life together over the last fiscal year, from April 2022 to March 2023. Here are a few highlights of a fruitful year together:
Ministerial Transitions – In June 2022, Andy Hale joined the CBFNC staff as Associate Executive Coordinator. Immediately he went to work to revamp one of CBFNC’s oldest services, ministerial transitions, where we assist churches to call new ministers to their staff. His excellent work has resulted in new processes and resources to serve churches and ministers.
Helping Pastors Thrive – A centerpiece of this Lilly Endowment funded program, directed by Scott Hudgins, involves retreats for ministers at all stages of their vocational journey. The pandemic forced most of these retreats to be converted to online experiences, but this year they returned to a large offering of in-person events, which were enthusiastically welcomed by participants.
Staff Visits to Churches – A hallmark of our staff throughout our history, this year saw a return to a full schedule of staff visits in churches to preach, teach, consult and provide many kinds of leadership and support.
30th Anniversary – CBFNC will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2024. A special committee has been working for over a year to plan various ways to observe this milestone.
Annual Gathering – Many North Carolina Cooperative Baptists look forward to the Annual Gathering every year as a time to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. The Annual Gathering was disrupted for three years due to the pandemic. The 2023 Annual Gathering saw a return to pre-pandemic participation and new energy infused every aspect of our time together.
Housing and Hospitality Summit – Though technically not part of the period covered by this report, we hosted the first-ever Housing and Hospitality Summit of the Welcome Network. This ministry now engages over 60 churches in NC and beyond. More information will come later about this transformative event and the ministry it supports.
We are grateful to the churches and individual donors whose financial support made these ministries possible. Overall, generosity from individuals increased during this fiscal year, while there was a decline in giving from churches, in some cases due to enhanced local ministries. We pray that church support for CBFNC will rebound in the coming year, without any loss of local missional engagement.
North Carolina Cooperative Baptists are a diverse bunch. We hold differing perspectives on some challenging issues facing our society. But we agree on the most important issues – Jesus Christ, Baptist principles and the call to cooperative missions. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a firm foundation on which to base a fellowship.

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT
Support for churches and pastors in transition.
Helping clergy and churches through all types of ministerial transitions is an essential part of how CBFNC equips ministers and churches. Over the last year, we have been refining our transitions process by creating new systems to accommodate the unique challenges among clergy looking for new opportunities, churches looking for candidates to call and how CBFNC relates to both groups. One new offering for churches was a series of Minister Search Process Conversations: bimonthly online meetings for representatives from search teams across our state. Each conversation focused on a specific topic related to minister searches and the recordings are now available as digital resources on the CBFNC website.
Several members from Zebulon Baptist Church’s search team participated in the Minister Search Process Conversations and found them to be very helpful, in addition to the guidance and connecting the church with potential candidates.

We prayed for help and God put people in our path to help us. CBFNC has been there to answer our questions and they provided us with phenomenal guidance. It’s wonderful to know they are there to help churches in situations like ours.

Romania Mission Team provides relief to Ukrainian war refugees.
When Russia attacked Ukraine in February 2022, Project Ruth (a Romanian Baptist ministry and CBF Legacy Partner) pivoted to provide relief to Ukrainian war refugees. Emergency aid was provided in the form of 4:7 care boxes and winter kits. As people across CBFNC learned of these relief projects, many expressed interest in doing “something more” to help because our fellowship has had a long-standing commitment to missions in Ukraine. That “something more” turned into the CBFNC Romania Mission Immersion Team: an eight-member team that spent 10 days in Bucharest packing food care boxes and delivering winter kits to Ukrainians. While in Romania, the team was able to pack 1,605 care boxes, with each box providing food for a family of four for seven days. They also packed and delivered winter kits (which were funded by CBF Global) to Ukrainian church leaders at a border town for distribution to families still in their community to help keep them warm during the winter.

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT
Baptist campus ministry in North Carolina.
CBFNC continues to be the sole Baptist denomination entity engaging in campus ministry throughout our state. The Cooperative Baptist Student Fellowship (CBSF) consists of over 20 campus groups that meet regularly;
CBFNC funded campus ministers and interns; an annual Mid-Winter Retreat; and a spring break mission trip. For the last two years during spring break, students from across North Carolina have had the opportunity to serve God by serving neighbors in the North Charleston, SC area. Students worked in an affordable housing neighborhood in partnership with Metanoia, a ministry of CBF South Carolina. Students say that these mission trips are the highlight of their academic year and it gives them the chance to build Christian community with other college students from across the state.

Students are the future of the church. Not in 10 years when they are looking for a home-church with a family and children, but right now as they are learning how to lead and what their place is within the 'big C' church.

We give thanks to God for the generous and faithful churches and individuals who support CBFNC financially. Together, we are bringing God’s mission to our state and world, on earth as it is in heaven.
Your financial support is vital. CBFNC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and does not receive operational support from any denominational group, including CBF Global. As a result, CBFNC is dependent on your financial support. Contributions from churches and individuals ensure our long-term sustainability to support churches, their leaders and their communities.
As church giving continues to decline, CBFNC is becoming more reliant on contributions from individuals and other revenue sources. We encourage individuals to give to your church first, then consider making a contribution to CBFNC, on a recurring basis and/or in your will/estate plan. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference. Your gift will help secure the future of this thriving Christian community of individuals, churches and partners that promotes Christ-centered ministry built on the firm foundation of cherished historic Baptist principles.
